Re: Magic Trackpad
Now hear we have the option of switching the Trackpad instead of the Magic mouse for the same cost. I might do that and if my wife would rather a mouse I will just buy one for her. Mostly she will use my Win XP till I can afford to get her a a Mac. Thanks all for the info. Max. Original Message Subject: Re: Magic Trackpad From: Neil Barnfather - TalkNav To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Date: Mon, 30 May 2011 07:40:45 +0100 Max, just chipping in my own two pence worth here. I have now since making the switch, or as I prefer to say, Mac-ing the switch, get it! :) bought an iMac, MacBook Air and an MacBook Pro. the first thing to say about your observation is, unless things are done differently where you are, Apple will sell you an iMac, this is their all in one desktop solution, with a wireless keyboard and a Magic Mouse, you cannot dump the mouse. You then though can choose to add the Magic Track Pad to that order, but you cannot per say trade it for the Magic Mouse. So what I'm saying here is if you ask Apple for the Magic Track Pad, you're going to have both the Magic Track Pad and Magic Mouse. This is not a bad thing, my sighted wife uses our iMac as do our little ones, and sometimes I spot them using the TP and other times the Mouse, the nice thing about the TP is that it is a large surface track pad, far bigger than on the portables and as such, is comfortable for use on a lap etc. The iMac can happily handle having all three input devices connected at the same time so there's no worries there. On a more Voice Over note, its like a lot of people have already said to you, on my three Machines I primarily use the keyboard, this is ergonomics, moving a knuckle up and down is less strain then your wrist to swipe all over the shop. So you get less ache and discomfort from the keyboard for prolonged use periods. However, the TP does make exploring web-sites more intuitive or simple to get your head round layouts etc, and it can be nice to rest your knuckles every so often. without any doubt though, I am far quicker using my keyboard over my TP on an overall bases. I would say that if you're investing in a Mac, an additional $99 is hardly worth worrying about given the overall comparative expense, go ahead, put one of those things in your cart, they are of use after all. One final note, if you're used to the iPHone, iPod Touch or iPad, then the TP also makes additional sense, especially if you're converting from a PC, as you can migrate your existing understanding of controls immediately to your Mac experience. hope that this helps. Voice Over and Pages
Hi all. I hope everyone is enjoying this lovely long weekend we are having. I have a question regarding Voice Over and documents in Pages. I don't know where i am supposed to edit or type text in pages. I open pages, select a template (usi want to use the blank template.) After choosing a template, i am entered in to the document. I can navigate around the screen and i find buttons for formatting and adding attributes like underlining and bold but nowhere to type. I find a "layout area" and i interact with it but can't enter text. What's going on? :( If VO isn't accessible with Pages (although i hope it is) do let me know what word processing program i can use and where to find it. Re: Voice Over and Pages
Hi Sonnia, THe layout area contains a group for each page of your document, which in the case of your blank template will be just one. Interact with that group and you should, in turn, find areas for a header, footer and body. These are where you do your actual editing. Best, and hope this helps, Zack. RE: Questions from a Potential New Mac User
Hello everyone. I use Duxbury on my Mac Mini. Duxbury is not supported on the Mac platform so I use it with Windows 7 running on the Mac in VMFusion. VMFusion allows me to set up Virtual Machines so that I can run different operating systems side by side. Right now, I'm answering you on my Mac Mini using Microsoft Outlook and Windows 7. Snow Leopard is running as well. I do all of my editing and translation on my Mac Mini using Microsoft Word and Duxbury. I then save my .dxb file to dropbox and when I'm at church where our embosser is located I launch Duxbury and open the .dxb file from drop box. It works very well. I assume that if I needed it I could get a usb to parallel converter so that I could connect a Versapoint Duo to the mini but I haven't needed to do this yet. Has anyone tried it? I have been using PC for over 25 years, and have no experience with Mac computers whatsoever. I am totally blind, and hope that some of you will be willing to help me decide whether to make the change. I use JAWS for Windows version 12.01, Kurzweil 1000 version 12.4 for text to speech scanning, and Duxbury Braille Translator Version 10.4 for braille embossing. First, does any one know if Kurzweil and Duxbury work with Macs? I know JAWS won't. Second, Does Voice Over work well with the following languages: Japanese, Spanish and German? Can you switch between languages easily? For example, I am trying to learn Japanese, but still need English, can Voice Over handle both of these languages at the same time, and can one input in a word processing document and have both languages read? Third, Does Mac work with the following hardware products?: Epson 1660 flat-bed scanner, HP Laserjet 1020 Printer, Sony DVD/CD disc Recorder, I forget which model I have. I'd rather not have to purchase more peripherals if I don't have to. Many thanks in advance. Re: itunes and cds
Hi, I'm not really sure what you want to do here. So you've ripped the CD's to iTunes so now there in the iTunes music library with all your other music. If you want to just search for an album, just type in the album title into the search field and only songs under that album will appear in the songs table. Note: you might get some other songs in the results. Especially if you have more than 1 album with the same title or, a song name shares the same name as an album title. hth Ricardo Walker rwalker...@gmail.com Twitter, Skype, and AIM: rwalker296 www.mobileaccess.org On May 30, 2011, at 6:49 AM, Denise Avant wrote: > hello all, > i recently ripped five complete CDs with iTunes. i see the individual songs > in my music list. but how are they suppose to come out as albums which is > what i wanted. i do not want to have to build a playlist for one of michael > jackson's albums. > thanks. > > -- > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups > "MacVisionaries" group. > To post to this group, send email to macvisionaries@googlegroups.com. > To unsubscribe from this group, send email to > macvisionaries+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. > For more options, visit this group at > http://groups.google.com/group/macvisionaries?hl=en. > -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Document navigation issues in pages and text edit
Hello Max, To be able to use the VO commands in TextEdit or Pages, you have to interact with the text input area. Once you do that, the Read commands work fine. You can find all the VO commands by pressing VO-H-H. Take some time to go through them and you'll be surprised at what you find. There are commands to read by character, word, line, sentence, and paragraph, as well as from the beginning or from current position. On your MacBook, Page Up is FN-Up Arrow, Page Down is FN-Down Arrow. Home is FN-Left Arrow and End is FN-Right Arrow. If the key combination for any command seems too complicated, you can always define a more convenient keystroke in Keyboard Commander or define a trackpad gesture if you prefer. Re: Adding titles in iMovie
Hi Ash, This is really helpful. Thanks a lot! One more question: when you paste your title on the timeline, does it appear where the playhead is located or at the very beginning of the timeline? Looking at it with Voiceover , it appears that all the titles are stashed at the start and then have to be moved to their appropriate spots. If this is the latter, then I cannot figure out how to move the titles on the timeline. The included help page only refers to dragging blue bar or whatever. Any help would be much appreciated. Re: VizWiz
Thanks Ed for bringing this to our attention. Is the app itself slow, or just the answers to your queries. The latter would be expected since it's bound to always involve human intervention (presumably from a volunteer staff). How long does it take on average to get an answer, or does that depend on the question? And the first person who posts: "what does this do" is getting banned . Well I'm half serious; I fully expect at least two posts from people who would rather take up everyone's time than spend a few seconds Googling or perusing the App store. For that reason it might be a good idea to anticipate this and include a description when referencing an app here. Okay, to practice what I preach, here goes: App: VizWiz Category: medical Seller: Jeffrey Bigham Price in US currency: free of charge URL: US app store is http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/vizwiz/id439686043?mt=8 Description: VizWiz lets blind users recruit remote sighted workers to help them with visual problems in nearly real-time. Users take a picture with their phone, speak a question, and then receive multiple spoken answers. Re: daisy books on the mac
Hi Iain, at first: Great that you developed a daisy player for the Mac. That makes the Mac even more interesting. In my opinion it's not absolutely necessary that it remains free. More important is that it's a little bit easier and more reliable in its functions. For me it is always a bit difficult to navigate backwards. As far as I remember it is necessary to press buttons to navigate. But to have just short cuts would be more afficiant. I tested it a few months ago. I'm not sure wether I remember correctly. I'm also willing to pay for a new version of Olearea. Aspecially when it was possible to edit daisy books or even to record with it. We might need an equivalent of the PRS for the Mac. I suspect Denise was already aware of this prior to posting. The problem is that I have yet to determine how to play an album in it's intended order. Re: itunes and cds
hi all, thanks. this does help some. what i was expecting was for itunes to create a playlist with all of the tracks from the cd in it, - the way other music players create a folder. when i arrowed up and down the column where the playlist i had created were in the list with music, podcasts genius etc were located, i did not see this. what i have noticed is that when i did browse the album list, there seemed to be lists of album names that really were not part of the five cds. it is just taking me some rethinking to get accustomed to how itunes classifies music. but your contributions are helpful. Re: text editor for coding, and a good anti malware app?
Hello Matthew, No problem at all. I was considering this app, but I was also considering the Virus Barrier X 6 application as well. I downloaded and ran Virus Barrier X6 as a trial and in many ways I was rather unhappy with it. The only thing that bothers me about Virus Barrier Plus is that it doesn't automatically find the mall ware, you have to do a scan to find it. In other words, it doesn't find it in real-time. However, I may still get Virus Barrier Plus, haven't decided either way at this point. Dan On May 30, 2011, at 3:09 PM, Matthew Campbell wrote: > Hi. > Actually I stated that wrongly. Hi Geoff, In iTunes press command j to bring up the view options window to choose what columns you wish to add or subtract from the music table. In here, check the track number checkbox. Now after you've found the album, interact with the music table and VO over to your track number column and press VO shift backslash to have the music table sorted by that column. hth Ricardo Walker rwalker...@gmail.com Twitter, Skype, and AIM: rwalker296 www.mobileaccess.org On May 30, 2011, at 4:51 PM, Geoff Waaler wrote: > I suspect Denise was already aware of this prior to posting. Details on URL and web pages for VizWiz [was Re: VizWiz]
Hi Joseph, VizWiz is already in the UK Stores, as well. I haven't tried to search exhaustively, since I'd have to go through the process of resetting my iTunes store location to every country in order to check. You should just try the link for the U.S. iTunes store. This is a free app: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/vizwiz/id439686043?mt=8 Here's the web site: http://vizwiz.org/ There's a specific link from that home page to a Vizwiz tutorial: http://vizwiz.org/tutorial.html The tutorial is helpful to read through first, since the app just opens with the camera. There's also a web site for the research project at the University of Rochester, if you want to read up more about this (in a scholarly research sense) http://hci.cs.rochester.edu/currentprojects.php?proj=vw The more readable informal New Scientist article about this project appeared a couple of weeks ago: http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/onepercent/2011/05/smartphone-app-lets-the-blind.html HTH. Album order playlists for tracks ripped in iTunes [was Re: itunes and cds]
Hi Geoff, Ricardo, Denise, and Others, I've never had trouble playing tracks that were ripped with iTunes or purchased from the iTunes Store in album order. You don't need to check track number in the View Options menu in order to sort tracks by number, although it doesn't hurt. Just move to the "Album" column and apply your sort. If you want to create a playlist for an album that is in your iTunes music library, with your Music library selected in the sources table, toggle on the browser (Command-b) as Ricardo and Barry suggested. Navigate (VO-Right Arrow or flick right with TrackPad Commander gestures) to the browser and interact, then navigate to the "Albums" column and find your Album by typing the first few letters of the name, or using your arrow keys or by running your finger down to the entry if you're using trackpad gestures. With the album selected, you can use the Command-Shift-N shortcut to create a new playlist from your selection, and type in the name. Your source list selection will change to that playlist. Navigate to the songs table (e.g., VO-Command-T, or with with VO-Right arrow or right flicks) and interact. Navigate to the "Album" column and sort with VO-Shift-Backslash. When you sort on any column in a library or playlist, iTunes remembers that ordering. So in this instance I've had you do the sort from within the created playlist. The order of tracks in your music library will be unaffected by this. Very occasionally, when you sync a playlist that you have reordered to your iPhone or iPod, the new sort order will not be used if there was a previous sync with the playlist contents listed in a different order. You can ensure that the current order is used by navigating to the playlist in the sources table, bringing up the context menu (VO-m), and choosing "Copy To Play Order". Remember that turning on/off the column browser (Command-b) and sorting (VO-Shift-Backslash on an English language input keyboard) are toggle actions. In the case of a sort, applying the shortcut a second time will reverse the current sort order. I'll further note that if you have ripped multi-volume audiobooks from CD, provided that the Album titles are consistent, sorting on the album column will order the entire book correctly by tracks within a disc, and by discs within the book. Note that if you want this to work, you should probably check the Album title and Artist that are being used and override them yourself, since the CD database that iTunes uses will likely name the album "Book Title [Disc 1]", "Book Title [Disc 2]", etc. instead of just "Book Title". If you want to check for how iTunes "knows" the track number of a CD it has ripped, select one of the tracks in your album and use the Command-Shift-R shortcut to reveal the location of that track in Finder. You'll find that in the Finder window the name of the track appears as "01 Song name 1", "02 Song name 2", etc. If you check a multi-volume audio book, the names will look like "1-01 Track name 1", "1-02 Track name 2", and so forth, until you reach the items for the second disc, which will be named "2-01 Track name 1", "2-02 Track name 2", and so forth. HTH. Re: Magic Trackpad
Hi. I, too, hardly ever use my trackpad. I find it too hard to use. Although I've pretty much mastered the touch screen on my 6th gen Nano but the Mac is a different story. The keyboard is easier.
