Re: introduction

2011-04-01 Thread Charlie Bates
hello Sarah

Congratulations! what fantastic presents you received for your
birthday! i wish I had a lovely family like yours!

Welcome to the world of mac - you will never look back! It really is a
more user friendly platform.

I am learning voiceover too. I have low vision and have previously
just used the zooming feature within OSX but now feel like i want to
use voiceover full time to avoid straining my eyes and harming my body
with bad posture. It's quite difficult for me as even when i was on
windows I was just using magnification software (zoomtext) so i don't
have a screenreader background.

The people on this list are really great. Dont be afraid to ask
questions.

Oh wow, these games look excellent! Thank you very much for sharing. One
question, and I do intend to read through some of the README's as I get time,
but is there any way to play against the computer rather than other people? I
would love to get some good practice in before throwing myself to the wolves.

RE: Getting used to the screen on a Macbook pro

2011-04-01 Thread Kimberly
Interestingly, I tried with the Mac when I got home and could play the
podcast with no problem, but I can't figure out how to download them which I
figured was just my inexperience with the Mac. The one I listened to was
very informative, but I think it would be even better if I could play it on
my vr stream while I follow along doing things on the Mac.

2011-04-01 Thread Zachary Kline
While we're on the subject of accessible games, don't forget the ZOom
interactive fiction interpreter. That's self-voicing as well, and I've yet to
find a better program for playing the old text adventures. It can handle
almost all popular formats, and is great with Alex reading the text. It can be
found at its homepage, www.logicalshift.co.uk/unix/zoom
Enjoy,
Zack.

Hi,

When on the link to the podcast you can just press option return or, interact
with the link and bring up the context menu with VO shift M. I believe there

Hi Sarah:
Dang, girl! You so made out for your Birthday! Nice going! First of all, go to
www.blindcooltech.com. Listen to all podcasts done by Mike Arrigo. They will
help you out. You will love 1-to1 training. April 13th will by my year

that's normal. I have a Macbook Pro, iPhone, iPod Nano, and Apple TV. I'm quite
happy with my Apple products. I use an apex, not a Braillesense, so can't help.

Hello Sarah:
And if like me you're not a huge fan of podcasts, The Apple site offers some
good information on making the switch. Just search on Apple's support for
mac101. It isn't made specifically for learning with Voieover, but will give
you a good beginning understanding of the switch from Windows.

Hi Sarah,

I chuckled loudly when I read the first line of your message. Yes, I did
make out really well for my birthday. *grin* My friend was envious and
jealous of me because my Mac is newer than his. Oh well. He can get over
it and has.

Anyhow, I will take your advice and download the podcasts from Blind Cool
tech. I knew I would have somewhat of a learning curve with the Mac. So I
am dealing with the frustrations as best as I can. I look forward to the
classes and the over the phone training.

Thanks for the warm welcome Sarah along with others from the list.

reading epub-files on the mac with itext express

2011-04-01 Thread William Windels
Hello all,
I was looking for a program on me mac to read epub-files.
I found the (I think/hope
) free app: itext express.
With this app, I am able to open the epub-files so , that's fine.
The epub-file that I was opening with text express, has some bookmarks in it.
This bookmarks where made with ibooks on my iphone.

There seems to be a menu-item in text express to show a bookmarkslist.
I don't know if this are the real bookmarks and also, I see no way to jump toe
the text in the file on the place of the bookmark.

So, a summary:
Ik would like to read epub-files on my mac and jump to the bookmarks that I
have made with ibooks on my iphone.

If there is a better (free) program to do that, just let me know.

Thanx alot for your answers,

best regards,
William

RE: introduction

2011-04-01 Thread Sarah May

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for the warm welcome. I am very lucky to have a family that is able
to afford buying me a Mac right now. I am a very lucky person indeed!

I understand what it is like to go from being able to read the screen to
using just a screen reader. It was many, many, years ago, but before the RP
took most of my vision when I was twelve, I used magnification software as
well. Back then I had an Apple II E and was using Magic Slate. How have
the times changed from then. LOL Still, I remember how it was such an
adjustment for me to go from trying to read what was on the screen to using
what I thought was the horrible mechanical voice reading what was on the
screen to me. At first I used an Apple screen reading program called BEX.
Then I learned how to use
The early versions of Jaws with dos programs for Word Perfect. After that
the rest is history. I never really got a choice if I wanted to learn Jaws
or another company's screen reading program for Windows PC computers. I was
stuck with Jaws and that's all I had to go by.

Anyhow, I know it may take you some time to get use to using just the screen
reading program, and only listening to what's on the screen instead of
looking at it, but your eyes will so appreciate you not abusing them. I no
longer have the ability to read any size print. I haven't since I was
fourteen years old. So I had to make the transition to learning how to use
the screen reading software and Braille for my ways to read pretty fast.

Yes, everyone on the list seems so friendly and helpful. If I have any
questions I will ask. I'm not afraid to ask questions. It also helps me
that I have a friend who has a Macbook who uses voice over. He said if I
needed his help to call him any time.

Well again, thanks for the welcome Charlie.

Congratulations! what fantastic presents you received for your birthday! i
wish I had a lovely family like yours!

Welcome to the world of mac - you will never look back! It really is a more
user friendly platform.

I am learning voiceover too. I have low vision and have previously just used
the zooming feature within OSX but now feel like i want to use voiceover
full time to avoid straining my eyes and harming my body with bad posture.
It's quite difficult for me as even when i was on windows I was just using
magnification software (zoomtext) so i don't have a screenreader background.

The people on this list are really great. Dont be afraid to ask questions.

Hello Sarah,

First of all, your BrailleSense will work beautifully with your MacBook,
either via USB or BlueTooth. I tested one last summer and would have been
happy to keep it but it was needed by someone else.

When you get more familiar with your Mac, you'll be able to configure
VoiceOver commands on your BrailleSense to operate your Mac should you wish
to.

Now for a couple of useful tips. Control-Option-K turns on Keyboard Help
where you can press any key and hear what it is, or press any VoiceOver
command and hear what it does. You leave Keyboard Help by pressing the
Escape key at the top left corner of your keyboard.

Control-Option-H-H (hold down Control- and Option and press the letter H
twice) gives you all the VoiceOver commands sorted into menus. Press Return
to select a command, or Escape to leave the menus.

Cheers,

Anne

2011-04-01 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Wow!!! I have fond memories of the Apple II E and the Echo II speech
synthesizer. Back in those days, just about all we had were the 5.25 floppy
drives and a program called "Work Station". That was a group of five small
programs encoding a word processor which could deal with a grand total of five
pages. Yep, just five pages. Wow!

Of course, then came "Word Talk TM. That was on two 5.25 floppies. Then,
"Braille Edit Express". Remember those? Kind of wish they still made Braille
Edit Express for the Mac. Now that was one very utilitarian program if I say
so myself.

RE: introduction

2011-04-01 Thread Sarah May

Hi Ray,

I think BEX was the Braille Edit or Express program you are talking about.
I hated the speech for the Apple II Es. They sounded so harsh and
mechaniacal. For someone who was just starting to use a screen reader at
the time, it was hard for me to adjust because I hated the sound quality of
the speech. No we have these wonderful programs like voice over and the
sappy speech voices to choose from with Jaws. The screen reading and speech
technology has sure evolved for the better since the 1980s. I do miss
though playing Wagons's West. That was a computer game for the Magic Slate
program for the Apple II E. You were like the travelers going west on a
wagon train. It was a lot of fun!

Wow!!! I have fond memories of the Apple II E and the Echo II speech
synthesizer. Back in those days, just about all we had were the 5.25 floppy
drives and a program called "Work Station". That was a group of five small
programs encoding a word processor which could deal with a grand total of
five pages. Yep, just five pages. Wow!

Of course, then came "Word Talk TM. That was on two 5.25 floppies. Then,
"Braille Edit Express". Remember those? Kind of wish they still made
Braille Edit Express for the Mac. Now that was one very utilitarian program
if I say so myself.

The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!!

Well again, thanks for the welcome Charlie.

hello Sarah

Congratulations! what fantastic presents you received for your birthday! i
wish I had a lovely family like yours!

Welcome to the world of mac - you will never look back! It really is a more
user friendly platform.

I am learning voiceover too. I have low vision and have previously just used
the zooming feature within OSX but now feel like i want to use voiceover
full time to avoid straining my eyes and harming my body with bad posture.
It's quite difficult for me as even when i was on windows I was just using
magnification software (zoomtext) so i don't have a screenreader background.

The people on this list are really great. Dont be afraid to ask questions.

also voiceover does have some pretty good help available and of course as

Hi Michael,
I saw your post and thought your dmg file would be a wonderful edition to my

help with vm

2011-04-01 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Hi,

Ok, I wasn't sure where to ask this, so I'm asking here. If it's off topic,
people can answer me off list, please!

I got vm fusion all loaded onto my mac without a hitch, but now am having
problems putting stuff, like a screen reader, and k 1000, into the vm. I've
already listened to Mike O's podcast on vm's, which was helpful, but it didn't
go into loading stuff onto the vm.

any help would be great.

Alternatively, can somebody suggest good scanning software for the mac? It
doesn't have to be the exact equal of k1000, 'cause I know that's impossible,
but good recognition, etc, is a must.

Thanks,
Caitlyn

Re: Accessible Games For The Mac

2011-04-01 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi Shawn,
Interactive fiction is a game style that was popular in the 1980's and to a
lesser extent later on. Basically, you are given a bunch of text describing a
situation and have to react to it by typing commands. If you've ever played
muds or games of that type, this should be pretty familiar. Another term that
is sometimes used is text adventures, though that's a bit old-fashioned in some
circles.
Most interactive fiction is written in a specialty programming language, of
which there are several, and compiled to a special cross-platform format. Zoom
lets you play games compiled for the most popular of these. If you're
interested in the subject, I recommend Googling: interactive fiction will come
up with several sites which can do a better job of explaining things than I
have here.
Hope this helps,
Zack.

If they now call it logic band, i have this feeling some of the UI style, and
probably accessibility also takes from garage band. Just speculating, but
sounds like it, doesn't it? Don't it? Donnit

I type there the menu-option "Archive"but there is also some parameter with the
selected object between ''.

It seems normal that I should give also that parameter in the keyboard settings
of the system preferences but I don't know how to do that since the value
between ''is always different.

Is there a alternative how I can manage this?

Thanx for your hints,

best regards,
William

Re: Accessible database?

2011-04-01 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Johchi,

You might want to give Bento a try. I can't personally speak to it's
accessibility or functionality, but others on this list have said it is
accessible. You can get a free 30 day trial to get a feel for it. If Bento
doesn't meet your functionality needs, I think the next step up is it's big
sibling FileMaker. They are both put out by the company named FileMaker, which
I think has some sort of connection with Apple.

Here's a link to the Bento page where you can get more info and download a
trial version. From that page you can also navigate to the higher-end FileMaker
offerings if desired.

Re: Text Writer

2011-04-01 Thread Esther

Hi Kevin,

You're perfectly correct about this: on the iPhone TextWriter does not have an
initial button for forward delete.  I tested the app on an iPad because I knew
Mary was trying out her keyboard with her new iPad, but I didn't load
TextWriter on an iPhone or iPod Touch at the time I posted my findings.  The
behavior is the same, but there are only nine buttons on the top row, and there
is no forward delete button  This also meand that the button placement over
letter keys will be different from my description for the iPad in portrait
mode.  The top row of buttons are also very slightly above the positions of the
iPhone's home button when you hold the device in landscape mode.

HTH.  Cheers,

Esther

Dear Esther,
Thanks so much for turning us all on to Textwriter. While your
explanation was very thorough, I did notice one weird thing. On my
keyboard, there is no forward delete key in either landscape or
portrait orientation. I have an iPhone, not an iPad. Is this the
reason?
Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Teresa,
Calibre actually can be used if you confine yourself to command line programs
in Terminal. It ships with several rather nice scripts, including
ebook-convert to do command line conversions. As far as GUI programs, I can
recommend Stanza. It will convert between most popular formats. I can't recall
the home page just at the moment, but GOogle is your friend.
Hope this helps,
Zack.

I may look into the scripts for Calibre, too.

Accessible Games For The Mac and Kind Words

2011-04-01 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi. I forgot to say that if anyone needs help with RS Games or if you just want
a practice partner, I'm always ready to help out. I may not be in the client
all the time, but when I am, I like playing with people. My ID on there is BBS.
If you have any questions you'd like to ask me, send them to me off list. And
finally, I have a Skype account so if I'm not online in the client, you can
reach me there. My Skype name if people want to add me is bbstheblindrapper.
I would like to close this message by saying one thing to the Mac newbies on
this list. I for one am glad that you took the plunge into something that may
not be in your comfort zone yet. But once you keep using this wonderful
computer like I have been, you'll find that this thing isn't so bad at all. Who
knew that I'd be a happy Mac user after the fact that I swore that I'd never
switch from Windows, but then again I never heard about Voice Over. I never
heard about it until Leopard came out and that's also when I heard rumors about
Alex and his special talent of taking breaths in between sentences. So after
listening to a friend's boastings and watching Youtube videos about it, I
decided that my next computer had to be a Mac and here we are today. Six months
ago today. God has the time flew. So even though it's quite the learning
process to use this thing, it's worth it!

Shawn
