Re: scanning and the mac

That seems quite odd, as I have a iMac and a 13 inch Macbook Pro, and VM Fusion
is fine on the Macbook. I also have the iPal Solo (stand alone version of the
iPal). I opted for this as I did not realise at the time they were working on

Re: Steve Jobs has only six weeks to live, according to the inquirerer

2011-02-18 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Well, there is only one thing that I can say, which is, whatever the case of
Steve Jobso's health, he has done a remarkable thing which is bringing
accessability in to the main stream so whatever happens, he will be remembered
because no other company thus far have done this and I'm not saying that to be
grateful but I know that no one can say that having accessability in mainstream
products is unthinkable. We all hope he will be OK but as the saying goes no
one lasts forever. Let's sincerely hope all is well with him and may his family
have many years of his company and presence.

VO will only say safari busy, safari ready on mobile facebook site?

2011-02-18 Thread johns.kary
Hi lister's,
For the last week or so every time I try to read comments, event invites or
practically anything other then the home page on m.facebook.com, vo just keeps
saying safari busy, safari ready. It just keeps looping around and around
till I move away from that page. The main page of m.facebook.com works with
no problem, but nothing beyond it. I haven't noticed any other webpages
doing this.

Is anyone else having this problem? if not any idea what I can do to fix it?

It's incredibly frustrating not being able to read FB comments.
Thanks for any thoughts,
Kari.

I hate to say this, but it wouldn't surprice me in the least if the first thing
that gets ditched is the accessibility. Maybe i fear this because here where i
live, in Sweden there's no such thing as accessibility laws, so people and
companys can in principle do what they want in terms of a11y and get away with
it. That's why i don't take a11y as a right, but a privilege that can be taken

Depending on what your drive is, you can possibly get a utility to do

Re: my Mac suddenly cannot see my time machine backup disk

2011-02-18 Thread Chris Norman
Sorry for my partial post, I managed to hit the send key LOL.

Yeah, I was saying... do a low level format. I believe Mac OS X does
it when you set security options to write 0's over it. Either that, or
I just checked, and OS X does have the dd utility built into it. You
can load up the terminal, and I believe (it used to work on Linux), a
command like the following should perform a complete reformat of the
drive:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/your_hard_drive

HTH, and I'm a little out of date iwth this stuff, so I could be
talking absolute rubbish, so sorry if that is the case! :-D

Nope. When I go to:

m.facebook.com

and read comments posted on other friends walls, (which is what I assume you
are doing) I can read everything. Am I correct in my guess?

PS. OT I guess, but, how does one make a link to one's facebook page so that
if the link is put in to an e-mail signature, the recipient can click on that
link and go to one's facebook page?

You can get a female Russian voice from infovox that works well with voiceover.

Re: scanning and the mac

2011-02-18 Thread Earle M. Harrison
Hi all,

I believe that the problem is not loosing sound in the VM, but on the Windows
side in a Boot Camp partition. I have set-up several 13 inch Macbook Pro and
invariably experienced the problem of loosing sound on the Windows side. Last
time, we were thrilled because we got sound to work, installed all the software
and then imported the Boot Camp image into a VM and this process when
flawlessly; however, the next time we booted to the Windows side of the dual
boot, sound was gone. Sighted assist found that nothing was muted and volume
was at 100 percent. Reinstalling drivers from the Apple OS CD did not resolve
the problem. On calling the support departments of both OS's, Microsoft
blamed Apple, Apple blamed Microsoft and the customer decided that working in a
VM was best anyway. Interestingly as David observed, plugging in a cheep USB
sound card works great on the Windows side of a dual boot system, but what a
drag to have to resort to this.

Cheers,

Earle

Re: Itunes beginner's questions.

Sorry, I seem to be doing this a lot today. Turned the mouse off now

With my set up, I can just copy entire albums or whatever to the
itunes folder. My full path is:

~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Automatically add to iTunes

Then iTunes moves it round, and everything's good.

See my suggestion for importing above - that'll chuck everything into
it's propper place, be it a 2 second MP3 loops, or 500 folders of M4A
files. Also, if it's an audio book, I've been using AudioBook Builder
(available from the app store now). It's about £6, and it's totally
accessible, not to mention brilliantly simple for making M4B's out of
straight MP3 / M4A files. I usually use it in conjuction with
Soundgrinder and / or Macs (not sure if they're available from the App
store or not), they convert between file types, then I can use Audio
book builder to create the final result, chapter markers, the works.

As for playing a particular folder, not as far as I know, but you'll
get used to not needing it (the same as me, as a Winamp user
originally); and interacting with the "Playlist browser" instead, and
finding the appropriate artist / album.

>
> 3. Is it possible to add songs to an already created playlist?

Yes. I tend to go by album, but by song will be the same result. Find
and select whatever you want, so if it's a collection of songs, you
can use the shift and arrow keys in the songs list (make sure you've
interacted first for next step to be successful). When you've got the
ones you want, use control + option + shift + m (so VO-shift-m), which
does a right mouse click or something, not sure what the sighted equiv
is, which should bring up a menu. Then go down to "Add to playlist",
and find the playlist you want. That's how I sync my iPhone, iPod, and
my friend's iPod, which is also syncing with my library, without any
leakage. If the menu doesn't come up, chances are, you're not
interacting with the songs list, do this with VO-shift-down arrow.

Don't forget, iTunes is first and foremost designed for the sighted,
so I would honestly be surprised if you can put sound files (Which I
assume your described films are), into the movies area. Instead, you
could build them into an audiobook (see my answer above), and chuck
them into your books section, same with the books, or just go command
i, and tell iTunes they're books.

HTH, and sorry for all the ramblings.

Well considering the source and it's legendary journalistic integrety, not much.

Accessibility is making them some money and gaining them a lot of loyalty
amongst this and other elements of the blind community, and they love that sort
of thing. Apple is as much a marketting company as it is a electronics one. I'm
confident that accessibility will continue to be addressed in any succession

I believe your fears to be unfounded. If APple were to make such a decision, it
would have nothing to do with Steve Jobs and instead on a business-based
reason. At this point the horse has left the barn as they say, so as others
have said and I concur, the probability of accessibility being dropped is
unlikely.

Earle,

That just solves the problem, only go the way of the VM. See the VM is supreme
since you can close Windows when it acts poorly. :) Actually I have been very
pleased with the entire concept of the VM and now I can actually enjoy only
using the things in windows I absolutely must. However, I would like to just

track selection

2011-02-18 Thread Robert Hooper
I last posted this message with another subject, but as it seems to have
slipped under the radar, here it is again.
I am glad to say that the use of Garage Band, although different than other
programs with which I am used to working, is fairly simple. My question is in
regards to track selection. If I only want to manipulate a few measures of a
track, how would I do so? Let's say I wished to select measures 4-13 for
purposes of copying that particular track's content to the clipboard for later
pasting or use in the project; or maybe there were a few recording mistakes I
wish to rectify without having to do another retake of the track. Maybe I want
to delete measures 4-13 or replace them with silence-I could also wish to apply
a certain effect to this selected portion of track. How is this accomplished?
Furthermore, let's say I wish to select parts of a guitar and piano track
(measures 4-13), but omit another guitar, bass, and drum track. Is this
possible? I know that Garage Band has limited capabilities as an audio editor,
but until I can afford ProTools, this is what I'm limited to using. Any help
would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Re: track selection

2011-02-18 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

To select a portion of a track, you need to split it up into regions. For
example, you want measures 4-13 like you mentioned. You would go to the track
and press command T to split at the beginning of the 4th measure. Then move
ahead to the beginning of measure 14 and press Command T again. Now you should
have 3 regions. 1-4 4-13 and 14 to the end of the track. Now you can just find
the region containing the measures you need and cut or copy it to the
clipboard. Unfortunately, this will not work when wanting to add effects to a
certain part of the track. You will actually have to cut out the region, and
paste it to a new track and apply the effects to a different track.

Re: solona.net — tactile screen protectors

2011-02-18 Thread Carolyn Haas
Hi Brandon:
Works with the iPhone just fine. Sure, not the best for on the go. But, an
option. The other thing she may want to try is setting orientation to the
landscape mode, to give her more keyboard space, or, use a couple rubber bands
to help with orientation.

Hi:
Ok, where did this info come from? Do we even know if it's true? How can you

Hi Kary,

I am able to access profile, messages, friends, etc on m.facebook.com and have
no problems reading, posting and liking.

What's your mac make, model, OS version, browser version? I assume you've
rebooted and tried the same thing with no other apps or web pages open?

Is anything else listed if you open the application or window chooser menus
while the Safari busy issue is happening?

Take a Survey: Text-to-Speech Delivery of Description of
Web-based Video

WGBH's Carl and Ruth Shapiro Family National Center for
Accessible Media (NCAM) is conducting a joint study with
IBM-Japan on the feasibility of using text-to-speech software to
deliver descriptive narration of Web-based video. No worries-
we're not considering uses synthesized voices to describe movies
and TV, just video that appears on the Web (and that is
proliferating at a rapid pace). A survey is posted now at the
URL below. We invite people who are blind or have low vision and
who are over 18 years of age to take the survey, which will be
posted until Friday, March 4. It is fully accessible with screen
readers, and should take between 45-60 minutes (though folks
report finishing it in less time).

formatting backup disc

Hi all,

I hope you are having a wonderful day. I hope someone can help me. I'm trying
to format a disc to do TIme Machine backups on. THe hard drive I had the
backups on died. I'm thinking I need to reformat it and do the backup again. I
have to take my Macbook to Apple as it will not hold a charge. I want to back
up all data beforehand in case the battery needs to come out. Can anyone send
me instructions on how to format the drive? Thank you in advance.

Musically,

2011-02-18 Thread Scott Granados
Well, personally, if he only had 6 weeks to live I don't think he would be
going out much and he was spotted out last night at a meeting of tech
executives and Obama at the home of a venture capitalist. Everyone was there
including the founder of facebook, Chambers from Cisco, Steve Jobs and folks
from a bunch of other companies.

Hopefully someone will get him a liver quick since there's already talk of
adding a slide out keyboard to the IPhone and a bunch of other bad ideas.
Steve, we need you, Apple will be ruined with out your hand at the helm.

 Hi,

We have been kicking around the idea of getting a couple of new macs for a

The main thing that is holding us back is our heavy reliance on Kurzweil. I
am a grad student and we also use k1000 for scanning our mail daily. I
 know
we could either do a duel boot system or run a virtual machine and then can
use k1000 this way on the mac, but I wanted to ask knowledgable folks first
about this before we jumped in.

We heard about another kurzweil product that is for the mac, but it's not
self voicing, and I don't know if vo works with it. Does anybody have any
mac specific solutions that work well for scanning text books? For
 scanning
the types we all get in the post? I use the bookmark features in k1000
quite a lot, plus the dictionary a lot and have preferred it a lot for the
proof reading I do for book share over ms word.

Oh, that's actually another question, we were told that pages actually
 isn't
 that great or useable...

Lots of this info is coming from people who don't use vo regularly.

For us, though, this scanner stuff is the only thing standing in the way.
We do have a old power book, but it's the old non intel mac, so we're stuck
running leopard on it, can't do a virtual machine or anything on it, it
doesn't support the magic track pad, and we can't upgrade to snow leopard
 or
anything beyond what we already have on it(we already called apple about
 it).

Any help or anything would be appreciated!

 Thanks,
 Caitlyn

FOrmatting backup disc

2011-02-18 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi Sarah,

Thank you for the helpful hint. I don't see the HSF format you spoke of though.
Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place. Hmm, I went under disc utilities and then
saw format mac os extended jurnaled, mac journaled. I erased all my data on the
disc and I'm now backing up again. It seems to work perfectly right now. Any
suggestions ideas? Thank you again.

VO's response-time to keystrokes slowing down.

2011-02-18 Thread Phantom.Vader
Hi again!

Uh, had something weird happen today. I was working in Garage-band
today, yes, finally got some of the loop issues figured out, and VO
started being *really* slow to respond to keystrokes! As in, like,
I'd press a key, including VO navigation keys, and it would take like
ten full seconds or more to speak! It's never done that to me before,
at least, never that badly or for that long. Anybody know what was
with that? It kind of scared me, because that kind of stuff used to
happen often with Jaws, usually just before it crashed. Have any of
you ever had this happen and know what's causing it?

Thanks!

Re: VO's response-time to keystrokes slowing down.

2011-02-18 Thread Earle M. Harrison
In the Applications folder you will find a utility called disk utility. You
can do a spotlight search for disk utility and probably get it as a top hit.
From the first aid tab, do a verify disk and then repair disk permissions to
see if that improves the situation. If you are using less than 4 GB of memory
you might consider investing in more memory. Also recommend not using system
HD for recording projects, rather using a firewire external drive because audio
is going to eat storage space like mad which will inevitably have a negative
effect on over-all performance. HTH.

Best,

Earle Harrison

Re: scanning and the mac

2011-02-18 Thread David Tanner
It isn't Fusion that is the problem. The issue is if you try to run Windows
without running it as a virtual machine. The sound usually works if you are
running Windows through Fusion as a virtual machine. But, if you choose to
boot to Windows instead of booting into Snow Leopard and boot directly into
Windows there is a good chance that you will not have any sound in Windows
due to some kind of sound driver problem that Apple and Microsoft neither
seem to have a good answer to. But, luckily it only happens on the MacBook
Pro 13. I have the MacBook Pro 15 and have never had the problem with mine
or any of the about 15 machines that I have setup with both Windows 7 and
Snow Leopard.

That seems quite odd, as I have a iMac and a 13 inch Macbook Pro, and VM
Fusion is fine on the Macbook. I also have the iPal Solo (stand alone
version of the iPal). I opted for this as I did not realise at the time
they were working on Mac software.

On 18 Feb 2011, at 01:40, David Tanner wrote:

You are right on, the only accessible OCR for Mac right now is Eye-Pal
which has no where close to the features of Kurzweil1000. The best
solution at this time is K11000 in Windows and with the latest Fusion you
should be able to setup a hotkey so that you can actually launch K1000
while you are still in Snow Leopard and Fusion will handle getting you
over to Windows, launching K1000; which isn't half bad.

Just a word of warning here. After more than one experience; stay away
from the Mac Book Pro 13 inch laptop. There appears to be a problem with
not always getting sound on the Windows side of things which apparently
can only be solved by installing a USB soundcard to use for sound on the
Windows side of things. Again, this only seems to happen with the 13 inch
model of Mac Book Pro.

There is no solution for the Mac equal to K1000 if you use things like the
bookmark and other features of that application. The k3000 for Mac is old
and not vo-compatible and not appropriate for blind folks. Stick with
k1000 and never mind native Mac solutions if you're a power user, which it
sounds like you are. You won't be happy with other solutions that don't
offer features you're use to and don't offer anything like the convenience
of the K1000 application. I have K1000 running on a Windows machine with a
bookedge scanner by Plustek. Bootcamp or a vm may work for you. Good luck.

Re: scanning and the mac

2011-02-18 Thread David Tanner
I wish I could tell you that it is the older ones. However, we just had the
problem again two weeks ago with a brand new one. Again, if I am running
Windows as a virtual machine all is well, but if I boot directly into
Windows 7 it is a problem. At that point Fusion is not running because I am
not running Snow Leopard; I am only running Windows 7 at that point. It is
not a problem with Fusion running and Windows running in a virtual Window.

Re: scanning and the mac

2011-02-18 Thread David Tanner

Scott,

Usually using Windows through the VM is fine. However, sometimes one might
want to be able to dedicate all of the machine's memory and processing power
to something they need to do on the Windows machine. In those cases it is
nice to be able to boot directly into Windows and not loose any memory or
processing power to having Snow Leopard running in the background. It
actually works very nicely on MacBook Pro 15 and MacBook Pro 17. It is
particularly handy for the person that may be running a bit light on RAM;
like someone only running with two gigabytes of RAM.

Earle,

That just solves the problem, only go the way of the VM. See the VM is
supreme since you can close Windows when it acts poorly. :) Actually I have
been very pleased with the entire concept of the VM and now I can actually
enjoy only using the things in windows I absolutely must. However, I would
like to just stay in the Mac environment if I had my choice.

installed all the software and then imported the Boot Camp image into a VM
and this process when flawlessly; however, the next time we booted to the
Windows side of the dual boot, sound was gone. Sighted assist found that
nothing was muted and volume was at 100 percent. Reinstalling drivers
from the Apple OS CD did not resolve the problem. On calling the support
departments of both OS's, Microsoft blamed Apple, Apple blamed Microsoft
and the customer decided that working in a VM was best anyway.
Interestingly as David observed, plugging in a cheep USB sound card works
great on the Windows side of a dual boot system, but what a drag to have
to resort to this.

For us, though, this scanner stuff is the only thing standing in the
way.
We do have a old power book, but it's the old non intel mac, so we're
stuck
running leopard on it, can't do a virtual machine or anything on it,
it
doesn't support the magic track pad, and we can't upgrade to snow
leopard or
anything beyond what we already have on it(we already called apple
about

it).

Any help or anything would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Re: scanning and the mac

2011-02-18 Thread David Tanner
Clearly people are not reading the entire message before they say all is
well. Never has anything been said about not having sound when running
Windows under VM Ware Fusion. The issue is when running Windows by itself
without Snow Leopard. So, it really doesn't make any sense to post a
message saying that you aren't having a problem with sound in Windows when
you are using Fusion. That isn't the problem, and that was said from the
very beginning.

Problem with the latest version of Audio Hijack Pro

2011-02-18 Thread Ricardo Walker
hi Guys.

This week I updated audio hijack pro. After the update, I was no longer able
to record system audio along with my microphone. This was the case for my USB
mic, and the Macbook pros internal mic. So in other words, Recording system
audio doesn't record the input once it has been selected and hi jacked. I went
to my time machine back up and copied the older version back on to my MBP and
its working like it should. Can anyone duplicate this problem?

TIA.

Re: Problem with the latest version of Audio Hijack Pro

2011-02-18 Thread Ray Foret Jr
What I reckon you need to do is this.

1. Completely delete Audio Hijack Pro from your system but you can keep the
audio Hijack plist pref file.
.

2. Download the newest version.

3. Install it.

4. Install the instant highjack component.

That should take care of it.

Re: VO's response-time to keystrokes slowing down.

2011-02-18 Thread Ricardo Walker
Yeah.

This is a RAM issue. I've noticed it happening more of late though. Usually,
just pressing command tab to switch from garageband to the finder or another
app, and pressing it again to go back to garageband, seems to solve the
problem. And of course, cycle VO off and back on with command F5.
