Apple TV and Netflix?
Hi all, My husband and i are sitting here looking at the Apple site, and can't figure this out. Do you have to have a monthly subscription to NetFlix? We don't want to have to pay a monthly fee, and then rental fees on top of that. restoring an album to iTunes

I don't even see a folder called itunes media. I wonder if the apple store in the UK or points east will have the same black Friday sales as we will in the U.S. I'm gonna buy an Apple TV but was waiting to see if it is gonna be on sale after nidnight. If any of you folks on the other side of the atlantic are up that late and see it on sale before our Friday starts, please pass along. Re: Apple TV and Netflix?
$8 for unlimited streaming is a good deal IMHO. You get a free one month trial, so you can check it out at no cost if you cancel prior to the end of your one month. For an extra $2 a month, you can get 1 dvd at a time from their mail service as well, which gives you access to a lot more material. I streamed a movie on my Mac last night and was not able to find any controls using vo. Somebody on another list had said the netflix player was accessible on the Mac, but I didn't find it so. Still, since the site is fully accessible, including the "play" button to start movies, its still a good deal. And I've seen reference to the app being accessible on the IPad. Definitely beats rentals on ITunes. Mary Mary Otten motte...@gmail.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: making mp3 into ringtone
Hi Anouk, You wrote: Hi everyone, I have a smallish mp3 that I would like to make into a ringtone. It is currently located on my computer. Can anyone explain to me how I can make it into a rihgtone and put it in my iphone so I can start using it as a standard ringtone? Thanks, Greetings, Anouk, I'll cc this to the macvisionaries list. Since you're using a Mac, the easiest way to make your mp3 file into a ringtone is to add the mp3 file to your iTunes library and then use an AppleScript called "Make Ringable" that you can get from Doug Adams' "AppleScripts for iTunes" web site: http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=makeringable This is a Mac-only solution. You can read the short description of the script under the "Make Ringable v1.1" heading, and find complete details in the viewable "Read Me" PDF that follows the download link after the short description. If this is the first time you're using AppleScripts in iTunes, you'll have to create a Scripts folder in your account under: ~/Library/iTunes/ Then, any AppleScripts that are placed in that folder show up as menu options under a special Scripts menu for that application on the menu bar (in this case, iTunes), that appears to the left of the "Help" entry. You select your track or item, then navigate to the Scripts on the menu bar, arrow down and select the AppleScript option you want to apply. In this case, the script looks for the start and stop times you selected (e.g., you used the "Get Info" shortcut of Command+I -- or Control+I in Windows -- then navigated to the "Options" tab and entered a start and stop time for the section of the track you want to play). You can skip this if your track is shorter than the maximum allowed time for a ringtone (39 seconds). When you run the script, the dialog window that appears after you highlight your track, then select the "Make Ringable" menu option from the Scripts menu on the iTunes menu bar displays the start and stop times (and the current length for the ringtone), and prompts you to enter a Ringtone name (otherwise uses the same name as your track). If no start and stop times are set, you're prompted with to do so, and given the opportunity to exit the script. The script then coverts the sections to a ringtone of the specified length and the correct format, and adds it to your ringtones library. You're then asked whether you want to reset the start and end times to the whole track before exiting the script. The original mp3 file is left in your music library, and the new ringtone shows up in your ringtones library. If you have the "MoveAddict" software that allows you to move files, cut, paste, and merge on the Mac, or if you're using one of the move AppleScripts, you can just use those options to put the AppleScript in the /Library/iTunes/Scripts folder under your user account. Otherwise, just copy and paste to that location. So, for a first time AppleScript user, the directions would be: 1. In Finder, press Command-Shift-H (go to your home directory) 2. Command-Shift-G ("Go to Folder" shortcut) and then either type or paste in: Library/iTunes into the text of the dialog box, and press "Return". (Navigate to the Library/iTunes folder in your account). 3. Command-Shift-N to create a new folder and name it "Scripts", with a capital "S". If you already have a Library/iTunes/Scripts folder in your account you can skip these three steps. 4. After downloading the "Make Ringable" AppleScript, either copy or move it (and the ReadMe instructions) to your ~/Library/ITunes/Scripts folder. If you copy the AppleScript, the Finder actions are: 4a. Command-C (copy) 4b. Command-Shift-H (go to your home directory) 4c. Command-Shift-G ("Go to Folder") then type or paste in: Library/iTunes/Scripts into the text box of the dialog window, and press "Return" 4d. Command-V (paste) 5. Now, when you're in iTunes, there will be a Scripts menu on the iTunes menu bar, so after highlighting a track in your music library: 5a. Control-F2 (or VO-M) to the menu bar, then Left Arrow twice to the Scripts menu 5b. Arrow down to "Make Ringable" and press "Return" 5c. Follow the script dialog options. You can also assign shortcut keys to the AppleScript options, but you should do this when the application (here, iTunes) is not running, since these get defined and loaded when the application starts up. Doug's AppleScripts for iTunes site has many excellent AppleScripts. The site is donationware, which means that you're free to download and use these scripts, but if you really find them useful, you're encouraged to send in a donation, since he writes these for free in addition to his regular job. mb pro
hi all, i have a mb pro too and it is a fifteen inch. i have to say that my mb pro is the only computer that i use now. i have not used my windows computer since receiving mymb pro on october, 19/ 2010. i do not infer that i will ever go either. it is so easy to use much more easier then windows or jawws could ever be. it too me eight years to learn half of what ifs had to offer and then after getting my mb pro last month it only took me a few days tto learn soome of the basics and it was not difficult at all either. i hope that you really do enjoy your mb pro very much. sincerely, chenelle and happy thanksgiving everyone. re: mb pro
hello listers, i wanted to reply to something that a particular lister had stated. for the life of me i cannot recollect the persons name but i do recall them discussing that they were going to purchase their husband a ipod nano. I DO NOT WANT TO SOUND HARSH OR ANYTHING HOWEVER, IF he already has an iphone 4 then he would not have to have a separate ipod to listen to his music. due to the fact that there is an ipod already installed into the iphone 4 device. bye the way, which iphone 4 does your husband have? a 16 gig or a 32 gig iphone!. my advice to you is to purchase him a wireless keyboard for sixty nine dollars then he could hook it up to his iphone and surf the internet/text message or email people without having to use his index finger to preform these type of actions. i hope this helps. chenelle have a nice thanksgiving to all. Re: Convert text files to audio for Itunes and Ipod.
Hi, I just tried this and it worked fantastic, except that the rate is way too slow, and the command line to bring the rate up didn't work for me. Is there a fix for this? I really need to bump the speed up a smidgin. Alex is so slow that I can hear artifacts in the audio from the system trying to stretch the syllables. Re: Mac Book Pro
I must admit I'm not even the slightest bit tempted by the air. It's more money off the shelf then the mbp and doesn't have desktop replacement features that I need like a fast processor or an optical drive to name a couple. I'd seriously prefer a windows netbook, or a netbook meant to run windows, hacked to run vinux. It would have more or less the same hardware at a third of the cost and might actually be smaller and lighter, even if it doesn't get as good battery life. Gone are the days when I built my own computers and had a desktop for email, another for network serving, another for file serving, a couple that just burn cd's and dvd's... These days my one beleaguered laptop not only does all of that except for network serving, but it does so with four operating systems. I just don't see the air taking that kind of abuse. Re: Apple TV and Netflix?
Hi Donna, If I'm understanding the situation correctly, there are two ways to watch movies on the Apple TV. The first involves renting movies or tv shows through Apple. if you do things this way, you don't need a subscription to netflix since you aren't dealing with them at all. The other option is to watch movies through netflix. In this case you have a monthly subscription to the service, but you are not charged separately for each rental. The catalog of content available through iTunes may have some items not available yet on netflix, or the other way around. If I had an apple TV, I'd probably do much of my viewing through netflix for no extra charge, and then check the Apple catalog if I couldn't find something I wanted on netflix. The Apple site makes it seem that you can only connect this thing to an HD Television. I still only have a basic Standard Definition TV, so if this is the case I'll have to say no thanks to this unit. Does anyone know if you can use this with an older Television? You'd have to interact with each one and that can become tedious. I simply select all on the page with VO-A and then paste it in TextEdit and tweak it there. Re: Speaking New Line when reading using voice over
That would be really nice, but if there is a way to prevent it from saying "new line," I would love to know it, too. I consider this right up there with the inability of not having a way to make it stop announcing lists and tables in a web page as probably the two most annoying, non-productive time wasters in the program. That sounds really negative, but it is not meant to be. I hope this can be addressed in a future version of VO.
