Re: bookshare books
There is Book Worm and InDaisy. I gather InDaisy supports the Daisy 3 standard. Although apparently there is a possibility Book Share may be doing something as well. COnsidering they recently conducted a survey asking about such an app for various mobile platforms. New Pages (iWork '09) support for creation of ePub documents
Hi All, For Mac users of iWorks '09, especially those who are using iBooks to read ePub documents on their iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPads, the latest software update to Pages has added an option to export as ePub. Further, Apple has issue a document outlining the best practices for creating ePub files for reading in iBooks with Pages, which also links to an "ePub Best Practices" sample document. The installer for the new feature will automatically show up if you have iWorks '09 if you run Software Update. The link to the Apple Support document on Creating ePub files with Pages is: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4168 HTH. blue miky not compatible with iphone 4
Hi list, I just called miky to ask about their new mic for iphone, and two things that make it a no go for a while to come: 1-The manufacturing has had some delay on their latest microphones for iphone and touches. 2- This one is "Light has no value without darkness" blog: http://www.theblindsamurai.com twitter: http://www.twitter.com/triple7 Tel: +64 210 22 77 190 Phnom Penh: +85589900095 the cherry on top: The iphone 4 has turned completely digital and thus any miky mic just won't work with it. It still will fill its job with previous iphone iterations but this is a bit disconcerting as i just got the fire upgrade from blue fire. I also quickly searched for a microphone on the net but since the iphone has barely come down from stock penury i reckon its going to be a while until a digital mic comes out as accessory. Re: blue miky not compatible with iphone 4
Hi Yuma, I've posted about this earlier in the month to the viphone list (and in more detail on the mac-access list). The new Blue Mikey 2 won't work with the iPhone 4 or iPad, because of the re-design to enable new digital USB recording on the iPhone 4 and iPad. However, since you have an iPad, you can still record stereo audio and use the FiRe app if you connect a USB microphone to the dock connector of your iPad using the iPad Camera Connection kit. You want to use the connector with the USB port at the other end (not the one with the SD card slot). While not every USB mic will work with this setup, a large fraction of them do, including many Pro quality mics like Blue Microphone's Yeti (probably not a real option for portable vacation traveling, since it stands higher than the iPad). In the "Recording on a IPhone/IPod:" thread earlier this month I wrote: The Blue Microphones site has updated the release date as August 20th. If you go to the web page for the BLue Mikey 2: http://www.bluemic.com/mikey/new/ and visit the "Buy Now" link, the section under the Blue Online Stores announces "Coming August 20th!" That's the latest information I've seen, apart for reports of its performance in the Audiofile Engineering forum. At present there doesn't appear to be a high quality recording option for the new new iPhone 4 and the iPad, since Apple changed the recording pin configuration on these models. This now does seem to have gone on sale (as of August 20th). While I'd probably wait for the new devices capable of USB digital audio to become available, there are solutions if you absolutely want to record in stereo with the iPhone 4. Here's a link to one page discussing "iPhone 4 (and iPad) - External Mic for Audio in Camera app (etc.)": http://www.lifeisaprayer.com/articles/photography/iphone-4-ipad-external-mic-audio-input You have to impedence match the device that you hook up, which is why the author of this page ran tests with various equipment. Also, although he was interested in using the stereo audio for movie tracks, you can run this for just audio recording. I still think it would be easier to try a USB mic that you already have with the Camera Kit of the iPad, if you want that possibility. I realize this is less flexible than carrying around your iPhone 4. HTH. Cheers, Esther Hi list, I just called miky to ask about their new mic for iphone, and two things that make it a no go for a while to come: 1-The manufacturing has had some delay on their latest microphones for iphone and touches. 2- This one is the cherry on top: The iphone 4 has turned completely digital and thus any miky mic just won't work with it. strange thing in mac
Hello, I have discovered something strange in finder: while copying a folder "info" from my usbdisc to my homedir, that has also a folder info on the top-level, finder was replacing the folder info"in the homedir with the folder info"from the usbdisc without adding the files. This means that the files that where only available in the folder info" in thee homedir, where simply deleted. This is: unsecured and also windows is more secure in that action since windows replace only files with the same name in that situation. I don't understand this also since command+x isn't available for keyboard-users because this should be insecure... What strange!!! Thanx for your reaction... best regards, William -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. yeah, what wasn't there is the ability to do option enter on the file. you had to vo shift m and then choose download linked file but you wouldn't see whether or not the file was successfully downloading. Re: strange thing in mac
Hi, you are right. This shits me no end, because I used to move 10s of gigs of stuff around with no hassels at all under windows, where-as on mac I have to comb my folders and painstakingly copy individuals or small blocks. If I were to take the albums folder from my burn folder and paste it directly overtop of the albums folder in my music folder, the system would throw out the old 70 gb albums folder and replace it with the new 10 gb albums folder. It would not sync them neetly the way windows used to. I asked here when I first noticed this happening. Fortunately it was when I was reloading my music from backup dvd's onto my macbook harddrive, so no data was lost. I never did get a satisfactory answer though. the unix shell and mac terminal
Hi Over the past few weeks I have been running vinux 3.0 lucid in a virtual machine and have been playing with it. And then recently I went into the terminal on my mac in snow leopard and typed some commands and surprisingly I find that most of the commands I can perform in vinux I can also do with the terminal or the mac's unix shell. It's really cool. The only difference I can see in the mac is that it uses the darwin kernel while vinux uses the linux kernel. Oh and guys if you go into a terminal in your mac and type: man ls you can even read the unix man pages there. The only thing that doesn't work is apt-get command. I'm not sure if dpkg works or not, I haven't tried it. I'll try right now. Well guys dpkg also does not work. The mac's shell reminds me very much of vinux 3.0 lucid though. If you type uname -a it will tell you the kernel version among other things. If you type: man ls it will bring up the man page for the ls list directory command. to quit the man pages just press the letter q,. To close terminal hit command q. You can even hit tab and it will autocomplete commands for you. I imagine the unix shell is very powerful, even on the mac. And I'm glad mac uses the bash shell. Vinux uses it too. I doubt voxin would work on the mac since voxin I think is compiled for the linux kernel and not the darwin version10 kernel. Re: the unix shell and mac terminal
Linux does have Unix origins, and the Mac shell is Unix. It's also the Bash shell, (Born Aag SHell). It's possible to do various kinds of scripting on it, but I haven't investigated that yet. Re: the unix shell and mac terminal
Just to clerify this a little, Mac is BSD based and Linux is of course System V. So there are some pretty important differences. Anyone familiar with both flavors though would feel at home. You also have pythan and perl installed I believe with the mack. - Original Message - From: "Josh Kennedy" To: Sent: Friday, August 27, 2010 2:35 PM Subject: the unix shell and mac terminal Hi Over the past few weeks I have been running vinux 3.0 lucid in a virtual machine and have been playing with it. Re: strange thing in mac
sorry but this is unbelievable. I do a simply task in finder with strange results and you should not have this results? It's not that I don't believe you at all, but I would like to ask to do a test: e.g. you have a folder: f1, on your usbdisc with the files a b and another folder : f1 with files: c d on your homedir: /home/user/ if you chose to copy the folder f1 from /volumes/usbstic/ to /home/users/ then, the finder will ask to replace f1 or stop the action. If you chose to replace, /home/user/f1/ will have the following files in it: a and b. This means the files c and d are lost... Pls , let me know who has also this result... of course , the path- and filenames are just a example. Op 28-aug-2010, om 00:57 heeft Sarah Alawami het volgende geschreven: > Nope no issues for me. the only box with seconds as a unit is under call forwarding. I checked this box, even though I don't have any numbers to forward my calls to, hoping that voice mail will use it as well. The "automatically send unanswered calls to voice mail," box was already checked, but it wasn't working; hopefully changing the seconds value in the call forwarding section will apply as well to voice mail. • Mark BurningHawk Baxter • AIM, Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 • MSN: burninghawk1...@hotmail.com • My home page: • http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Scott, it is on blindcooltech.com and I think it is podcast number 5. I installed VM Fusion on my MBP and it works great with Win 7. I use JFW and am stilll having trouble mapping keys. I can use it, but I don't have an applications key, and insert key, thus can't get a Jaws cursor, but other than that, no sweat. I downloaded Sharp Keys, but still can't quite figure out how to use it. If anybody has any suggestion there, I'd love to hear them. :) On Aug 27, 2010, at 7:52 PM, Scott Granados wrote: > Hi, for a while there was a podcast from Mike Arego (sorry if I spelled the > name wrong) concerning VM fusion. I have 3 macs now, while I still run windows XP on my macs occasionally for a couple things, by far, I use the mac for most things now and it's great. I don't miss the PC at all. Instructions for Kobo Books: How to change to scrolling mode and do table of contents navigation
Hi All, As a follow-up to recommendations of Kobo as a way of buying recent commercial eBooks to read in accessible form on the iPhone using the free "eBooks for Kobo" app, I thought I would post instructions for how to change to scrolling mode, and a description of how ebook navigation behaves in this mode. • eBooks for Kobo (free) by Kobo Inc. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ebooks-by-kobo/id301259483?mt=8 If you change your default settings for the page transition style to "Scrolling", then at the start of a chapter you'll hear VoiceOver say "link image" at both the top left corner of the page, and at the top right corner of the page, and you'll similarly find "link images" at the bottom left and right corners of the page when you reach the end of a chapter. These controls will let you advance to the next chapter or move back to the previous chapter without having to toggle VoiceOver off. Double tapping the "link image" at the top right corner at the start of a chapter (bottom right corner at the end of a chapter) advances you to the start of the next chapter, while double tapping the "link image" at the top left corner at the start of a chapter (bottom left corner at the end of a chapter) puts you back into the previous chapter (but at some point towards the end of the book). Also, in "scrolling" mode you can use three finger flicks up (or down) to page through the chapter (e.g. VoiceOver advances the page number from "page 15 of 59" to "page 16 of 59" when I do a three finger flick up), and doing a four finger flick up takes me to the start of the chapter, while doing a four finger flick down takes me to the end of the chapter. Both of these points are marked by a "link image". In the case of the start of the chapter, these are the "link image" at the top left of the page which, when double tapped, will move me to the previous chapter (in the middle, a few pages from the end), while if you flick right or touch the "link image" in the top right corner and double tap, you will be taken to the start of next chapter, as previously described. When you do a four finger flick to the end of the Chapter, your focus is on a "link image" at the bottom right corner of the screen which, when double tapped, will advance you to the start of the next chapter. Flicking left from here to the bottom left corner gives you the "link image" that takes you to the previous Chapter. It would be nice if these "link images" were labeled "Previous Chapter" and "Next Chapter", but this works pretty well. To access "Settings" in order to change the page transition style to "Scrolling" in the present version of the "eBooks for Kobo" app (version 3.4, released August 20, 2010), once you've opened a book and started reading, do a double tap in the center of the screen. This should bring up the controls for configuring your reading. (Comment: now that I'm set up for "Scrolling", my focus tends to come up at the link to navigate to the first chapter when I open a book. If you have this problem, and want to bring up the controls, first touch some area in the center of the screen first, like the title, or cover graphic, before you do your double tap. If all else fails, toggle VoiceOver off with triple click home, then use the standard gesture of tapping the center of the screen to bring up controls, and toggle VoiceOver back on. I generally don't have to do this any more, but it's a standard remedy for working with the less accessible ebook apps.) There will be an "I'm reading" button in the top left corner (that takes you back to your library), and an "icon underscore gear" button in the top right corner. I don't do a two finger flick "read all" gesture here, because, at least in scrolling mode for the page transition, VoiceOver reads the top controls, but then moves to the page text, and doesn't take you to the controls in the bottom half of the page until it has read through the text. To get to the "Settings" menu, move your finger down along the right side of the screen from the "icon underscore gear" button at the top right corner until you hear VoiceOver say "Display settings, button" just a little below the center of the page. Double tap this button. At the settings menu page, flick right to "Page Transition Style". The options will be "Plain", "Page Flip", "Page Fade", "Page Curl", and "Scrolling". Double tap "Scrolling" so that it is selected. Then either touch or navigate to the "Back" button at the top left (e.g., with a four finger flick up), and double tap to return to where you brought up page controls. Another useful thing to know is how to get to the Table of Contents if you want to read through the overview of chapters and move to specific chapter. This control used to be accessed from an "Info related" button at the top left of your book. To get to the table o

Ah right no application key. Hmmm, no application keys might be challenging. Someone detailed remapping earlier that might work. I just got Fusion installed today with JFW and I was surprised how simple that was. I only had to have the helpdesk set up the jfw for me and bind the VM to the domain controler. Need Mac User's advice on which Windows screen reader to purchase and learn
I realize the question might sound strange and even off-topic, but I really want to hear this advice from fellow Mac and VO Users. When I last used Windows I was able to get by with a screen magnifier and didn't use a screen reader. By the time I needed to start using a screen reader I had already moved to the Mac full time so VO was the natural choice. Now I'm being required to start using Windows again, along with Office 2007 and Internet Explorer 8 and I'm not sure which Windows screen reader I should invest my time and money to learn, or if one of them is more like VO than the others. I will be running either XP or Windows 7 under Fusion. Please send your replies directly to me off-list as this probably isn't a thread that needs to grow here. I would be grateful for your thoughts on the following questions: 1. I've heard of Jaws, Window-Eyes, System Access, and NVDA. Any others I should consider? 2. Is there a Windows screen reader that works like VO? 3. Is there one Windows screen reader that is easier to learn than the others? 4. I was intimately familiar with XP but don't know Windows 7 at all. Are they similar enough that I should get Windows 7, or should I try to get XP so that I don't have to learn a new operating system along with the new screen reader? 5. I will probably only need to use Windows for the next 2 years and most of my work will still be done on the Mac. Given this limited time frame, is one of the Windows screen readers less expensive to own over that time period? Re: Need Mac User's advice on which Windows screen reader to purchase and learn
Jaws is more or less the standard in terms of you'll run in to that more than others. Window-eyes is another great option. I haven't used it but many many people think very highly of it. What I would do if I were you is take that Mac, set yourself up a virtual machine and try the demo copies of all the options you listed. Read the manual / ask questions and you should be able to bootstrap yourself. You may need help creating the VM for Windows I had a help desk not sure your situation although there is a podcast that details this process. I like Jaws myself but I have heard Window-eyes can be more stable and leaner on resources. Costs differ, JFW is probably the most expensive. Window-eyes comes with an option where you can pay for the software in installments which is a fantastic feature on a budget. Hope that helps. - Original Message - From: "Bryan Jones" To: Sent: Friday, August 27, 2010 8:52 PM Subject: Need Mac User's advice on which Windows screen reader to purchase and learn I realize the question might sound strange and even off-topic, but I really want to hear this advice from fellow Mac and VO Users. Hi Courtney, I've had an Ally for a couple of weeks. I have not found an answer to your question. In general, Google is more interested in you syncing with their server than with your computer. There is a program called Missing Sync, but I haven't yet had time to try it. If you need any other help with your Ally don't hesitate to email me off-list goodi...@msu.edu. Re: Need Mac User's advice on which Windows screen reader to purchase and learn
Hi Bryan, I love WIndow-Eyes. I have used all three screen readers Hal, Jaws and Window-Eyes. THe last one Window-Eyes is the one I use now. I have to use a WIndows PC at work, and also at home for some of the tasks like scanning and reading with Kurzweil etc. I like WE because GW Micro has a payment plan, I am on it, and have about a year left. I don't think any Windows screen reader is like VO. But Window-Eyes comes pretty close. VO interacts in a way that I have never seen among any screen readers. I like Window-Eyes for the following reasons it works with most off the shelf products, and doesn't require the installation of scripts like Jaws. The other reason I like it is that the customer support is much better than Freedom Scientific. I hope this helps answer your question. Musically, Allison My birds are winged blessings, they help me soar! Re: selecting more than one file?
Hello Conrad, To select more than one file consecutively, hold down the Shift key while moving from one file to the next. To select several noncontiguous files, Turn cursor tracking off (VO-Shift-F3), then use the VO keys and arrows to navigate to each desired file and select it using VO-Command-Space bar. Check that your selection is correct by pressing VO-F6 and copy to clipboard. Don't forget to put cursor tracking back on using the same command.
