Office 2008 is not, although the soon to be released 2010 is rumoured to be. I
would not use it though personally. There are at least three options that i
know of for Mac so far:

1. Apple's own IWork '09 which is Apple's version of Office. This is very
accessible, although ti does have a few qwerks which hopefully, Apple will work
out. I have not used this much, so I can't give you much detail beyond this. I
do plan to look more deeply into this application though. IWork can open and
save Word files, although there are a few issues with this at the moment
apparently.

2. Nisus Writer (Express & Pro) I have used both of these applications quite
extensively. They are quite accessible, but still need some work. Saying that,
they are perfectly usable for most types of document creation, including some
academic documents which use conventions such as footnotes and endnotes. Also,
the developers are very responsive and receptive to suggestions and feedback.
They can also open and save doc files and their default file format is RTF.

You can find them at: http://www.nisus.com & http://www.nisus.com/pro

3. Open Office - this is the open source office suite. Like MS Office and
IWork, it has word processing, spreadsheet and presentation abilities. There
has been some discussion on the list recently about an issue with the word
processor where there seems to be text boxes all over the place. As well as
being open source, this application is totally free. I think there is also
support for reading and creating doc files.

You can get it at: http://www.openoffice.org

4. PageHand - This word processor is a little different. For one thing.it has
quite a novel way of dealing with the numerous options that are common in most
word processors. It prefers to sue a sidebar option that is very accessible
instead of menus, although menus do still exist. It's native file format is
PDF, and as far as I know cannot save into anything else, although it can read
doc and RTF etc. Bare in mind, that this application is not yet at v. 2.0. The
developer is very responsive and always receptive and open to any suggestions
and feedback - especially where language support and accessibility are
concerned.

You can get it from: http://www.pagehand.com

Podcast Producer

2010-03-17 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hey folks,

So, given the fact I have a YouTube account and my friends are almost forcing
me to upload weird videos, I figured I'd start podcasting too. You can never
have too many podcasts!

Instead of using a Perl-programmed solution on my site like "Listgarden" from
http://softwaregarden.com I considered Apple's Podcast Producer.

It looks great when you consider the automatic workflows imbedded, not to
mention that you can customize and create your own workflows to perform various
steps with your podcasts, such as customizing the workflow to always have the
same opening videos, set the file format and quality, etc.

Podcast Producer says you can use blogs for this as well, and so I figured I'd
go ahead and try it. Of course, my blog isn't a Podcast Producer server, so
that blog part doesn't make sense to me.

Furthermore, doing some more research, is the option to create a podcasting
server only available in Mac OS X 10.6. Snow Leopard Server? This is confusing
me slightly. If not, how can I create such a server? It looks like an
intriguing solution and definitely worth the while. It looks like creating
your own server is available to everyone, though how does one do that if it
requires the server version of the Mac OS? Also, I did not think that a private
entity could obtain a copy of the server?

Re: How easy would it be for a computer beginner to learn to use voiceover?

2010-03-17 Thread Chris Hofstader
If the user is an absolute beginner, I would recommend VO highly. If they are a
long time user of a different OS/screen reader pair, it takes a little time to
adjust to the different keystrokes but VO has the advantage that it rarely
crashes in a way that will cause you to lose data.

Re: virtual box for mac

2010-03-17 Thread Chris Blouch
AFAIK the GUI is totally inaccessible. I can't even access the menu bar.
It seems like VirtualBox has somehow stopped all voiceover commands from
functioning. That said, VirtualBox does have full command like control
from the terminal. So, in a way, it's accessible. Just not via the GUI.

Snow Leopard Help Viewer question

2010-03-17 Thread mani
Hello:
When the help viewer is launched for an app, what should happen when
you click on the 'Home' button? In my case, nothing happens,
regardless of the app.
I thought you should be able to see the list of all help books on the
system and you can click on a specific one.
Any ideas as to why nothing happens in my case?

Thanks,

Problems with logging into latest version of Skype

2010-03-17 Thread phil stephenson
Hi,

Have just downloaded the latest version of Skype for mac and am stuck on
finding where I sign in with my Skype name etc. I've tried going to the
"Accounts" menu and logging as another user but as soon as I select the menu
option I'm brought back to the main application screen and can't find where to
enter my info. I've interacted with the screen and all VO is telling is that
there is a Skype TM box and a "graphic" symbol but I can't get it to tell me
anything else?

What am I dong wrong? is there another version of Skype that works well with
VO?

many thanks,

Try launching Skype and, when it launches, rather than interacting with

NetLibrary eBooks into the EBSCOhost platform. There will be no
interruption in service to libraries.

We are also announcing an important change to our FirstSearch
content services. OCLC is transitioning out of our role as reseller
of vendor-owned content. Therefore we will transfer or discontinue
sale of the vendor-owned databases on FirstSearch when subscriptions
have ended. We will instead increase our focus for both FirstSearch
and WorldCat.org on providing libraries with access to a rich set of
library-owned content and increasing visibility and access to the
full scope of a library's collection. We will work with libraries,
publishers and other information providers to expand WorldCat.org as
a comprehensive platform for eContent. As a part of this migration,
EBSCO has acquired the rights to license a select number of vendor-
owned databases that we currently offer on FirstSearch. Our long-
term relationship with H.W. Wilson is also changing as we will work
together to transition from reselling Wilson databases on
FirstSearch to indexing Wilson databases in WorldCat Local over the
coming months. There will be no interruption in service to libraries.

Please see our letter to members and news releases for more
information.

Re: Snow Leopard Help Viewer question

Silly me! It does take me to the home page. I thought it looked like
a drop-down list button and kept expecting some list of items or a
popup menu to show up.
Well, I guess it just takes you home.
Thanks,

Let's not forget TextEdit, the work processor that comes with the Mac. The
price is right, it comes with every Mac, and will do what most people want;
letters, notes, short papers, etc.

You're quite right, I'd forgotten to mention it, but there's quite a bit that
it can't do unfortunately, such as tables of contents and citations such as
footnotes. If you're a University student or an academic, these things might be
important. It's a shame, because TExtEdit is cool.

Re: why can I not see my full mac on my bootcamp partition?

2010-03-17 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
This is all dependant on the version of file system drivers that are loaded on
the specified operating system.
Windows and Macs look at files in very different ways. A Mac can read Windows
files that are created with the "FAT" file system, but not the "NTFS" file
system. And Macintosh "HFS" and "HFS+" file systems are generally not usable
via a standard windows installation.

You have a few options that are listed out quite well in "Take Control of
Running Windows on a Macintosh" book. In general, the Virtual machines can do
this translation, or you can buy third party FS drivers that will allow either
Read-Only or full access in one ddirection.

In general you are probably safer to use external disk drive formatted in FAT
and just copy the files you want. If you have an on-going need to transfer
files easily when you are in Windows, then the tools to do this cost less then
$100. But for that price you can get a reasonable flash drive too.
