Re: Program clean up

2009-04-25 Thread Esther

Hi Dan,

So far I usually clean up after deleted program files by hand.
General guidelines:

1. If the program came with an installer and uninstaller, use the
uninstaller to remove the program.
2. Otherwise, in general, just move the application to the trash.
3. Check /Library/Application Support/ and /Library/
Preferences/ (the system level libraries -- note "/"
before the folder names) and the corresponding folders on your
individual user account ~/Library/Application Support/ and ~/Library/Preferences/ (with the leading
"~" followed by "/" to indicate this is under your user account -- on
your Mac ~/Library would be the Library folder under user account
"dan", for example).

You can use the Command-Shift-G "Go to folder" shortcut in finder, and
then type or paste in any of these folders that you want to check,
e.g.:

/Library/Application Support/
/Library/Preferences/
~/Library/Application Support/
~/Library/Preferences/

Move any folders with the application name that you find under these
libraries to the trash. In addition, there may be small preference
files associated with the deleted app. These will have the app name
as part of the file name, but often will also include the name of the
company responsible for the software in the file name, e.g.:

TeXShop.plist
com.apple.iTunes.plist
org.mozilla.firefox.plist

You can also move preference files associated with deleted apps to the
trash. These files are quite small, so you can simply leave them in
the Preferences folders if you are not sure of the identification, and
don't want to chance trashing the preferences for any active apps by
mistake.

HTH. I just gave the reference to the review on file cleaning apps for
informational purposes -- I haven't tried to download each of these
and try them all out.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: introduction

2009-04-25 Thread Andrea and Zeta!

Hi there, thanks for the intro. I went to an apple shop today and I saw the
leopard software in action. It's good, but I was told that I need to buy two
other things for blind and partially sighted users. I don't know how true
this is, as the newest mac in the shop apparently needs these two
applications. I can't remember what they are, but maybe someone would have a
better idea?
take care love

Re: introduction

2009-04-25 Thread Jessi Rathwell

Andrea,
you don't need to buy anything separate, well unless you want a
braille display and then you'd have to buy one of those. but as far as
using a mac with leopard, all you need is the computer. voiceover,
like it did in tiger, comes built into leopard.

 Hi, Andrea:

I was using a Mac back in the early 1990's with OutSpoken, which
 was
not built in to the OS. I would say that Voiceover in the latest
version of Leopard is similar to but far superior to that. I just

Re: readiris ocr installed

2009-04-25 Thread Justin Harford

From here I had to have my mom's help when I purchased readiris
because I can't read the number on the package, what you're thinking
perhaps? I actually went and downloaded readiris off of a torrent…
gimme a break I had purchased it legally already. Anyway, those
illegal downloads are nice at times, well quite often, because they
give you the serial number in a text file all you need to do is copy
and paste it.

2009-04-25 Thread Fonzie

Hey there Andrea.

How are you doing? I hope your doing well.

Welcome to the list. I hope you enjoy your stay.

Please fill free to ask any questions from us, and people will chime
in as they can.

You do not need to buy anything for the mac at all. The only things
you may want, and it is your preference, is accessories. These
include braile displays, and so fourth. Again, that is you
preference. VoiceOver comes built into the OS, and is immediately
available for you to access upon using your new computer.

I hope this helps.
