iMac and USB Headset

2009-02-28 Thread Robert Carter

Hi,

I have a logitech USB headset that is plug and play on my Windows machines.
When I plug it into the iMac, however, neither VoiceOver or multimedia comes
through the headset. Do I have to do something to get the iMac to switch to
using the headset?

Thanks,

Robert Carter

Re: More list biz, please read…

2009-02-28 Thread rayna424

Hi Everyone. First I gotta say that this group has been so very
helpful, and if I made it sound like I didn't want emails, I didn't
mean it that way. I did have a member say something in that regard and
I felt terrible. I've always made some great friends here by talking
in email. That said, I'll clarify what I had said earlier.

I'm brand new to email lists. Before I went blind, I did forums and it
was great, because everything was in the forum in one tidy place. So
when I joined this group, I selected in my settings that I would view
group online only. Then I started getting emails in my mailbox. I use
gmail so I thought they were all people responding to my post
privately. The way gmail works is that emails using the same subject
fall into a conversation. At least thats what I thought. Whats
happening for me is, google groups communicates with gmail since
they're both google. So if someone replys to me directly from my post,
it falls into the same quote gmail conversation, as the replies I get
here on the board. Because even though I have email turned off, I
guess the way the group settings are, you automatically get replies in
your email from topics you've started. Is that right? So I was getting
incredibly confused, getting so many emails in my box that I was up to
thirty or so. That along with trying to understand my computer had me
in tears the other night LOL.

I am in no way complaining about getting help, and I am in no way
saying not to email me directly. I guess I'd just rather not not get
replies that people post to the board to arrive in my inbox as well. I
come here to read stuff so its pointless to get in my inbox too.

I feel like I shouldn't talk since I'm a newbie, but if I was affected
this way as a newbie, I just think about future newbies. And this
board just plain kicks butt as far as I'm oncerned. Ya'll are the
nicest people I've found as far as techie help and fun chats in my
email.

So, thats my two cents. And thank you for clarifying that we can post
in threads to our heart's content as long as its on topic and not one
liners. I used to moderate a forum, so I understand completely the on
topc. Oh and as far as sending to author only, thats what the button,
reply to author, does, right?

Thanks for all your help everyone, and please don't think I don't want
emails k?

Smiles and hugs and a million thanks,
RandiOh ps, I just listened to what I wrote and heard that I typed I
always make friends here and I meant to type I already made friends
here tee hee.

Almost got yahoo, got a problem

2009-02-28 Thread rayna424

Hi all. Through your help, I've gotten much closer. I'm gonna describe
what I'm running in to.

I go to doc. I arrow to downloads. I arrow and bring up the menu and
and managed to open downloads. I do command O to open yahoo. It brings
up the license agreement. I select I agree. Then it says, system has
new window. Finder has new window. And the nothing. No keys I hit do
anything. It just beeps at me. I tried VO space, command O, shift
arrow, just the arrows. Enter, tab. It all just beeps. I give up and
am able to bring up spotlight to get back to Safari.

What am I doing?

Thanks,
Randi

Re: iMac and USB Headset

2009-02-28 Thread John Sanfilippo

Hmm, you know, I have seen references to USB head sets for quite a
while. It has always left me wondering why bother?

If a computer has audio in and out jacks and the internal sound card
is capable of decent playback and recording, and, given the usual high
demand for USB connections of other peripherals, what is so great
about USB head sets?

I'm just wondering. Personally, I do not see the need for it.

Best regards,

Re: Almost got yahoo, got a problem

2009-02-28 Thread Fonzie

Hey there, how goes it?

I hope all i well.

Hmm, perhaps VO has lost focus on where your supposed to be?

Try the following.

Application Chooser Menu

See what is on there. You heard, Finder has new window, System has
new window, correct? Well, those will appear in your application
chooser menu, of which you can arrow up and down. To expand that
item, just hit your right arrow, and a new menu will pop up, upon
which, arrowing up and down, will giv eyou what is there. See what
you find under that area. Pay close attention to what is under the
system area, as that is wher eyou will most likely want to be going.

Also, if you try holding Command, and then hitting tab, while still
holding command, you can cycle through the programs openned See if
you find yahoo anywhere, and if so, let go once found, and see if you
can continue using VO from there on.

Report back what you find.

Take care

Fonzie.

A Couple Basic Browsing and Mail Questions

2009-02-28 Thread Kelly Ford

Hello,

I was hoping folks might be able to answer a couple basic questions
around web browsing and mail for me. I've looked through the
different VoiceOver settings and such.

What's the best way to do any sort of continious reading on a web
page? For example, I navigate with headings and such and get to the
point where I want to read a news article. Is there any equivalent to
a Window-Eyes read all or JAWS Say All command at that point? Right
now I'm just navigating item by item to read the text. But this gets
a bit tedious.

In the mail program is there any method to hear just the data, not
column headings, in the message list? I do not for example
necessarily want to hear "subject" before each subject is read.

Thanks,

Kelly

Hi guys, I've gotten a few replies to this in my email that aren't
here so I'm just gonna do a general reply here.

Some of what has been suggested is feeling a little too advanced for
me haha. I am accessing yahoo im from the downloads folder. I go to
doc and then to downloads and open it from there. When I click on the
disk icon, thats when it brings up the license agreement. I agree and
thats when it says system has new window, finder has new window. Thats
when it gets lost. I forgot to pay attention to the file extension to
know whether I need to install it or move it or whatever. Quite
honestly I'm thinking about giving up on it LOL. There are just people
on my contacts list who I've lost touch with. I'm talking with someone
on the phone on Tuesday, so that will probably get me further than
trying stuff from the messages. I'll kep playing with it though. I've
navigated around a lot more today thanks to what I've learned from
ya'll. I managed to launch ichat and bring up my old aim account, but
it didn't bring up my old contacts. Slow but sure, slow but sure. :)

Re: Almost got yahoo, got a problem

2009-02-28 Thread Victor Tsaran

Feel free to drop me a line. Yahoo! Messenger is pretty usable and there
are lot of shortcut keys. Here are some tips:
COMMAND+1-10 -- conversation windows. So when you hear someone ping you,
simply pick one of those windows.
By default, you will be dropped into the text field where you can type.
If you want to read incoming messages, use your VO cursor to navigate to
the object that says "HTML Content". Press
CONTROL+OPTION+SHIFT+DownArrow to begin interacting with it. All your
messages will be there. Start typing and you will be automatically
transferred into the text field
You can find out more shortcut keys by looking at the menus.

Good luck,
Victor

Hi all. Through your help, I've gotten much closer. I'm gonna describe
 what I'm running in to.

I go to doc. I arrow to downloads. I arrow and bring up the menu and
and managed to open downloads. I do command O to open yahoo. It brings
up the license agreement. I select I agree. Then it says, system has
new window. Finder has new window. And the nothing. No keys I hit do
anything. It just beeps at me. I tried VO space, command O, shift
arrow, just the arrows. Enter, tab. It all just beeps. I give up and
am able to bring up spotlight to get back to Safari.

 What am I doing?

 Thanks,
 Randi

Re: Almost got yahoo, got a problem

2009-02-28 Thread Cara Quinn

   Randi, Congrats!

Okay, so hear are a couple of really useful commands for you.

VO F2 twice quickly will bring up the window chooser. This will show
you a list of all of the windows VO can currently see. From here you
can press return on a window and you'll be brought into it, which
means you'll then be able to navigate around within it with VO and
read what's there.

The next command is VO F1 twice quickly, which will bring up the
application chooser. this also, is a list, but this time you're
seeing all of the running applications (or programs) on your system.
Pressing return on one will either bring you into its window or bring
you to a submenu of its open windows. Pressing return on any of those
will bring you into it so once again, you'll be able to navigate
around within it with VO so you can read what is there.

Have you been able to access the VO getting started tutorial?… It
should discuss some basic VO commands for you.

Anyway, hope this helps and don't worry, this will only get
easier!

   Have a terrific night!…

Smiles,

Cara :)

So guess what? I got it running!! It doesn't work very well. But its
kinda there. Wow. Don't know how I did it. Now I think I just need to
know more commands to interact with it. My boyfriend sent me a test
message and it worked. Couldn't hear myself type to replyt though.
Probably will only use it to get back in touch with people. Whew.
