Convert Mac Word and Thesis to LyX
Hi, I hope I am in the correct space. — I have prepared a thesis for a PhD (75K words)and approx 80 figures, the text in Mac-word and the figures are in Adobe Illustrator so I have some flexibility in Format. Also there are many references. I hold all my references and comments on them in Bookends. I regret not looking at lyx/latex and using them much earlier so I am looking for an easy way to migrate this info into Lyx and I am also looking for a Thesis template. I have dowloaded and installed Lyx on my Macbook Pro (Mavericks) and been thro the intro etc. I am trying to minimise the effort in migration to Lyx so any comments and advice is most welcome. Thanks in anticipation Regds Brian Kneller -- lyx-users mailing list lyx-users@lists.lyx.org http://lists.lyx.org/mailman/listinfo/lyx-users
Help Please
Hi thanks for the responses they have been most useful. I have a few questions below: I have decided to use the Manchester Uni thesis format as its very near the London Uni version. I think I am running into unnecessary difficulties because I am using my existing directory structure and Lyx has a preferred in /Library/Application Support/Lyx-2.3. I have not found a preferred structure is there one? I am stripping out the bits I don’t want from the Thesis Template such as figures , headings , labels etc all have an index of some form where should these be stored & how do I ensure these are reset or can I copy the template into the template subdirectory , which is currently empty and then start a new doc from this. I have loaded revtex4-1 into the shared area subdir but cannot see it from the Doc/settings in the lyx main menu should it be there? I like the use of Letterine for the first char of a section, how is this \lettrine{I}{n}and the following invoked :-- Figure~\ref{shuffle_diagram}; \label{Shuffle} and where is the definitions of these –I have not found (yet) where this is described an indication where I could look would be helpful. I suspect they are under the Lyx-Code environment in the dropdown top lefthand side of menu – but there is no list below it. Sorry for these simple questions but I need to complete this soon Many Thanks Brian K-- lyx-users mailing list lyx-users@lists.lyx.org http://lists.lyx.org/mailman/listinfo/lyx-users
Calibri Font
Hello, I am a newbie to Lyx and I am using the Manchester PhD template on the LyX website. Before LyX all my figures and text used Calibri font, it would be great if I could use this in my LyX rendering. I have been on the web and found several options however the solutions are dependant on several modules being present - what is required for Lyx please? Thanks in advance ( if I am addressing the wrong groups [please let me know) Brian Kneller -- lyx-users mailing list lyx-users@lists.lyx.org http://lists.lyx.org/mailman/listinfo/lyx-users
difficulties registering on llists
Hi there seems to be an issue with my broad band provider in that they are trying to send my registration verification and they say the attempts have failed. Am I now registered or not and of npt what do I need to do please as I need to reply to some responses I have received on lists Thank you Brian Kneller -- lyx-users mailing list lyx-users@lists.lyx.org http://lists.lyx.org/mailman/listinfo/lyx-users
Clipping graphics in Lyx
Hello, I have tried clipping graphics to remove white spaces and centre it on the page. I have been unable to find a detailed description as to how it should be done. From my experience I have assumed the zero in the bottom LHS of the graphic to which a pair of coordinates and associated and likewise the is another pair on the top RHS. I centre the graphic horizontally by changing the “x” values on the clipping entries and this seems to be quite easy the vertical parameters (y) are more difficult to adjust. I am finding the outcome of adjustments is difficult to predict making trimming time consuming. How does the presentation logic respond to changes in clipping values I suspect the float function interacts with this?. All my figures are one page high so I really don’t need to float (?) 1- would suppressing floating help and if so what is best way ? Hyperref clarification
Hi I am using book standard class and am installing chapters from MS Word and PDF graphics into LyX. I have hyperlinks generated between the figures list, TOC and Bibliography in the standard class without hyperref being available. The options I have tried in Docs>Settings> PDF Props seem to work and hyperref is made available through the “Use hyperref Support” option. I have not installed any new document cross refs yet in LyX as they, and the Bibliography refs already exist for manual cross referencing. I would like to automate cross reference access using hyperref and the existing cross ref ID. I understand this is automatic when creating them in LyX, however I have been unable to find a feature to enable the document reader to return from an accessed cross reference back to the point of calling or have I missed the obvious? Separate issue: after generating a PDF from source I sometimes get errors and some of these quote a line number of large value which does not reference the source file, or is it the error log and in which case how can I enumerate the lines please? Rearranging figures - reassurance
Hello, I am using the document class books for my thesis and I have numbered my figures with chapter number first and incremental number second - ie Fig 2.3 for graphic 3 in chapter 2. I wish to delete and change the order of figs . I have done this and manually updated the links (for the TOC ?). Are there any snags I could encounter by moving figures around like this? Thanks in advance Brian Kneller -- lyx-users mailing list lyx-users@lists.lyx.org http://lists.lyx.org/mailman/listinfo/lyx-users
Re: Bibliography links
Hi, I have just configured a bibliography for Lyx using a data feed from Bookends exported into Bibdesk for final tweaks . As the reference related text already exists with reference calls using Author (Date) etc, rather than complicate matters by replacing these I am considering using a simple [n] hyperlink generated by LyX manually appended to the existing text. As this number is assigned at “compile” time what happens with Lyx if I were to add or delete a reference in my bibliography would Lyx adjust the numbers to maintain the registration between the numbers and references and to provide a continuous sequence of numbers which are aligned with the correct reference with any gaps or additions taken into account? Tables
Hello, I am using Lyx 2.3.7 and having issues with the table configurations. I have been through many postings on the Web and not resolved the two following issues. The table is broader than the A4 page so I have used the rotate function in the Lyx table config. I am cutting and pasting data from an Excel spread sheet to the Lyx table, and have not used the Lyx file CSV input function because I have a version miss match in my system and I don’t really want to start changing things at this late stage when I am incorporating examiners comments. The two issues I have are. I need to insert a line between the table title and the table itself at the top of the page - I have tried various combinations of line insert using Lyx and ERT functions. - how is this done plse? I am getting the text in a cell by constraining its width via table configs however one column contains hyperlinks and here the wrapping does not work, probably due to their format? Is there a way of warping a continuous character stream into a lyx table cell of defined column width? Fwd: Including A3 PDF into A4 PDF document
Sorry wrong address ! Begin forwarded message: From: Brian Kneller Subject: Including A3 PDF into A4 PDF document Date: 28 April 2025 at 14:47:01 BST To: lyx-announce-subscr...@lists.lyx.org Hi, My document is produced using LyX V 2.3.7 and Graphics Adobe Illustrator CS4 on a Mac with OSX 10.14.6. - Document status: - reviewed by examiners (PhD thesis) One of several comments requires the ability to print certain figures as A3. I have read Stack Exchange and some LaTeX solutions and tried several and have successfully included an A3 figure but not in a float and have had several issues around captions and page number sequences which I have not been able to address. So I have succeeded in embedding a modified version A3 in size into the document using an old version of Adobe Pro and copying in the caption and page number using Adobe Illustrator. I substituted the A3 by deleting the page (A4) that is linked to the Figures index and replaced it with the modified A3 figure version. All looks well, but I have lost the link from the figure index at the document front. The item in the figure list is still highlighted, but the redirection action to the page where the figure is located is absent. First, is there an easy fix for the redirection issue directly above? How would I preserve the link when substituting the figure? Or is there a documented solution in LyX / LaTeX that can meet my requirements, or can I achieve a solution with a more recent version of LyX? I do have a new M4 Mac that has LyX 2.4.3 but have not migrated the thesis work to this as yet. Advice please
Hi I am a Lyx user and I am trying to insert larger A3 sized diagrams in my thesis. I want to include this switch in formats in LyX. via Insert External Material with the following options :: fitpaper=true, pages={1}, pagecommand={}, addtolist={1, figure, Finn the toller, \ref 1.2} which gives me Figure 1.2 Finn the Toller as A3, which is OK. But there a a couple of issues I am having difficulty reconciling and suggestions would help I attach the small lyx test I have been using and the two pdf image files I have generated several errors what do they mean - and how do I remove them ? The first PDF page has a garbled string of fig numbers and the inserted figure number and caption , how do I removed this ? I need to insert the caption and fig number on the inserted A3 sheet how do I do this please? the page margins have changed ( bigger), is this normal ? with this approach and how do I correct it? Where will I see the response ? Thanks for your help Regds Brian Kneller -- lyx-users mailing list lyx-users@lists.lyx.org https://lists.lyx.org/mailman/listinfo/lyx-users
Creating a return address with a LyX cross reference
Hello, I want to create a return address when using LyX cross references similar to the return addresses generated in the bibliography using BibTex and backref. I have tried using some hyper linking of the document sections, with no results. How can it be done or can it be done within the current release of LyX? Return from document lable
Hello, Sorry if I have missed this. I would like to use LyX cross references but I would also like to return the reader to the document location from where he/she has referenced the label from because the document is large (3GB). In some cases a label location can be accessed from many locations throughout this tome. Cross references don't seem to do it and neither do hyperlinks ( from what I have read). Is there an easy way to do this ? I did think that providing a cross reference from each relevant target label to the TOC might reduce the reader hassle but as the document it is compressed (now 500 Mb) using ghost-script, resulting in section numbering loss in the PDF reader sidebar. The latter approach also requires the reader to know where they have come from; any recommendations of a document compressor other than ghost script would also be useful. White space reduction above LyX chapter
Hello, I am in the stages of correcting my thesis to the examiners requirements. I need to reduce reduce the white space above the first page of a. chapter, I have reduced the spacing between chapter and its title by using titlesec as shown below. From what I have read the space reduction above chapter is controlled by a macro which needs editing. I am out of my comfort zone doing this - is there an easier way to do this or could I get help doing this edit please ???
