Help Please! Lyx 1.4.3 for windows Crashes after installation
Hello All, I have been trying to install Lyx1.4.3 (released Oct 4) for windows for the last two days, unfortunately after more than five attempts (install, uninstall, reinstall) I still cannot launch Lyx application successfully. Here are my installation steps: - downloaded lyx-143-4-bundle.exe - followed installation instructions - updated Miktex - ATTEMPTED to launch Lyx for the first time then each time I get an error message " Lyx has been closed because of an unexpected situation. This is most likely caused by a flaw in the software. When you open your documents again, you will be able to restore an emergency save and continue working". The details about the error are " WindowsError: [Error 2] The system cannot find the path specified: 'C\\winnt\\sy... Lyx:Done! LyxTextClassList::Read:unable to find textclass file `'. Exiting. " I used to have Lyx1.3.7 installed it worked fine. Thanks so much for your help!!! Wei

Aspell with Lyx-1.4.3 in Mandriva2007
Hi: I have a problem at spell-checking in Lyx-1.4.3 (qt front-end), that seems related with the character encoding. Aspell continues using iso-8859-x, the operating system, Mandriva2007, uses utf-8, and Lyx... well I am not sure. On the other hand I use KDE, and the default locale is pt_PT.UTF-8 At spell-checking from within LyX, with Portuguese or Spanish, the list of suggestions of Aspell is full of strange characters, something like: privà provà pé³i© But I can use Aspell within other programs without problems, for example Kwrite or KMail. Following the wiki: http://wiki.lyx.org/Tips/SettingLANG, I tried to change the LANG from pt_PT.UTF-8 to pt_PT or to pt_PT.ISO-8859-1 but without success. If I run, for example: LANG=fr_FR lyx the menus do not appear in french, as expected, but remain in Portuguese. This did not surprise me, because is the same behaviour that in Mandriva2006, but... Before to upgrade to Mandriva2007 I was using Mandriva2006 with LyX-1.3.3. In this cases I had a similar problem, that WAS SOLVED setting the variable KDE_LANG. So running KDE_LANG=fr_FR lyx would launch LyX with french menus, and made Aspell works correctly. (I used KDE_LANG=pt lyx) I have made some test with KDE_LANG and LANG and the results are mixed: 1) Some programs obey the KDE_LANG setting: Kde programs, as expected, plus Amarok and K3b 2) Scribus obeys the LANG setting, 3) Other programs do not obey neither the LANG nor the KDE_LANG setting: LyX, Helixplay, Inkscape, Gimp Any idea how to solve the problem, i.e. how to spell-check non-English texts within LyX? key board problems
Hi list, on my IBM Lenove T60 i'm running lyx-1.4.2 under KDE-3.5.5. LyX was generated using the gentoo lyx-1.4.2.ebuild with the flags USE="X cjk cups gnome gtk nls qt3" The system is configured such that i can produce special letters like € å ç é è ê ñ and so on. This works in most applications (e.g. thunderbird, konsole, vim) LyX does not show these special letters. I have read the Customiziation Guide and e.g. tried to bind '^' to 'accent-circumflex' as described there or to define some thing in a personal hw_cua.bind file. Unfortunately without success. So i send all information i have hoping that somebody can give me a clue. When I install LyX to my colleagues I usually use LyXWinInstaller: http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/LyXWinInstaller So far, I did not have any problems with it. I have heard some of my colleagues saying that they killed LyX when running Reconfigure and they were not able to start it again. In this case, re-installation helped them. So you can give it a try. In general, I can imagine two causes of missing classes: 1) your miktex classes are not found at all, 2) you are using a template for which you do not have the corresponding .cls style. If you do not use MikTeX for other purpose, I would suggest to let the installer install it into its default location. Then, do not go for templates but create empty new file Menu>File>New. By default it is an article, which is in every distribution, then, in Document>Settings see pop-down item "Documentclass". There, in the upper part, you will see classes that are found in MiKTeX and in the lower part those that are not found. If you want to use any of the "Unavailable" classes, you must add them to MiKTex using Miktex_update, and then run Tools>Reconfigure in LyX. Vasek -- - Ing. Contiguous definitions in AMS article
I want two successive numbered definitions (using the definition environment) in an AMS article. Lyx, however, insists on consolidating them into a single definition. If I force some standard text between the two, then everything works fine, but this is an awkward workaround. Does anyone know a btter way to do this?

Background patterns in Table cells?
Is there any way in LyX to 'color' a table cell's background with a grey pattern? I didn't find anything to this effect in the menu, documentation and wiki. Perhaps a good soul would be kind enough to indicate the appropriate LaTex command to use (if that's what's needed)? Bennett After Bennet mentioned that it works for the Dvorak keyboard layout, I tried several others and found that they work: e.g., if you want something like the US layout, you might want to switch to the British layout in the Mac's preferences - with that I have no problems entering accents and umlauts. The nice thing is that you can tell the Mac specifically to use British (e.g.) layout only in LyX, and use your standard layout (e.g., US) everywhere else. Before I became aware of this, I had defined two key map files in LyX, one of which had the accents bound to single key strokes. Then whenever I needed an accent, I switched to that second key map (with a shortcut key, of course), inserted the accented character, and switched back to the primary key map... kind of an ugly hack, so I'm glad Bennett led us to a different workaround. I'd like to try some different fonts with LyX, but if I add them to the fonts directory (from my other Windows fonts directory), LyX doesn't know they are there. The reason is that the output from LyX looks bad. I mean there is something wrong with the way the font looks in the DVI or ps file. No one concerned about typesetting a document would bother to use LyX if this problem could not be solved. Doing a search online brings-up some obscure means of converting single font files and adding something to the Latex preamble, but there has to be an easier way.

Shawn, If you must have an easier way you'll have to wait for newer versions of LyX. In the mean time, Mikex offers a good variety of fonts. Google the Latex Font Sampler. If you need to convert your own fonts, you have to do some work. For example, CTAN has a package for converting MinionPro. Walter Schmidt published foolproof packages for using commercial fonts. There are very good online guides to teach you how to convert type1 or opentype fonts. In short, us "concerned about typesetting a document" are doing very well, thank you. Perhaps the problem is not one of software, but of attitude.

Yes, there is...try to use xelatex engine instead of latex, i.e. you can
edit your document in LyX and then export to latex and run through
xelatex (until LyX provides support for XeTeX).
