I seem to remember this error from when I tried to install lyx-1.3.3/qt on my machinge (Suse 8.0). I solved it by installing the bluesky fonts in /usr/share/texmf/fonts/type1. Though it took me quite some time before I found what was going wrong Make sure to run texhash after installing any fonts. Hope that helps. Jeannette

Alains problem was, that he insert the image into the caption, which causes an error. It is a bit difficult to insert a float in the right way. With Insert->Float LyX is by default in the "caption mode", where you should not insert the image or tabular. Insert the caption, hit enter and then the image/table. If you want the image/tabular before the caption, then put the cursor in front of the caption and then enter. Herbert

Layout->Document->Document class->memoir?
From LaTeXConfig.lyx 4.25 llncs Found: no CTAN: N/A Notes: The document class llncs can be used to write articles for submission to the Springer journal Lecture Notes in Computer Science . LATEX documents are available from Springer s ftp site on the following URL: ftp://trick.ntp.springer.de/pub/tex/latex/llncs/latex2e. The LYX layout file for this document class is still insufficiently tested. 4.26 memoir Found: no CTAN: macros/latex/contrib/supported/memoir/ Notes: Memoir is a flexible class for typesetting general fiction, non-fiction and mathematical works as books, reports, articles or manuscripts. Documents can use 9, 10, 11, 12, 14 or 17pt as the normal font size. Many methods are provided to let you create your own particular design. This is just a snippet of the file generated after configuring and compiling source. My question is simple: Is this to be expected that under lyx1.3.3/lib/layout/ several of the .layout files will not be found during configure? -Sincerely, Marc J. Driftmeyer P.S. I chose memoir because I want to use it and upon not finding it and reading the LaTeXConfig.lyx I saw several missing.

Nirmal Govind wrote: > Juergen, did you mean better quality in printed output or on-screen > using Acro reader?? The glyphs are better. ae is, as far as I understand it, a kind of a "patchwork". It uses some type1 glyphs (from different sources) but also bitmap fonts, if type1 glyphs are not available. cm-super and latin modern have been designed as "consistent" font family, the glyphs really match together, thus the better (typographic) quality. Latin modern has (apparently) even been approved by Don Knuth and Hermann Zapf. > I installed both latin modern and cm-super. Here's what I see: > > 1. No idea. For me, they look o.k. (but the decision between lmodern and cm-super is also a matter of taste). I like lmodern, because the package is much smaller and it is easy to install. But as I said, it is still in beta state and thus, there are still some minor glitches. cm-super is huge, but has more glyphs for non-latin languages. Also I think that a pdf can be searched in acroread only with lmodern. Jürgen.

Thanks to all of you for being helpful. I'll be back, for sure... As for considfering installing 1.3.3, I'll do it as soon as I'll have switch from Debian Woody to Mandrake 9.2 (I use my computer more and more as a workstation, producing text (as support to the courses I give), short source code (exercises or examples for my students) in C, Python, Ocaml.. and compiling it, getting docs and papers on the internet and I feel less and less fond of administration, having prcticed for 15 years.. ). Also, I quite often need the very last version of the software I use (cf LyX), which can be a problem with Debian. In short I like Debian a lot but think it's no more adapted to my needs... -- Alain DIDIERJEAN Ces mystÃres nous dÃpassent... ...feignons d'en Ãtre l'organisateur J C
Graphs in LyX
Hi all, After looking at LyX a while ago, I've come back and am impressed with the progress. LyX on Mac OS X is just gorgeous. Anyway, I teach high school math, and would love to use LyX to typeset tests and such. I realize there will be some problems (I need to leave lots of blank spaces for students to work out the answers, for example), but I'm guessing a judicious use of vertical space will fix those. The one thing I'm not sure how to deal with is graphs. Often I need to print the graph of a function and have students identify which function it represents or provide a blank graph on which students graph a function I provide. In LaTeX I've been using mfpic because it seems an easy way to create PDF compatible files and had commands like \function{-8}{8}{.1}{x**2} which would draw x^2 on a coordinate plane from x=-8 to x=8 graphing a new point every .1. So, I have two questions: 1) Should I be using something else? Remember I'll mostly be drawing simple coordinate axes with graphs of functions on them. 2) If mfpic is the way to go, can I automate the pdflatex; mpost; pdflatex cycle in LyX so that when I click View all my graphs get inserted correctly? TIA, Todd

Todd, Have you tried using Grace? Lyx accepts Grace files as figures, and it's pretty good at producing any kind of graph.
