Other in Menu

2015-05-11 Thread Eric Bradshaw
I've noticed in both a fresh 15.04 install and an upgrade from 14.10 that XTerm
and UXTerm have been placed in a menu category I haven't seen before called
"Other." I've easily moved these by changing their shortcuts, but my own custom
menu category/ies no longer appear - they are now lumped into "Other" as well
and I've not yet been able to figure out how to correct this. Anyone know what
changed?

Nothing that I know of. This menu category as always been part of lubuntu.
Good thing you were a Le to customize it.

Re: Lubuntu 14 && U-MATE 15 installer issues [PPC]

2015-05-11 Thread Fritz Hudnut
Folks:

Just a little follow-up on the installer issue(s) . . . tried to watch the
recent Hangouts on the installer on the world Ubuntu meeting, but didn't
seem to be on point and at that time I hadn't tried to run an install.
Over the weekend I tried to install two flavors from desktop image burned
to DVD on my iBook G4 . . . first it was Lubuntu 14.04 LTS that I had
burned and I believe I installed and from memory downloaded in February.

I followed my usual style of selecting "something else" from the choice as
I run a dual boot, set up a 10 MB "new world boot" partition, 12 GB
formatted "ext4" . . . and 2x RAM at 1380MB for swap . . . ran through the
usual ID & password stuff . . . and the installer opened and started with
"saving files xxx" . . . . 15 minutes later it was "still doing that"
which ordinarily the install should be finishing or almost. Checked
GParted, boot partition showed 9MB installed, and ext4 showed 322MB . . .
  Deleted the partitions and tried again . . . same thing . . . . So I
assumed that somehow the Lubuntu installer issues that have been discussed
here had "migrated" into my burned DVD by magic . . . so I went on to try
for a Ubuntu-MATE 15 iso . . . many downloads later I had a correct
checksum number and burned it to DVD.

The next day, yesterday I went for the install, this time I noticed that
when I set up the Newworld boot it was flagged as "/" . . . and I also
flagged the ext4 partition as "/" as I usual do for prior successful
installs . . . running the install brought the same "saving copies" . . .
with the same 9MB in newworld and 322MB showing as "used" . . . sensing a
pattern I tried to delete the newworld partition, but, it would not run w/o
it. Then I tried to remove the "/" from the neworld, also not accepted . .
. same thing when I tried to remove the "/" from the ext 4 partition.

So, I gave up on trying to use "something else" and I deleted all the
partitions to "free space" and ran it as "install alongside OSX" . . . and
it went through, Yaboot was installed . . . . However, on reboot it went
to a black screen, my radeon boot params were not carried over to the
install . . . so I tried to set up an Xorg.conf and at same time add the
boot params to the Yaboot.conf file . . . and botched the deal by
forgetting (I believe) to run "sudo ybin" . . . and on reboot it went to
the verbose log . . . ending with "p link is down" and it froze there.

I tried to boot a Super Grub2 CD but Yaboot would not boot it . . . so,
problems with install, work around that "fixed it," and then I screwed it
up . . . seems par for the course for the iBook lately . . . .

Clearly there are "issues" with the "something else" way of installing with
possibly the double flag for "/" being involved? If there is a bug report
for this issue, happy to add my name to it. Might have time in a few days
to try to run the installer over my install and see if it "dpkg" the
problem . . . ah, I also tried to get to a TTY after my Xorg & Yaboot conf
fiasco . . . no dice would not open a TTY shell . . . .

Fritz:

I always use the "Something Else" (manual partitioning) option, and it

The thing I see in your e-mail snippet above that makes me wonder, is
your "new world boot" partition.

One of the partitions that Linux looks-for, and creates if necessary, is:

/boot

Your "new world boot" partition would not be recognized as "/boot", so
presumably it would create its own "/boot" partition under "/". But
perhaps there are other things you did in the manual partitioning (such
as where GRUB is installed) that could cause a conflict.

I recall that in installing Linux alongside Mac OS X (using manual
partitioning), I needed to create a small partition (of a name the
installer suggested) into-which the boot-loader (GRUB) is installed.

If you need to control what is in the /boot partition, then it is
probably best to create the /boot partition before installing, and
indicate for the install to use it.

I suspect that it must be named "/boot". Keep in mind that there is no
communication between the installer and the myriads of other system
components. Such components probably simply look for a partition named
"/boot".

Recent stability issues with *buntu 14.04?

2015-05-11 Thread John Hupp
A Lubuntu 14.04 i386 machine that also runs an LTSP server has locked up
hard 3 times since 5/7. I took note in the latest lockup that I was
logged in and just running the file manager, and that one thin client
was logged in but not doing anything.

Not even the magic syskeys would get me out gracefully, so I had to do a
hard shutdown in all 3 cases.

The last syslog entry was 15 minutes prior to the lockup, so no clues there.

Has anyone else with a similar configuration noticed any stability
issues recently?

Aere:

Thanks for the thoughts . . . I for the most part have mostly used
"something else" with manual partition, on Intel MBPro . . . the "boot
loader" partition is "bios_grub" and grub is installed there. Without that
partition it says "successful install" . . . but system will not boot into
linux.

But, PPC is a tad different in that it uses Yaboot . . . and I usually am
short on time so I haven't looked into the PowerPCFAQ author's suggestion
to try GRUB . . . and, with some installs if I try to use "automatic" it
won't install Yaboot . . . so I also lately have been using "manual" and in
this case I've done it a number of times, previously no problems with the
install selecting "new world boot" as the label for Yaboot, and ext4
flagged as "/" . . . and on some forum it may have been said that "Yaboot
might not install into the partition, but it looks for it" . . . .

But, mainly posting here because there was some discussion about "installer
issues with desktop iso"??? My last install on the iBook was not that long
ago and I used the mini installer and blithely selected "GNOME DE" from the
drop down menu, not knowing that GNOME required 1GHz processor . . . other
than that the install went well . . . using my same "manual" partition
scheme that I used in the last two attempts. So something seems to have
changed, I don't recall seeing the "/" label on the New World Boot
partition the last time, and I was/am thinking that the dual "/" caused
"internal conflict" in the installer's "mind" . . . but, neither one of
them could be adjusted or changed . . . . I'm assuming that from what you
are saying that "/boot" label would go on Yaboot/grub partition??? But,
there was no choice provided for any label there, only in the "ext4"
partition could options for "/home" or something like that be made in a
drop down menu . . . but ***historically*** I always picked "/" for the
"ext4" . . . and it all "went well."

2015-05-11 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Classic tl;dr. Someone fill me in if you need my help. Did want to point
out that the issues with the installer really had nothing to do with this
situation, but was more about planning for things like Snappy. My idea
about getting a text mode for ubiquity so that we could get rid of the
alternate installer was also discussed, but neither are relevant.

Hello Fritz,
you can start open firmware and start yaboot from that small disk formated by
UFS which is called new world boot.

Alternatively you can insert LiveCD for PowerPC and startup that computer to
boot from cdrom. There shall be enough to press/hold key "c" to tell OFI to
boot from cdrom. Rest can be done using chroot.

Re: Lubuntu 14 && U-MATE 15 installer issues [PPC]

2015-05-11 Thread Fritz Hudnut
@wxl:

Thanks for the reply . . . indeed, the discussion I saw, couple talking
heads . . . has nothing to do with this problem . . . but then I didn't
hear them say "Snappy" either . . . but I only gave them about 5 minutes to
access the focus of their effort.

@Peter:

Thanks also for your thoughts . . . however, past efforts to "boot open
firmware" to try to boot a USB flash edition based upon the PowerPCFAQ
instructions were ***not successful for my '04 era iBook G4 . . . well,
I was able to boot into open firmware . . . but none of the supplied
options on the FAQ did anything . . . and that included something like
"//yaboot" that was trying to boot the yaboot file in the USB flash . .
. . Point being, that I would need detailed directions on how to try that
. . . and possibly that machine would not comply.

In terms of the "boot with c key" to boot the cdrom, right, that should
have worked, but didn't . . . it went to the Yaboot window, and then
selecting "c" for cdrom . . . brought some error . . . might have then been
able to hit "return" and then tried "L" . . . leading to the frozen
dmesg??? list, OR I can reboot into OSX . . . .

My thought is to again try to boot the linux install disk and try to run
the install again and see if it "recognizes" anything as "installed" . . .
and then tries to repair . . . . To the best of my knowledge Yaboot
doesn't have a "recovery" mode like GRUB does . . . . Or . . . if that
fails . . . "nuke and pave" . . . once again.

One way or another, it isn't per se the install that is the issue, I got
the system installed . . . and could probably do it again. It's just the
fact that using my usual "manual" partition method did not work . . . and
possibly this may relate to some of these recent "installer" issues

Hi John,

I would suspect hardware problems.

Best regards
Nio

A worthy thought. Unless I hear from others about such a pattern,
that will become my working theory.

Have you update to the latest kernel? The previous one had a
"regression" because of a security fix:

Andreas

Thanks to all for the several replies, and to Andreas for the
particulars. However, I find that I have the patched kernel installed
and also included in the terminal server image.

So unless there is still an unpatched kernel issue, or an unidentified
software problem, I may have to fall back to the idea that it is a
hardware issue.

John:

I had a case where I was experimenting with the first steps of putting
an application menu-entry on the desktop, but never did the final steps
to create the desktop icon, that hung my Lubuntu 14.04 i386 system, and
I think it was in pcmanfm last, in causing the hang.

The system hung that way was not using CPU or memory - it just wouldn't
do any further work, or sign-out or terminate.

Re: Lubuntu 14 && U-MATE 15 installer issues [PPC]

I always use the "Something Else" (manual partitioning) option,
and it has (so far) always worked for me.

The thing I see in your e-mail snippet above that makes me wonder,
is your "new world boot" partition.

One of the partitions that Linux looks-for, and creates if
necessary, is:

/boot

Your "new world boot" partition would not be recognized as
"/boot", so presumably it would create its own "/boot" partition
under "/". But perhaps there are other things you did in the
manual partitioning (such as where GRUB is installed) that could
cause a conflict.

I recall that in installing Linux alongside Mac OS X (using manual
partitioning), I needed to create a small partition (of a name the
installer suggested) into-which the boot-loader (GRUB) is installed.

Aere:

Thanks for the thoughts . . . I for the most part have mostly used
"something else" with manual partition, on Intel MBPro . . . the "boot
loader" partition is "bios_grub" and grub is installed there. Without
that partition it says "successful install" . . . but system will not
boot into linux.

But, PPC is a tad different in that it uses Yaboot . . . and I usually
am short on time so I haven't looked into the PowerPCFAQ author's
suggestion to try GRUB . . . and, with some installs if I try to use
"automatic" it won't install Yaboot . . . so I also lately have been
using "manual" and in this case I've done it a number of times,
previously no problems with the install selecting "new world boot" as
the label for Yaboot, and ext4 flagged as "/" . . . and on some forum
it may have been said that "Yaboot might not install into the
partition, but it looks for it" . . . .

But, mainly posting here because there was some discussion about
"installer issues with desktop iso"??? My last install on the iBook
was not that long ago and I used the mini installer and blithely
selected "GNOME DE" from the drop down menu, not knowing that GNOME
required 1GHz processor . . . other than that the install went well .
. . using my same "manual" partition scheme that I used in the last
two attempts. So something seems to have changed, I don't recall
seeing the "/" label on the New World Boot partition the last time,
and I was/am thinking that the dual "/" caused "internal conflict" in
the installer's "mind" . . . but, neither one of them could be
adjusted or changed . . . . I'm assuming that from what you are saying
that "/boot" label would go on Yaboot/grub partition??? But, there
was no choice provided for any label there, only in the "ext4"
partition could options for "/home" or something like that be made in
a drop down menu . . . but ***historically*** I always picked "/" for
the "ext4" . . . and it all "went well."

F

Fritz:

In my e-mail to you that you responded-to, I was confusing the partition
name with the mount-point. If the installer doesn't give you the choice
of the mount-point you need, you can type it into the combo-box.

I have not tried installing Linux along-side a PPC Mac. My two Mac
machines are Mac OS X 10.6.8 (32-bit), and Mac OS X 10.8.6 (64-bit). I
use rEFIt for my initial menu of which system to boot. Both are MacBooks.

Re: Other in Menu

2015-05-11 Thread Israel
Hi Eric,
(you may have found a bug)

You could edit the menu file, though I am not sure what this would do...

(we already know the prefix, but just for posterity)
find what menu prefix is being used.
i.e.
echo $XDG_MENU_PREFIX
lxde-

You can find the menus in
/etc/xdg/menus
such as
lxde-applications.menu

Here is the OTHER portion

Other
lxde-other.directory

Core
Settings
Screensaver

It seems that there is some sort of issue

(from xterm.desktop)
Categories=System;TerminalEmulator;Utility;

So, it should end up in System or Accessories (utility), as only the
Additional Categories:
http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/menu-spec-latest.html#additional-category-registry
and reserved categories should end up in Other
TerminalEmulator is an additional category, but System and Utility are
standard

I wonder what other applications end up there?
