I'm using an SVG file as icon on my "Lubuntu Start" button. Something good
about SVG is that you probably won't need to worry about size, since it's

[DistroWatch] Finding drop-in replacements for unsupported operating systems

2013-12-18 Thread Ali Linx (amjjawad)
Hi,

http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20131216#qa

I am surprised that Lubuntu is NOT mentioned as one of the options, nor
StartUbuntu but at least Kubuntu is mentioned, even though I doubt Kubuntu
can play a role on this but still part of the family :)

Odd enough they mentioned systems that based or forked from other
well-known systems!

Yeah I really like SVG graphics I looked into the Lubuntu icons
folder and saw that they are all svg files, so apparently LXDE does
indeed support svg. SVG has a lot of other great uses, like the web,
and integrating JavaScript directly into the SVG. If you like SVG art,
you should check out OpenClipArt.org
It might be worth submitting the icon set (once it is finished) to Open
Clip Art as long as it can be released as public domain.
I also might submit a Template, though I think it would be more
appropriate if Rafael submitted it, since he is the resident artist :)

Hi, are you reinstalling on an old machine, where you have kept the
/home as a separate partition? What version are you running (i.e. the
current 13.10)
Are you saying that you get stuck in the installer (ubiquity)? Or you
get stuck in the Login Screen? If you get really stuck on the login
screen, does the computer lock up, or can you still interact, and drop
to a tty (Ctrl+Alt+F1)... if you are unfamiliar a tty is the terminal
screen, which will prompt you to log in to your user account, and enter
a password. This way you can fix the issue, from within the terminal.

Re: Need to go past the login details of Lubuntu

2013-12-18 Thread Jordan

Hi Harry,

One problem might be with the video driver on a specific machine. When
you get to a terminal screen (either ctrl+alt+f1 or through grub at
bootup), type

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade dist-upgrade

Let upgrade/dist-upgrade supply the packages that are missing. It's
highly likely (but not certain) that the driver will be in the
repositories and supplied during this process. When you reboot after
downloading the missing packages, see if you get the login box.

If you don't see an improvement, there's usually a way to supply a
(non-free) driver manually through a thumb drive. Go to the video card
manufacturer website, find the driver, dl it onto the thumb drive and
mount the thumb drive into the linux machine. Move the file to a hard
drive and then execute it. This is a pain, but sometimes the only
solution.

Hello to all,
Quidsup on Youtube is a regular distro reviewer and fairly well known.
His "best of 2013" is linked below. He gives Lubuntu 13.10 a respectable
third place finish( out of forty-two reviewed distros in 2013). It's worth
the four mins. to watch.

Java (a different language from JavaScript) cannot directly support

I didn't know that about Java, that seems really unfortunate as SVG's
are great (they are vector based so the do not become pixelated). I am
not sure exactly what you are saying by your e-mail, though... Are you
saying the box icon theme should also have png files, or are you saying
that for web use it is not possible to use it with Java. I don't use
Java (yet), I use JavaScript, which can be coded directly into SVG
files, and can be used to manipulate the SVG, and whatever else... I
have only experimented a little with the capabilities, but since SVG is
in XML format, all JavaScript should theoretically be possible (even
calling an external script), though I have not tried this yet, though
maybe others on this list have and know whether it is possible or not.

Israel:

I was merely pointing out something surprising that I learned.

In attempting to display icons in a Java Swing application of installed
components, though most of the component had '.png' icons, some of them
had '.svg' icons. The '.svg' icons could not be displayed by the
application, but the '.png' icons were displayed properly. Fortunately,
most of the icons were '.png'.

In spite of the virtues of '.svg' icons you were pointing out, like with
so many things, there is a down-side, and the down-side here is
something few of you would likely be aware of.

Ok, thanks for the insight. I have yet to get in to Java, though once I
am fully comfortable and familiar with the languages I am currently
pursuing, I may move to using Java a bit too... it seems much of the
syntax is very similar to C++ (and JavaScript), though each language has
its quirks. I will try to remember that about svg. It seems strange
that Java can't support svg. There might be some sort of library for
supporting svg, because Android uses Java, and it seems like there must
be support for it, as some apps can create (and display) svg on
android... but maybe Android allows apps to be programmed in many
languages, and those apps are not Java.
Anyway, thank you very much for sharing your experience and wisdom, it
is much needed, and not just for me, I know many others benefit from
your input here!!
