Well, I take that back. The issue is not yet solved :/
More headache, the machine is HOT and I can't even touch the heat-sinks. I
opened the case so that it became cooler a bit.

That heat might not be result of the software... I guess you should
activate the temperature monitor, there is a mini-app to add on LXpanel.

Even though, heat-sink hot is not normal, specially if the CPU use is on
100% for a long period... Check if your cooler is running good, and watch
for the CPU temperature to be sure if the temperature is over the normal
threshold!

Search an hd video and you will see how worse things are with a P4. :(

The heat issue is definitely because of the video issue. Why? simply,
because my CPU is minimum on 80% when playing videos (browser based) and
when it is idle, it is not more than 5%. I guess I sent the youtube link
earlier that shows that.

I did not monitor the temp, I tried to touch the heat-sink and it was SO
HOT that I had to remove my finger immediately. I touched the case from the
outside and felt the heat, that is why I opened the cover.

Fan is working perfectly.

The case itself is not closed, it has so many empty slots where the air can
get inside - I know that is not enough sometimes but hey, I'm just watching
videos, I am not creating one :D

I seriously have no idea what is going on? maybe with all my previous
tests, I have never tested the video on that machine. I was testing other
stuff on that machine.

On my other ASUS Laptop with Intel Built-in Card, I don't have this issue.
Only rarely when there is some tearing or sluggish playing. But rarely or
very few times.

I might install other system to check on my PC.

By the way, even when I opened the cover and even when everything cooled
down a bit, while watching, CPU was minimum at 80%.

Nuh, I will never do this. Lubuntu should handle this really well. I have

Off-Topic, Amigo but I will help you with an advice that you will thank me
for :P
Please, do not install that on your system. Saucy is still on the early
stage. There is a chance something unexpected might happen. So, better safe
than sorry. Having that said:

1- Either play with Saucy on USB - here is how to install on USB without
affecting your system: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1872303 -
yes, that is my guide :D

2- Play with it on Oracle Virtual Machine - https://www.virtualbox.org/

When 13.10 will be released as a stable version, then, go ahead and install
it on your machine :D
Now, better to play it safe ;)

Have you tried playing you Tube with HTML5 ? The opt-in area is at
http://www.youtube.com/html5 (I use it on my Chromium install to save my
CPU's going into overdrive).
HTML5 WILL replace flash so get on board and give it a try.

No, simply because the thing I was watching is not on YouTube. Don't be

Virtual Box?!!! A system that needs restricted extras to support USB? You
HAVE to be joking!

KVM in in built to the linux kernel, using restricted extras (extensions
pack) from Oracle can cause a complete failure to boot if not configured up
correctly (and it is not only NOT F/OSS, it needs manually adding to each
virtual machine you create).

Head over to the tutorial / classroom sessions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/Activities/Classroom/Saucy to learn more
(and about the REALLY annoying bug in KVM).

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] Video Problems - Saucy

2013-07-11 Thread Phill Whiteside
Hi Ali,

then my advice is to nag them to become html5 compliant. The browsers now
are, do not forget apple seem to sell lots of computers and they have
always refused to support flash :) I do not see a good reason for linux to
flog itself to death in such a situation, just as I do not feel they should
spend time trying to emulate silverlight / moonlight systems.

Frustrating this may seem, but as sites realise that they are losing an
ever growing percentage of people who cannot / will not tie them selves to
such propriatory systems, things will change. That there are linux releases
for video cards was some what unheard of a few years ago.

Regards,

Phill.

I was not using VM and I don't use KVM.

Copy of my email was:

Hi,

Problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blgJ-v2IkVI
Idle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Wmaxoo6Cpg

I have no idea if you can tell from the video or not? I guess it is clear.

I'm having hard time watching anything on that machine:
http://phillw.net/hardware/BnA9pw11

Any one else having the same problem? I'm not sure who has the same machine
that I do or even similar?

Any way to make this better and faster? I'm using that machine at the
moment as a video player and I'm connecting it to my 32" LCD.

Thanks!

Then why all those Linux Users failed to convince Adobe to have a Linux
Version for Photoshop, for example?!

You know as I know when a new user to Linux will come across this issue,
he/she will simply switch back to Windows and/or reboot and login to
Windows (in case of Dual/Multi-Booting).

If we want to spread Linux, we should be ready for everything :D
IMHO, of course!

I'm unsure whether the issue I am having is because a driver? CPU is too
old and can not handle these kind of videos? the system on such machine?
etc? no idea :/

Note:
As I mentioned earlier, I have not yet tried to watch a Local Video as in
Local File on that machine (http://phillw.net/hardware/BnA9pw11).

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] Video Problems - Saucy

2013-07-11 Thread Andre Rodovalho
Ali, why don't you monitor the temperature to be sure the core temperature
is anormal?

I didn't understand this:
By the way, even when I opened the cover and even when everything cooled
down a bit, while watching, CPU was minimum at 80%.

This is exatcly the reason for the processor to be hot, is over a big
load...

Another thing, it might me good to check temperature on BIOS, to check, if
available!

Anyway, I guess an video overload on your system intends to heat your
chiptset, not your CPU... The problem is, this very compacted videos
require too much processing, for decoding, it's the oposite work of
decoding, less effort, but for those new tecnology, that might be enough to
make your CPU quite busy...

Different chipsets can handle differently video information, your netbook
might be newer, and better prepared for those video compression
technology...

Yes, nice catch Sensei but ... two things that made me think I was reading
the wrong reply

1- Subject of the email did not changed
2- The reply was on the top, not underneath my email.

I am doing my best to follow this:
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community/mailing-lists

But never mind :)
After all, you are the Team Leader of Lubuntu QA so you can advise the user
to do what it is right for them ;)

Ali, I was checking this:
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/tech-specs.html

And, you don't have the minimal requirements to play with flash... (512MB
of RAM; 128MB of graphics memory)

Did you tried the the free flash plugin? You might want to try and check if
you have better results...

You might want to install:

1- browser-plugin-lightspark
or
2- browser-plugin-gnash
and...

You might also want to try this with Chromium, it manages the video content
differently...

All the monitors [1] says: 40 C while on BIOS, it says 68 C - 70 C

CPU Usage is high while watching the video.

But Federico mentioned that the videos I'm watching are not HD?!

My ASUS F3F Laptop has 512MB RAM and Intel Core Due at 1.86GHz.

But as far as I know/remember, the free version never played anything in my
case. I always had to install Flash via the restricted-extras.

By the way, this is my machine from inside:

There is another heat-sink but it is behind the cables so you can't see it
clearly.

RAM, two heat-sinks were so hot.

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] Video Problems - Saucy

2013-07-11 Thread Phill Whiteside
Hi,

I have one of these... http://phillw.net/hardware/aDU4RVzY A Win7 machine
with a decent graphic card and 4 GB of RAM. When ever I play flash movies
in a browser, the CPU usage goes from a quiet

Tasks: 176 total, 1 running, 174 sleeping, 0 stopped, 1 zombie
%Cpu(s): 9.5 us, 4.2 sy, 0.0 ni, 83.8 id, 2.5 wa, 0.0 hi, 0.0 si,
 0.0 st
KiB Mem: 3787680 total, 3233020 used, 554660 free, 173552 buffers
KiB Swap: 1010 total,30136 used, 10136524 free, 928556 cached

To...:

Tasks: 178 total, 3 running, 174 sleeping, 0 stopped, 1 zombie
%Cpu(s): 43.8 us, 27.6 sy, 0.0 ni, 26.9 id, 1.2 wa, 0.5 hi, 0.0 si,
 0.0 st
KiB Mem: 3787680 total, 3332436 used, 455244 free, 174216 buffers
KiB Swap: 1010 total,30136 used, 10136524 free, 937980 cached

Playing Video via a browser is 'expensive'... now let me try it with the
downloaded version of same video.. :

Tasks: 181 total, 1 running, 179 sleeping, 0 stopped, 1 zombie
%Cpu(s): 16.9 us, 3.7 sy, 0.0 ni, 76.1 id, 3.2 wa, 0.2 hi, 0.0 si,
 0.0 st
KiB Mem: 3787680 total, 3340228 used, 447452 free, 175168 buffers
KiB Swap: 1010 total,30136 used, 10136524 free, 986256 cached

Now, this time the machine is playing the flash video in VLC (That is a new
programme started). So, browsers do not like playing flash movies which
oddly enough is not that suprising as they are browsers and not media
players like VLC is). The sooner we are rid of flash, the better.

Ali, if you want, I'll do a compare of html5 vs flash on you-tube to also
show you the difference in CPU time.

Regards,

Phill.

not, please let me know the bug number(s) of the new things that are
