Re: [Lubuntu-qa] HOWTO Create LiveUSB using "dd"

2013-04-08 Thread Ali Linx (amjjawad)
Hello Jonathan,

What I do love about your emails that you explain in details, deep specific
details and I just like that :D thanks for replying :)

Indeed, I have tried many ways. I was in love with the MultiBootUSB
approach where I can put so many ISOs on my 8GB USB which I'm using beside
my other 4GB USB and another 1GB USB stick. I have 3 :)
And yes, these are not costly anymore.

As explained in my previous email, I had a problem with testing
raring-desktop-i386 [1] and after so many tries, finally it is working :D

I couldn't agree more, the 'dd' approach is easy but if you have 4GB USB
and more, the rest is waste. MultiBootUSB approach helped me a lot with the
stable versions of Lubuntu but with the Beta versions, it failed.

Maybe I should have written more about the advantages and disadvantages but
it is also good sometimes when you teach someone how to do fishing rather
than feeding him/her :P but I will remember that next time. I didn't have
time to explain in details.
Wait, that is why your emails are needed and much appreciated :D
We are a team, right? so I like the idea of one of us complete the other ;)

Thank you!

[Lubuntu-qa] Lubuntu installation test

2013-04-08 Thread Nio Wiklund
Hello everybody :-)

This is a short report of a Lubuntu installation from the desktop iso
file (32-bit daily).

The target machine was delivered in April 2008 by a small vendor of
computers with Ubuntu preinstalled. It came with Ubuntu 7.10, but I soon
upgraded to 8.04 LTS. See this link.

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M2NVM_DVI/

During the installation I checked the RAM usage every 5 seconds, and
found that it maxed at 411MB when the language packs were installed and
a little bit later. The RAM usage was above 384MB for quite a while. See
the attached gnumeric file. The logger was the attached one-liner. The
live session found a swap file, and the swappiness is default, so it
swapped around 20 MB (maximum 22) although the installed RAM is 2 GB.

The installed size on the HDD is only around 2GB.

The multimedia performance is great considering it's an on-board nvidia
chip from 2008 and the built-in nouveau driver and also compared to
10.04 LTS and 12.04 LTS. I did not bother to install the proprietary
driver for this test.

I found only the few known bugs. Otherwise the installed system
performed well :-)

Best regards
Nio

I remembered this being mentioned so I cross-tested todays Ubuntu image:

I also need to follow up on what happens after installation;

Are we getting the message to reboot after we install?

I don't think we are, but I really can't be sure until this upstream bug is
fixed:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1080701

That has been a huge problem since mid-November!

Thank goodness we kept the alternate alive!

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] Check disc for defects bug needs confirmation

2013-04-08 Thread Phill Whiteside
Hi Lance,

as I've previously mentioned, this is something that needs fixing at kernel
level. As the reason ppc iso is over sized is due to having lots of kernels
in it, I had entered early discussions so that lubuntu-ppc-desktop (and
alternate) only ship with the kernel(s) needed for the various desktops we
support. It is very unlikely that this will be resolved before 13.04 lands
(we've passed too many freezes and it is not a minor undertaking --
although it has not been ruled out for 13.10). when this is done, we may
even find out which kernel(s) to alter for which chipset!

Regards,

Phill.

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] Check disc for defects bug needs confirmation

2013-04-08 Thread Lance
Errm, this is why I cross-tested with todays Ubuntu image ;^)

I think you're wrong this time. If it's purely a kernel bug then even Ubuntu
GNOME would be effected . I'm fairly sure that it's a casper bug.

Whenever possible I try to test any "buggish" behavior in our flavor against
Ubuntu itself to see if it still exists "upstream".

In this case the behavior is the same in Ubuntu as it it here, so I reported a
bug :^)

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] Check disc for defects bug needs confirmation

2013-04-08 Thread Ali Linx (amjjawad)
I'm the one who should thank you :D
I should have reported that myself too Launchpad because I was so loud
about it but since we are one team, I don't think it does matter who report
it first, right? :P :D

Thank you and hope that will be fixed.

It is really really good that we still have the alternate image :D

[Lubuntu-qa] Non-Official-Apps

2013-04-08 Thread Ali Linx (amjjawad)
Hi,

I was so excited to have both the alternate and the desktop versions
installed successfully on my test machine after a hard time with the
desktop image which didn't want to work after installation, now it does.

Anyway, I've been playing with these apps recently:

https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-dev/+archive/non-official-apps?field.series_filter=raring

I just have a silly Q here.

Do I need to carry on now? I don't think these will be included with 13.04
but can we even recommend that to other users?

So far, 13.04 beta2 is doing well. Did not do heavy tests yet but even
Chromium crashes are less.

I'm starting to like the idea of "xombrero" - was watching youtube video
this morning and it was using around 160MB or Physical RAM (AKA Resident
RAM) if I remember correctly.

I also played with "compton" and it is nice to have that specially for
users who keep complaining about the lack of tweaks/effects on Lubuntu.

As for the image view, I'm so disappointed as it has no "crop" tool :(
I do need that a lot on daily basis and shotwell has a lot of dependencies.

"lubuntu-tweak" did not work for me at all. Nothing happened when I tried
to put the File Manager and the Trash on the desktop.

As for the menu editor, I saw it but didn't play with it yet. It looks
promising. Not even sure if I personally need such thing with Lubuntu but
perhaps it will be useful for others.

I will do heavier tests for these apps but do you guys recommend to do this
now? or after the release? in fact, I'm just thinking this is a good chance
to test how stable 13.04 beta 2 is :)

Hmm, I think I will install Firefox and test the 3 browsers :)

But overall, it is really really really nice to have all these apps in one
PPA :D

Thank you!

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] Lubuntu 13.04 PPC Testing - Now Clarify Netboot Testing

2013-04-08 Thread Phill Whiteside
hi good people,

I've not ignored this thread, quite the opposite. I've been chatting to
Nicholas and discussed several options to 'clean up' the mini-iso / network
boot test case area. He's pretty happy with my proposal which is we run
only one test case [1] as mandatory with the others as optional; but I need
to double check this with the -release team as we are moving test cases
around pretty late in the cycle.

Regards,

Phill.

FAMILY can mean Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, etc. It's generically
written.

this is part of the install process.

besides theabove, what else is missing?

well, 6 apr != today, does it, now? :) as it turns out yesterday is under
daily, as is today (by both date and "current") but not two days ago. user a
newer version and your problem will be solved.
