[Lubuntu-qa] HOWTO Create LiveUSB using "dd"

2013-04-06 Thread Ali Linx (amjjawad)
Hi,

After long time for me using UNetbootin and Multiboot USB Creators, etc. I
feel now so bad that I haven't used this method before. Could it be even
easier than this?

Seriously, simplicity is the ultimate sophistication :D

I'm sorry if this is a very old tip or information but I guess at least,
there is someone who doesn't know that, hence I'm sharing it.

*HOWTO Create LiveUSB using "dd":**
*
*sudo dd if=/path-to-the-iso-file/filename.iso of=/dev/sdX

Where X is your USB Drive*

End of Story

Thank you!

P.S.
I had to use this method after all the other method failed to create a
bootable USB for raring-alternate-i386.iso and this one has worked.

Hope I'll be able to finish the installation which is in progress now ...

When a spin fails one test, sometimes that means the other tests aren't
worth trying. Those then often get left blank. From the numbers in the
report above, it looks like we should fill in values for those tests
even if it's to mark the test as a fail because that will give Lubuntu
better figures for completeness in testing.

Hi Ali and everybody else,

dd is nick-named 'disk destroyer'. I made a simple script to reduce the
risk, when using this method. You are welcome to use it :-)

[Lubuntu-qa] Fwd: Help - Beta2 installation Failed

2013-04-06 Thread Ali Linx (amjjawad)
Hi,

I didn't get an reply from you guys for two days now :D I hope everyone is
busy with testing ;)

Ok, thanks to Phill who advised to go for the alternate image instead of
the desktop one (i386 for both) and indeed, the alternate image
installation is DONE successfully from the first time :D

I will try one LAST time to install from the desktop image and will use the
same method to create the liveUSB, that is "dd" method. If it will fail yet
again, I think someone needs to have a serious look at the desktop image.

Will keep you posted ;)

Hi,

I have written everything on my blog with screenshots so there you go:

http://amjjawad.blogspot.com/2013/04/testing-lubuntu-1304-report-1.html

I hate the same issue previously with the daily image of 18-3-2013 but that
was on Beta1 stage. We are now on Beta2 :(

Lance gave me this link previously:

http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/ubuntu-initrd-bug.html

That didn't help previously to fix the issue.

I'm OUT of idea because this is the first time I have a failure
installation :(

Thank you!

P.S.
Yes, this is a very fresh new installation.

Also note: Lubuntu 12.10 is installed on that very machine and it is my
main OS.

You are doing great work guys. However I am not sure about that 9

Otherwise, I would help myself too.

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] HOWTO Create LiveUSB using "dd"

2013-04-06 Thread Aere Greenway

Amjjawad:

When you use the package "usb-creator-gtk", it creates for you a file
system (called a "persistence file") where changes you make (including
packages you download) remain on the USB drive, so next time you boot
it, you still have those new packages, along with any configuration you
did for them.

Using that, I can install all the MIDI music packages I need (and
configure them), and I end up with a working MIDI music Linux system,
whose drawback is that it takes longer to boot than it normally would.
The other drawback of doing this, is that if you download updates, any
kernel updates will not update the kernel actually used.

I wonder if you use the method you described in your e-mail, that there
is no persistence file, and so you are (as with the live CD) running
using a RAM-disk file-system. If that is the case, it would have the
same large memory requirements for doing the live-CD install as when
using a CD.

For testing (I think) it is nice to download a bunch of packages you
want to test with, and you can test or re-test at a later time.

I have noticed in doing this, that I have to edit the software sources
to allow "universe" packages.

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] Fwd: Help - Beta2 installation Failed

2013-04-06 Thread Aere Greenway

Ali, and all:

Yesterday, using a Live-USB created by the (ubuntu repository)
"usb-creator-gtk" package (and the beta2 13.04 Lubuntu system), I
installed a system running the live USB, on my 450 megahertz, 512
megabyte RAM HP-Vectra system.

I did not have to remove the ubiquity slideshow package (as I would have
to do with the live CD for a 512 RAM installation).

I think the difference, is that the usb-creator-gtk package creates a
persistence file for you (if you choose that option), so everything used
doesn't have to reside in a RAM file-system (which uses memory needed
for installation).

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] HOWTO Create LiveUSB using "dd"

2013-04-06 Thread Ali Linx (amjjawad)
Hello Aera,

The method that I sent and wanted to share it with those who haven't heard
about it nor used it before, is to create a LiveUSB and quite honestly, I
have no idea if that is a 'persistence' or not?

For testing, 99.9% I used Real Hardware. This is more fun and I just love
it this way. I don't like to use Virtual Machines :) I have it installed
but I don't use it :D

For testing, I don't play with USB Drive, I install directly to the HDD.

For installing on USB Drives, I have made a HOWTO long time ago:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1872303
This is still valid approach but perhaps some screenshots need to be
updated.

To Create LiveUSB, there are several approaches:
1- Using "dd" as described on my Email.
2- using the package that you mentioned.
3- http://www.pendrivelinux.com/
4- And of course, UNetbootin

Phill told me there is a problem with UNetbootin and alternate image of
Lubuntu. So, I listened to his advice and used "dd" command - I wasn't
aware of how to use it so with my friend Mr. Google, I found the answer
right way :D

It is very very simple and easy. YES, the command will indeed destroy each
and every file on the USB Drive but as long as this is a LiveUSB, I don't
keep anything important saved on it.

Thanks!
Ali

Yes, I'll now create a LiveUSB using the 'dd' method and try to install it.
I DO wish it will work this time :(

I will sure keep you and everyone posted. When you are back, poke me on
Failbook and I will be there ;)

Thanks!

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] Fwd: Help - Beta2 installation Failed

2013-04-06 Thread Nio Wiklund
Hi Ali

I don't understand your problem making install USB drives. Please explain!

I've done some testing of the lubuntu raring beta2 desktop 32-bit iso
(and reported it to the qa tracker).

I have made a CD with k3b, a live USB cloned with dd, and
live/persistent live USB drives with usb-creator-gtk of precise (the
raring version is broken) and with unetbootin.

I confirmed the bugs found by urupica and found an own 'minibug', but I
don't know how to report it, because it happens after apport is shut off.
-
Booted from CD and USB cloned directly from the iso file:

At shutdown the plymouth dots keep running until I press Enter. There
used to be a line with something like 'Remove install media and press
Enter'. but it is gone. This is only a minibug, but might confuse some
people.

The only difference is that the disk is ejected, while the USB pendrive
sits there waiting for you. In both cases the plymouth dots continue.

Booted from USB created by usb-creator-gtk and unetbootin the computer
shutdown and rebooted properly. So the minibug only appears on cloned
systems (the computer is waiting for Enter without indicating it).
-
Best regards
Nio

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] Fwd: Help - Beta2 installation Failed

2013-04-06 Thread Lance
If you're multi-booting it's likely this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1080701

It's been around since mid-November and I've been quite vocal about it:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2128648

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2128648&p=12579118#post12579118

It's been a real thorn in my side and it's dramatically slowed my ability to
properly test the iso images.

Hi,
I didn't get an reply from you guys for two days now :D I hope everyone is busy
with testing ;)
Ok, thanks to Phill who advised to go for the alternate image instead of the

DONE successfully from the first time :D

I will try one LAST time to install from the desktop image and will use the
same method to create the liveUSB, that is "dd" method. If it will fail yet
again, I think someone needs to have a serious look at the desktop image.

Will keep you posted ;)

2013-04-06 Thread Ioannis Vranos
I have seen this bug for some time.

After installation, when shutdown pauses, switch to console 7 to see
the message "Press Enter", and there, press Enter.

I hope this helps.

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] Beta 2 is released

2013-04-06 Thread Phill Whiteside
Hi Aere,

it's always good to get new testers on board! I know that the wiki page for
Testing [1] can seem a lot to take on board at one reading, it holds a lot
of background information and is split into various sections, which will
then take you to other sections that provide fuller detail. I'd suggest you
and any other new comers head directly to the iso-testing [2] section which
is linked to from our Testing section on lubuntu. We have done a lot of
work to set the wiki areas up to be as new comer friendly as we can. We
always value input from new comers as to the layout and any FAQ's you'd
like to be on the wiki areas. We have held a series of classroom sessions
on testing, bug reporting etc. [3] and will be doing some more come 13.04.
In addition, Nick has done some video presentations which he'd be more than
happy to get you the links for.

Regards,

Phill.

[Lubuntu-qa] raring-desktop-i386 Installation Test - Report 2

2013-04-06 Thread Ali Linx (amjjawad)
I think it is better to edit the subject and forward my last email about it
since the first email and this one on the same ISO (raring-desktop-i386).

1- I have created a LiveUSB using the 'dd' method.
2- I have tried to boot my test laptop from that LiveUSB
3- Checked disc for errors
4- My machine was sitting and waiting on Lubuntu Logo with the dark navy
wallpaper and the 5 dots
5- Re-checked md5sum for the downloaded ISO (raring-desktop-i386)
6- Re-created the LiveUSB using 'dd' method
7- Went to have my dinner and came back after more than one hour
8- BAD NEWS, the machine is still doing nothing but the 5 dots with the logo

So, this time, the installation is not even done. I can't even see the live
desktop.
Last time, at least I was able to install but then couldn't login to the
desktop. Now, nothing :D

Installing Lubuntu 13.04 beta 2 from raring-alternate-i386 was done
successfully using the 'dd' method to create the LiveUSB.

So, your thoughts are more than welcome as I'm stuck and not sure what to
do?

One may ask why I'm checking the disc for errors and not go ahead and
install?
The answer is:
If the tool to check the disc for errors does not work, how would I expect
the installation to work?
And I won't waste my time yet again to install then get the same result or
even worse :)

Thanks!

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] raring-desktop-i386 Installation Test - Report 2

2013-04-06 Thread Phill Whiteside
Hi Ali,

I cannot spend too much time on this tonight as I have to sort out piglet
being able to connect to a projector for my qa/testing session tomorrow. If
piglet is quite happy connecting to an external monitor system, then I'll
have a play with my i386-desktop ISO and see how it behaves. I can only do
this by VM, as piglet is a fully fledged fledged AMD Turon dual core
machine.

Regards,

Phill.

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] Fwd: Help - Beta2 installation Failed

2013-04-06 Thread Ali Linx (amjjawad)
Hello Lance and thanks for your reply.

I have failed to find any connection or any similarity between my issue
which is explained here:
amjjawad.blogspot.com/2013/04/testing-lubuntu-1304-report-1.html

and the bug that you mentioned:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1080701

Which is saying: "After 'Preparing to install Ubuntu' screen, raring
installation hangs"

and:
Test steps:
1. Boot the machine with usb
2. Enter the wireless password to enable the wifi connection
3. Wait to hear the drums and select 'Install Ubuntu' with English being
the language selection
4. Click 'Continue' with the default selections on the 'Preparing to
install ubuntu' screen( where it shows the power, available disk space and
internet connectivity statu)
5. The installation does not proceed from this point

This has *nothing *to do with my issue here:
amjjawad.blogspot.com/2013/04/testing-lubuntu-1304-report-1.html
You can go back to my first email below to re-check :D

Again, in my case, the installation of raring-desktop-i386 (AKA Lubuntu
13.04 Beta 2 desktop version) installed from USB created by MultiBootUSB
was actually done *successfully *:D

1- Machine rebooted after a successfully installation process (not even a
single error during the installation)
2- USB Removed
3- Booted to my main OS
4- sudo update-grub
5- Rebooted
6- After selecting Lubutnu 13.04 from the GRUB menu
7- http://i49.tinypic.com/2wmoubl.jpg

So again, I don't know how that bug has anything to do with my case?

Thanks :)

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] Beta 2 is released

2013-04-06 Thread prairie zephyr
I just finished a testcase: Alternate Install (Encryption) | Ubuntu QA that
failed but its probably my fault: my ppc mac won't usb boot (FireWire bootable)
but I was hoping lubuntu on a flash drive via yaboot might - nope, a waste of
time.

Just then your mail came in so: What I didn't realize as a new tester:

a test case usually demands a whole disk install (my mac side is easily
backed up with CCC but I haven't been ready to trash my lubuntu system since
the (free) backup options I've looked at don't seem like reliable system
backups). I have volumes on a FireWire drive I could devote to testing but the
testcase requires wiping the entire drive. This makes testing a ppc image a bit
more of a sacrifice since usb flash drives are so cheap, firewire not so much.
I don't see much sense in running the ppc image in a VBox on an Intel Mac (an
option for me) since its the ppc hardware it seems to me that's the main
problem to test against (is this a valid assumption? I'm interested in having
ppc images available & working. x86 is well tested against by comparison). I
couldn't get qemu going on the ubuntu side of my ppc to run tests that way - is
a VirtualBox just as good for testing images?

I did learn a lot by running the encrypted LVM test for lubuntu so I've
decided I can wipe my previous lubuntustudio partitions for testing knowing
I'll get it better by starting out with LVM next time. I do have an old 10GB
disk I was considering swapping in & out of a firewire box just for testing but
rather I'll erase my ppc hard drive for these 3 alt-lubuntu testcases and start
over. My linux yaboot option got messed up from testing ubuntu server and again
by this alt-lubuntu to usb install anyway. It is a bit of a leap of faith to
wipe my ppc mac but I'll learn something.

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] Beta 2 is released

2013-04-06 Thread Phill Whiteside
Hi,

yeah, the different ways of testing is never ending. I use LVM as I can
create a partition without needing to reboot the system. But, and it is a
very important but Testing on real hardware is the only way to fully
test. This page [1] may have too much information on it, but we always
struggle to answer all questions people may have as opposed to giving
people full details. As I've previously said, please do give feed back on
what information we have, where it is and how easy it is for a new comer to
find it.

Regards,

Phill.

I figured where qjackctl isn't one of the core (required - installed by
default) components, I would have to address that problem with the
people supporting JACK/qjackctl.

I don't yet know what the problem is. It won't successfully initialize,
which used to be common, but now is rare.

[Lubuntu-qa] Daily Images

2013-04-06 Thread Phill Whiteside
Hi folks,

the daily images are now turned back on. The lubuntu ones have had been
done as a manual intervention, the rest of the world will build as normal.
(Ubuntu will build this morning).

Long story, but all that matters is that all the daily images are set, once
again. to build automatically.

Regards,

Phill.

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] raring-desktop-i386 Installation Test - Report 2

2013-04-06 Thread Ali Linx (amjjawad)
HOOHAA :D

Finally, the installation of raring-desktop-i386 from the LiveUSB created
by Startup Disk Creator was done successfully :D

However, the same issue has occurred again. Whenever I want to check disc
for errors, it just sits there on the 5 dots with Lubuntu Logo, that is all.

I decided to give it ONE last chance before I totally give up from the
desktop image and it didn't let me down :D

So, I have two successful installations now, one for the desktop image and
the other for the alternate. I'm going to play with the un-official PPA for
Lubuntu (
https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-dev/+archive/non-official-apps?field.series_filter=raring)
and try to produce some bugs/errors as much as possible but that would be
for Round 3 and tomorrow :D

Thank you!

P.S.
Do we have to report the issue as a bug? I mean "check disc for errors"
never worked on the desktop image?!

Hi Ioannis,

Maybe I did not understand your instruction, but this version of raring
does not print "Press Enter" for me in any of the text screens
(by ctrl +alt + F1-6) and not in the graphic screen (by ctrl +alt + F7).
It only states

The system is going down for halt now

in the screens and I think it is sent at the beginning of the shutdown
process. And it works to press Enter in the graphic screen (only).

How should I report it?

There is a test written for "Check disc for defects" here:

http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/243/builds/41187/testcases/1447/results

But a lot of it is wrong I think ... I'm pretty sure that's a 'casper'

desktop.Last time, at least I was able to install but then couldn't login to
the desktop. Now, nothing :D

Installing Lubuntu 13.04 beta 2 from raring-alternate-i386 was done
successfully using the 'dd' method to create the LiveUSB.

So, your thoughts are more than welcome as I'm stuck and not sure what to do?
One may ask why I'm checking the disc for errors and not go ahead and
install?The answer is:

If the tool to check the disc for errors does not work, how would I expect the
installation to work? And I won't waste my time yet again to install then get
the same result or even worse :)

Thanks!

Hi,
I have written everything on my blog with screenshots so there you go:
http://amjjawad.blogspot.com/2013/04/testing-lubuntu-1304-report-1.html

I hate the same issue previously with the daily image of 18-3-2013 but that was
on Beta1 stage. We are now on Beta2 :(
Lance gave me this link previously:

http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/ubuntu-initrd-bug.html
That didn't help previously to fix the issue.

I'm OUT of idea because this is the first time I have a failure installation :(
Thank you!
P.S.Yes, this is a very fresh new installation.

Also note: Lubuntu 12.10 is installed on that very machine and it is my main OS.

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] Fwd: Help - Beta2 installation Failed

2013-04-06 Thread Ioannis Vranos
I just checked Beta 2 in a virtual machine. The message did not appear
in console 7, the first time I checked. It appeared the second time I
switched to it though.

About the bug report, I think the Lubuntu people in here will help you
with it. Perhaps it is Upstart's bug.

wxl:

The problem I ran into with qjackctl was from my lack of care in
configuring it.

It works perfectly, now that I fixed my bad configuration. It seems
rock-solid and reliable.

And (finally) the 1.1.6 version of Fluidsynth (Qsynth) is available with
13.04, so I don't have to apply a PPA fix to libfluidsynth1. That
version also doesn't hang the system if there isn't enough memory for
its soundfont(s).

I really like 13.04, for that reason alone.

I put it through some pretty challenging tests, and Qsynth came through
without cutting out (underruns).

So my minimum system is still viable for running MIDI, if only we can
sort-out the software-updater problem.

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] Fwd: Help - Beta2 installation Failed

2013-04-06 Thread Nio Wiklund
You are right Ioannis,

Actually the first time I tried, the message is shown. This is my result
from VirtualBox (cut from the qa-tracker)
-
VirtualBox-4.1.12_Ubuntu_r7724S_in_Precise_32-bit_768MB_RAM (I think the
one from the repos)

The same result as with the Asus motherboard except the minibug at
poweroff and reboot. Here the message can be seen, because it runs in
text mode (the simple plymouth text dots) and 'Please remove
installation media and close the tray (if any) then press ENTER:'
-
See the attached picture. So we can conclude that the message is there,
but it is hidden, when the graphic plymouth splash screen is running. It
should be fairly easy to fix this bug :-)

Who can help me report it to the devs?
-
@amjjawad

The vbox has 768 MB RAM, and can run the desktop quickly, without any
delay or other problems (except the known bugs). I haven't tried to
install yet.

Best regards
Nio

The only difference is that the disk is ejected, while the USB pendrive
sits there waiting for you. In both cases the plymouth dots continue.

Booted from USB created by usb-creator-gtk and unetbootin the computer
shutdown and rebooted properly. So the minibug only appears on cloned
systems (the computer is waiting for Enter without indicating it).

In my case, as I explained previously, when I go for "Check disc for

Thanks!

[Lubuntu-qa] Disk access after package update (was: Beta 2 is released)

2013-04-06 Thread Jonathan Marsden
On 04/05/2013 03:58 PM, Aere Greenway wrote:

> 13.04 exhibits the same problem as 12.10 (and 12.04), where the
> software updater window goes away, and there is no indication (other

> has completed.

(1) Can you help define "the process" more clearly? Are we talking
about a process (an instance of a Linux userland executable program)
that runs, and continues to run in the background and then exits when
its work is done? If so, what is the name of that process? Or, are we
talking about "disk access ceases"? If the latter, is the issue simply
that of disk caching happening? If the latter, would

  sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sync

solve the issue by forcing all pending writes back out to disk before
the combined command exits back to the shell?

As a quick test, I just ran Lubunu 12.04 in a VM with 512MB RAM and only
40% of one core of my CPU, and ran that command... updated 12 packages
or so. I noticed disk activity for maybe 3 or 4 seconds after the
command completed. Is that the symptom of the problem you are describing?

If you have more time than that to investigate on your own system,
please try running top in a second terminal window during the time of
interest, and note which process(es) use significant CPU or other
resources then, which go away once "the process" completes.

(2) Other than being a performance issue, what is the problem with the
machine being busy for a while? What actual problem or difficulty does
it cause the end user? If they shut down their machine (cleanly, not
just yanking the power cord or hitting the reset button!) during this
time, does filesystem corruption occur, or something similarly bad? Put
another way, what specifically is it that takes this from being "some
slowness in an older computer" to being "a problem"?

Jonathan
