[Logica-l] Fwd: Two postdoc positions in philosophical logic, metaphysics or philosophy of science @ UCLouvain, Belgium

2019-12-20 Por tôpico Peter Verdée
Dear all,

The CEFISES research center of the Université Catholique de Louvain in
Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium is very happy to announce that we are offering two
2-year postdoctoral positions on an FNRS MIS (Mandat d’Impulsion Scientifique)
project entitled “Towards a hyperintensional logical account of explanatory
inference” (see
here
for a description of the project) supervised by Peter Verdée. We look for
enthusiastic, open-minded, creative, and collaborative researchers who are
ready to seriously engage with the project.

More specifically, we look for specialists in logic, metaphysics, epistemology
or philosophy of science who have at least basic competences in non-classical
logic. Experience with the following research topics is a big plus:
substructural logic, truthmaker semantics, HYPE logic, sequent calculi,
grounding, explanation in mathematics, and formal models of explanation. The
postdocs should be able to use Latex and be fluent in English (speaking,
reading and writing). Competence in French is a plus. The starting date of the
postdoc scholarship should be before June 2020 (and as soon as possible).

Please send a cv, a short motivation letter and an academic writing sample (a
published or unpublished paper, essay, or excerpt from a book) to
peter.ver...@uclouvain.be as soon as possible
and before 20/1/2020.

Postdocs in Francophone Belgium receive a rather comfortable salary of around
2450-2700 euro net plus excellent Belgian social security. We offer moreover a
friendly, tolerant and collaborative working environment, where even the
craziest creative ideas are valued. In return the researcher is expected to
work in team, attend our weekly seminar and be present at the university at
least three days a week.

Applicants need to be “in international mobility” condition, i.e. not having
resided nor carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Belgium
for more than 24 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the starting date
of the job.

Best,

Peter Verdée

-- Forwarded message -

The ERC funded project 'Truth and Semantics' hosted by the Department
of Philosophy at the University of Bristol invites applications for a
three-year position as a Research Associate (postdoc). The successful
candidate should have an AOS in the Philosophy of Language/Formal
Semantics and a strong background in logic.

Job reference: ACAD104363

For further particulars and how to apply: University of Bristol job ad
http://www.bristol.ac.uk/jobs/find/details.html?nPostingID=60794&nPostingTargetID=177615&option=28&sort=DESC&respnr=1&ID=Q50FK026203F3VBQBV7V77V83&JobNum=ACAD104363&Resultsperpage=10&lg=UK&mask=uobext

Salary: £33,797 -£38,017

Closing date for applications: 09-Feb-2020

Starting date: October 2020 or earlier---a later starting date is not possible.

For informal enquiries about the position, please contact Johannes
Stern (johannes.st...@bristol.ac.uk)

Project/Job description: The Truth and Semantics (TRUST) ERC Starting
Grant project aims to provide a unified perspective on natural
language semantics, conceived of as truth-conditional semantics, and
the research on the so-called semantic paradoxes in form of theories
of self-applicable truth.

The project consists of two interrelated parts. The first part, Truth
in Semantics, aims at developing semantic accounts for rich fragments
of natural language, that is, fragments in which, besides a
self-applicable notion of truth, we allow for, e.g., modal
expressions, propositional attitudes but also natural language
conditionals. The second part, Truth and the Foundations of Semantics,
assumes a metasemantic perspective and explores the role of the notion
of truth in the foundations of natural language semantics, conceived
of as truth-conditional semantics.

The Research Associate is expected to conduct research on the second
part of the project project and, more generally, explore the role of
self-referential sentences in truth-conditional semantics and its
foundations. They should have a research profile formal semantics and
the philosophy of language but should also possess a strong background
in logic. The main tasks are to produce peer-reviewed scientific
articles and other project outputs, and participate in organising the
project’s events.

[Logica-l] Fwd: [TYPES] In a letter to the US White House, ACM opposes free distribution of peer-reviewed journal articles

Subject: [TYPES] In a letter to the US White House, ACM opposes free
distribution of peer-reviewed journal articles
To: Types list , Jens Palsberg <
palsb...@ucla.edu>, Benjamin Pierce

[ The Types Forum, http://lists.seas.upenn.edu/mailman/listinfo/types-list ]

Dear types-list and SIGPLAN,

I have long been of the opinion that our scientific publications
should be Open Access, and that editors should not request more than
a fair price (cost of publication, which Dasgtuhl estimates at $60
per article). In particular, I believe that copyright transfer
agreements, as imposed by most editors including the ACM, is deeply
unethical: the publishers are not the authors of our scientific
production and they should not force us to give our copyright to
them. A non-exclusive publishing agreement should be enough.

Whether or not you agree with this position, you may be interested in
the content of the following letter to the US White House that
a coalition of scientific publishers, *including the ACM*, signed and
support.

press release from the coalition of editors:
https://newsroom.publishers.org/researchers-and-publishers-oppose-immediate-free-distribution-of-peer-reviewed-journal-articles

(This letter was written in the context of a proposed US legislation
to force more scientists to publish their work in Fair Open Access
venues. I haven't been able to find a precise link to a discussion of
this proposed legislation.)

The following parts of the letter co-signed by the ACM are
particularly juicy:

> [We] have learned that the Administration may be preparing to step
> into the private marketplace and force the immediate free distribution
> of journal articles financed and published by organizations in the
> private sector, including many non-profits. This would effectively
> nationalize the valuable American intellectual property that we
> produce and force us to give it away to the rest of the world for
> free.

> This mandate [...] would make it very difficult for most American
> publishers to invest in publishing these articles. As a consequence,
> it would place increased financial responsibility on the government
> through diverted federal research grant funds or additional monies
> to underwrite the important value added by publishing. In the coming
> years, this cost shift would place billions of dollars of new and
> additional burden on taxpayers.

In my discussion with many of us, I regularly hear that the ACM is
"not evil" (the SIGPLAN, of course, is pure good!) and that placating
its weird views (for example, that it really does cost $700 or $900 to
publish an article as Open Source) is good for our research
community. It do not see how this argument is compatible with the ACM
signing this letter.

I believe that many of our activities, which we collectively trained
ourselves to see as harmless administrative details of our research
work, are in fact empowering the ACM to make those claims. Should we
accept to give away our copyright, or pay¹ unreasonable
Gold Access author processing charges (APCs)?

¹: The SIGPLAN decision to cover APC costs for PACMPL articles is
shielding many of us from paying APCs. But many of the smaller
conferences, symposiums or workshops in our community whose
proceedings are handled by the ACM are still limited to "pay
$900" (or "pay $25 per page") as the only Open Access option, with
copyright transfer as the only free choice, which is effectively
keeping those proceedings Closed-Access.

Yes, my interview is perhaps (fortunately) inconsistent, but in this case
it can be contradictory without danger of triviality explosion :-)
