Got the LoCo Team CDs, but without the contact name :(

2009-11-04 Thread Myriam Schweingruber
Hi all,

As the contact of the Swiss LoCo Team I received the 9.10 CDs this
morning, but more by sheer luck and because I live in a small village
where people know each other. Hadn't the post employee remembered that
I receive such packs regularly, the whole parcel would have been sent
back, since there was no name on it.

It only states:

LOC. SWITZERLAND
followed by the street and town address.

Not a clue what is in the pack, or where they come form (no company,
just a town address for TNT/Swiss Post distribution center, no
indication of Ubuntu or Canonical or Ship-it, whatever).

Since we are requested to give the exact name of the contact,
including phone numbers etc., why is my name not on the parcel? There
are 12 different apartments at that address, with roughly 40+ people
living here, don't expect the postal services/delivery company to
guess, especially not in bigger towns, I am sure they will not bother
but simply send it back.
I fear the worst for other countries maybe never getting their
packs... Also a sender indication would be a good idea, we have so
many stickers to hand out, with 74 official LoCo teams this is only 74
stickers to put on a parcel. And having a precise address on a parcel
is certainly not too difficult, I mean nearly every computer user
knows how to make a spreadsheet for printing labels, this is 101 even
for a Windows user, so from a software distributor I would expect this
to be handled correctly at least.

Sorry if that comes over like a rant, but that is a serious bug in delivery.

Regards, Myriam

Hi Myriam

I am sorry to hear that! I got in touch with those responsible for
ShipIt at Canonical but it seems you may have BCCed
i...@shipit.ubuntu.com already. You should get an answer soon.

Maybe you can share their answer and we can all learn from this. Perhaps
I'll talk more to all my neighbors and postman too!

Cheers,

help for organizing an event in Canada

2009-11-04 Thread Nizar Kerkeni
Hello,
One of our Tunisian LoCo is now in Canada to continue his studies. He was an
active member in our LoCo and now he want to do the same in Canada. He's
looking for help and support. Here is his mail :

Hello Canadian Ubuntero,
My name is Mouahed and I am a student who is a member of Ubuntu Tunisian
LoCo and a representative of my Mozilla Firefox College NBCC. I participated
in several Ubuntu conferences in universities or colleges, I am a member in
two other Mozilla campus reps for the Advancement of Mozilla Firefox and a
Tunisian association for the promotion of free software. I'm here in Moncton
for almost a month exactly to the city of Dieppe, I study Marketing but my
real passion is the 'computer and it has long been a dream that I make an
event at the college where I am studying at NBCC has devoted Mozilla Firefox
and Ubuntu first, I started contacting the head of my department but one day
my teacher is a passionate computer asked me to help replace Windowss xp or
vista because it has made a puddle of days not free it from what I'm talking
all the time in general especially of Linux with my friends who are studying
in multimedia or web. I would like to have your help and support all members
of Ubuntu here in Canada are welcome, the problem is that the department
head asked me three questions which I could not answer now because there are
many things to do before it is mainly to have contact with the Ubuntu
community here, in all cases the head of department is delighted by the idea
if he told me he has a contract with Microsoft and its products, but I want
it to target all the world teachers and students there are many preparations
to do before that's why I need your help any help is welcome and thank you
in advance for replying will be celebrated the next version of the Ubuntu
9.10 as it should.
Best regards

I believe I saw that email a while ago, so not sure it's still valid.

Summarizing: Mouahed is in Dieppe nearby Moncton NB for a month.

I suggest he looks at this list:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CanadianTeam/Members

Also look for any local Linux user groups, of course posting a sign or
two at your target campus or college will probably gather someone's
attention.

ubuntu-za leadership change

2009-11-04 Thread Morgan Collett
Hiya

ubuntu-za co-leader Jonathan Carter (highvoltage) is stepping down due
to time pressures. We've held an election for a new co-leader using
the Launchpad poll mechanism:
http://wiki.ubuntu-za.org/Governance/Election2009

The newly elected co-leader is David Rubin .

Regards
Morgan
Co-leader of Ubuntu-ZA

No, Jonathan's stepping down, David and I are the contacts.

Jonathan's done great work but no longer has time to invest in leading
the community. He is still involved in ubuntu-za and edubuntu and
recently became a MOTU :)
