Re: The advantage of modules?
My best reasons are... Development: You don't have to recompile the kernel a billion times while working on a driver, you just recompile the module. Also, you can debug, unload, fix, recompile, reload a module to add or fix pieces of it all (hopefully) without rebooting. Practical usage: When I take my laptop on the road I use ppp, so I load it then. Most of the time I don't need it, so I don't load it. I've compiled 2.4.3-pre7 and no errors were reported, yet I can't find the kernel bzImage or System.map file. Did I miss a major change in the install procedure since 2.4.1? [OT] Vaio Brightness [WAS: Probably Off-topic Question...]
Ok, I stuffed Tridge's inb / outb program into a little gnome window. Just seems easier to have a spinbox to adjust brightness. Shits and giggles. You can find it at: http://drew.serialhacker.net/vaio_control.tar.gz You either have to run it as root or throw the executable into /usr/local/bin and set the sticky bit. 2 SCSI controllers causing boot problems...
I know I've seen this in the past, but the answer slips my mind and I can't find anything in the archives. I've just set up a box w/ an aic7xxx card. The boot drive hangs off that card. During installation, the boot drive is sda. Lilo contains "root=/dev/sda8". I compiled a new kernel with the 3ware raid driver. When I rebooted, the 3ware card driver must have been loaded first; /dev/sda8 was no longer the root device. Re: USB broken in 2.4.4? Serial Ricochet works, USB performance sucks.
Damn bad luck. I love my ricochet, but have Metricom as the provider. I've used it in the bay area, LA and OC area, Boulder, and NYC. It was a snap to setup with the acm module, and I get almost full 115kbit throughput.
