Re: suggestions sought for a framework for a quick, dirty, really simple GUI prototype

2012-07-19 Thread yochai
Hey,

It isn't the first idea that comes to mind but what about SDL ?

You have no buttons or any other GUI objects, but it doesn't sound like
you need it and SDL suppose to be able to handle a lot of data with no
problem.
Also you can push events (data changes) to the loop safely with threads.

It's just another idea for you to consider.

Shlomi,

I gave it as an idea as I understood he doesn't need a full GUI or
anything with a shiny look but to print a lot of data very fast.

I'm sorry if I miss-understood anything.

Re: tablets, readers and E ink - a question

2012-10-08 Thread yochai
Hey,

>From my experience E-Ink are better for reading plain text.
The E-Ink I had experience with was all black and white and wasn't so
great for internet access or pictures. Reading on it was better then a
paper book, felt the same for the eyes and pages didn't flip by them
self, also a lot of books are much heavier.

The main issues of LCD are the inability to read in direct light and
lower batter life.
Even after anti-glare cover that I've added, I still need to shade the
screen.

Experience:
A few hours of toying with a E-Ink based reader and a lot more with the
Nook Color I own.
The biggest issue I found with the Nook Color for reading was that with
some PDFs it was to slow to read (more then two second to load the
content into the screen) but I think it won't be an issue with a newer
tablet.

If you go for E-Ink make sure that you have a light-source.

Re: tablets, readers and E ink - a question

2012-10-08 Thread yochai
You are right, the Nook Color doesn't use E-Ink.
I can only assume that some PDFs were slow due to the weak CPU as PDFs
that contained only text were readable.

It was tested using CM7 which I'm using instead of the limiting original
software.

Re: multiple python versions

Another option is Nix, which with some
effort can be installed in Ubuntu and can provide you with
different environments for many languages. You can use it to
create as many python installations as you want.

post, without
a virtual environment, in 3.9.6 I get:

>>> import scapy
Traceback (most recent call last):

but the module does exist in 3.8:

sudo pip3 install scapy
Requirement already satisfied: scapy in
/usr/local/lib/python3.8/dist-packages (2.4.4)

So how do I tell the 3.9.6 environment to look for modules
in the 3.8
directory?

You don't, that's the whole point of venv - you have a
separate set of modules in each environment, specific to
it's version.

There's the site-packages argument of course, but it's far
from being best-practice.

you need to make another partition at least 1.5 GB for the Linux OS and
another partition for swap at the size of your RAM
with one of the partitioning tools that are available (I recommend with fibs
which comes with the distribution)
and then to install a boot loader LILO or GRUB in case that the other
partition is far from the boot sectors.
If you will follow the README's and do only thing you are fully understand
their results, there will be no troubles.
if you feel it is complicated you can always wait for the next installation
party in the Technion (not far from Afula ;) )
