Advice: horde, roundcube, squirrelmail

2013-03-10 Thread vordoo

Hi,

Abut to install:  horde, roundcube, squirrelmail on an IMAP server.
I will highly appreciate any comments/insights regarding which &
why is a better solution, especially regarding the use of Hebrew
& the interface on smart phones.

Thanks,
V.

Re: Advice: horde, roundcube, squirrelmail

2013-03-10 Thread E.S. Rosenberg
We had an old horde install, in the end we just upgraded that, the new
horde is really nice, has a good AJAX interface, good interfaces for cell
phone etc. and can be installed and kept up to date using pear.

I can't say I looked enough at the other solutions to tell you which one is
better.

Roundcube iirc has a very nice looking AJAX interface but as far as I've
been able to find doesn't feature additional interfaces for smart phones,
simple browsers or no-ajax modes.

squirrelmail development seemed to be very slow. (it seems to still be
developed but the last stable is from 19 month ago)

As usual it depends on your needs :)

Horde is part of a an application suite (groupware) with great support
by the community and by paid consultants. I tested it long time ago
and it was way too complicated for my needs.
It was difficult to install and maintain.

I use Squirrelmail and Roundcube.
Both were translated to Hebrew and are easy to install and maintain.

Squirrelmail is light and simple, stable, well supported, lot's of addons
a bit "old fashioned" if that bothers you, no embedded editor.
Hebrew is up to the browser.

Roundcubemail is well supported, stable, Ajax based, addons,
TinyEditor works great now for Hebrew without the hacks.
It's a great mail client and fun to use. Consumes its share of
bandwidth but nowadays it's not an issue.

Bottom line:
I use Squirrelmail while abroad. Never failed to serve. So what if
it's ugly :)

Moish.
