Shekem Electric selling desktops with Linux
I usually don't think much of the big electronic networks when it comes to buying a computer but yesterday why flipping through the week-end papers I pleasantly surprised that Shekem Electric is selling Acer desktops with Linux installed. http://www.shekem-electric.co.il/?CategoryID=281&ArticleID=1326 http://www.shekem-electric.co.il/?CategoryID=281&ArticleID=1325 Does anyone here have experience with them? Re: Shekem Electric selling desktops with Linux
I can add that when searching for Linux powered laptops here I found that several stores (not the big elec. chains stores IIRC) sell linux powered Acer laptops. These laptops, and I suspect that the desktop as well, have Linpus on them. They also, probably, contain some binary drivers from Acer, which isn't open source nor can I be sure they're install-able on other linux distros easily. Eventually, since I want to have as hassle-free Linux OS as I can (I don't miss my Gentoo days... :-), I installed Ubuntu on an Acer laptop (thankfully, almost all HW is supported on it, to a workable degree) and they (we) all live(d) happily ever after. I don't know these models, but I have a suggestion. Go to the shop with a bootable disk on key of your favorite linux, boot, save the lspci and then check at home for drivers. It seems that I must have a version with root access which I haven't. What's the way to get it ? Could you paste it here in English ? Will it work with a Samsung Galaxy as it said it works with htc dream and G1 ? thanks 2009/10/31 Shay Ohayon > http://iandroid.co.il/archives/497 > > On Sat, Oct 31, 2009 at 8:06 PM, cyril scetbon wrote: > > It seems that I must have a version with root access which I haven't. > What's > > the way to get it ? cyril scetbon wrote: Could you paste it here in English ? Will it work with a Samsung Galaxy as it said it works with htc dream and G1 ? I have had a Galaxy from Cellcom for a little while (for comparative analysis - http://blog.shemesh.biz/?p=726), and did not manage to root it (though I did not try too hard). In any case, the methods for rooting the G1 (and G2) are different than the ones used for rooting the Galaxy, so look at the appropriate forums. And let me know if you succeed Then again, if you are trying to add Hebrew, then it is likely that you are not using a Cellcom Galaxy, in which case the standard Galaxy rooting techniques may still work. Shachar P.s. Didn't like the Galaxy much. I thought its human interface (physical buttons) were poorly thought out, and the unlocking was nothing short of abysmal. It did have an excellent screen, with more vibrant colors than the G2's (HTC Magic). -- Shachar Shemesh Lingnu Open Source Consulting Ltd. http://www.lingnu.com ___ Linux-il mailing list Linux-il@cs.huji.ac.il http://mailman.cs.huji.ac.il/mailman/listinfo/linux-il

We discussed PolicyKit, integration with NetworkManager, lack of good command line integration and how bad is running big program stacks (GUI) as suid programs: 1. wicd is a GUI program (it uses GTK). 2. Like many similar older programs, there's no NetworkManager integration. 3. Therefore they all need to run as root (via suid/sudo/kdesu/etc) Cheers, -- Oron Peled Voice: +972-4-8228492 o...@actcom.co.il http://users.actcom.co.il/~oron May the Source be with you! ___ Linux-il mailing list Linux-il@cs.huji.ac.il http://mailman.cs.huji.ac.il/mailman/listinfo/linux-il
