Reading from a previous message: <<< My web-sites are hosted on http://www.shlomifish.org/meta/hosting/ (eonspace.net). It's an operation of one or two people, which I can give the details in private emails. I have mostly static HTML there (generated using http://web-cpan.berlios.de/latemp/ and uploaded to the server using rsync) and a few Perl CGI scripts. It is a few servers hosted in Netvision, and was able to successfully sustain at least two Slashdot effects (one of them was thanks to Dotan). I'm happy with the hosting there. There were a few outages or other problems (some of them due to my fault), but it has the advantage of being very personal service. I can always reach my hostmaster using email, phone/mobile, etc. and he'll investigate and remedy the problem I'm having. And the price is cheap and affordable. I should note that the new server supports much more than I'm utilising. They are an up-to-date CentOS release with support for most modern stuff and web technologies, and I'm getting a fully functional ssh access. I once installed a Drupal instance there, but eventually I gave up on the idea of having the Drupal-based site I had in mind (of no fault of the hosting service). >>> Regards, Shlomi Fish -- - Shlomi Fish http://www.shlomifish.org/ What does "Zionism" mean? - http://shlom.in/def-zionism Chuck Norris read the entire English Wikipedia in 24 hours. Ping status with SIGQUIT
Something I just found and thought it might be good to share: http://blog.sqawasmi.com/index.php/2009/09/28/ping-tip-ctl-backslash/ Sending SIGQUIT (ctrl-\) to ping will make it print a status line and continue pinging. ___ Linux-il mailing list Linux-il@cs.huji.ac.il http://mailman.cs.huji.ac.il/mailman/listinfo/linux-il
Re: web hosting
Hi, For US surfers: I would use http://www.medialayer.com Relatively small company but their support is fanatical and the speed is good ( Not optimal for Israelis surfers ) For Israelis surfers: I would use one of the local Israeli hosting companies. -- Michael Ben-Nes - Internet Consultant and Director. http://www.epoch.co.il - weaving the Net. Re: attaching lots of disks to PowerEdge 860?
Hi, I would consider buying used server and fill it up with hard drives. Then using Linux or OpenSolaris to manage them. -- Michael Ben-Nes - Internet Consultant and Director. http://www.epoch.co.il - weaving the Net. We have some "used servers" laying around (and I'd much prefer to use existing hardware), but we also have (or will have in the not far future) about ten or more SATA drives to stick into this array and so far I didn't find a case to put them all in. I got the following pointers from another mailing list: http://www.mwave.com.au/newAU/mwaveAU/productdetail.asp?SKU=16010594 (18 drive bays) http://www.auspcmarket.com.au/index.php?redir=http://www.auspcmarket.com.au/show_product_info.php?input[product_code]=EL-PC-343B&input[category_id]=277 (18 drives) Together with the decommissioned MoBo's/CPU's/Memory we have, these might do the trick. Thanks for the advise. --Amos ___ Linux-il mailing list Linux-il@cs.huji.ac.il http://mailman.cs.huji.ac.il/mailman/listinfo/linux-il

Requirements: disk space 0.5-1 GB download size of frequent pages - 3MB average visits - 300 per day ~= 1 GB / day = 30 GB/month peak load: slashdot effect - 100 K per day ~= 30 Mbps = 300 GB ~ 2 peak days in month = 0.6 TB (GoDaddy failed to service promised 1.5 TB of dedicated hosting) Fast web access without redundant javascript and flashed. (GoDaddy uses a lot javascript and flash, and is slow) FTP access web or real-time access to access.log and error.log Most of bandwidth - US, For Israel I use only small homepage php, ssh, wiki, svn, blogs could be nice but is not yet necessary Where to allocate it? A few additional dollars per month are not very important. BTW, How do I disable that stupid red window on FF? *I* don't have problems with those kind of sites. This "warning" is preventing *me* from looking into the site and learning what/who/how things are done. It gives more than you specify below since it's a full private virtual xen host. With such varying bandwidth requirements, maybe it's worth considering some cheap CDN (Content Delivery Network) service, e.g. see the following (a bit old) thread I found by google'ing "cheap cdn": http://drupal.org/node/218177 > > Fast web access without redundant javascript and flashed.
