sipura SPA-3000 users in Israel

2009-03-09 Thread Arie Skliarouk
Hi,

I know it is not directly Linux related, but hey, I am using it with
Asterisk on Linux! ;-)

I have got an Sipura SPA-3000 VoIP adapter and want to use it with Bezeq for
calling out.
For some reason when I dial dialtones on the phone, Bezeq does not recognize
them properly and makes mistakes in recognizing them.

It is notable, that if during the call through the SPA-3000 I pick up
another phone connected to the same Bezeq line directly (using splitter),
and continue to dial the desired number on the SPA-3000 connected handset,
the dialed number is recognized properly by Bezeq.

I guess that the factory-default settings of SPA-3000 for dialtones is not
suitable for Israel. At the SIP-3000 I have following settings (not that I
am sure what they mean):

PSTN Line -> DTMF Tx Method: Auto
Regional->FXS Port Impedance: 600

Can someone suggest me the ways to make the SPA-3000 to dial out properly?

Try changing the impedance settings to 270+750||150nF so it will match the
"complex impedance" used in Israeli PSTN circuits.

I might be a bit hijacking the thread but since I think Geoffrey uses
VoIP this might be relevant still - does anyone here have a working
solution for faxing over non-PSTN lines? Is Fax<->Email gateway the
only way?

I heard about T.38 and needing a gateway between a regular fax and
something which will convert the analog signal to "Fax Over IP"
(FoIP?), but so far haven't found anyone who can give me such a
service or gadget.

I'd like to take advantage of my All-in-one HP Photosmart printer.
Right now this is the last reason I keep (and pay for) the PSTN line
at home in parallel to a VoIP line.

Thanks,

Check hylafax. Maybe together with iaxmodem from Asterisk.

Many stand-alone faxes actually support T.37 (basically: Fax over SMTP).

T.38 is getting more or less supported in devices and softwares, though.

The round trip time to a well connected (read: 0% packet loss)

On a 150kbit upload ADSL upload of a 1500 bytes packet takes about
85ms. To send out the VoIP packet would take another 85ms (on
condition that you have a really good QoS). This causes latency of
85-170ms with jitter 85ms. The VoIP speech (SIP protocol) has a lot of
skips and is unacceptable.
ahem... accept in real life VoIP packets are rarely larger then 250
bytes (most of the time then are not over 100 byes) and that the SIP
protocol doesn't actually carry any media (read: voice) information -
that is left for RTP.

More to the point - VoIP , in general works great. In the (very distant)
past been on the technical team of a VoIP start up and trust me - VoIP
works great on ADSL lines.

Theory aside, I would like to hear first-hand experiences of people
with 018 before I commit for a year of phone service with them.
That I agree completely - that fact that VoIP works doesn't means that
018 do... :-)

SIP doesn't actually carry voice, only the control information. Voice is
carried in RTP packets and they are normally around 100 bytes.

In any case, my experience is that both 750K ADSl/cables is sufficient for a
good quality phone service, with a lightly usage for internet and phone. The
sip adapter I initially had was made in the US. I assume they use a US proven
technology. My current sip adapter is made by AudioCodes. 012 claims that the
sip adapter they provide should work with any ISP. I had two ISPs, and in my
case their claim is justified.

BTW, I have it from very good sources that there exists newer versions
of the AudioCodes adapters that actually run on Linux and there is even
an up market version that runs Asterisk... :-)

AudioCodes adapters have run Linux for quite some time. In fact, there
was an open GPL violation issue with them for quite some time. I believe
it has been setteled about a year ago or so.

Thanks for a Wonderful Tel Aviv FOSS Club Meeting

2009-03-09 Thread Shlomi Fish
Hi all!

Yesterday Erez (Doron) gave a talk to Telux about receiving Private Satellite
Television on Linux. The talk was very interesting, and I found it especially
encouraging that many people came to hear the talk and the room was at least
half-full. I'd like to thank Erez for volunteering to give a presentation, and
all the people who attended the meeting and made it such a success. Some of
them asked questions or made insightful comments throughout the presentation,
which made it even more interesting.

Some of us went to a nearby café after the meeting - so thanks to all of those
who went there. I'll put the presentation slides on the club's website as soon
as Erez sends them to me, but you really should listen to him giving the
presentation if you're interested in learning more about this subject.

The club homepage is:

http://www.cs.tau.ac.il/telux/

We don't have anything scheduled for now, so if you have an interesting
subject, we'd love to hear you present it. Note that the presentation can only
last an hour because it starts at 18:30 and we have to evacuate the class at
19:45.

Maybe I'll hack something two weeks from now. Possible options are:

1. Some short presentations, possibly including a Tel Aviv-based re-run of the
"There are too many ways to do it" talk that I had already given to the
Jerusalem Perl Mongers.

2. I can try to convince Lisha to give her Emacs presentation again, this time
while being better prepared.

3. Maybe Gabor would like to give a presentation about wxWidgets/wxPerl
programming (this time without Padre).

4. Can someone give a presentation about NIS/NFS administration in Linux?
There was some interest for it during the Welcome-to-Linux series.

5. Other suggestions will be appreciated.

I tried to do it and never had any luck. I have a cable modem from HOT

Some people had good luck using aDSL lines and VoIP, but I was never

When I asked on the Hylafax support list I was told it did not work at
all.

Vonage in the US, provides lines provisioned for FAX, and if you just
have a voice line,
you can dial *99 as a prefix and get a FAX connection. It did not work
from here when I

had a Vonage line.

I've been bugging Sammy Ominsky to do something with OlehPhone. When I

Me too. In case anyone needs to know, it works fine on a HOT voice
line, but unlike the

other alternative voice lines sold here, it is NOT VoIP.

I happen to have the one HP unit that can not be used as a FAX modem,
which is why I

need another FAX modem.

PCI modems are indeed HAM (host assited modems) which are no longer
supported
in Linux. Some models were supported in 2.4 kernels, but not all
chipsets and not
all kernels. When mine died, I found that I had two that were
supported, but the driver

would not compile with my kernel.

Serial modems are still supported, if you can find one and have a

Are USB modems supported?

Everything else said aside, we use DRBD in a master-slave

We are experimenting with write-write and GFS but so far haven't had

That's what everybody keeps saying but as far as I managed to learn

I guess so - that's how mobile modems are used. They just emulate
serial AT protocol on top of USB. NetworkManager will generally
auto-detect and configure them.

(A little anecdote - back when I visited Brazil I got to connect a
borrowed usb mobile modem to my Debian laptop and practically seat in

This is funny. Bezeq already offers you a service to get your faxes
through email. I never understand why people consider a faxed document
as a proof for anything. The funniest thing is when they ask you to
print a document, sign it and fax the result back :-)

/me needs to add a SignatureFilter to his next T.38 fax gateway.
