Hi,

Some commercial software CD's include some kind of a copy protection that
won't let you copy the cd (you just get I/O error after the reading the
first bytes). Maybe thats the case.

Try something like this:
dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/tmp/cd.iso

See if it works, if it does - you should be able to burn this ISO later with
cdrecord.

Use cdbakeoven - nothing is easier then that - and it's easier then xcdroast
and lots of other crap...

I found out that direct copying with cdrecord, as described in
CD-Writing HOWTO, leads to errors too often, so I usually do it in 2
steps: dd the (data) CD to the hard disk, and then just use cdrecord
to write.

For audio CDs I use cdparanoia to get the tracks and cdrecord to
write.

I find the 2-step procedure way more reliable. I don't have a factory
for CD duplication, so I don't care much that it is 2-step. Works for
me.

Whatsup - Important updates

2002-03-19 Thread Amir Tal

Hi Linuxer's,

We wanted to update you in some changes we are making with the site, and
ask
For your opinion\advice on some of them.

1) first, there is a new domain name for us. You can now get to the site
via http://whatsup.org.il .
We thought that as appropriate for Linux related site, .org.il is more
compatible then .co.il . We don't want people to get the feeling that we
are commercial in any way.
The old domain is still active (and will remain active), but in any way
- update your bookmarks ! :)

2) we will start sending a newsletter (in Hebrew of course) to all of
our registered members. The newsletter will include ALL of the headlines
from the past 24 hours, including links to the original stories (both
translated and to the news source). We would like to get your opinion
about having such a newsletter, and get some new idea's from you about
things a user would like to find there, other the news and site
updates.

3) this is the biggest issue : we were contacted by one of the biggest
site's in Israel about content sharing .
It appears that since Linux is becoming more and more known and
appreciated in Israel, more and more portals want to develop their own
Linux sections, and are looking for sources to get started\share with .
The only problem is that this site requires for exclusively. That means
that we cannot join forces with any other commercial competitor while
working with the current one. Non-commercial sites are ok.
The question is : do you think that this is a smart move for a site at
our position ? We are only active for less then 2 months, and that kind
of move can definitely close some doors\options for us, but on the other
hand we will get the kind of exposure that we can only dream of if we
don't take that offer.
Is this something you would do ?

4) we would like to take this opportunity and ask you all for your help
contributing content to the site. We are all working people that cannot
devote
Ourselves 24\7 for dealing with Linux, but we believe this project has a
huge potential of helping and promoting the local Linux community.
If you feel like you want to chip-in by submitting news, writing
articles, review products, manage a forum etc, please email us to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] .

5) we thought about having an online store that will sell (what else)
Linux related products : original distro's cd's, books, and other
helpful things.
We need you to help us think what products we can have there. Again -
the purpose is NOT commercial in any way. We want to do it as a service
To the community.

Please say if you think an online store is a good idea's by voting at :
http://whatsup.org.il/pollBooth.php?op=results&pollID=15&mode=&order=&th
old=

Thanks for your help, and we hope to be a great service for the Israeli
Linux community.

As I said,

http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO

is your friend.

After you

dd if=/dev/cdrom of=image.iso

you can do (run cdrecord -scanbus to determine the arguments to dev
option)

cdrecord -v speed=8 dev=0,0,0 -data image.iso

In principle, you should be able to do a 1:1 copy of data CD in 1 step
with

cdrecord -v dev=0,0,0 speed=4 -isosize /dev/cdrom

if you have separate CD-ROM and CD-writer drives, but that's what
I said was unreliable. I prefer the 2-step version.

No. at least not for now.
Bare in mind that we are not a commercial organization, and we do not
operate for profit.
Well, at least not for now. Its hard to say what will happen, but this
is not something we currently plan.

We are now equal partners in this project.

Hebrew in gtk2.0.0

2002-03-19 Thread Oren Held

Hi,

I used to have gtk-1.3.14, which supported hebrew quite well.. with bidi
and all.
However, after installing gtk2 this support is gone.. I can't see
anything when I type in hebrew. It might be a fonts problem, but could
it be a gtk bug? I've changed nothing since gtk-1.3.14 and this version
doesn't work well.

bottom line: Can anybody write in hebrew with his gtk2 based apps, while
his gtk version is 2.0.0?

Thanks

- Oren

in that case, you should make a 'limited deal' with them. if i were
you, i'd make sure:

1. either side can break out of the deal within a given time notice (e.g.
   30 days).

2. you keep the copyright for all the material, or otherwise the original
posters do, but you certainly do not transfer copyright to that
   commercial entity.

3. they cannot sue you if they are not satisfied - they at best can
terminate the agreement. ofcourse - this cannot include cases when you
maliciously try to damage their business.

4. they put a link to your site, in a way that it'll be visible the
content comes from your site, not from their site (i.e. even if you let
them copy the material from your site to their - you should make sure
they somewhere mention the content is taken from your site).

i'd also suggest using a 'slow start' on this - otherwise, you might get
overwhelmed with site management tasks. this means they first don't
advertise the site too much - only after it starts gaining users and you
both see you're up to the task, push it forward.

good luck

Any commercial website (like maariv, walla etc..)
Non-commercial websites are ok to post to (iglu, linuxisrael etc...)

Me. I can send it to all of my registered members.
That goes only for Email distribution, not web. (don’t ask me what's the

Is this 1700-2000 hits per day or per week?

If per day, then this is very respectable figure for (currently)
specialized Web site. I doubt very much you'll get multiple of 20 by
sharing content with any popular portal. This is because those portals
serve also people, who are not interested in Linux. The only portal,
with which you should share content, is the home page of www.linux.org.il.
This is the portal of choice for any Israeli, who is interested in Linux.

The deal is that they a re allowed to edit the content before publishing
it. The do have to make sure users know where the
Original came from, but what they are publishing does not have to match
100% to the original.

What would you suggest for copyright in that case ?

That is agreed.

This is a good idea. We need to keep in mind that we cannot deal with
the site all day long (I wish I could),
And considering the kind of traffic they are talking about (20,000 hits
per day - at least) then we should definitely think about that.

Thanks ;)

OT: laptop for lend/rent needed

2002-03-19 Thread Boris Gorelik

Sorry for being OT, but this list is my last hope for help (hope it doesn't
sound too dramatic :-) ).
I'm looking for someone in Jerusalem or Ashdod/Ashkelon or Holon/BatYam
areas, who is willing to bo lend/rent/sell (really cheap) a laptop. I'll
need it for the period between april, 7 till april, 30 (i'm going to
"miluim" :-(  ).
A really old piece is OK, as long as it is capable to run some (STL
supporting) c++ compiler and perform text-edditing.
Thanks in advance

amir,

your email address does not wrok. your mail server (at whatsup.co.il) does
not recognize 'whatsup.co.il' as its own domain, and rejects email sent to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] you'd want to fix this.

if you have a working email address, i could send you a bounce message's

Well, we did post an announcement there when the site started, and we re
on the "Israeli Resources" menu.
I was thinking about giving IGLU the option of publishing out headlines
on their main page. This kind of move can contribute both for us and
IGLU.

Uri,

1) the domain : Co.il has a problem. I am guessing you are using actcom,
because their DNS did not update (for some reason) with the new ip.
We hosted there 2 years ago (?!), and still...
It will be fixed soon.

2) statistics : does it really matter ? We are not having a competition
here. So its 1500...1600...1400 . What's the difference ?
I know those statistics are not accurate, but it does the job as far as
getting a perspective .

3) interspace : being non-commercial means that as far as the services
the site provides, we do not charge users for those services.
We are acting as dealers for interspace for site-hosting, but it has
nothing to do with the main purpose of the site.
The only reason we accepted their request is because its Linux related,
(it refers to hosting on Unix only) .
I know that its slightly conflicts with what I stated, but I'm sure you
understand what I mean. ;)

I was talking about the perspective. If there is no indication what is
being measures, or in this counted, then the numbers are meaningless.

If I see stats I like to know what they're stats of. Otherwise, you might
as well use warp factors, as you say, what's the difference?

Regardless of the stated of the stated purpose of the site, if you're
dealers then you're some kind of a business entity. How you deal with that
is your business, of course, but you give the impression of being a bit
confused about the whole thing.

[explanation sent in private. it has to do with the fact that
whatsup.co.il used to be hosted at actcom and actcom wasn't notified
that it's no longer hosted there].

Some clarifications !

2002-03-19 Thread Amir Tal

Ok, so let's re-arrange and clarify things :
We are a private organization (not registered for now) and the hosting
part is a separate part of what we mainly want to deal with.
We had an offer - we took it. That simple.
I don't see how's that interfering with everything else. Do you see
banners and pop-up's at the main page ?
Maybe we should move the hosting to another, less obvious part of the
site.

I think people got the picture (I hope) of what we are and what we are
trying to deliver. And if not :

Our purpose is to bring the community translated news and free support
environment for Linux. That is all.
We felt that there is a need, mainly by newbie's, to get news and
support in their native language, and since no one done it before, we
did.
We are paying from our personal pockets for hosting the site, and
putting all of our time and efforts into it, and its all done for the
community.
We don't make money off this, and for now, we don't intend to. This is
what I mean when I say "non-commercial" .
I hope you anderstand the diference.
If the hosting page conflicts with that - sorry.

Tal.

I didn't say it was interfering with anything. I was asking what's what.
I don't think banners would interfere with anything either, if you wanted
to have them there.

It just needs to be clarified a bit on the site. Something like
"whatsup.org.il is an interspace dealer ..." etc.
As long as everything is up front why should there be a conflict?
