I am now holding a PCI card by Aztech, with Lucent chips. How am I supposed to know whether it is a winmodem or not (except the obvious - put it in a computer)? IGLU monthly meeting 7.7.2000
Sorry for the late announcment, but the Monthly IGLU meeting wasn't forgoten :-) It will take place this friday (July 7), at 10:00, Schriber building room 007 in Tel-Aviv University. The lecture topic is Networking, and it will be given by Eddie Aronovich of Tel-Aviv university. As usual, we meet at 9:00, talk until 10:00 at which time the lecture begins. The lecture will last until 11:30, no additional discussion is planned so everyone should be home in time for Shabbat. Notice that the lecture will take place in Tel-Aviv University, hopefully it is easier to reach then previous meetings. The Schriber building is best accessed through gate 2, which is the Diaspora (Beit Hatfutsot) gate. I hope I'll see you all there. No need to RSVP - we don't have time for that. If you have any questions - email me personally. Thanks to Shaul Karl and Eddie Aronovich for arranging this lecture. --CS -- Detailed description of the lecture: The coming Friday (Jul 7) I will talk about Linux networking including setup and future sites. The lecture will include: * Implementation of netwrok in Linux * The linux tools for networkig * Monitoring and adminitration The lecture will take about 1.5 hours. I won't talk about security almost at all. One more lecture can be about administration of large networks and than I will talk about: * Massive installation * Logging scanning * Configuration track different machines * tracking the users -- Chen Shapira = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Meeting The Java BiDi team
Hi, I apologize the mass crossposting, but I think this will interest everyone here. Next week the team of engineers responsible for bidi support in Java2 (JDK1.2 - Kestrel and JDK1.3 - Merlin) will be in Israel. The team includes B.C. Beck, the chief bidi programmer and francis Tsang, Java QA manager, and also Bae-Chul Kim and Min-Chi Tien who are responsible for Java Internationalization QA. Jonathan Ben-Avraham was kind enough to arrange a meeting with them. So we can hear the latest developments in Bidi support, and make our ideas and suggestions heard. They are truly interested in hearing our suggestions, and I'm sure many people here have many good suggestions to make. It'll even include B.C.Beck singing about bidi and dancing :-) The meeting is planned for next tuesday (July 11) in the evening (after 18:00). If you think you are interested in showing up, email me ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). The official announcment with the details (time+place) will be sent only to those who email me and say they are interested - I'd rather not disturbe the lists again. -- Chen Shapira = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Title: Linux & AMD Processor. Has someone experienced Linux on PC with AMD Processor ? Thanks for your answers Alex.
Re: Remote Access of Root
The system will not let you telnet nor ftp as root. This is a security feature (I am not sure what it secures, but so be it). I think the best way for you to do this (also in terms of security) is to install OpenSSH. It is free, support both versions of SSH (1 and 2), and works great with Linux. I am not very familiar with Mandrake in particular. If I remeber correctly, and it is based on RedHat, you can download the RedHat RPMS. If not, I am not sure what you can do besides downloading the main package and compiling and installing. You can find everything in http://www.openssh.com. Follow the "linux" links on the left, as the main package is built for OpenBSD, and several patches are necessary (all there). Either way, there are a few defaults that you may wish to change. The default server key length is 768 bits, which I find a little low. I set it to 1024. I also set the default protocol to be SSH2, which is more secure, and doesn't use the patented RSA algorithm for authentication (/etc/ssh/ssh_config and /etc/ssh/sshd_config). If you are not installing from an RPM, you may have a bit of trouble getting the server to run with PAM (it will tell you your user's password is incorrect). Inside the source tree there is a directory called "redhat", in which you can find both a ready script to place in the rc directory for automatic startup, and a sample PAM file (which you will have to rename to sshd from sshd.pam). Again, I am not sure how relevant that is to the Mandrake install. As for an SSH client - if you are using Unix (linux being a Unix for the sake of this discussion), simply install OpenSSH there too. If you are using Windows, I think the best option is called "TeraTerm", which is free (source available, though it is not opensource), along with a plugin called "ttssh". This will only give you telnet, not file transfer, but is the best free solution I could find. There is also an almost free solution, which has file transfer, available from www.ssh.com. I like its terminal emulation less than TTerm, but it is more convinient for ssh operations, and supports SSH2. That's it. Just RTFM "ssh" and "scp", and you have a secured solution, that will allow you to log in and transfer files as root, while not exposing your passwords on the network. Hi in the rc3.d I have: K10xntpd -> ../init.d/xntpd which was installed by the rpm automatically, but it didn't started it when the server boot until i added: S99xntpd -> ../init.d/xntpd Strange. This is how it is supposed to behave. See /etc/rc.d/rc which executes it. Note that you could have used chkconfig for that: chkconfig --add xntpd It uses the values in the comment line "# chkconfig" of the script in init.d as defaults. Of cpurse - I assume that xntpd was packaged correctly with the init script containing something like: # chkconfig 345 50 10 ^ -- Tzafrir Cohen mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.technion.ac.il/~tzafrir = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You just need to take of it on the client side, you don't need (and have no use of) having it answer remote redirect requests. On the client machine (if it's running Linux, otherwise SecureCRT should work): ssh -L 1234:remotehost:21 localhost Mind you, if you are trying to redirect traffic FROM 21, only root can do that (<1024, privileged port). Lucent LTmodems are supported - via vendor - supplied drivers. The same for PCTEL modems. Generally, those modems are not supported because of several reasons : - Hardware vendors are VERY reluctant to provide the specifications - Each and every such software modem uses some UNIQUE protocol -- Regards, Alex Chudnovsky e-mail : [EMAIL PROTECTED] ICQ : 35559910 = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

But if I am not a sys admin? Do you run Quake on you server, latest 2.4.0-test3-pre2-ac2-riel7-aa2 kernel? Is that a reason not to run it on your home machine? Should I have a 12 character password with capitals+symbols+digits on my home machine? Should I have a password at all on my home machine? The answer is simple. Unix model of security is almost useless in a single user machine. It has some uses in a home with few machines used by a few family members, but thumb rules from university and internet servers are invalid. -- Matan Ziv-Av.
