Have you seen any progress on Linux from Alan since 23-Feb-1999? I
have. So what do you think?

Besides, who cares if it's Linux, FreeBSD or something else? As long
as it's a free Unix OS, the rest is really not important.

The problem is not PCI , the problem is with winmodem. ( most pci modem are
win modem
but not all of them). there is limited support to some of these modems. I
think that the lucent
modem is supported under linux.

I am now holding a PCI card by Aztech, with Lucent chips. How am I supposed to
know whether it is a winmodem or not (except the obvious - put it in a
computer)?

I went to the Aztech site, and they don't say anything from which one may
understand it is a winmodem, but what does that mean?

Check if it's mentioned here:

All the Aztech made Lucent based chipsets mentioned are marked as
Winmodems so it seems that it is a Windmodem.

Meeting The Java BiDi team

2000-07-05 Thread Chen Shapira

Hi,

I apologize the mass crossposting, but I think this will interest everyone
here.

Next week the team of engineers responsible for bidi support in Java2
(JDK1.2 - Kestrel and JDK1.3 - Merlin) will be in Israel.
The team includes B.C. Beck, the chief bidi programmer and francis Tsang,
Java QA
manager, and also Bae-Chul Kim and Min-Chi Tien who are responsible for
Java Internationalization QA.

Jonathan Ben-Avraham was kind enough to arrange a meeting with them.
So we can hear the latest developments in Bidi support, and make our ideas
and suggestions heard. They are truly interested in hearing our suggestions,
and I'm sure many people here have many good suggestions to make.

It'll even include B.C.Beck singing about bidi and dancing :-)

The meeting is planned for next tuesday (July 11) in the evening (after
18:00).

If you think you are interested in showing up, email me
([EMAIL PROTECTED]).
The official announcment with the details (time+place) will be sent only to
those who email me and say they are interested - I'd rather not disturbe the
lists again.

Goto the linmodems web site: http://linmodems.org - and download the

Re: Remote Access of Root

2000-07-05 Thread Shachar Shemesh

The system will not let you telnet nor ftp as root. This is a security
feature (I am not sure what it secures, but so be it).

I think the best way for you to do this (also in terms of security) is to
install OpenSSH. It is free, support both versions of SSH (1 and 2), and
works great with Linux.

I am not very familiar with Mandrake in particular. If I remeber correctly,
and it is based on RedHat, you can download the RedHat RPMS. If not, I am not
sure what you can do besides downloading the main package and compiling and
installing. You can find everything in http://www.openssh.com. Follow the
"linux" links on the left, as the main package is built for OpenBSD, and
several patches are necessary (all there).

Either way, there are a few defaults that you may wish to change. The default
server key length is 768 bits, which I find a little low. I set it to 1024. I
also set the default protocol to be SSH2, which is more secure, and doesn't
use the patented RSA algorithm for authentication (/etc/ssh/ssh_config and
/etc/ssh/sshd_config).

If you are not installing from an RPM, you may have a bit of trouble getting
the server to run with PAM (it will tell you your user's password is
incorrect). Inside the source tree there is a directory called "redhat", in
which you can find both a ready script to place in the rc directory for
automatic startup, and a sample PAM file (which you will have to rename to
sshd from sshd.pam). Again, I am not sure how relevant that is to the
Mandrake install.

As for an SSH client - if you are using Unix (linux being a Unix for the sake
of this discussion), simply install OpenSSH there too. If you are using
Windows, I think the best option is called "TeraTerm", which is free (source
available, though it is not opensource), along with a plugin called "ttssh".
This will only give you telnet, not file transfer, but is the best free
solution I could find.

There is also an almost free solution, which has file transfer, available
from www.ssh.com. I like its terminal emulation less than TTerm, but it is
more convinient for ssh operations, and supports SSH2.

That's it. Just RTFM "ssh" and "scp", and you have a secured solution, that
will allow you to log in and transfer files as root, while not exposing your
passwords on the network.

Look for PC-Tel chipset based PCI modems - these are hardware modems and
all you need to do in order to use it - is to use the command setserial,

To allow root to log in from everywhere:
mv /etc/securetty /etc/securetty-disabled

To allow root to log in with ftp:
perl -ni -e 'print unless $_ =~ /^root$/' /etc/ftpusers

Neither is recommended.

Re: port forwarding in SSH2

Hi Miki,

This cannot really work. The ftp protocol requires some more
connections and ports (20 aka ftp-data) to be forwarded in the other
direction.

  What's wrong with a simple scp ?

Hebrew on Linux - in Linux weekly news

2000-07-05 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo

Hi,

I just found this on http://lwn.net/daily

---
Linux Hebrew Support
Distributions, July 4 (Tuesday - U.S. Independence Day)
Liz Coolbaugh was asked in December of 1999, at the Earthweb conference
in New York, if she knew of any Linux distributions with Hebrew support.
So far, she still has not found any fully-developed Hebrew Linux
distributions. However, the following projects are working on
Hebrew/Arabic support for Linux. Clearly, if you are interested, they
would probably appreciate assistance.

Ivrix (pronounced eevreex) (they gave a link to all)
The LinuX project
The Israeli Linux Users Group (very slow link)

Note that the link to Ivrix was found on KernelNotes.
---

Ira, this question is for you: Why our ILUG web site is so slow from
U.S?? bandwidth not enough?

Thanks
Hetz

In fact, I had once a problem when my AMD/K6 (200MHz,
B stepping) hanged on "Checking HLT" with RedHat 4.2
(and whatever kernel it shipped). Probably could be
solved with "nohlt", but I didn't know all this then.

Works fine now, and feels just slightly hot when idle.

The kernel's internal CPU parameter, which's scale
differs from one CPU to another (on my AMD K6,
it's 2 times the MHz, while on Pentiums it's 1 to 1),
so it cannot be used for speed measurements or
benchmarks whatsoever.

There's a mini-HOWTO about this.

This is how it is supposed to behave. See /etc/rc.d/rc which executes it.

Note that you could have used chkconfig for that:
chkconfig --add xntpd

It uses the values in the comment line "# chkconfig" of the script in
init.d as defaults.

Of cpurse - I assume that xntpd was packaged correctly with the init
script containing something like:
# chkconfig 345 50 10

what they might have found to be slow was the domain resolution time,
not the actual access to the site. I have brought up the issue with YBA
in the past but got very little cooperation.

that is all in the past now. I have decided not to take any part in the

You can forward the control channel just fine.

You just need to take of it on the client side, you don't need
(and have no use of) having it answer remote redirect requests.

On the client machine (if it's running Linux, otherwise
SecureCRT should work):

ssh -L 1234:remotehost:21 localhost

Mind you, if you are trying to redirect traffic FROM 21,
only root can do that (<1024, privileged port). That's not
what you should be doing though.

Lucent LTmodems are supported - via vendor - supplied drivers.
The same for PCTEL modems.
Generally, those modems are not supported because of several reasons :
- Hardware vendors are VERY reluctant to provide the specifications
- Each and every such software modem uses some UNIQUE protocol

But if I am not a sys admin? Do you run Quake on you server, latest
2.4.0-test3-pre2-ac2-riel7-aa2 kernel? Is that a reason not to run it on
your home machine?
Should I have a 12 character password with capitals+symbols+digits on my
home machine? Should I have a password at all on my home machine?

The answer is simple. Unix model of security is almost useless in a
single user machine. It has some uses in a home with few machines used
by a few family members, but thumb rules from university and internet
servers are invalid.
