Re: [LincolnTalk] Brown water in Lincoln?

2021-09-08 Thread Rob
There was a water main break at the intersection of Todd Pond and Lincoln Road
at around 5 last night. Fixed around 10pm. That might have stirred up some
sediment. Here on Todd Pond we had brown water as we flushed the air out of the
pipes in the morning.

[LincolnTalk] Ice rink in front of Pierce House

2021-12-20 Thread Rob
Hi all,

The rink was built this weekend and mostly filled with water. Please wait to go
on the ice until the “rink open” sign is up. The weather this week is supposed
to be good for freezing and our hope is to have the rink ready to skate by the
school’s December break.

For those with dogs, please try and keep dogs off of the ice as it’s freezing.
Their nails can rip the liner.

More details will be coming in the next few days. Get those skates sharpened!

Re: [LincolnTalk] First Day

2021-12-30 Thread Rob
Hi Diane,

There nothing we’d like better than to see you grandkids and others skating.
Unfortunately I don’t think the rink will be open by then. The weather has not
cooperated and the ice that had set has since mostly melted. It doesn’t look
like the weather will dip low enough to set the 4” of ice needed to safely
skate.

Think cold weather and think Ice!

Re: [LincolnTalk] Ice rink open?

2022-01-09 Thread Rob
The ice rink is open! It got a bunch of snow that turned to slush that turned
to ice, so it’s not the smoothest surface today, but it is skatable. Over the
next few days we’ll work on smoothing out the ice.

One note, please do not park or pull over on the driveway going to the Pierce
House. Parking is in the lot behind, or on the side of Weston Road (if it’s
been plowed out). Especially with the COVID testing happening at Pierce House
we cannot block the right of way, or park on the grass. You can drop off kids
and gear, but please respect the Pierce House property while skating so we can
come back next year!

Thanks,

Rob, on behalf of the rink subcommittee

 Hi Lincoln,

To understand the housing situation, we must understand what is happening
 in Boston and the region:
When housing costs go up in Boston, it goes up everywhere.
Affordability of housing is not just about cost, it's about access to
 public transportation and jobs.
Builders have been building fewer houses since 2008. They are building
houses and apartments mainly in high income areas (along 128).
Another factor is that people who used to retire and move south are now
staying because of the quality of our healthcare system here in Mass.
I think the solution is real full time jobs that pay well (at least $20).
Another positive thing that I see happening in the next 5 years is
conversion of many office and commercial spaces into apartments.
 I hope this helps.

[LincolnTalk] The rink is OPEN

Grab your skates and come on down for the first chance to skate on the town
rink in front of the Pierce House!

The weather is perfect for skating today and the ice might not last too long
into the week, so get it while you can.

Wrap up Winter Carnival with a skate and keep thinking ice.

[LincolnTalk] Candidate meeting recording

2023-03-23 Thread Rob
Hi all,

The Zoom recording of Tuesday’s PTO candidate meeting is now available.
https://cloud.castus.tv/vod/lincoln/video/641c85a7774f7a00085390e3?page=HOME

Please be advised that the recording didn’t record the speaker view, rather, it
recorded the thumbnail view, so the candidates, when they are on the screen are
just a thumbnail size. It’s my fault for not setting it up properly, and I
apologize for the viewing experience. I miss Jim Cunningham!!!

[LincolnTalk] Fwd: CAUTION DURING FEMA EMERGENCY TEST

  PLEASE READ THROUGH CAREFULLY

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will conduct a National Test of its Integrated Public Alert and Warning System on
Wednesday, October 4, 2023, from approximately

2:20 p.m. to 2:50 p.m.

Survivors of domestic abuse are advised to turn off any mobile device they want to keep hidden during the test.

This is because many survivors keep second phones as a lifeline, and the test will cause people's phones and tablets to produce a loud ALERT tone, which could give away the location of secret devices.

It is important to note that the alarm will NOT SOUND if the phone is switched off or put on airplane mode. It is suggested that all survivors take the necessary precautions to protect themselves during this test.

[LincolnTalk] Lincoln co-Ed Softball registration is open!

2022-06-15 Thread Rob
If you want to get out and be social while getting a bit of exercise, come play
softball! Must be 18 or older to play. We play on Codman Field by the pool,
usually on a Sunday, Monday or Thursday through the summer. We have 4-5 teams
so if you’ve played before, rejoin your team, and if you’re new to the league
you can be placed on a team or pick the one you’d like to join.

Can’t make every week? No problem! The more the merrier. $40 early bird special
registration ends today! $50 starting tomorrow.

It’s fun, no pressure and we often continue the camaraderie at The Tack Room
afterwards.

Register here. https://lincolncoedsoftballleague.sportsengine-prelive.com/

[LincolnTalk] Support for next steps on Community Center journey

2022-11-16 Thread Rob
From what I heard Jonathan Dwyer say last night, at this point there are NO
budgets, and there are no final plans for the Community Center. The $325K is
intended to hire an outside architect to work with the CCBC to review the
options that were worked out from 2018, and to ALSO add/subtract features and
consider learnings we’ve had over the last 3 years, and to consider new
information (cost, etc…) to come up with a plan to present to the town again at
the next town meeting. Ideally it would be something we could vote on to
continue the process.

A “no” vote for this money prevents Lincoln from having the benefit of an
(outside) expert to come up with a new plan that fits with post-COVID learnings
and today’s financial reality and stops the process in its tracks.

I for one will vote to support the town’s request to spend this money on
assessing the 2018 plans to see if they are a fit for 2023 and beyond. I will
vote again if and when asked for more funds for further studies and/or moving
forward with a Community Center once we have more information gathered by these
outside experts and town staff and volunteers.

I am also eager to volunteer to help raise private funds to defray any tax
burden the community center might incur.

Rob Stringer

[LincolnTalk] It's getting colder: Time to think ICE!

2021-11-03 Thread Rob Stringer
Greetings fellow Lincolnites!

It’s getting colder and the Parks and Rec Department is looking for volunteers
to join the ice Rink Subcommittee.

Last year we had a great group of folks who helped build the rink, maintain the
ice throughout the season then help close it down once the ice melted. Do you
or your family want to use the ice rink this year? Consider volunteering to
help make the rink a reality. We can’t have the rink without volunteers helping
out.

The rink this year will be a bit bigger than last year; 40’ x 80’ instead of
30’ x 60’ and it will be in front of Pierce House instead of behind Town
Office. Parking will be in the lot behind the Pierce House. We are aiming to
fill the rink mid-December and expect the ice to stay frozen through mid-March.
Any help is appreciated. More details, including ice rules will be coming out
closer to our expected opening date.

Skates can be sharpened at Zwicker’s <https://zwickers.com/> in Bedford or
Tricon Sports <https://www.tricon-retail.com/> in Lexington.

Please let Rob Stringer urbanviney...@comcast.net
<mailto:urbanviney...@comcast.net> know if you want to learn more about being a
part of the Rink sub-committee. We’ll have our first meeting before the end of
November.

Thank you for considering it and I hope to see you on the ice.

Cheers,

Rob Stringer

[LincolnTalk] Volunteer opportunity: urgent need

2022-01-11 Thread Rob Stringer
LincolnTalkers,

Community Servings is an organization my wife and I have been supporting for
years. We recently got this email from them with an urgent request for
volunteers to help in their commercial kitchen to prepare medically tailored
meals for those that are food insecure. If you are interested in learning
more, please read the email pasted below.

Thanks you in advance, and maybe I’ll see you on the line (masked).

Rob
15 TPR
We’re facing an urgent need for individual volunteers to assist our kitchen
team in prepping and packaging 18,000 medically tailored meals weekly. We’re
currently serving over 80% more people than in March 2020 – and we need your
help to get the job done.

Because of yet another wave of COVID-19, our January volunteer numbers are much
lower than we need to produce this record amount of life-saving meals.

As always, the health and safety of our team, volunteers, and immunocompromised
clients are paramount. That’s why we require all volunteers to be fully
vaccinated, have their temperature taken, and wear a surgical or KN95 face mask
(that we provide) when inside our building. We also equipped our kitchen with
hospital-grade air ventilation and filtration systems to ensure fresh, clean
airflow.

Kitchen volunteer shifts are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon, 1 p.m.
to 4 p.m., and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Once on-site, you’ll collaborate with our team
to peel and chop veggies, package soups, stews, and salads, and pack meal bags
for delivery.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Longtime Gas Leak on Sandy Pond Road

2023-10-31 Thread Rob Haslinger
As Andrew says, there's a prioritization process and they are very, very
backed up. When we lived in Arlington there was a terrible leak under our
street that all the neighbors could smell. We called National Grid and they
did send someone out to look. He was very honest with us and explained that
the only way a crew would be sent out in any reasonable time frame was if
the leak was within 10 (or close to that) feet of a house or manhole.

In our case it turned out the leak was in the main right under the manhole,
so a crew arrived within 30 minutes. It was indeed quite the process of
ripping up the street and fixing it.

Best Rob

Re: [LincolnTalk] Many more than 640 units may be developed. An explanation

2023-11-07 Thread Rob Haslinger
Hi Ben and others -

Thanks for digging into the details of how the state compliance model
works. I'm a Data Scientist by profession so the video seemed clear to me
after a few viewings, but I'm still drinking my coffee and not firing on
cylinders yet so I wanted to sanity check my understanding.

As I understand you, the crux of the problem is that the state model for
calculating compliant units can not be used to accurately estimate the
number of units that could by right be built on parcels that include
wetlands. This stems from two factors:

 1) The state model underestimates buildable area because it removes 20% of
the area for "free space" before subtracting off the wetlands, rather than
after subtracting wetlands (as seems more reasonable). This lowers the
number of compliant units we get per parcel, which means we need more
parcels to comply.
2) The actual number of units a developer can legally build on a parcel has
nothing to do with the number of compliant units, but instead is simply the
total parcel area (including wetlands) multiplied by the zoned density
which under the HCA must be 15 units per acre.

The upshot then is that if we include parcels with wetlands, the number of
units that can be built by right may be many more than the number of
compliant units. The number of compliant units is therefore extremely
misleading for estimating how many units might be built by right.

Do I correctly understand your points or have I missed something?

Thanks again for the effort you put into digging in and explaining the
details to us all.

Cheers

[LincolnTalk] Looking for display case

2023-11-10 Thread Rob Haslinger
This is a pretty random question, but anyone have thoughts on where I
might buy a display case for a small <1 foot high statue? I’m thinking of
some sort of domed glass casing set onto a wood base. Doesn’t have to be
museum grade but not totally flimsy either.

I said it was a random question :-) Thx in advance.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Radical change in Lincoln

2023-11-20 Thread Rob Haslinger
Being new to town I’m not terribly familiar with the town meeting process.
I will note however that for those of us with time consuming
responsibilities (in our case small children) it may be challenging to
attend a lengthy meeting despite caring deeply about the issues and doing
our best to stay informed. Just a comment, I may be missing something
about how this works.

changing it out so I don’t think the nectar has gone bad.

Anyone have any tips or tricks?

[LincolnTalk] Kids violin teacher?

Hi - I’m looking for a violin teacher for my 5 year old who has been
expressing a lot of interest after watching me play. Any suggestions for
local teachers? Suzuki would be fine as a start but I’m not wedded to that.

Thanks in advance for any leads.

[LincolnTalk] Traffic

2024-07-16 Thread Rob Haslinger
Hi Everyone-

Who is the right person or organization in town to contact about traffic
issues? We live on 177 (busy busy road) near tower and for the second time
this year someone has crashed into the pilons guarding the sidewalk near my
driveway entrance. That’s where my kids wait for the school bus. They left
their entire bumper.

I realize I live on perhaps the busiest road in town but I wanted to
inquire if there are any options whatsoever for slowing down traffic this
curve. It’s a long shot I know.

Thanks in advance

[LincolnTalk] Rob Stringer running for re-election to the Parks and Recreation Committee

2023-01-06 Thread Rob Stringer
Hello Lincoln,

It is with great enthusiasm that I'm announcing my plans to re-run for a seat
on the Parks and Recreation Committee for a three year term in March.

Over the past 3 years I've been able to meet and get to know many Lincoln
residents through the Parks and Recreation Committee. During my tenure we hired
a new Director, Jessica Downing, and worked through how to manage programming
and events with the onset and continuation of the pandemic. I'm pleased to
report our enrollment numbers today are back to pre-pandemic levels. The town
ice rink has been a particular joy to work on and see the community enjoy. I
look forward to getting it up and running again this year in front of the
Pierce House, weather permitting.

For those I've not yet met, my family and I moved to Lincoln six years ago and
love it here. Our two boys (11th grader at LS and an 8th grader at LPS) have
played baseball, soccer, and basketball through the various leagues in town and
continue to make good friends and good memories. My wife, Tris, and I play in
the adult Co-Ed Softball League and have loved getting to know a wider netword
of adults here in town. Many mornings you can find us walking or jogging the
roads or trails throughout Lincoln with our dog, Gaia. You may also have seen
some of my art in the Lincoln Art Show, put on by the Parks and Recreation
Department every fall.

Alongside Parks and Recreation, I am an at-large member and Co-Chair of IDEA,
the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Anti-Racism Committee. I feel there are
synergies to being on both Committees to ensure that Lincoln is a welcoming,
fun and engaging place for everyone. As an avid supporter of our school
district’s participation in the METCO program and a member of the METCO
Coordinating Committee, I love how our Parks and Recreation programming helps
bring the entire Lincoln School community together through our wonderful Summer
Camp offerings and other after-school programs. As past Co-Chair of the
Lincoln Parent Teacher Organization (LPTO) I've been able to better get to know
the Lincoln Schools and some of the needs of parents with school aged children.
It's my goal to use that experience to help the Parks and Recreation Department
continue to provide programming that serves this community well. Lastly, I
volunteer regularly with the Council on Aging and Human Services Friday lunch
program, and have greatly enjoyed meeting and getting to know those who both
serve and attend.

I have deeply enjoyed working as part of the Parks and Recreation Committee to
date and hope to continue the work we’ve been doing to provide the greater
Lincoln community with activities and programs that enable us to learn, grow
and laugh together. I hope you will please consider voting for me on March
27th for the Parks and Recreation Committee.

Cheers,

Rob Stringer

Re: [LincolnTalk] Family activities

2023-01-09 Thread Rob Stringer
Hi Cathy,

The rink is open dawn to dusk. During the weekend of Winter Carnival we have
lights for night skating, but otherwise it gets pretty dark on the early side.
The rink was put up over this past weekend and is in the process of freezing.
We hope it gets cold enough in the next few days to firm up the ice for
skating, but with rain in the forecast for the weekend it might be closed
again.

If the new family has a child at the Lincoln Public Schools and they aren’t yet
on the PTO’s mailing list, you can have them go to
https://lpto.membershiptoolkit.com/home and create an account. The PTO sends
out weekly email Minilink newsletters with activities and other information or
families.

[LincolnTalk] LPTO Candidate Forum, Tuesday, March 21, 7pm Learning Commons, Lincoln Public Schools

2023-03-09 Thread Rob Stringer
LINCOLN PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION (LPTO)

Lincoln Town Election Candidate Forum
March 21, 2023
7:00-9:00pm / Learning Commons, Lincoln Public Schools

[Lincoln Town Election: Monday March 27, 2021]
* Mask-wearing at this indoor in-person event is not mandated, though
optional for all attendees who wish to continue to mask.
* Current planning entails live-streaming of this forum via Zoom (see
below for log in information), as well as recording for subsequent posting on
www.lincolntown.org <http://www.lincolntown.org/>, to encourage community
participation.

Logistical Guidelines
* If arriving via car, feel free to park in the Smith lot or in any of
the available spaces close to the Main Entrance. Please enter via the set of
doors closest to the parking lot adjacent to the Smith lot, or the set of doors
at the Main Entrance.
* Upon arrival, please stop at the LPTO table in the Lobby of the
Learning Commons to get questions sheets and a pencil.

Campaigning Guidelines
* Candidates will have the option to place campaign materials for public
distribution on a LPTO-designated table in the back of the Learning Commons
during this event.
* During the Candidate Forum itself, Candidates are asked to please
refrain from campaign speeches or speechifying, as the event is intended as an
information session and meet-and-greet whereby Voters can get acquainted with
Candidates and their views, not be persuaded or pressured to vote for one
Candidate over another.

Forum Guidelines
* The purpose of this Candidate Forum is to create an opportunity for
Candidates to introduce themselves, and for Voters to get acquainted with
Candidates' views and stances via the Introductions round as well as a
subsequent Question & Answer portion. This event is intended to foster greater
overall collective understanding as a community, not result in increased
competition among Candidates.
* This Candidate Forum is not intended as a debate, and Candidates are
asked to please refrain from laterally addressing or referring to fellow
Candidates on the panel.
* During the Introductions round, Candidates will be invited to Introduce
themselves within 2 minutes or less. All Candidates are strongly requested to
honor equitable and balanced airtime during this portion of the forum by please
honoring this 2-minutes-or-less guideline. We will have a clock available to
check timing.
*Audience members will be invited to join in a collective round of
applause for all the Candidates at the beginning of the Introductions round, as
well as at the conclusion of the Introductions round. Accordingly, audience
members will be asked to please refrain from cheering for (an) individual
Candidate(s) during the Introductions round of the forum.
* Following the Introductions round, the Moderators will pose questions
to Candidates from cards originated from the Audience members. Candidates are
asked to please address the Audience in providing responses, not fellow
Candidates on the panel.
* Audience members will be asked to pose questions that apply to all
Candidates in a race, not questions that are addressed to an individual
Candidate.
* During the Question & Answer portion, Candidates are asked to provide
responses to Audience members that do not exceed 2 minutes. The honoring of
this guideline will encourage greater opportunity to hear more questioning from
more Voters, more questions for more Candidates, greater potential air-time for
all Candidates, and greater engagement for all attendees by the conclusion of
the evening.

Many Thanks to All in the honoring of these guidelines!

The Fireworks are not happening this year due to safety and parking

July 4th Parade, Boy Scout cookout, and town-wide community swim. T should be a
great day for all! Come on down.

[LincolnTalk] Violin teacher for adult

2023-07-23 Thread Rob Haslinger
Hi I’m looking for a violin teacher for myself. I played very seriously for
about 25 years and then burned out and have only played occasionally for
the last 20. The skill is still there but I’m very very rusty.

Anyone have suggestions for a local teacher who might be able to get me
back up to speed? If they have any experience with bluegrass fiddle that
would be a significant plus but right now I just need a bit of a kick to
get playing again.

Thanks!

Re: [LincolnTalk] Lincoln Green Energy Choice

2023-08-10 Thread Rob Haslinger
You can go to this MA govt page and compare rates of different suppliers.

https://www.energyswitchma.gov/#/

It’s pretty easy to compare and change with a few clicks. You do have to
check the terms, that there no early cancel fees and also be mindful to
check that your rate won’t go up after the intro period. It likely will
since I believe most of these suppliers suck you in with a low into rate
and hope you forget to check at the end of the initial contract period. But
you can change as often as you want as long as your contract doesn’t have
an early cancellation fee. You just have to stay on top of this.

Before July the base eversource rate in Lincoln was 26c/kWh which is pretty
egregious but it dropped to 16 in July. They change the base rate Jan and
July.

Good luck

[LincolnTalk] Raptor rescue?

2023-08-16 Thread Rob Haslinger
Is there an organization around here that does raptor rescue? We were
walking along south great road by Hannan farms and a young red tail sitting
on a fence post took off and immediately took a header into the road. I
shooed it back to the side. Looks like a broken wing. Last I saw it it was
settling down for the evening on the porch railing of 280 south great rd.

I’m assuming by the time this gets posted and morning rolls around nature
will likely have taken it’s course … on the chance it hasn’t, is there any
organization that rescues hurt raptors?

Thx Rob

Re: [LincolnTalk] What is this bird call

2023-08-26 Thread Rob Haslinger
It was the begging call of a juvenile barred owl. Here’s a recording

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2Zh-XSglkR8

It was freaking out my kids because it was right outside their bedroom
window and I was totally confused because I didn’t realize the juveniles
made that call. The closest thing I could think of was a screech owl but
that wasn’t it.

Thanks to everyone who replied! My kids are no longer freaked out!

[LincolnTalk] Save the Date: Sunday, August 21, 2022

2022-07-11 Thread Rob Stringer
Happy Summer!

The Lincoln Parent Teacher Organization (LPTO) is hosting our 2022 welcome back
party on Codman Field, the afternoon of Sunday, August 21, 2022 and we are
looking for town organizations that would be interested in having a table at
our event.

This is the first welcome back party we've been able to have since the pandemic
started in 2020, so we are very excited to be able to bring the community
together. In the past three years many new families have moved to Lincoln and
joined the Lincoln School community, and they may not know about your
organization. This is an opportunity to showcase who you are and what you do to
all of our families, new and old.

Please let us know if you’re interested in having a table by replying to this
email (urbanviney...@comcast.net <mailto:urbanviney...@comcast.net>) and we’ll
be in touch with more details.

Second vote for S&S. I was very happy with them.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Plumber

Second on John Silva. He fixed several issues for us that needed to be
fixed and told me over the phone how to fix things that he didn’t need to
come out for. Was very happy with him.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Looking for an affordable wearable device to track VO2, HRV, Sleep etc...

2025-07-29 Thread Rob Haslinger
Hi Megan

I worked in this field a few years back. Honestly most of these things work
roughly the same so I think the one you will wear and you like the look of
is probably the best.

They all have roughly the same sensors. To detect HRV or VO2 you need to
have A PPG sensor which uses IR light to detect blood flow and oxygenation
through the skin. Most trackers will have this plus an
accelerometer/gyroscope to detect movement and possibly skin temperature
sensors. They’ll all tout their algorithms but they are basically the same
machine learning models. There’s only so much you can do it really comes
down to signal to noise..

The bigger question is where it physically is on your body, because that
impacts the signal quality. You want something that fits snugly to reduce
random moment and poor signal. Step count will always be bad unless the
sensor is on your hip or better your foot. If it’s a wrist band you’ll get
a lot of false counts because you move your arms around a lot. Sleep
staging will also always be iffy because you really need an eeg electrode
on your head to do that. Most of the products do sleep staging by detecting
movement. When you stop moving they say you’re asleep. You can do a bit
more by integrating blood flow and temp or respiration inferred from
movement of to analyze sleep but it’s always going to be a bit dodgy. If
you are lying still with your eyes open it will think you fell asleep
because you aren’t moving. It’s just the wrong signal.

That said these trackers can tell you some interesting things if you take
them with a grain of salt. A product that fits snugly and you like the look
of and will wear is the way to go I think. Also look at the features of the
app and see if you’ll use them. The Oura ring is supposed to be good. It
fits snugly on your finger so gets good signal. It’s classy too.

Probably more information than anyone bargained for …

Good luck!
