[LincolnTalk] Disposable plates

2025-03-25 Thread Benjamin Shiller
I was wondering if anyone knows why the school uses disposable plates for
the school lunch. Seems like a lot of waste generated every weekday.

[LincolnTalk] Free 3 drawer teak file cabinet

2025-03-25 Thread melbee1...@yahoo.com via Lincoln
Hello LT! We have a solid teak 3 drawer file cabinet that we have been using as
a dresser for the past 10 years. It is still in great shape and definitely has
life left. Hoping someone can find a home for it. We did have to cut the safety
strap to be able to remove the drawers as it was too heavy to move without
doing so.
Thanks!

Electricity and Magnetism with Steve Reznek

Not knowing what electricity and magnetism (E/M) are has not stopped us from learning how to use them. The course traces that learning. The paradox has been called the “Action at a Distance Dilemma”. How can one object affect another when separated from it? The people who have tried to resolve this have been called many things - gods, priests, magicians and physicists. The ancient ideas were Devine mysteries. The course next treats the 1700’s experiments. They explored electrical effects and proposed both the correct and incorrect explanations of their causes. By the 1800’s the modern interpretation began to emerge. Newton’s idea of a field laid the ground work. The central ideas were the electric and magnetic fields with charges and currents as their sources. The final concept was the description of the way a change in a source or a field would charge the other fields. The great realization was that in order to build a motor, a television or a computer: YOU DON’T NEED TO KNOW WHAT E/M ARE. ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW IS HOW CHANGING ONE THING AFFECTS THE OTHERS. Although the E/M interactions are expressed in mathematics, the course does not include math nor require a math background.

More Notable Supreme Court Cases of 2024 and 2025 with Doug Wilkins

Last year's extraordinary U.S. Supreme Court term wasn't just about gun regulation, abortion, President Trump and agency power (all of which we discussed in the fall). The Court also addressed free speech, cutting edge social media issues and voting rights, among other things. Already this year, it has decided the Tik Tok case, including free speech. We will read and discuss summaries of four or five 2024 cases that are significant in themselves or that hint at the justices' likely direction on important questions in the near future. While this course will start where our Fall discussion ended, it is self-contained and does not assume that you took any prior course. We will analyze one case per week and ask:

Did the justices honestly try to determine what the constitution, precedent and facts require?
Or do their decisions just reflect the majority’s policy preferences or partisan behavior?
Which judges provided "swing votes" and why?

As one justice says, to answer these questions, we must “read the decision.” Doug will draw on his experience as a recently-retired trial court judge and, previously, a lawyer who briefed and argued cases in state and federal appellate courts, including one U. S. Supreme Court oral argument.

Does anyone have his contact information?
Many years ago, for the South Sudanese families , SSEF had a Saturday Program
in Lincoln at the Pods. Many kids volunteered and many adults from Lincoln. I
am so grateful for their time and energy! The parents had a series of
workshops, and the kids went to Drumlin Farm and worked with outdoor educators.
Also, Tom offered movement classes- the kids LOVED him. He was amazing.
We are having a Gala on May 17 in Arlington and would very much like to invite
him...does anyone have his contact info?
The kids he worked with are now in college and many have graduated. He would be
amazed

Re: [LincolnTalk] Garage floor painting / epoxy application sugestions

2025-03-25 Thread Ursula Nowak
Hi Lacho,

You could try Hub Masonry. Anatolie Melnic is a stone mason who lives right
here in Lincoln. I have been very pleased with his work. He repointed a
chimney, and repaired an outside wall of the house and parts of my patio.
Each time he did beautiful work and his estimates were much lower than the
other estimates I got. I was especially pleased how he took time to see
what was the real issue with our wall which led to a different solution and
much cheaper repair.

I haven't had my garage floor done, but I know that he does that kind of
work too. I have seen impressive photos of garage floors he has done.

Here is the Town's web page dedicated to Town Meeting:
https://www.lincolntown.org/1538/2025-Annual-Town-Meeting
The link to this page is on the home "landing page" at www.lincolntown.org, so
I am unsure why you had difficulty reaching it.

The Article List and Warrant are the agenda for the day, in two different
formats.

I believe that Town Meeting is simulcast but do not see a link or instructions
for that on this page. I will ask staff in the Town Offices because that page
seems the logical place to put a link.

You are correct that state law precludes any kind of remote voting at Town

[LincolnTalk] FW: Revolutionary New England Choral Music

2025-03-25 Thread June L Matthews

Hello, Lincoln Talk. Enjoy a musical start to your 250th celebration (unless
you've already started)! Boston composer William Billings (1746-1800) and many
others wrote dozens of a cappella choral pieces, mostly in four-part harmony,
with the aim of teaching music and improving the standard of congregational
singing in New England parishes. Some works were hymns, some laments or
dirges, some lengthy anthems with Biblical texts, some marching tunes (maybe
sung by our own Minute Men), some exuberant expressions of patriotism (after
we'd won the war). Hear this music brought to life on Sunday, March 30 by the
group Norumbega Harmony, founded at Wellesley College (hence the name) in the
1970s by singing master Professor Stephen Marini, who will also entertain with
commentary on the songs. All ages are welcome.

What: Choral Songs of Revolutionary New England
When: Sunday, March 30, 3:00 pm
Where: Newton Highlands Congregational Church, 54 Lincoln St. Newton 02461 (an
easy 20-minute drive from Lincoln: S on Rte.128, E on Rte. 9, and you're nearly
there)
Free-will offering
