[LincolnTalk] Inundation District - Award-winning Documentary at Weston First Parish, 7 p.m. April 1

2025-03-24 Thread CJ Sizer
*Inundation District *– an award-winning documentary – explores the
implications of Boston’s decision to ignore the threats posed by climate
change and spend billions of dollars on building a new waterfront district.
The film will be screened on *April 1 (7-9 p.m.) at First Parish Church in
Weston, located at 349 Boston Post Rd*. MetroWest Climate Solutions is
cohosting the screening.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with *David Abel*, one of
the film’s directors. Abel is a *Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter* who
covers climate change for The Boston Globe. He is also a professor of the
practice at Boston University.

In a time of rising seas and intensifying storms, *one of the world’s
wealthiest, most-educated cities made a fateful decision to spend billions
of dollars erecting a new district along its coast.* Unlike other places
imperiled by climate change, this neighborhood of glass towers housing some
of the world’s largest companies was built well after scientists began
warning of the threats, including many at its renowned universities. The
city, which already has more high-tide flooding than nearly any other in
the U.S., called its new quarter the Innovation District. But with seas
rising inexorably, and at an accelerating rate, others are calling the
neighborhood by a different name: *the Inundation District*.

The 79-minute film *won Best Conservation Film at the Mystic Film Festival
as well as the Monadnock International Film Festival's Jonathan Daniels
Award*, which is given to films that "fuse social and/or political
awareness with artistic excellence and encompasses Jonathan Daniels courage
by telling stories of hope, redemption, and the triumph of the human
spirit."

[LincolnTalk] Tip for posting submissions to LT

2025-03-24 Thread cmontie montie . net
Hello LT

Friendly heads-up: If you’re posting to LincolnTalk, please keep in mind that
digest recipients—like me—don’t see attachments (PDFs, JPEGs, etc.) in the
email. Instead, we only get a cryptic link that requires logging into the LT
portal to view the file, which can be a hassle.

So, if your message can be conveyed as plain text in the body of your email
rather than an attachment, it will be more accessible to everyone, including
digest readers. Thanks for considering!

[LincolnTalk] Experiences building an in-law apartment? Handicapped accessibility advice?

2025-03-24 Thread Kim Jalet
Hi LT,

We are considering converting our detached garage into an in-law apartment
for my parents. We are in the preliminary planning stages and are looking
for any advice/input/experiences anyone who has done something similar can
offer. If you've done something like this, what do you wish you had known
or considered? What lessons did you learn? What advice or recommendations
do you have?

We would also be interested in recommendations for architects and other
professionals that we would need.

Additionally, we would be interested in hearing how people have adjusted
their homes to make them more handicapped accessible. If we are going to
build something for my parents as they age, we would like to make sure it's
outfitted with what they will need. One parent already uses a walker and
sometimes a wheelchair.

We appreciate any suggestions you have!

Sincerely, Kim Jalet (Brooks Rd.)
