Re: spacing

2023-07-07 Thread Valentin Petzel
Hello Lydia,

are you sure "theology" should go "the - ol - o - gy"? Shouln’t it be "The - o
- lo - gy"? Also shouldn’t "Orthodoxy" be "Or -- tho -- do -- xy"? It might be
this way in English (they tend to do weird things), I don’t know, but at the
very least it feels weird.

The issue with your spacing is that the second measure takes so much space it
cannot fit the first system anymore. Your choices are:

Reduce font size
Use a more narrow font
Increase indent to make first system shorter

Cheers,
Valentin

It depends on the hyphenation rules (i.e., either UK or US english).
Have a look at

  https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/theology

to see the former as used in the US.

Hm, seems to be correct. I'm just a bit confused by this as it does not appear
to make any sense. From an etymological standpoint theol-ogy does not work out,
but also the pronunciation given by this dictionary entry seems to follow
theo-logy.

Cheers,
Valentin

Hyphenation rules or not, for _singing_ purposes it tends to lead to
better perfomances to put consonant groups at the start of the next
syllable rather than the end of the current one.

Admittedly this works better with non-English languages where vowels
aren't pronounced in dozens of different ways depending on how a word
completes.

LyricExtender doesn't terminate before grace note

2023-07-07 Thread Abraham Lee
All,

This came up on the FB group and I determined that the problem is the
presence of the \acciaccatura. In the following passage, the LyricExtender
somehow misses the signal to end before the grace note appears, forming a
continuous line from "bad" to "ex" instead of stopping near the "c2.". Is
there any workaround that can fix this while keeping the grace note?

\version "2.25"

\new Voice \relative c' {
  \time 3/4
  g'4 a8 b c4 ~ |
  c2. |
  \acciaccatura g8 d'4 e4 c4 |
}
\addlyrics {
  This is a bad __ ex -- ten -- der.
}

Best,
Abraham

Wouldn't another possibility be to stack the problem words sung to
the first note in the second bar?

Instead of
fathers'__doctrines__have__established one
something like:
\markup \column { "fathers' doctrines" "have established" } "  one"

Gould in general disagrees with your assessment :-) However, she gives
plenty of examples where there could and should be different
solutions.
