You have to replace the X.Y.Z with the actual version number of the file you downloaded. First of all, make sure that your working directory is the directory where you downloaded your file. Then, the easiest way to get the filename correct is to let the command shell automatically fill in the file name. So, type in sh lily and then press the TAB key, which fills in the file name and results in something like sh lilypond-2.10.33-1.linux-x86.sh Then you can press enter. I would recommend you to do this as root, since then the lilypond program will installed in /usr/local/bin/ which should be included in your search path by default. If you run the installation as a normal user, the lilypond program will instead be installed in $HOME/bin/, which on most Linux installations means that you have to add $HOME/bin/ to your $PATH environment variable in order to be able to run the program. /Mats Silvan wrote: Hi @ all I tried to install LilyPond using the command "sh lilypond-X.Y.Z.linux-x86.sh". problem with lilypond-book
Dear lilypond-users,
after running lilypond-book (I attached the .tex-file to the mail) I got a
very long error message, I don't understand. I'm not able to produce a pdf
or dvi-file. What have I done wrong?

The complete command should then look something like, sudo sh lilypond-2.10.33-1.linux-x86.sh Alternatively, load up Konsole and look for a little icon in the bottom left looking like the sun and clouds. Click on it and hold down the mouse button. You'll get a little menu which has an option 'Root shell' -- select that and enter your password as requested. any durations specified

The simplest way I can think of to align a syllable with a rest is to
add an invisible note in parallel
with the rest, which the lyrics can align to:

an output question
I was just wondering if it's possible to get lilypond to print 2-up. So I get two A4 sheets on one A3 sheet? I'm really starting to wrap my brain around the idea
of using this software over other notation software,
but I am having a problem. Here is a basic template below:

building a DIY Lilypond engraving server
Hey y'all, I've got a long-term Lilypond-related project I'm interested in working on, and I wanted to brainstorm a bit... I'm planning to publish all my music using Lilypond... of course! ;-) And for the most part, I will be personally making all the engraving choices (ahead of time), generating the appropriate PDFs, and making them available as "static documents" -- the standard publishing workflow. However, for my (Broadway-style) musicals, I'm hoping to allow the "consumers" to make certain choices and have Lilypond "dynamically" generate them the scores/parts/etc. Specifically, the customer should be able to accomplish as many as possible/feasible of the following: 1. Specify transpositions (on a per-song or even per section basis). 2. Make cuts (i.e., omit sections of the music). 3. Add/remove/modify repeats (e.g., "In Song #1, make mm. 22-24 a vamp"). 4. Force page turns. 5. Choose cue setups (e.g., "Reed 4 music: Song #1 goes into the synth part; Song #2 into the Reed 3 part; ..."). I'm sure there are other potential/desirable mods I'm not thinking of right now, but that's a good place to start this thread... What I'm looking for are some "best practices" for how this might be set up -- first from a technological standpoint (e.g., how to configure such a server), and second from a Lily-code standpoint (e.g., how to write code that would allow "in-line" modifications of the volta structures).
