You might want to have a look at this ABC search engine:

mac os x, lilypondtool, jedit, a puzzle

2008-05-03 Thread Stan Sanderson

In the interest of improving a great tool, I ask...

I'm sure I'm not the only one using jEdit with LilyPondTool on Mac OS
10 (10.4.11, PPC). I've had a dialogue with Bertalan Fodor (author of
LilyPondTool) concerning its use on the Mac OS. He doesn't have
access to a Mac and consequently finds answering my question difficult.

So, is there anyone using the Mac version of LilyPondTool who has
found a way of successfully invoking convert-ly?

The problem appears to be related to differences in how the Mac and
Windows versions use Python. From what Bertalan has suggested,
LilyPondTool translates "convert-ly" to "/
convert-ly.py --edit ".

From the jEdit Activity Log...

9:36:26 AM [notice] AWT-EventQueue-0: '/Users/ssanders/Desktop/test1.ly'
9:36:26 AM [notice] AWT-EventQueue-0: command: convert-ly
[Ljava.lang.String;@98ba6f
9:36:26 AM [error] AWT-EventQueue-0: java.io.IOException: /
Applications/LilyPond.app/Contents/Resources/bin//python: not found
9:36:26 AM [error] AWT-EventQueue-0: at
java.lang.UNIXProcess.forkAndExec(Native Method)

The same results are observed if the .py suuffix is included on the
convert-ly command.

I can invoke "lilypond --version" successfully from the jEdit Console
so the path to Lilypond appears to be correct. Invoking "convert-ly --
version" (or convert-ly.py" produces an error message.

I have not found a way to communicate with the contents of /
Applications/LilyPond.app/Contents/Resources/bin/ (other than
lilypond itself) when using LilyPondTool.

Any solutions?

These kind of errors annoy me to death since I'm using a Mac.
Lily, LaTeX, several compilers; everything complains about the
typographic whitespace characters which are simple to type in on a Mac.
Haven't figured out all the keystrokes, but as far as I know, you can
type non-breaking spaces, en and em-spaces, and may be others (line
breaks?) with great ease. Of course, all of them are specified in UTF
and, thus, wrote as such into plain text files, and you can't
distinguish them in most editors, especially using a monospace font.

I don't see hope for LaTeX fixing this in the short term; but since at
least Lilypond is made to deal with Unicode, it would be nice if those
characters could be handled by the parser as what they are - whitespaces.

For the meantime - anybody knows how to convince Smultron to mark those
characters? Or, even better - is there a program which temporarily shuts
off typographic character shortcuts for the whole system?

rhythmicStaff in instrumental score How?

But I'm stumped as how to make the code for the single lines- I wasn't going to

TextWrangler at least can show such "invisible characters" - and is
great in converting encodings.

Fwd: Re: Adding notes above drumstaff

2008-05-03 Thread Tao Cumplido
Hi,

I solved this for me to define my own drumcontext.
There's a part in the docs where it is described but it didn't work for me to
define a new drumcontext directly in my ly-file, so I looked into the file
drumpitch-init.ly (which is part of the LilyPond installation) to see how
drumcontexts are defined there.
Then I copied the whole file, added my own drumcontext and include in my
ly-file.
If you have created your own style-table you can create a DrumStaff with it
like this:

\new DrumStaff \with { drumStyleTable = #your-style }

Repeating title

What's the problem with LaTeX? You simply say

  \usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}

and most of those typographic spaces are automatically mapped to the
right LaTeX entities. Otherwise, simply use \DeclareUnicodeCharacter
and define something for it.

Dear James,

Actually I was wondering, once we set the time signature and choose which
value our notes will be (half, quart, eighth) -does the program
automatically create the desired bars?
The appropriate measures?
I assume it does after that input.

Also I need help fetching a "vertical squiggly line" and an "upside-down
fermatta" within http://home.earthlink.net/~markdlew/shw/DannyBoy.htm Mark
Lews adapt.

Lastly,

I was perusing the template(s) for piano and voice.
I wonder how that looks when done?
Do I just load up all the lyrics I have already within the "voice" section?

I expect that section to be pretty disproportionate compared to the
remaining few sections left in the template provided.

Also, Kieren MacMillans help has held its own, so, I'm ok with the
'horizontal spacing" issue from yesteryear.

Thank-you James.

It seems to work with .11 & .10. In fact, the results look better this
way than with \concat. The space between the left parenthesis and the

could be a small \hspace between the parenthesis and the note. I
wouldn't have noticed it if you hadn't sent this version. :-)

I've been too busy to keep up with the lists. My solution is
slightly the reverse of this one which is to create simple tempo
commands to add to any markup used like this (with parentheses):

\markup{ Allegro \mm #"4" #"120" }

or (without parentheses):

\markup( Allegro con moto \MM #"2" #"132" }

The code (without breve's but easily modifiable to include them) is
in the attachment since I am on my Mac at the moment and I dcn't know
how to cut and paste from XDarwin to the Mac GUI.

mm.ly
Description: Binary data

I'll see if I can make the breve mod and create a snippet.

It seems to work with .11 & .10. In fact, the results look better
this

way than with \concat. The space between the left parenthesis and the
note head is better matched with the space between the number and the
right parenthesis. If I may pick a nit a bit - with \concat there
could be a small \hspace between the parenthesis and the note. I
wouldn't have noticed it if you hadn't sent this version. :-)

I've been too busy to keep up with the lists. My solution is
slightly the reverse of this one which is to create simple tempo
commands to add to any markup used like this (with parentheses):

\markup{ Allegro \mm #"4" #"120" }

or (without parentheses):

\markup( Allegro con moto \MM #"2" #"132" }

Looking at the definition of "movement" in the LSR I see that the
tempo must be a number. If it is a string then one can use
variations like "ca. 120" to indicate approximate tempos, etc.

Re: mac os x, lilypondtool, jedit, a puzzle

2008-05-03 Thread Jonathan Kulp
I haven't tried to update any files from Jedit on my Mac. I have run
the "update syntax" command from the "Compile" menu that appears when
you open Lilypond as an application. Does that accomplish the same
thing as convert-ly? I do all of my lilypond editing on Linux so I
haven't tried much besides opening and compiling files on the Mac.
After getting this message I tried running the "convert-ly" command on a
file from a Mac terminal and it failed saying unknown command or
something. The editor window that opens by default when you run
Lilypond on a mac is pretty bad, though, so I can see why you'd want to
use Jedit instead. My own solution would be to update the syntax in
lilypond, save the file, and then do further editing in Jedit.

update syntax is the same as convert-ly on macintosh. Is the solution
to just not use jedit? Again, I use TeXShop for lilypond, so I don't
know much about jedit, but I can sure give it a try later today.

Kinda. Assuming all of your bars are compete, then you'll have no
problems. What makes lilypond good is that it does all of the layout,
you just tell it what you want. If, however, you have \time 4/4 d'4
d'4 e'2. | or \time 4/4 d'4 d'2 | Lilypond will have problems, and the
more I think about it it, the more I like that.

That's a common musical symbol for harpists and keyboard players,
arpeggio. you get that by adding \arpeggio to a chord. See section
1.3.3.2 of the 2.11 documentation.

Lastly,

I was perusing the template(s) for piano and voice.
I wonder how that looks when done?
Do I just load up all the lyrics I have already within the "voice"
section?

There are several ways of adding lyrics. for a simple song like this,
probably the easiest way would be to first make sure the vocal part
has all of the ties, "~" and slurs, "( )" needed to make sure all of
the syllables that are sung over more than one written note are
grouped together. e.g., cal -- ling in mm. 7 needs to be fis'8( e'8)
cis'4~ cis'8. so that you can use the simple \addlyrics function
directly after your music in your lilypond file. For example \score
{ {fis'8( e'8) cis'4~ cis'8 e'8 gis'8 a'8} \addlyrics {cal -- ling
from glen to} } would give you mm. 7

I expect that section to be pretty disproportionate compared to the
remaining few sections left in the template provided.

Also, Kieren MacMillans help has held its own, so, I'm ok with the
'horizontal spacing" issue from yesteryear.

Thank-you James.

-Jay Peek

I would also suggest using the 2.11 documentation if you aren't
already, it's a bit easier to read, certainly more thorough, and makes
using lilypond a lot clearer.
