Let me ask my question a different way.
Suppose I have a 'Fine' and a rehearsal mark '\markup{\box{"C"}}'
occurring at the same bar line. If the bar line comes in the middle of
a line, I want the two marks printed together, consecutively. If the
bar line comes at the end of a line, I want 'Fine' at the end of the
first line, and '\markup{\box{"C"}}' at the beginning of the next
line.
What is the right way to do it?
This situation occurs very often. It happens in a large fraction of
the big band charts I've seen, for example.

One method is to typeset the text as a text script instead of using \mark:

I like this suggestion, but unfortunately it seems to demonstrate
another bug. The chords move out of the way regardless of whether they
would collide with the text script. The result is a bunch of ugly,
unnecessary blank space. Thanks for the tip, though.
That's also solve in the latest development versions.

I think that the whole \mark thing should be rethought by the developers. There should be a way to place markup-s in certain places: - only top staff - aligned to the end/beginning of measure/line/next line. If you browse the bug-lilypond and lilypond-devel mailing list archives over the last weeks, you will see that there still are some issues related to the new spacing mechanism, but you will also see that most problems that are reported are fixed within a few days. Note that in general, the development version can have some severe problems, so what I wrote above is about todays status. I also don't like the idea using RehearsalMarks just because TextScripts can not be aligned as you wish. I generally want to RehearsalMarks as they are now (for things like \mark "A"}, but there are some places in the same score when I want to put some scripts aligned to the end of the measure. liturgix and other packages and settings that shouldn't affect the result.

Thank you Robert and Werner. Werner's suggestion led me to compare the convert-ly scripts in a copy of 2.10.13 and 2.10.15. The path for MacOS is LilyPond.app -> Contents -> Resources -> bin -> convert-ly . reference manual, examples and MIDI
Hello! I am new to the world of Lilypond. I have to say that I am fascinated by the beautiful output it produces. But it's also a very complex program and I find myself confused many times. I am working with version 2.10.14 I would like to know if someone can help me with the following. While reading the Manual I find references to elements I am not sure what or where they are. In particular, I have some problems with the following: When the manual says "See Program Reference" (for example, See Program Reference TimeScaleMusic), What does it mean? RSS/Atom feed for new releases?
Hello all, Is there any RSS (or Atom) feed currently set up to track new releases? I try to keep up with the latest stable release of LilyPond, but in order to do so I have to visit the website periodically, which I can never remember to do. I took a look at the git page, and there seems to be feeds on most of the pages, but I'm not sure which one I would need to subscribe to in order to be notified of new releases. Problems with LilyPond 2.11.15
Hi there!
I'm sorry if this is not the exact place to post this kind of issues... if
that is the case, please redirect me to the right place.
Anyway, here it goes. Up to this morning, I've been using version 2.11.14
without any problem. Today I decided to download and install the brand new
2.11.15. And here's where my problems began... I tried converting a file
from within jEdit... no way. No big deal... I opened a comand prompt and did
it manually from there. The result does not seem to be any different from
what I've already typed. Anyway, I went back to jEdit and ran lilypond over
the file. Everything went fine until the program tried to make the final pdf
file... it could not. Here's the resulting output:

Err, this is a trickier (and much nastier!) one. I'll fix this one the weekend... for now just ignore all the "input/regression/" info. If it says "input/test/" then look at "Tips and Tricks" on the above page. Lasatly, how do you invoke the midi 2 ly command. I read the manual but am unsure. Do I include the 3 dots? Will there be a new file? Where will I find it? You need to use the command line of your operating system. For OSX, this is called the "terminal". For Windows, it's called "dos shell" or "command shell" or something like that. Please consult documentation for your operating system for help with this. You'd better browse the HTML version, which is far more convenient and has many extra hypertext features. Look, for instance, at http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.10/Documentation/ you'll see every documentation resources you may need. The Program Reference (the link is in the right column) is, however, a rather advanced piece, which you probably won't require before a while. As LilyPond is free software, everyone can contribute to its developement and therefore, the documentation is half user- , half developer-oriented. For a standard human being like you and me (i.e. non a martian-god-coder-whatever...), the Tutorial (which has recently been rewritten by Graham Percival) and the User Manual are good places to start. There are, as far as I know, three kinds of examples in LilyPond documentation. The first kind is the short (simple) examples you can find in the Tutorial or the Manual. They come as small PNG images, which you can click on; if you do, you'll see the exact .ly input file which has been used to produce this example. Those examples are easily pastable in your own LilyPond files, to see how it works. The second kind is the link "examples" on the page I just mentioned. These are full samples, beautiful scores by "real" composers, just to show you what LilyPond can produce. The last kind are the "examples" or "example files" links in the manual. These are the examples you were talking about. As a matter of fact, these pages are "regression tests", which give the coders the ability to check if LilyPond new versions are compatible with each features of the previous ones. make-dynamic-script shows mysterious aligning behaviour
Hi at all,
(using version 2.10.14)
make-dynamic-script is a nice feature, but there seems to be a bug, from
which I don't know, wether it is a lilypond bug or a font bug or
something like that:
If You have a crescendoText and then an own dynamic with normal text,
the dynamic will not align exactly with the crescendoText.
To make it more complicated, there is not the same behaviour
for all characters!
In the following I've listed the lower case characters, which show a
different behaviour (
1. with "?" they are aligned about .4 or .5 staff spaces
too high,
2. with "." they are aligned about .1 or .2 staff spaces too low,
3. and the one with "-" [t] is aligned about only .1 or .2 staff
spaces too high,
whereas all upper cases seem to align wrong in the same way,
about .1 or .2 staff spaces too low.

And to make it much more complicated (and this might be the reason, why
this bug is difficult to find), the much too high aligning lower cases

character together with them, which aligns a bit too low (bdfhijkl), in
which case all is only aligned a bit too low and not so easy to see.
In the attached minimal example file there is the new own dynamic "aa",
which aligns obviously too high, and removing it with ab, You can hardly
see the little bit too low aligning ...
I would like to read some comments to this.

Thank you, Roger. I'm aware of the apparent problems with the (de)crescendo
hairpins, but those did not seem to bother the previous version. The real
problem seems to lie way down, when lilypond tries to write a pdf file from
the ps output...

Moving markup box above chord names in a leadsheet?
In making lead sheets, I would like to have the part indication box 'c4^
\markup {\box {chorus}}' appear above the chord-names instead of between
staff and chord names. I've been searching for hours after a solution
but to no avail. Any suggestions?
As a new Lilypond user I wonder why the note length specifying logic is
not extended to tuplets also; ie. in addition to 1 2 4 8 ... you would
have the tuplets 3 6 12 ... 20 40 ... and so on? It seems a litter
overkill to use the \times command on simple triplets.

like this (view it with a monospaced font to see the logic of the
formatting):

above the staff. The text between < and > can be anything. It will be
attached as a '\markup' to the nearest note on the melody line below. In
this case it will be attached to the 'g4'. The syllables in the lyrics
may be separeted with any number (>0) of '-':s.
This format makes it a lot easier (at least for me) to keep track of
where I'm going. The program Lilylead parses this file and feeds it to
Lilypond. Anyone iterested can get it from me (opensource ;o)

Hi Ole,
edge-text went away in 2.11.15 and is now replaced by two separate
constructions, one for the left edge and one for the right edge.
Try reading about convert-ly in the manual and run convert-ly on a
file with \version "2.11.1" at the top. The conversion script will
then spit out the correct new syntax for you to see.

I just ran your file using LilyPond 2.11.15. While there were a
number of warnings, the processing completed successfully and the pdf
looks good. Now, if I could only play Torroba.
I'm using a Mac w/ OS 10.4.8. I posted earlier today about my
experience with convert-ly being broken and what I did to correct it.
It appears that the "cure" depends on your platform or requires
waiting for the next update.

It appears that the pair \< \! is not voiced correctly, if I read
the warning well. If \! of line 163 is instead also attached to
the lower voice at the same time (i.e. first note of line 164) ,
this warning disappears:

Thank you very much, Stan. I managed to run the file with version 2.10.15 without problems (except for those warnings)... I'll try to solve those little "hicups" and see if I can manually convert it to 2.11.15. For the time being, I have to stick to the Win version... I look forward to having a Linux box again. And yes, Moreno Torroba was a fantastic composer... this is one of his most lyrical pieces. If you still don't have it, try to get David Russel's recording of "Castles of Spain." 'gs' is not recognized as a... v2.11.15
Ijust installed 2.11.15 on Windows XP. I get the following right at the
point that LP is converting the ps file to pdf. In the end I get a ps file
but no pdf. Is there some setup of the system PATH statement that needs to
be made so that gs is recognized? The path to the lilypond bin is in my
PATH statement. Here is the run log:

Isn't gs supposed to have an extention like .exe?
v2.11.15 Looking at the folder "C:\Program Files\LilyPond\usr\bin" where lilypond is installed, it appears that the executeable called "gs" does not have a .exe extension. How is the operating system suppoed to know that this is an executeable file (I presume its ghostsscript)? When compilinmg with v2.11.15, at the point where lily is writing the ps to pdf, it complains that gs is not a recognized command.
