RE: Very basic problem with manual beaming
Hi! Many thanks for the help -- I understand the logic of beaming now :=) In fact, after spending nearly a whole day with Lilypond I am pleased to say that I have mastered quite a lot of the basics and have already attempted such esoteric arts as context tweaking (to add titles to an 'alternative' volta bracket) with great success. FYI: I am using the Studio to Go! package from Fervent software, which comes with Lilypond 2.6 currently. Using RoseGarden, I have exported a simple piece of music, and would now like to tidy up just one or two bars. These bars are 7/8 bars, and I need an alternative beaming structure. Output from RoseGarden: \time 7/8 c'' 16 d'' d'' a' d'' d'' c'' d'' d'' d'' e'' d'' e'' fis'' What I (think) I need, following the manual: \time 7/8 [c'' 16 d'' d''] [a' d'' d''] [c'' d'' d'' d''] [e'' d'' e'' fis''] However, when I run this (and the rest of the score) through lilypond, it exits with the following error: ClassicReelSet.ly:77:16: error: syntax error, unexpected '[' [c'' 16 d'' d''] [a' d'' d''] [c'' d'' d'' d''] [e'' d'' e'' fis''] ClassicReelSet.ly:13:4: error: errors found, ignoring music expression Why is this "unexpected"? Isn't this how to do manual beaming? Note that this section is properly enclosed in a \context Voice = "voice 0" { .. } % Voice tag, so I don't think that that is the problem. LilyPond related blogs?
Hi, I was wondering whether some LilyPond users were blogging about their use of LilyPond. It's usually nice to discover some useful tips about LilyPond on the mailing lists, but if some people also write about what they find out in some other places, pointers would be appreciated. nicolas ___ lilypond-user mailing list lilypond-user@gnu.org http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-user

Maybe the easiest solution to this is to use the lilypond rpms that are now included in Fedora Extras. The current version is 2.8.3, but I'll probably be updating to 2.8.4 soon. I have successfully used them with SELinux enabled. By using the Fedora rpms, you will get an older version of ghostscript (8.15 instead of 8.50), but in most cases it should be adequate. [TIP/TRICK] a function to shift a tuplet
Hello, all -- Sometimes (though not very often!), Lilypond puts a tuplet in the wrong place, and you need to shift it up or down (or, I suppose, left and right!?). Since it actually requires two shifts -- one each for the TupletBracket and TupletNumber -- I've written a simple function to encapsulate the whole tweak. The function and an example is included, below. Enjoy! Kieren. % CODE SNIPPET BEGINS \version "2.9.7" tupletShift = #(define-music-function (parser location shift) (pair?) #{ \once \override TupletBracket #'extra-offset = $shift \once \override TupletNumber #'extra-offset = $shift #}) \relative c' { \time 4/2 \times 2/3 { c4 c c } \tupletShift #'( 0 . 4 ) \times 2/3 { c4 c c } % up 4 spaces \tupletShift #'( -2 . 2 ) \times 2/3 { c4 c c } % left 2 spaces, up 2 spaces \times 2/3 { c4 c c } % \once in the function means subsequent tuplets 'revert' } % CODE SNIPPET ENDS ___ lilypond-user mailing list lilypond-user@gnu.org http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-user
long glissando with rhythm question
Hi everyone, I am trying to create glissandos that take place over longer periods of time where rhythmic events take place during the glissando. turn \RemoveEmptyStaffContext on and off?
[ Lilypond 2.9.7 ] Hello, all! Just wondering if \RemoveEmptyStaffContext can be turned on and off at will? [The only thing I know about is \context { \RemoveEmptyStaffContext}, which seems to be "global" for the entire duration of the \score.] The situation I find myself in is this... The conductor I'm working with doesn't *really* like Frenched scores -- if an instrument is ever going to play in a given movement, he would like it to appear (with rests) in all systems for the entire movement. The exception we've already run into is that there is a large section of one movement where the two vocalists sing cappella for about seven systems, and then the band comes in for the last few measures. We'd like to hide the 8 empty staves (4 for the linear instruments, plus 2 each for piano and reduction) if possible. In other words, what I would like to do is French score the movement only leading up to the system containing the entrance of the instrumentalists, then *NOT* have the score Frenched for the remainder of the movement. What's the easiest way to do this? Can I override some Score variable at "just the right moment"? Or do I need to explicitly code a \startStaff in each instrument/ Staff? If I do, is there an automatic way to ensure that all of those started staves extend back to the beginning of the system they start in (because that particular measure might not be at the beginning of the system, depending on the layout), or do I have to change that for each edition/layout? Thanks, Kieren. ___ lilypond-user mailing list lilypond-user@gnu.org http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-user
