I want to put a markup
  \markup { \center-align {\italic "D.C." \italic "al Fine" } }
under or over the last barline of the piece. How do I do that?

Unfortunately it doesn't work.  In lilypond, \strut "Create a box of 
the same height as

the space in the current font".

Hmm... is there an easy way to print an invisible letter?  ie something 
like

c'4^\markup{ foo \hideLetter g }

I know how I could make an entire textscript invisible, but I don't 
know how to

make a single invisible letter.

  \once \override Score.RehearsalMark #'self-alignment-X = #right
 \mark "D.S. al Fine "
generate the error:
 Processing `/Users/foo/Music/LilyPond/RachenitsaB.ly'
Parsing...: In expression ’self-alignment-X:
: Unbound variable: ’self-alignment-X

But if I ignore what the manual says, I can get it printed over the  
last barline. Confusing, though.


How do I get it printed under the barline?

2.4.5 isn't that old.  Some of us haven't really managed a working
version of 2.6 yet.  And most of what good things I've heard about 2.6
from the people who have one wouldn't really affect this score.  That
being said, of course it would have been better if the poster had
posted the source so that someone with a newer version could have
easily converted it (if it's something the converter bothers with) and
demonstrated the latest and greatest.

slurs and brackets

hi everybody,i just discovered this great piece of software yesterday and i am really amazed by its functionality and engraving beauty. i quickly decided to use this software for my work instead of sibelius or finale, which are way too clumsy to use for my taste.Right now i'm working on a music-theory book for my university and i could quickly do most of the things i wanted to with lilypond.Still i have some questions:- i want to show the half tones between e and f,  b and c: i would like to use a V shaped slur for that (right now it's just a simple slur), is there a command i have overseen to generate such a shape. i tried some markup commands but that didn't yield the results i wanted.- is there a way to put the analysis brackets below and above the notes (depending on the situation). I had originally tried to install 2.6, but my system is not the absolutely 
last-cry Linux, and after having reached a point where library version 
requirements would have forced me to upgrade my XFree (!), I decided to 
content myself with 2.4 - I can't afford to mess around too much with my 
box at the moment.
The developers will have good reasons for requiring brand-new versions of 
several auxiliary libraries and tools, but the downside might be that 
some people have to stay behind a bit and that it can be difficult to get 
the latest-and-greatest version of Lilypond running. However, I guess for 
an absolute newbie like me, 2.4 will be just as good - and then, Lilypond 
comes with an upgrade tool, as it seems.

bug.  I just

you copy the whole example?

I think that you'd need to use a text script for that, but you should 
be able to

use a similar trick to right-align the text script.

See chapter 9 for info on how to do this kind of fancier stuff.

Hmm... did you try using analysis brackets?  If you tweak the
bracket-flare option, you might be able to get something that's closer 
to what you want

than a slur.

For details about tweaking that option, see chapter 9 Changing defaults.

Depends what you mean by "depending on the situation" -- you can 
manually

specify the direction.

Thanks for the info. I think though that it is not uncommon to have  
D.C. and D.S. under the barline. For example, "Tico-Tico" by Abreu  
puts "D.S. al Fine" in columns under the barline, and the sign above  
the it. Hindemith, "Elementary Training", also puts it below (though  
not directly under the barline).

actually, my intention is that 2.7 releases (but not CVS) should be 
quite usable. It might be that bug appear and disappear between 
versions, but that is only natural for software in development. I don't 
release a new 2.7 if I can't build the website. In general 2.7 also 
works for input/les-nereides.ly and input/typography-demo.ly , as these 
have become my standard tests.

think it is a poor man's substitute for the real thing, which is 
automatic formatting.


I think that it should be possible to automate it, and I would gladly 
work on this as a sponsored feature. It would be a somewhat bigger 
feature (perhaps 800 eur, I'm not sure yet), as the Tie formatting needs 
to be redone. I'll have a look this week what is involved. If there is a 
need for more sponsors, I can put up an announcement on lilypond.org.

I can look into implementing either as a sponsored features. However, 
you can fake the 2nd by adding an invisible voice (see the manual for 
hiding notes) with analysis bracks.

question à propos de LilyPond

Bonjour,

je viens de découvrir LilyPond et je m'entraine à l'utiliser.
Il me semble qu'il serait plus simple à utiliser avec un
logiciel de traitement de texte tel que "Context" par exemple
qui permet de visualiser avec des couleurs les différents
caractères utilisés, dans différents langages de programmation
tels que C++ etc...
"Context" propose d'ailleurs une liste de langages de
programmation qu'il reconnait.
Existe t-il un tel logiciel qui reconnaitrait le langage
utilisé par lilypond pour coder une partition ?
J'espère que ma question est compréhensible... :-)

Lilypond Fonts

I've recently rebuilt my Linux system from scratch, and am still trying to 
get everything back to the way it was.  I use a mostly Kubuntu system, but 
am willing to add Debian Testing modules where necessary.


My Lilypond version is now 2.4.5 from Debian.  The actual music -- notes / 
staffs / etc -- looks great.  But the lyrics and headers look terrible.  
Almost like Lilypond is trying to use a font that I don't currently have on 
my system, so its subsituting an inferior one.


What font is Lilypond looking for by default for lyrics and headers?  Any 
idea what package Debian and Debian-based systems should have installed as a 
default?

character encoding problem with windows

I'm trying to update a piece that I typeset with the 2.4.0 cygwin
build. I decided to upgrade to the newest native windows version but
when I compile none of the special characters show up (Très modéré,
più, etc...). I get nothing instead of them. Is this a problem anyone
else has experienced? Is there something I'm missing? I've even tried
out the included examples and they don't work either. So far in my
searches I haven't found any documentation of this problem. Should I
just stick with the cygwin builds? Thanks for the help.

How 'bout quoting a sponsorship cost for each of the fixes in this 
first measure:







1. Ties between two notes spaced closely together on inner-staff lines: 
too tall.

2. Tempo indication notes (in \markup): flags not aligned correctly.
3. Slur-to-staccato on notes on the same line: slur starts too far from 
notehead.
4. Tempo indication: should be aligned with time signature (now \markup 
attached to note).

Thanks! That is quite a helpful investigation...

Surprisingly, Finale makes quite a good showing in this case -- 
certainly (to my eye) the least number of glaring problems of the 
non-Lilypond bunch. The two cases where it clearly trounces Lilypond 
(in this example) is the spacing between bars and music which begins 
with an accidental (q.v., m 2, 3, 6), and the tie-note padding (q.v., m 
1, 3, 5, 7, etc.).


For most things, however, Lilypond proved its superiority (to my eye) 
once again!

If my French is correct, he is asking for a text editor which utilizes  
context-sensitive coloring for Lilypond code, as many text editors  
(Context is his example) do with common programming languages.


Response:
I use Jedit with the lilytool plugin.  It recognizes Lilypond syntax and  
even includes templates and sample code for Lilypond.  It is mentioned in  
the Lilypond manual in section 5.7.  There are also use similar tools for  
Vim and Emacs.

My plaintext mail client is set for ISO-8859-1 (Latin 1), so spurious
apostrophes (') show up as the sequence  ^ ò   (but without the spaces I
inserted for clarity).  The tail end of the above error message looks like
this:
^ ò s e l f - a l i g n m e n t - X
which may indicate that the LilyPond parser does not see an apostrophe
(a "single-quote"), but rather a long unbound (i.e., undefined) variable
name beginning with the two characters  ^ ò

You might want to look at your actual source file in an ASCII-only text
editor to see whether the apostrophe (') is a real ASCII apostrophe or if
it's some unicode character.
