Increasing space between notes?
The three bars in the example below illustrate a problem in the middle of a piece I'm transcribing. The composer has written sfz followed by a diminuendo onto the following note, but lilypond does not make enough horizontal space for the ">" diminuendo. Bar 1 illustrates that problem. Bar 2 illustrates my work-round to force enough space for the dim. Unfortunately, the work-round does not solve a similar problem (bar 3) where the diminuendo ends on a rest rather than a note. I've tried too many different things to remember, let alone describe here. Please help! -- Graham \version "2.4.1" \paper { raggedright = ##t } \context Staff { \time 4/4 % This bar gives "warning: decrescendo too small" : a'2->\sfz\> g'4--\p f'-- % The next bar is kludged to make enough space for the dim.: << {a'2->\sfz\> g'4--\p f'--}\\{\hideNotes g'4 g'4 g'2}>> % But the kludge does not work for this bar: a'2->\sfz\> r2\p } ___ lilypond-user mailing list lilypond-user@gnu.org http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-user
Upgrade problems from 2.5.8 to anything higher
Hello all -- I've been trying to keep up with the latest development versions, but I've run into a problem that's keeping me stuck at 2.5.8. First of all, I'm running a fully-up-to-date Gentoo box, with AFPL Ghostscript 8.15. I've been able to use lilypond 2.5.8 just great, and I'm able to compile newer versions; but when I try to use them, the noteheads, clefs etc. in the output are all in Courier, i.e. Ghostscript isn't finding the Feta/Parmesan/Emmentaler fonts. I've tried compiling on another machine and it works great there (with correct output); and I've packaged up the binary and installed it on this machine, but the output is still messed up. There must be some old cruft sitting around on my machine gumming up the works, but I'm pulling my hair out trying to find it. I've run the clean-fonts script, and carefully removed everything from /usr/share/lilypond, /usr/lib/lilypond and /usr/share/omf/lilypond between build attempts. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this problem? I've pretty much ruled out fontforge and mftrace since these are invoked only during compile time, not runtime. --Daniel ___ lilypond-user mailing list lilypond-user@gnu.org http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-user

Re: Documentation Issues

If so, should you be specifically included whenever such issues arise? Should any suggestions/contributions be sent to you as well as the list? (Such a policy might make it easier to track documentation issues so that they don't get lost in the noise of a busy list.) Sorry, I should have included my title. I'm the Documentation Editor. I (aim to) act as the translator between users and the docs. You can tell me (in English) what needs to change in the docs, and I'll go and put those changes in the source code. I may also edit your submission for correct English (there's a lot of non-native English speakers involved in LilyPond). When there's a lack of specific requests to respond to (ie "section 5.1234.5 should say something about foo" instead of "in section 5.1234.5, please add these sentences and this example"), I write docs. But this occurs much slower than responding to specific requests. I wouldn't mind being specifically CC'd (just to make sure), but I read lilypond-user and lilypond-devel so it's not strictly necessary. Technically I think that specific suggestions should be sent to bug-lilypond, but since documentation is something that all users can easily contribute to, I think it could be useful to send them to -user. Hmm. That didn't really clear it up, did it? OK, let's say this: if you have a small, specific issue ("in section 5.4.2, please add this example: { blah blah << blah foo >> } then please send it to bug-lilypond. If you have a larger issue you'd like to discuss, then please send it to lilypond-user and lilypond-devel. "The name of an identifier should have alphabetic characters only; no numbers, underscores or dashes. The assignment should be outside of running music." OK, so now the question is "is this the best place / should this be the only place for this info?" I don't think so; IMO nothing should only be documented in the tutorial. Normally I'd ask for suggestions for another place to put this info, but I'm already planning a revised chapter for global lilypond file issues. We should have a section about "Relevant features/limitations". I'm not certain if the intro is the best place for it -- maybe somewhere in chapter 7 or 8 would be better? -- but we can work that out later. Now what should I include in such a section? Manual page break between movements
Hello ! I am now using Lilypond 2.4.2 on Cygwin. Still very enthousiastic with this excellent piece of software. I have a piece that has multiple movements. Because of page turning problems, I would like to include a manual page break between 2 of the movements (not before all movements). Is it possible without using lilypond-book? With previous releases, I used the Latex code for page break (\\newpage) directly in the movement title (\header { piece = "\\newpage..." }) but it doesn't work any more. Figured Bass Improvements
Good Afternoon, I started using lilypond a couple of months ago but soon had to abandon it because of its weak figured bass support. I've been following the developments for a while in hope that the support for figured bass would be strengthened. At this stage I have seen no sign of this. Is it ever going to be improved? The rest of the program is excellent especially for the support of "ancient" notation, but with the lack of figured bass support it is severely let down when using older notations. Any comments / hints of further development appreciated. Regards, Trent ___ lilypond-user mailing list lilypond-user@gnu.org http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-user
String numbers in circles
Can anyone tell me how to achieve numbers in circles? I used to be able to get this to work on 2.1.x: ces^\markup {"\\textcircled{\\tiny 1}"} I think I got this from David Raleigh Arnold in a previous post. It no longer works under 2.4.2. It gives the circle but no number inside of it. I ran an old file through convert-ly and examined it to find that it did not change the syntax. The new file ran without warnings but the generated file gave the same result as described above; circle with no number. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
