Make sure that the files lilypond.map and feta20.pfa are installed and belong to the 2.0.0 installation. Also, make sure that the teTeX filename database is up to date by running 'texhash' as root. Re: Landscape from Lilypond 2.0.1 on Cygwin
Unfortunately, LilyPond itself doesn't realize what is should do with the line width if you have set orientation="landscape", so you have to do it manually: \include "paper16.ly" \paper{ orientation = "landscape" linewidth=27.0 \cm } (Note that you have to set linewidth after you have included paperNN.ly, otherwise it will be reset to the default for the paper size.) The resulting PDF file should display in the correct orientation but if you view the PS file with gv or GSView, it may cut of the lines unless you set it to display in Landscape (i.e. rotated 90°). Mats J. Daniel Ashton wrote: Hello friends, I'm going through the usual head-banging trying to get landscape output. Re: Insert arbitrary graphical symbols
There are several possibilities. The simplest is probably to include TeX commands as text scripts, see http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.0/input/test/out-www/collated-files.html#embedded-tex.ly To get the correct position, you could play with the extra-offset property (search the mailing list archives). It should also be possible to replace ordinary accidentals with your own symbols by setting properties of the Accidental object, see http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.0/Documentation/user/out-www/lilypond-internals/Accidental.html but I don't know how tricky it is. It's probably much easier if you have the symbols available in a font than in .eps graphics files. I read a bit about \embeddedps: is this the appropriate means for my purpose? Docs suggestion
I'd like to see a new section in the fine manual: How-Tos. In specific, I'm looking for something like "How to adjust the 'margins' on output (see linewidth, place it _after_ the \include paper16.ly)." Or "How to move the lyrics closer to the notes." Or "How to make the lyrics line up with the first note of each melisma." Some of this same material exists as comments or implications in the regression tests. Some of it doesn't. As a late-night frustrated user, I'd like a place in the manual that showed extremely brief but complete examples, preferrably accurate with the current version of the software. Someone asked recently for Docs suggestions and criticisms, so there's my two cents worth. I go to the docs, particularly the PDF file, for everything. When I fail to find something there I turn to the regression tests and other .ly files littering the installation directory. My feeling is that new users have terminology problems (the docs could help somewhat). For example, Margin is found in relation only to TeX and LaTex files: nothing ties it to linewidth. In the last two revisions Lilypond docs have added some excellent, very readable explanatory material. I really like the new versions of the first two chapters. But as someone who's operating under an intense time constraint, I also need a How-To section, which should embody the FAQs, the examples and samples, the regression tests, and a How-To spin on each of the remaining document sections. Short but complete examples are intensely useful. -- Daniel Ashton PGP key available http://Daniel.AshtonFam.org mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://ChamberMusicWeekend.org mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] ICQ# 9445142 http://ZephyrBrass.com ___ Lilypond-user mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://mail.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-user

Re: Docs suggestion
In principle, I agree! However, I also have some comments: - You didn't mention two other excellent sources of information: * The "Tips and tricks" document. * The mailing list archives. - There are thousands of different things you can do with LilyPond that are not explained with a separate example in the manual. It's very difficult to know what to include, but one of the best ways to find out what is missing is to look at the questions to this mailing list. I know that Han-Wen and Jan struggle hard to remove not only bugs but all kind of limitations and problems that pop up on the mailing lists, still it would be great if someone had the time to collect a How-To or FAQ. We have discussed it several time on the list and even had a FAQ on the web using wiki-wiki technique so that anybody could update it. One of the main problems actually turned out to keep it up to date, the same problem as any other kind of documentation. So, in the end it boils down to finding one or more persons who have the time and ambition to maintain such a document. - The specific issues you mention, are described in the "Global layout" section of the manual (in more or less detail). The first step, instead of creating a new How-To document, is to clarify the text of the existing manual. Here it's very easy for you and everybody else to make a contribution, just send suggestions for reformulations of the text to bug-lilypond. Mats J. Daniel Ashton wrote: I'd like to see a new section in the fine manual: How-Tos. -- = Mats Bengtsson Signal Processing Signals, Sensors and Systems Royal Institute of Technology SE-100 44 STOCKHOLM Sweden Phone: (+46) 8 790 8463 Fax: (+46) 8 790 7260 Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] WWW: http://www.s3.kth.se/~mabe = ___ Lilypond-user mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://mail.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-user

Doable, except that I'm not familiar with any PDF reader under Windows, Cygwin or Linux that will save the file as having been rotated. Jumping from Mats earlier reply, I've taken to re-running ps2pdf under Linux. I run lilypond under Cygwin, then switch to Linux and re-run ps2pdf directly, which generates a PDf file in the orientation I expect. This is an editing task, and the developers don't like the idea of user variables, for fear it may result in preprocessing. Also, you want a finished product so you can add fingering, etc., when you have finished the notes. You will find something close in ptfilter.txt, specifically substitute.sed. Change the <> to [] though, because of the change in lilypond chord syntax. You want one measure on each line in your infile. (Artificial) harmonics
I am newcomer to Lilypond, and I like what I see - which to date is only very little. Almost immediately I ran into a problem: artificial harmonics (cello music; the problem is the same for all string instruments, of course). The solution to that problem came through interaction with Lilypond from A. Beneteau, who sent me the follwowing exxample: --- \score { \notes \new Staff { << { \property Voice.NoteHead \set #'style = #'harmonic g'} \\ {c'4} >> } } Note very obvious, nor short to type, but this is the idea --- This indeed works. But, I don't think the solution is worthy of Lilypond: the noteheads are really just a little too small and the entry is much more cumbersome than necessary, I would think. For an example, see the attached extract from S. Saens' 3rd violin concerto: it is clear that the diamond-shaped heads actually cross the staff lines when the note is between the lines! My desire would be to have a syntax like the following (but not necessarily this; anything else that fits better with the Lilypond style is fine, of course): c\ahfor artificial harmonics, in which case Lilypond would automatically create the two noteheads that represent this in printed music: the lower, regular note at the pitch specified, and an open, diamond shaped one a fourth above it (see attached); for the very rare case that a different interval is used, an additional modifier could be used; d\nhfor natural harmonics, where only the diamond shaped head is printed at the specified pitch. project management revisited
Hi all, a while ago I asked advise on versioning for a notation project. The answer was CVS. I asked my webhost if I could install it and they gave me shell access. I have no idea however what I am doing, I read the help files and can't figure out how to use it. They all say make a Repoistory directory, which I did. All empty. Do I create a directory structure for the files or does Cvs. I realize that this is the wrong list to ask but I can't see myself subscribing to yet another mailing list.. I am subscribed to at least 10 already. Must I add files now or can I add them later. Since it is not a software project it must be different somehow, hmm, just confused. If anyone of list could help me with this I would most appreciate it. Thanks Aaron ___ Lilypond-user mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://mail.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-user
