For me it seems that the lyrics engraver is not good at typography. I
was informed that it was contributed by someone who has disappeared
since he worked on it. So it's working, but not really good.

Perhaps some day someone else can get to the lyrics issue.

Re: Help with fonts

2003-10-07 Thread Mats Bengtsson
Make sure that the files lilypond.map and feta20.pfa are installed and
belong to the 2.0.0 installation. Also, make sure that the teTeX
filename database is up to date by running 'texhash' as root.
To find out where dvips finds the files, run the following commands:
kpsewhich --format='dvips config' lilypond.map
kpsewhich feta20.pfa
Both should return the full path to the corresponding file.

Re: Landscape from Lilypond 2.0.1 on Cygwin

2003-10-07 Thread Mats Bengtsson
Unfortunately, LilyPond itself doesn't realize what is should do with
the line width if you have set orientation="landscape", so you have to
do it manually:
\include "paper16.ly"
\paper{
  orientation = "landscape"
  linewidth=27.0 \cm
}
(Note that you have to set linewidth after you have included paperNN.ly,
otherwise it will be reset to the default for the paper size.)
The resulting PDF file should display in the correct orientation but
if you view the PS file with gv or GSView, it may cut of the lines
unless you set it to display in Landscape (i.e. rotated 90°).

I set orientation = "landscape" in the paper{} block. I get landscape

rotate the pages, but I'm going to feel foolish e-mailing upside-down

I seem to get no results with linewidth. The lines are always the

I'm attaching the .ly and .pdf files for your perusal. Perhaps this

Re: Insert arbitrary graphical symbols

2003-10-07 Thread Mats Bengtsson
There are several possibilities. The simplest is probably to
include TeX commands as text scripts, see
http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.0/input/test/out-www/collated-files.html#embedded-tex.ly
To get the correct position, you could play with the extra-offset
property (search the mailing list archives).
It should also be possible to replace ordinary accidentals with
your own symbols by setting properties of the Accidental object, see
http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.0/Documentation/user/out-www/lilypond-internals/Accidental.html
but I don't know how tricky it is. It's probably much easier if you
have the symbols available in a font than in .eps graphics files.

I would like to add some arbitrary graphical symbols into my score.
Particularly, I want to use some special accidentals for microtonal
music (I know that LilyPond meanwhile supports quarter-notes, but that
does not suit my purposes).
I read a bit about \embeddedps: is this the appropriate means for my
purpose? I wonder whether there is perhaps some other means which allows
to include, e.g., some arbitrary *.eps graphics in place of an
accidental.
Thank you very much!

Hi Bert,

I found your earlier messages on this topic before I wrote mine. Thanks
for your confirmation. Choral music is such a part of my musical
thinking right now, I can see a strong need for lyrics improvements in

I had gone around several variations of this syntax, but you (as usual)
hit on the one that works. Thank you!

The file is still "upside down". In Acrobat Reader (v6) I have to
rotate the file twice to view it as expected. Can we convince Lilypond
to do differently? I need to e-mail these parts to casual, amateur
singers. I don't want to have to tell them to rotate the parts if we
can get Lilypond to do it.

Thank you again!

Docs suggestion

2003-10-07 Thread J. Daniel Ashton

I'd like to see a new section in the fine manual: How-Tos.

In specific, I'm looking for something like "How to adjust the 'margins'
on output (see linewidth, place it _after_ the \include paper16.ly)."
Or "How to move the lyrics closer to the notes." Or "How to make the
lyrics line up with the first note of each melisma."

Some of this same material exists as comments or implications in the
regression tests. Some of it doesn't. As a late-night frustrated user,
I'd like a place in the manual that showed extremely brief but complete
examples, preferrably accurate with the current version of the software.

Someone asked recently for Docs suggestions and criticisms, so there's
my two cents worth.

I go to the docs, particularly the PDF file, for everything. When I
fail to find something there I turn to the regression tests and other
.ly files littering the installation directory.

My feeling is that new users have terminology problems (the docs could
help somewhat). For example, Margin is found in relation only to TeX
and LaTex files: nothing ties it to linewidth.

In the last two revisions Lilypond docs have added some excellent, very
readable explanatory material. I really like the new versions of the
first two chapters. But as someone who's operating under an intense
time constraint, I also need a How-To section, which should embody the
FAQs, the examples and samples, the regression tests, and a How-To spin
on each of the remaining document sections. Short but complete examples
are intensely useful.

Don't blame LilyPond in this case, blame your version of ghostscript

HI are you working on patching etf2ly??

Is there a reason that the header is on the bottom??
My druthers would be that etf2ly should be templateable.
I already know the format I want for my final file it would be nice to
be able to specify a template to use to dump the converted etf2ly output
into.

There is no header in the lilypond files produced with etf2ly. There
is a score block, and that one's traditionally on the bottom.

Well, I personally don't think that's very feasible, but you're more
than welcome to prove me wrong.

All I'm trying to do is solve some issues that I have, in order to see
if I can use etf2ly for any serious work at all.

yeah there is only however one other show in town that is musicxml2ly.
I am in touch with the maintainer who is now revving up to make his

So if you decide that etf2ly isn't able to do the job maybe this will do

Re: Docs suggestion

2003-10-07 Thread Mats Bengtsson
In principle, I agree! However, I also have some comments:

- You didn't mention two other excellent sources of information:
  * The "Tips and tricks" document.
  * The mailing list archives.
- There are thousands of different things you can do with LilyPond
  that are not explained with a separate example in the manual.
  It's very difficult to know what to include, but one of the best
  ways to find out what is missing is to look at the questions to
  this mailing list. I know that Han-Wen and Jan struggle hard to
  remove not only bugs but all kind of limitations and problems that
  pop up on the mailing lists, still it would be great if someone had
  the time to collect a How-To or FAQ. We have discussed it several
  time on the list and even had a FAQ on the web using wiki-wiki
  technique so that anybody could update it. One of the main problems
  actually turned out to keep it up to date, the same problem as
  any other kind of documentation. So, in the end it boils down to
  finding one or more persons who have the time and ambition to
  maintain such a document.
- The specific issues you mention, are described in the
  "Global layout" section of the manual (in more or less detail).
  The first step, instead of creating a new How-To document, is
  to clarify the text of the existing manual.
  Here it's very easy for you and everybody else to make a contribution,
  just send suggestions for reformulations of the text to bug-lilypond.
Mats

J. Daniel Ashton wrote:

Doable, except that I'm not familiar with any PDF reader under Windows,
Cygwin or Linux that will save the file as having been rotated.

Jumping from Mats earlier reply, I've taken to re-running ps2pdf under
Linux. I run lilypond under Cygwin, then switch to Linux and re-run
ps2pdf directly, which generates a PDf file in the orientation I expect.

For me the problem was that the file /etc/texmf/dvips/lilypond.map
was a symbolic link pointing to a lilypond.map of my old distribution
(1.6.6) that didn't exist anymore. What solved my problem was (in Debian):

I only have one lilypond.map on my system and it is coming from the lilypond
2.0.1 distribution.

calvin:~/VVE/Arcadelt$ locate lilypond.map
/usr/share/lilypond/2.0.1/dvips/lilypond.map (this is the file used)
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/lilypond-1.7.16/mf/out/lilypond.map (used for old build)
/home/rhdv/src/lilypond-1.7.16/mf/out/lilypond.map (idem)
/windows/Cygwin/usr/share/lilypond/2.0.1/dvips/lilypond.map (windows)

So it seems that I have only one lilypond.map file. I attach it, maybe someone
sees something strange in the file itself.

Almost. This is an editing task, and the developers don't like the
idea of user variables, for fear it may result in preprocessing.
Also, you want a finished product so you can add fingering, etc.,
when you have finished the notes.

You will find something close in ptfilter.txt, specifically
substitute.sed. Change the <> to [] though, because of the
change in lilypond chord syntax. You want one measure on
each line in your infile. I'm going to rework that pretty
soon.

a bis c cis  Your []4 xx- []8copied []-stuff here []4

sed -f substitute.sed infile.ly > newfile.ly  produces:

Your a4 xx- bis8copied c-stuff here cis4

and doing this isn't that hard:

[]4 xx- []8copied []-stuff here []4
[]4 xx- []8copied []-stuff here []4
[]4 xx- []8copied []-stuff here []4
[]4 xx- []8copied []-stuff here []4

(Artificial) harmonics

2003-10-07 Thread Maarten Boasson
I am newcomer to Lilypond, and I like what I see - which to date is only
very little.
Almost immediately I ran into a problem: artificial harmonics (cello
music; the problem is the same for all string instruments, of course).
The solution to that problem came through interaction with Lilypond from
A. Beneteau, who sent me the follwowing exxample:
---
\score {
\notes
\new Staff { << { \property Voice.NoteHead \set #'style = #'harmonic
g'} \\ {c'4} >> }
}
Note very obvious, nor short to type, but this is the idea
---
This indeed works. But, I don't think the solution is worthy of
Lilypond: the noteheads are really just a little too small and the entry
is much more cumbersome than necessary, I would think.
For an example, see the attached extract from S. Saens' 3rd violin
concerto: it is clear that the diamond-shaped heads actually cross the
staff lines when the note is between the lines!
My desire would be to have a syntax like the following (but not
necessarily this; anything else that fits better with the Lilypond style
is fine, of course):
c\ahfor artificial harmonics, in which case Lilypond would
automatically create the two noteheads that represent this in printed
music: the lower, regular note at the pitch specified, and an open,
diamond shaped one a fourth above it (see attached); for the very rare
case that a different interval is used, an additional modifier could be
used;
d\nhfor natural harmonics, where only the diamond shaped
head is
printed at the specified pitch.

Jan.

Strange to say, I ran convert-ly on my old files (which had the correct
version syntax, as in

/version "1.6.5"

but 2.0.1 choked on the resulting .ly files anyway. So I'll just bone up
on the manual and see what's what. As you say, it may be that convert-ly
is buggy.

project management revisited

2003-10-07 Thread Aaron
Hi all,
a while ago I asked advise on versioning for a notation project.
The answer was CVS. I asked my webhost if I could install it and they
gave me shell access.
I have no idea however what I am doing, I read the help files and can't
figure out how to use it.

They all say make a Repoistory directory, which I did. All empty.
Do I create a directory structure for the files or does Cvs.
I realize that this is the wrong list to ask but I can't see myself
subscribing to yet another mailing list.. I am subscribed to at least 10
already.

Must I add files now or can I add them later.
Since it is not a software project it must be different somehow, hmm,
just confused.

If anyone of list could help me with this I would most appreciate it.

I believe the problem is because your system is "mixed" and I compiled
it on (and for) Sid only (maybe something to do with libraries, who
knows?). I used to have problems like that when I was running a
"mixed" debian box. I'd try to trace the problem, but since Feri's
packages are working on woody I'll not worry about :-)

trouble with LaTeX package "doublespace"

2003-10-07 Thread Joshua Haberman
lilypond-book works as expected on this LaTeX file:

-

\documentclass{article}
%%\usepackage{doublespace}

\begin{document}

\begin{figure}
\begin{lilypond}
c'
\end{lilypond}
\end{figure}

\end{document}

-

If I uncomment "\usepackage{doublespace}" though, I get the attached
DVI. Basically, everything is squished together vertically. Enabling
the double spacing *does* produce correct results if the lilypond
section is not inside a figure.

I have gotten this result using the official Debian packages of lilypond
1.8.1, as well as the 2.0.1 package posted by Pedro Kroger.

Any ideas? Please cc: me, I am not subscribed.

Josh

Re: Problem with conversion: bug?

Hi there,

I just installed Lily 2.0.1-1 for cywin which runs perfect! but when I

I noticed this, too.

I was going to ask the developers if there was some sort of process in
place for regression testing of conversion from older formats (though I
think it would have to be done by eyeball).
