One reason for the spacing problems was, that lilypond found a file cmr8.afm before cmr8.tfm. For some reason this did give wrong metrics and might be a hidden problem in lilypond. In my case the afm-file was found in the TeXLive tree, but I guess that it could also give problems when it is installed in tetex. The second reason is even more strange for me: I tried to run 2 files, which contained the same song; the only difference were comments and white space. But one file gave good results, the other one bad ones. After I set the coding style to latin-1-unix in emacs, also the second file gave nice results. Unfortunately I didn't save a bad copy for testing. Emacs seems to be too nice today; some years ago one could see the famous ^M line ending and such features, now you don't realize that. Problem with Lyrics.
I'm using version 1.6.6.
There seems to be very little help in the manual for lyrics (is this
only my opinion?). However, it does say under Durations that they
apply to lyric mode. But I cannot get them to work right.
I have a time signature of 4/4. So I reckon that to typeset one
syllable of the lyrics to match one crotchet, then a duration of 4 on
the first syllable should be correct. Instead, I have to specify 16
(!).
In addition, I cannot get long syllables at the end - although I
specify a duration of 1 for the final two syllables, the get set to a
crotchet each.
Finally I get some warning messages I don't understand.

The quick answer - go to http://www.lilypond.org ... click on the appropriate download link (menu, left side). I think the web page would be familiar & comfortable to most people with Linux or GNU experience so I will assume you are looking for the Windows version. Therefore, from the http://lilypond.org home page, click on the 'Windows Binaries' link (left side menu, in the Download segment) ... click on the "Install Lily Now" link (in the Quick Install section, towards the top of the main window area) ... if you start this from Internet Explorer, this could start automatically. Lilypond runs in Linux or other Unix variants. One variant in particular, Cygwin, is designed to run in a Windows environment - it runs very well on my AMD-500 running Windows 98 SE. So I run Windows, which runs Cygwin, which runs Lilypond in what appears initially to be a "DOS prompt" window. I do not believe there is a 'native' Windows version. Personal comment ... The web site is very typical of a Linux or GNU site - all the information is there, but in most of these sites I've always had to go through the entire contents at least once to familiarize myself with the general organization, as well as the purpose and thought process of the program. This may seem tedious, but it is very much worth your time - especially given the value and flexibility of a superb product like Lilypond.
