I wanted to point you to the documentation, but this is missing from
the tutorial, as it seems.

Voices (and other contexts) are identified by name. If you want two
voices, you must give them different names. Two voices on one staff
that have the same name, are the same voice. You can use this to
separate articulation and notes, eg.

Try this:

\score {
\context Staff=sa \notes <
\context Voice=va {
\stemUp
 c''4 c''4 c''4 c''4
}
\context Voice=vb {
\stemDown
e''8 e''8 e''8 e''8 e''8 e''8 e''8 e''8
}

\paper {}
}

It does. But LilyPond needs to get the font and character dimensions
of the TeX fonts that are used. This goes through the kpathsea
library and actual font files. Juggling with two tex distributions is
asking for trouble.

> Thanks for your valuable hints!

I would suggest to use tetex alone; or create two users: where each
users only sees one tex distribution (PATH and TEX* variables).

New High Performance Rink System Installed In Washington State

2002-10-04 Thread Arena-Watch

New Lynnwood Ice Rink Reopens In September With New High Performance Rink
System

LYNNWOOD -- A new ice arena will open in Lynnwood Sept. 15, about four
months after the SnoKing Ice Arena closed.
Washington Ice Skating Association, which owns both the former SnoKing
rink and the Olympicview private ice rink in
Mountlake Terrace, is remodeling and reopening the rink as the Lynnwood
Ice Center.

The new ice center will be in the renovated SnoKing building at 19803 68th
Ave. W. After 20-plus years of being open to
the public, the SnoKing Ice Arena closed suddenly at the end of March.
Former SnoKing manager Doug Stewart said they
left because "we leased the land and building, and it wasn't economically
feasible to continue it that way." Stewart said
SnoKing owner Lexi Doner tried to get the association to lower the rent
and remodel it, but it didn't happen. Doner decided
to close SnoKing. Doner, now owner of the Kent Valley Ice Centre, wasn't
available for comment. In the meantime, plans
were made by association board members to renovate the old rink and make
it "safer and more enjoyable place for families
and youth to come to," Lynnwood Ice Center general manager Kevin Urbanski
said.

Upgrades to the facility ice rink system include a new high performance
TurboChiller refrigeration system complete with an
advanced microprocessor control system, new sand base rink floor system,
professional steel framed dasher board system,
and dehumidification system. The ice rink system was provided by Burley’s
Rink Supply of Johnstown, PA. -
www.burleys.com. "It was great to have this opportunity to work with WISA
once again after installing their Mt. Lake
Terrace Complex some years ago. They will be very happy with advancements
made with our TurboChiller system and the
exceptional energy performance it provides over other ice making systems.
This owner also wanted to changed from a
more dangerous ammonia system to a much safer environmentally stable
halocarbon refrigerant." said John Burley. "Many
complexes installing ammonia systems today are not being installed in
accordance with local or national codes. If someone
is hurt or killed with these systems when not installed per code, it
becomes a criminal event for the owner and the
architect/engineer of record. Many Canadian companies are pushing ammonia
systems without knowing, or properly
advising owners of all true code compliance issues required to have a safe
system. Codes are different in Canada. This is
very troublesome since ammonia is highly toxic and flammable and is very
dangerous if not installed per the letter of the
code. There have been numerous ice rink mechanical rooms destroyed by
ammonia generated explosions."

WISA hired Seattle based construction specialist Ken Clark of Development
Services to provide coordination and project
management services. Mr. Clark has become well versed in arena
construction activities having spearheaded almost a
half a dozen projects in recent years and with many more projects where he
was a consultant.

Ryan General Construction provided all construction services. Ryan also
helped round out the circle of experienced
contractors since Ryan was involved with several previous ice rink
projects such as the Castle Ice complex finished last
year in Renton, Washington. John Burley said "it is great working with
the combination of talent we had on this project.
Both Ken and Peter know these types of projects well and make the most
adverse construction obstacle easy to
overcome. And, since renovations take some extra effort and experience, it
was great to have them on this project."

Mr. Ken Clark of Development Services can be contacted at 206-236-2756.
Mr. Peter Meyer of Ryan Construction can be reached at 425-488-4489.
Mr. John Burley of Burley’s Rink Supply can be reached at 1-800-428-7539.

The new center is a non-profit organization, said Ric Newgard, executive
director of Seattle Junior Hockey and
secretary/treasurer for the association. The association is made up of the
Seattle Skating Association and Seattle Junior
Hockey. Both are non-profit groups that make their money through bingo
halls in Edmonds and Mountlake Terrace, and
pull tab games offered in connection with the Silver Dollar Casino on
220th Street SW in Mountlake Terrace. The new ice
center has a new ice surface, lobby, pro shop with new skates and a snack
bar. The renovation has added a birthday
room, an arcade, a DJ music booth for weekend youth events and special
lighting. The parking lot is more open, bright
and safe, Urbanski added.

Agreed- nothing is assumed, although from a theoretical standpoint everything is a
design decision. (Sorry, I'm being too picky.)

Could this behaviour be made explicit in the docs? I would like to suggest a code
change or adjustable property setting (to allow the assumption that different
bracketed Voices are "named" differently) as a possible "improvement"- I know I'm
going to lose : ), but it's one of those usability compromises. It is much more
theoretically pure to have the default name for a Voice be "", but software could
provide shortcuts that save time and typing.

Anyway. Got it now, thank you.

This is not the problem. If you followed the discussion, you'd see
that Colin produced a Postscript file which he claims looks weird
on his screen but fine on printer. His file looks fine over here.
Check yourself at
http://www.mail-archive.com/lilypond-user@gnu.org/msg02497.html

I have converted his PS file to PDF
(http://www.s3.kth.se/~matsb/oldmrs.pdf) so Colin should be able
to verify if it was a problem with his Ghostview installation,
but apparently it looks strange also when he uses Acrobat reader.

I'm totally confused, since the handling of embedded fonts in
Ghostscript and Acrobat should be completely independent.
Is it possible that both Ghostscript and Acrobat fail to view
embedded fonts correctly because of some weird installation of
the X window system?

Colin, have you tried to view the Postscript or PDF files at
http://lilypond.org/stable/examples.html ?
Do you see the same problems or do those files look OK?

Hello,
I have looked at the ps-file and it looks fine. Maybe one would prefer
to use the pfa-fonts instead of pkfiles to become more resolution
independent.
Colin might try to generate some graphic file from his ghostview screen
(using some option like
convert to pngmono) so that we know what he is complaining about.

We did have some problem with viewing PostScript files with ghostview
several years ago, when we didn't have sufficient graphic memory. Maybe
he should tell us more about his setup and try to view the files at a
friend's computer.

Best regards

for the chorus i had to use

Re: cadenza question

2002-10-04 Thread Mats Bengtsson

The \cadenzaOn/Off just tell Lilypond to stop inserting bar lines,
the rhythms in the different staves still has to match.

What you could do is to say \times 2/3{...} in the solo part
(don't forget to turn off the tuplet numbers and brackets).
An alternative is to say e1*3/2 in all the other parts.

Mats,

I'm getting weird results as well. PS and PDF output look fine. DVI
output looks VERY weird. The fonts look square. (but not "dotty" as in
low resolution dotty, it looks squigly, or something like that)

PDF and PDF output looks flawless. it could be his Tetex installation.
If he is viewing the PS output using Xdvi, it might not work correctly
(on my system, there's always something missing when use Xdvi to view
the PS output!)

Colin,

1. Run texconfig.

2. Select the MODE menu, and select one of the drivers that have
resolution higher than 300dpi. Hit enter on the OK button. The config
utility will run some things. Exit the menu (if you need to exit it)

3. Select the XDVI menu. Select MODE menu again, and it should ask if
you want to set it for the same driver in Step 2. Select yes. If it
doesn't ask the question, you should select the same driver you selected
in Step2.

4. Select the Return Menu afterwords (it should take you back to the
first menu.

5. Select DVIPS menu, Select GLOBAL menu, Select the papersize you'll be
using most often, then select the MODE menu, and repeat the driver
selection that you did in step 2/3.

Return and exit. Try typeset your score again, and tell us what happens.

What DVI file are you refering to? Those produced on your own
system or the one in Colin's email? Since the font is updated
every now and then, a .dvi file in general is only valid as long
as you have the same Lilypond version installed as was used to
produce it. If you have the problem on your own installation,
please read in the installation instructions on how to get rid
of old font files when upgrading Lilypond.

??? How can you view a postscript file with Xdvi (unless you
have included it as an .eps in another TeX document)?

I maintain that this has nothing to do with the problem Colin

Easy notation uses round heads iso. oval ones. They're just as high,
but less wide. Is that what you mean? If you need bigger sizes, then
you can scale the DVI output by using the dvips -X flag.

quick & dirty hack: goto font.scm, and replace cmr by cmss everywhere.

decrease Staff.minimumVerticalExtent or
ChordNames.minimumVerticalExtent. (see internals documentation)

threads

2002-10-04 Thread David Bobroff

Thanks Graham for the pointer to the "Thread" message. With that example I
got it in one.

Now, about threads; I have to notate some string parts in which two notes
are sounding but it isn't just plain old double-stops. There is a drone on
an open string with several measures tied together while the upper note
changes. Is "thread" the proper mechanism for this? Can a thread context
go on for several measures at a time? Would this allow me to have
independant articulations (slurs etc.) for the two lines? I just want to
be sure I've got some sort of grasp on this before coding a bunch of garbage.

Thanks,

David Bobroff

Complete snippet (and slightly shorter: )

\header {
texidoc = "Cross staff stems

Unfortunately, there is no support for putting chords across staves.
You can get this result by increasing the length of the stem in the
lower stave so it reaches the stem in the upper stave, or vice versa.

@cindex  Cross staff stems
@cindex Stems, cross staff

"
}

stemExtend = \once \property Voice.Stem \override #'length  = #22

%% following reqs 1.7.1 or better.
noFlag = \once \property Voice.Stem \override #'flag-style = #'no-flag

\score { \notes
\context  PianoStaff
< \context Staff = up   {
\stemDown
\stemExtend
f'4
\stemExtend
\noFlag
f'8 }
  \context Staff = down {
  \clef bass
  a4 a8 }

\paper { linewidth = -1.0 }

I've added this to 1.7.1 CVS

Grouping notes

lilypond 1.7.2 CVS,

\notes
{

c4-\groupOpen-\groupOpen-\groupOpen
c4-\groupClose
c4-\groupOpen
c4-\groupClose-\groupClose
c4-\groupOpen
c4-\groupClose-\groupClose
}

(I thought it would be easy, and indeed, it was, but it still took me
3 quarters of an hour to get it working.)

Anyway, it's a tad late, but I hope you appreciate it.
