Numbering of repeated bars

2002-05-11 Thread Carter Brey

Hi, all--

I'd be grateful if you could have a look at the attached and help me
solve a very minor problem. There are fifteen or so bars at the end
which repeat, and I put numbers over them to help keep the player from
getting lost if he starts to think about his taxes or the last episode
of "ER". Once the numerals become two-digit starting at 10, Lilypond
refuses to compile unless I enclosed them in quotes. That's fine, but
they appear in a larger, less attractive font than the single digits.
Any workaround? I know there's a technique for repeated bars in which
the numbers appear over the barlines, but I really want them over the
notes.

I'm using Lilypond 1.4.13 and Linux kernel 2.4.17.

Thanks,
Carter

piano dynamics and midi

2002-05-11 Thread Peter Dixon

I am new to this mailing list. Please let me know (and forgive me) if this
one has already been thrashed out.

I am setting a piano piece of 4 voices, 300 measures and includes 70
dynamics through the piece. On my first attempt I included the dynamics on
the upper voice. The typesetting was fine but in the midi output the lower
voices played at full volume and drowned the upper voice in the '\p' parts.

A dynamic sign written in piano music applies to the whole piano staff, but
it seemed that the midi output was applying it only to the voice in which it
was set. I was able to include dynamics in other voices but avoid printing
them by using

killdynamics = {
  %don't print dynamics for this voice
   \property Voice.DynamicText \override #'molecule-callback = #'()
   \property Voice.Hairpin \override #'molecule-callback = #'()
 }

 However I found it difficult to include manually all the dynamics needed
with
 correct correspondence. Also I am concerned that as the composer gets to
 hear it he will be changing the dynamic pattern and I will be doing 4
 matching edits for each change.

 Any suggestions?

 I have been using Lilypond for over 2 years off and on and have found it
very
 effective - quick to use for simple tasks and powerful for more
sophisticated
 music. I have recently upgraded to 1.4.5 and have found the 1.4
improvements
 very helpful. Thank you, and keep up the good work!

 Peter Dixon

Yes. Wait for 1.6 (or download one of the resent 1.5 versions) and check
out input/template/piano-dynamics.ly

Alternatively you can create two score blocks and do something like
(untested but modulo typos it works)

upper = \notes ...
lower = \notes ...
dynamics = \notes ...
\score{
   \context PianoStaff <
 \context Staff=up < \upper \dynamics >
 \context Staff=down < \lower >
   >
   \paper{}
}
\score{
   \context Staff <
 \upper
 \lower
 \dynamics
   >
   \midi{}
}

Thanks; that did the trick nicely.

Slur between grace note and regular + grace fingering

2002-05-11 Thread Carlos Garcia Suarez

I am using the stable lilypond version in a Windows
2K environment.

I have read it is not possible to add a slur or tie
between a grace note and a regular note. Is this true? is there anyway
around?

Another problem I have found is adding finger
details to grace notes, I have found it gets all really pretty messy, it
confuses the fingering in the next true note. Any solutions?

Thanks

Carlos

Does it run unders windows2K? Is it really a time
saver?

Thanks
