There is precedent for doing it both ways: IRIX 6.2 and later have
/usr/lib, /usr/lib32 and /usr/lib64 for the three supported ABIs (O32,
N32 and N64 respectively).

SuSE also ship biarch systems with separate 64-bit /usr/lib64 and 32-bit
/usr/lib, I believe Mandrake do too, and I believe Debian haven't worked
out how (or whether) to do biarch yet.

64 bit support

2004-08-13 Thread Peter O'Gorman
Hi,
Okay, I've had a peek at what we've got for 64 bit support currently, and it
is not a really good situation. Inside a macro named "_LT_AC_LOCK" we have
tests for various 64 bit architectures that then change the value of LD.
Unfortunately, it looks like the link line actually uses the value of CC
rather than LD, so I don't think this code has much effect.

We may need to fix this :-p
I'll be away for 10 days or so starting Sunday (yay!), so I hope someone
else comes up with solutions for everything and that Gary gets the alpha out
before I return :)

A while back I adjusted things so that GCC -m options like -m64 are
preserved, and unfortunately, that is about as good as it currently
gets. :-(

I do build 64-bit apps regularly, but only as a simple build.
