[Libreoffice] A file to show 8192 discontinuities crashes Calc

2010-12-22 Thread r_ouellette

I often use a file to show that Calc doesn't have the 8192 discontinuities
limit as in Excel (see
http://smurfonspreadsheets.wordpress.com/2007/04/30/1-million-rows/). Until
OOo 3.2.1 I can use my example file, with OOo 3.3RCx and now LibreOffice 3.3
Calc crashes.

As I can't join my example file, here is how to create it:

In A1 put Number;
In B1 put Even or Odd;
>From A2 to A20481 put the numbers from 1 to 20480 (use automatic fill);
>From B2 to B20481 put 1 if the facing number in column A is even, put 2 if
it is
odd (use copy/paste to do it);
Use Automatic filter so that you can select even or odd (2 or 1) from column
2.

This file never crashes OOo Calc before 3.3. You can use the same file in
Excel
and try to select only the even or the odd numbers and do a copy/paste
action.
It won't work, a weird message giving the user the impression that the
problem
comes from him will appear (typical Microsoft message).

Calc 3.3 will freeze forever with this file set to use even or odd numbers
only,
you need to kill the process. I tested this behaviour in Ubuntu Linux
10.04.1 64
bits and in win XP SP3 (at the office). To be honest, I also checked
OpenOffice.org
Calc 3.3RC8 in Ubuntu Linux 10.04.1 64 bits and the same behaviour occurred.

Re: [Libreoffice] A file to show 8192 discontinuities crashes Calc

2011-01-06 Thread r_ouellette

Like I said earlier, I submitted also this bug to OpenOffice.org and it was
marked as RESOLVED yesterday. See
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=116164
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=116164

I don't know how are the contacts (if any) between LO developers and OOo
developers, but the bug was solved. Maybe someone there will give you a hint
;-)

Well, no luck :-(

I checked with LO 3.3 final version (RC4) and the problem remains... It is a
regression from previous OpenOffice.org (before LO) where the file was
correctly calculated.

Regression - LO Writer 4.0

2013-02-18 Thread r_ouellette
I'm using Writer since 2006 (it was then OpenOffice.org's version) for a
statistical document of 262 pages. You can see the result at
http://www.mels.gouv.qc.ca/sections/publications/index.asp?page=fiche&id=67

-- The document is in french only.

There are more than 150 tables, all created using Calc. Each table is copied
as GDI metafile in the Writer document. I intensively use styles in the
Writer document. The tables are copied in vectorial format because they can
be resized like I want in the writer document while preserving their
original appearance. There is also a triple font substitution to avoid
embedding ttf fonts in the pdf version (Arial > Helvetica; Courier New >
Courier; Times NewRoman > Times) and Type1 fonts are used.

Up to version 3.6.x, Writer was fast and usable with close to 270 pages.
Since 4.0, I think a redraw algorithm was introduced that slowed Writer,
making it almost unusable. I must wait a too long time for each page to
redraw when I move inside the document.

Anyone else noticed this behavior?

By the way, even Calc has this redraw problem when you use the paintbrush to
apply a format from a cell to another: try to group a few cells together,
then copy the grouped cells format to another cell and the newly applied
format is not refresh immediately.

Re: Regression - LO Writer 4.0

2013-02-19 Thread r_ouellette
Thank you Miklos and Jan for your suggestions.

I'm a power user of different office applications (like LO -- and OOo since
it's debut) but Im not a programmer.

Bibisect seems interesting but anyhow quite heavy to install, even in a
virtual machine... Maybe I'll give it a try.

The regression I observed appeared with 4.0 (I think the first one I tried
was a beta before RC1) and it was not present in 3.6.x series.

When I read bibisect use, they talk about a single digit version, 3.6
against 3.6.any and not 4.0 against 3.6... I don't want to install something
heavy for nothing :-(

4.0.1 is coming, I'll check with this version before going further...

Re: Regression - LO Writer 4.0

2013-02-20 Thread r_ouellette
I'm using LO version 4.0.1.1 (Build ID:
2c0c17a6e4bee0ee28131ea4bdc47edc700d659) since more than 3 hours on the same
262 pages long Writer document and the problem seems solved! LO 64 bits
linux .deb version.

Fluidity is back (like 3.6.x versions). I'll do the same check on win32
version when available.

I confirm that fluidity is back also on win32 version (winxp at the office),
LO 4.0.1.1.

LibO 4.2.0.0beta2 can't launch internal help

2013-12-04 Thread r_ouellette
I had the same behavior with 4.2.0.0 beta1. Right now I'm using:
Version: 4.2.0.0.beta2
Build ID: 1a27be92e320f97c20d581a69ef1c8b99ea9885d

64 bits, Ubuntu-Linux 13.10. I installed also the two french tar.gz packages
for localisation and for help. A few strings don't appear in french (mostly
in the Options Menu for settings). But my main concern is the fact that I
can't launch the internal help, only the web version opens. The french help
is correctly installed and visible in /opt/libreoffice4.2/help/fr. I double
checked with a LibO 4.1 working installation and the 4.2 installation seems
similar...

The internal help is very useful, very complete and, most of all, can be
accessed without an Internet connection.

I tried to find in different settings files to correct this behavior :-( but
no success...

Someone has a hint?

Re: Default LO to show no splash screen?

2015-09-30 Thread r_ouellette
I always remove the splash screen by changing the value of line 3 of
*/opt/libreoffice5.0/program/sofficerc* from Logo=*1 *to Logo=*0*

So look for sofficerc (Linux version) or soffice.ini (Windows version) or ??
(MacOS version -- I don't have access to this OS).

Splash screens are, for me, an old and useless behavior. The most important
for LibreOffice is it's Start center and the fact that you can drop any
file(s) on it to open it (them).

People are very surprised when I show this behavior of the Start center and
that different icon for different module (Writer, Calc, Draw, Impress, Base,
Math) can be avoided on the desktop if you simply use the Start center.
