Re: NEED HELP (please) -- Problem with dark background - ANY icon style

2017-09-06 Thread Heiko Tietze
Depends on your widget set. LibreOffice still binds to Qt4 so your KDE5 setting
wont work well; I'm on LXQt and have to dig in three configurations.
qtconfig-qt4, qt5-ct, and 'kcmshell5 kwindecoration' may be helpful.
Alternatively, you could start with 'SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk3 swriter' and adjust
the gtk theme to your liking. And finally when talking about icon you could use
'Breeze Dark'.

Minutes of the Design/UX meeting 2017-Sep-07

2017-09-07 Thread Heiko Tietze
Present: Eric, Samuel, Yousuf, Stuart, Heiko

Organization

 * Ideas for team metrics
   + we have #comments/actions on BZ, visits at our blog, participation in
meetings
   + ideas:
 + Subscriptions on ML
 + Time to commit
 + Telegram members
   + anything else?

 * Numbering & Bullets, Outline
   + Usability testing done (Eric)
 + translated:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=16Xp3RL_iWTR5YINDkKZZS0KhavXc24LfmaYw_x6ddBA
 + will prepare a short presentation (Eric)
   + have a design session on Friday afternoon in 2 or 3 weeks
 + Doodle for design session -->
https://beta.doodle.com/poll/dc8aphpdzwq7f2zu

Tickets

 * Change default of reference to illustration from page to number
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=96299
   + WontFix because the issue is the workflow not the default (Heiko)
   + rename to plural forms
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=112124
   + probably more than just changing references but adding the logic to
separate between objects (Stuart)
   => yes 2, maybe 3, so take Thomas' suggestion

 * Fields (actually cross-references) in the sidebar
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=91923
   + WontFix because because dialog and toolbar are sufficient for all
scenarios (Heiko)
   => agreed to Wontfix

 * Access to master elements per sidebar in Impress
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93178
   + disagree with having those rarely changed properties in the sidebar (Heiko)
   => no reason to put master elements in the sidebar

 * Embedded palette
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=63898
   + WontFix because or rather unclear use case (Heiko)
   + Cor reopened and set needsUX again
   + Document colors are the better choice (Heiko)
  + Document colors isnt fully working (Jay)
  + Document colors not necesarily covers all branding colors (Stuart)
   + Solution is to allow palettes to be added using extension manager (Jay)
   + How to include the template (Eric) -> likely via template dialog (Jay)
   + Scope: all modules where templates work
   + Persistance: palette is cleared when teh template is closed
   => introduce a 'template palette' (better name needed)
  modifiable in the area fill tab/dialog (Jay) <- please not (Heiko)

 * Introduce 'lift caps' additional to drop caps
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=103997
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=70180
   + good idea (Heiko)
   + better naming for drop caps needed (Stuart) - "Inital" perhaps
   => follow W3C CSS working group nomenclature (103997#c15) on original 70180

Minutes from the UX meeting 2017-Sep-14

2017-09-14 Thread Heiko Tietze
Present: Jay, Stuart, Heiko

General

  * LibreOffice Open Source aspects
+ published:
https://design.blog.documentfoundation.org/2017/09/13/open-source-means-libreoffice-users/

  * Design Session planned about numbering/bullets
+ Doodle for design session -->
https://beta.doodle.com/poll/dc8aphpdzwq7f2zu
+ please at least enter your name if no time is good for you

  * Guideline for dropdown selection
+ https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=112175
+ see also https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=112324
+ Proposed HIG draft:
  + When the combobox/dropdown is on the main form, changes should not
become effective until the user
leaves the control, or collapses the open widget.
  + On secondary dialogs changes are applied immediately, e.g. when another
list entry is selected by
mouse wheel or arrow keys.
+ reasons: performance, don't care but MS doesn't function that way, safety
as changes may not be intended
+ better always update immediately on any change (Heiko)
+ live preview is available in secondary dialogs (Jay)
=> keep the status quo and write HIG; but deveval first

Tickets

 + Rulers for margins instead of padding
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=111779
   + current way is useful (Stuart, Jay)
   => design additional ruler "modes", responding to object content (e.g.
padding)
  provide configuration (component View or Expert config) to toggle ruler
behavior

Minutes of the Design Hangout: 2016-Oct-14

2016-10-14 Thread Heiko Tietze
Present: Jay, Cor, Kendy, Heiko, Stuart, Tomaz

Organization

 * News wrt. comments for tickets being assigned and in implementation (esp.
easyhacks)
   + do not comment publicly in this state
   + do not comment when needsUXEval has been removed
   + do not use NEEDINFO / use NEEDINFO to identify tickets to be resolved
   + be kind
 * Sources of official materials missing
   + take care of it AI => kendy
   + add this to https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Branding
 * Design session next week about versioning with Sharepoint integration
   + starting after the hangout at 15:00 CEST (Oct/21)

Tickets

 * Always allow spacing to contents even when there is no border set (for
frames but also page, paragraph...)
   + tdf#41542 (solved to deal with round-trips/as compatibility feature for
doc files; but still disabled)
   + pro: flexibility, con: legacy issue/compatibility/odf spec?
   + good idea (jay)
   + Regina might have had concerns because of inteference with other areas
   (e.g. https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33041
   Allow page background to cover the whole page, not only within page
borders) (Cor)
   => make sure that nothing breaks but green otherwise (AI Heiko: talk to
Regina)

 * Allow toolbars in full-screen mode?
   + e.g. quick find https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=95462
   + pro: no limitation for users, con: clear concept without; only the qf-bar
has a shortcut
   + full screen mode is for writing, no need to have floating toolbars (Cor,
Jay)
   + How about Navigator in a floating toolbar? (Heiko)
 + Not needed (Jay), not today (Cor)
 + Technical limitation perhaps (kendy)
   => No guideline will be defined; basically the mode is to close/hide
toolbars and other controls

 * Bring back "Clear direct formatting"
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=102915
   + Pro: most users want it; Con: keep the menus clean; preference for styles
   + better processes needed; user workflow should be the first argument;
useful in both (Stuart)
   + it is available at the toolbar, no need for the contex menu (Jay)
   + context menu is informative for beginners (Cor)
   + probably beginners do not know what it means (kendy)
   => bring it back but into submenu (~60% decision)

 * Show restart message after extension installation or update menu
automatically (cornouws, 20161002):
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46279
   + I've reopened because IMO it sucks..
   + No response from the people, so maybe something we should just live with??
   + It makes sense to not ask for restart when it isn't needed. But whether
this is added to the description or
 where ever is not a matter of UX I'd say. (Heiko)
   => revert the patch; add to extension spec for option to restart

In particular I wonder what subtickets of tdf#106547 are fixed now and how

ODF specification regarding multistop/-color gradients

2016-09-10 Thread Heiko Tietze
Hello all,

the LibreOffice conference gave me the chance to present some ideas regarding
Draw and shapes in general. One of the most wanted features is the multistop
gradient. Today we can define gradients between two colors, either linear,
radial, or whatever. It would be nice to have a) non-linear multistop
gradients, for example to illustrate a sundown with a small red and a larger
yellow section, and b) a gradient over more than two colors, e.g. in order to
add blue sky to the sundown.

Since Calligra offers multicolor gradients, Armin and me checked how it is
saved (the rendering is build-in right now). And it turns out that they hack
SVG into the ODF. For the (predefined) rainbow-like gradient the style.xml
looks like this:

As an UX evangelist I don't care too much about the implementation and have
rather the workflow and interactions in mind. Ideally the multi-gradient works
with all features, and not as another type next to linear, radial etc. (There
might be a problem that result in this sub-optimal solution).

And finally we have to take interoperability into account as well as the
conformity to the ODF specs (no idea if and how it is defined).

So how do we make multistop/multicolor gradients possible?

Cheers,
Heiko

PS: Suggestions on how to implement this feature in the UI are existing.

Re: ODF specification regarding multistop/-color gradients

2016-09-12 Thread Heiko Tietze
So taking all together we have means to save the multistop/multicolor
gradient and we can render it correctly. Sounds great.

The preliminary mockup can be found in
https://design.blog.documentfoundation.org/2015/12/22/area-fill-options-made-consistent.
When the type cannot be chosen freely (in Powerpoint I can define
multistop gradients for radial, linear, rectangular, and path(?)
types) we should still implement it as scribbled in the mockup,
meaning the multistop feature is integrated into the properties
instead of becoming a new type. But when the user defines more than
two stops the type changes to linear and the dropdown will be
disabled.

How to proceed now? Should I file an enhancement ticket?

Minutes of the design meeting 2017-Nov-09

2017-11-09 Thread Heiko Tietze
Present: Thomas, Jay, Stuart, Heiko

 * Page Number in menu at root level
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=113246
   + keep it there or have it just in the submenu
   + should remove from root and only group it with the other fields in the
Insert -> Field sub-menu.
 Note: it does not have to go into Header/Footer, e.g. numbering index
cards, speaker notes (Stuart)
   + page field is not the same as putting the page number into the
header/footer as known from other programs
   => remove 2 / keep 2 = we keep it

 * Two color conditional formatting
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=86508
   + typical heatmap is blue/red but brighter than today (Heiko)
   + Excel - http://bugs.documentfoundation.org/attachment.cgi?id=109790
   => use Light Yellow 3 / Light Green 3

 * Alternative cell selection
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104267
   + mockup -
https://bug-attachments.documentfoundation.org/attachment.cgi?id=129162
   + WF because of missing use case; a lot of effort for no good reason (Heiko)
   => WF agreed

 * Wording for legacy cursor movement
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=113235
   + Old "Use legacy cursor movement behavior when selecting",
  + "legacy" isnt useful unless LO previously had this behaviour
   + Option 1 "Excel style selection" (Cor)
 + "style" not suitable word to describe behaviour
   + Option 2 'Excel multiple cell keyboard selection' (Yousuf)(Stuart)
   + Option 3 "Excel compatible selection for multiple cells" (Heiko)
   + Option 4 "Excel-like selection for multiple cells" (Thomas)
   + Option 5: "Convenient selection" (and select by default) (Heiko)
   => take option 2

 * Opening CSV files
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=89683
   + c18 'open always in Calc'
   + default behavior is controlled by document service, behavior is correct.
 Very weak justification for any change needed here ==> WF (Stuart)
   => split 2/2 pro/con so WF

Next meeting will be on Wednesday, Nov/15.

Re: Interface similar to OpenOffice?

2017-07-13 Thread Heiko Tietze
Hi Peter,

why don't you just try? And I wouldn't say "made an interface" is overly
verbose ;-). So in case you face a problem that can be solved only by
developers you could ask on this mailing list. Otherwise we have the awesome
https://ask.libreoffice.org/de/ 'first level support' page (in German, and many
other languages).

Cheers,
Heiko

Can we abuse this data for user metrics? Would be another most-wanted task,
whether or not based on these log files.

Resizable wizards

2017-01-08 Thread Heiko Tietze
We decided [1] to go with non-resizable dialogs by default. However wizards
such as Calc > Insert > Form Controls > List box (sabpilot) are still
resizable. So I suggest to unset the resizable flag at
svtools/uiconfig/ui/wizarddialog.ui. This would affect a lot of dialogs and
maybe have unexpected results. Any thoughts?

This reverts commit 1cb1cc30b5eb75483b6aaeec0192f7ee1d833461.

Setup.ico contains of three different image sizes. Furthermore, the design
is not applied to the other setup icons (partial, complete). And please discuss

2017-01-18 Thread Heiko Tietze
Andreas Kainz is the maintainer of Breeze icons. He did not only
submit the LibreOffice icons in Breeze style but also most of the
icons for KDE software. Colors are reserved for the app level in
Breeze, functions are basically monochrome. I challenged him two years
ago with the idea of a colorized Breeze set- and will not stop to poke
him. The colors would need to be defined according the functional
scope, e.g. style stuff in blue, device things in green etc. Another
issue with the set reported by users is that line strokes are very
thin. And we want to have the set in different sizes with a level of
detail depending on it. Hell of work, altogether.

 * Bookmark spelling/grammer findings
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93073
   + maybe a full overhaul of the dialog is needed but the idea sounds
reasonable (Heiko)
   + don't see the point of adding it to the dialog, as comments/bookmark can
be done right now
 as the dialog is modal (Jay)
   + looking for more opinions (Heiko)

 * Styles in Draw/Impress
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=94369
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=101756
   + Topic for 5.4? > absolutely (Jay)
   + Ideally create a mockup and a couple of predefined styles and find a dev
(Jay)
   + Update the existing graphic styles (Tomaz)
   + textbox vs. shapes issue is styles are applied (Tomaz)
   + preview needed in sidebar (Heiko)
   + code base needs rework, e.g. no Ui file today (Tomaz)
   => keep it in the backlog

 * Broken links
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=105187
   + to interrupt the workflow by warnings is bad
   + Use message dialog, infobar, or (newly to introduce) callouts?
   + another option is to have a "don't show anymore" checkbox with the
ordinary confirmation box,
 similar to the 'confirm file format' dialog when saving in non-odf (Jay)
   + like callout idea most and there is need for it (Tomaz)
   + infobar is rather for the whole document; and when it fades-out
automatically the document would jump up
   + Excel shows a small exclamation icon with a context menu for minor issues
like numbers vs. text

 * Accessibility guideline
   +
http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/Guideline-for-navigation-tt4205277.html
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=100898 (was the reason
to start this discussion)
   + Solution 1 (that's my understanding of keyboard navigation yet it's not
the current status):
 + Navigate on the top level UI hierarchy per F6. Start with the main menu,
   followed by the open toolbars, and finally the sidebar.
 + Use arrow keys to navigation within main menu and toolbars, and execute
the function per Enter.
 + Within the sidebar use arrow keys to traverse the tabs (e.g. Properties,
Styles, Gallery etc.).
   Press Return to enter the deck.
 + Within the deck cycle through the content panels (e.g. Styles,
Character, Paragraph etc.) per
   ctrl+tab/shift+ctrl+tab.
 + Within the content panel navigate between controls using tab/shift+tab
(e.g. Alignment, Bullets,
   Numbering etc. at Properties > Styles).
 + Use arrow keys to access controls that are part of a collection such as
toggle buttons, lists,
   dropdowns (e.g. bold, italic, underline etc.).
 + Label all decks, content panels, controls/collections and provide
mnemonic accelerator.
 + Go back to the document per Escape.
   + Solution 2 (what we have today and what Stuart describes in comment 5 of
tdf#100898):
 + Navigate on the top level UI hierarchy per F6. Start with the main menu,
   followed by open toolbars, and finally the sidebar.
 + In the sidebar cycle through deck title, content panels, and sidebar
decks using the arrow keys.
 + Enter the sidebar deck per return, or cycle through the content
including the close button per tab/shift+tab.
 + Use arrow keys to access controls that are part of a collection such as
toggle buttons, lists, dropdowns etc.
 + Make the content panel title part of the tab sequence to allow exit.
 + Label all decks, content panels, controls/collections and provide
mnemonic accelerator.
 + Go back to the document per Escape.
   + definitely needs a guideline (Jay), and there was another bug
   + sidebar close/minimized should be taken into consideration (Jay)
   + Decks should be part of the F6 hierarchy meaning F6 lands at the deck
(when it's open)
 and pressing F6 again goes to the tabs (Jay)
   => will create a gdoc for the discussion (Jay)

 * Notebookbar (ggurbet)

  when the user switches away from the contextual tab during element

  still continue to automatically switched to the contextual tab for that

to, if i select
  the Home tab to focus on text formatting rather than table design and
then leave table,
  if i enter a table again, should it still switch back to the Table tab)"
 + MS jumps automatically to the contextual band
 + contextual switching is implemented (Szymon) but that might be buggy in
master (Jay)
 + proposed is a smart contextual switch with switch on insertion and
sticky behavior on modify content

Tickets

 * Currency icon

   + Option a) Localize and follow the ICU standard with font
   + Option b) Have a unique symbol independent from locale (e.g. Breeze,
comment 21)
   => Have one icon for currency created the icon designer

 * Export bookmarks to PDF in Impress
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=107932
   + a) Use another property such as the slide name (behavior today; where name
is set by default to the slide title)
   + b) Rename the option and allow to export name plus title, optional
(suggestion)
   + c) Just remove the option to export bookmarks from Impress
   => Similar to Writer's export of outlines the _title_ of slides should be
exported (rather than slide names)

The pad is still at https://pad.documentfoundation.org/p/UX-branding-6.0 and
the last request for input has been done on the mailing list
http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/Branding-6-0-td4215458.html (x-post with

100% agreement for the transparency.

Apparently, there is not much interest in that topic. I sent out four or five
messages on the mailing lists, wrote a blog post and filed a job request on OSD
just to end up with a self-made proposal and some ideas from a friend. We do
not have an ad hoc concept for the major release nor anything to draw focus on.
That leads to a trivial design like what we have today. Given we hire a
designer what should she do? Creativity does not come out of the blue. Plus,
there is likely no budget. And personally I think we shouldn't spent donation
money for those short-term pieces. Would be different if it was for 10 years or
more.
On the other hand we have the original design, which is nice and was never
challenged. Don't remember why the major release should receive a unique
branding at all. That's why I support the idea to go back. But we do open
source and it's up to the community to decide with what design to continue.

using the font's height is now too tight without
 disrupting other SAL and SVX need for font height from hhea or typo

 * List view for template manager
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104154
   + Opinions pro and con a filemanager-like visualization
   + We've used "Thumbnail" view for both templates, and rendering the MRU to
the Start Center, providing
 a "List" view with full filename & extension has been requested several
times, e.g.
 https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=95739
 and adding that representation as a list for Templates and Recently used
documents would add
 functionality so long as we do not drive
   + Pro: For a large number of templates a list view is very useful (Cor)
 + Search is provided for this purpose (Jay)
 + Still missing a good overview, maybe also sorting capabilities (Cor)
+ sorting alphabetically the template name does not provide additional
functionality (Jay)
 + It's simply faster to work with a certain amount of templates.
   + Con: Template manager must not look and act like a file manager (Jay)
 + it's called a template manager, so add a manage functionality with a
list view. Simple (Cor)
+ we have limited management features both technically and design (Jay)
 + File manager would be a bottomless pit, we cannot implement all features
(Jay)
   + it's not about a full file manager functionality; no one asks that.
 + Stuart supported this hezitation about a file manager in c5, c7, c9 and
closed the ticket therefore
   + Con: No other office suite provides a list view for templates (Jay)
 + then we can start dumping a lot of code.
   => Listview makes sense only as a detailed view with more than one column
 + Let's introduce creation date/time and person/department, last
modification date/time and person,
   size, location?, favorite flag...
 + Include sorting capabilities
 + Consider hierarchies (Eric)

   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=78302
   + Do we want to introduce a guideline to confirm actions that affect not
only the current selection?
   + Yes means to let the user confirm 'delete all comments', for example, No
means to keep the current behavior
   + better decide about confirmation on the particular situations
   + undo is sufficient in this particular (and most other) topic (Jay)

Minutes of the Design/UX Meeting: 2017-Jul-27

2017-07-27 Thread Heiko Tietze
Present: Tomaz, Eric, Heiko

Organization

  * Participation in the design meeting declined
+ no response to the question last week
+ will ask people directly what we can improve
+ Bubli: criticizing the missing technical background of proposals
+ Samuel: lunch time around 13, preference is 9-11 or 14-16
+ Tomaz/Eric: it's okay but vacation time during summer
+ Eric: maybe better advertise the meeting to the community

  * New survey planned about LibreOffice Aspects
+ preview at https://survey.documentfoundation.org/783768
+ How many extensions did you install? / Do you install LibreOffice
extensions on your system? (Andreas)
+ Do you install the local help? (Heiko)
+ Did you read a tutorial/book/...? (Heiko)
+ Office suits: distinguish between online/offline (e.g. +Office 365) (Eric)
+ Use of mobile version (Tomaz)

  * How about a survey on Calc, Impress, or Writer with open questions like for
Draw?
+ thumbs up

Tickets

 * Change sidebar deck label 'Properties' to 'Formatting' (cont'd)
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=88742
   + "Attributes" has no advantage; how about Inkscape's 'Document Properties'
   => rename "Style and Formatting" into "Styles"
   => keep "Properties" (too much fuss)
   + https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/#/c/40487/

 * Switch default to 16:9 in Impress/Draw
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93244
   + good idea (Heiko), bad idea (Jay)
   + introduce a user setting or remember the last setting (Heiko)
   + perhaps make it dependent on the actual screen dimension (Eric)
   + run a quick poll (Eric)
   => postpone the decision
   + https://plus.google.com/107566594492891737454/posts/Gv86jqr9qyf

 * Width of font name field at Writer's standard toolbar
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=88542
   + well-designed to fit the total app width; only room for a few pixels
   + possible solutions:
 + dynamic tooltip: maybe not easy (Tomaz)
 + splitter: also not a quick fix (Tomaz)
   => WFM because of workaround in the sidebar

 * Terminology for master slides in Impress
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87592
   + Master Slide (Heiko, Sophie)
   + code pointers are easy to find (xml for menu, ui for sidebar) (Tomaz)
   => change into Master Slide
   + https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/#/c/40485/

 * New layout in Impress
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93087
   + white-space is not bad (Heiko)
   => new layouts would be nice

 * Pivot table, refresh all
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=89530
   + 'Refresh All' under Data > Pivot Table would be easy to implement (Tomaz)
   + Not done automatically because operation may take some seconds (Tomaz)
   + But Excel has an option to enable automatic updates (Tomaz)
   + Better solution than refreshing on data change is to update when the user
enters the pivot sheet (Heiko)
   + Duration is not known (no progress bar possible) and cannot get
interrupted (Tomaz)
   + Users asked for macro to refresh all tables (Eric)
   + Macros wouldn't know if the pivot table needs an update (Tomaz)
   + Not the best solution; users can't know if a table is not up-to-date and
needs refresh
   => go with a macro, meaning WFM
   => new ticket with a good solution

Re: Contact with Community

2017-07-31 Thread Heiko Tietze
Hi Christopher,

you are very welcome in our project. Whether your volunteers are
developers, designers, translators, QA fellows, help authors... we
have teams for all disciplines. Start from
http://www.libreoffice.org/community/get-involved/ to find the how-to
pages at our wiki. Speaking about UX, the start page is
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design with all relevant
information. My advice is to just jump into the cold water and to read
and comment on Bugzilla http://bugs.documentfoundation.org/ (design
related tickets have the keyword needsuxadvice).
As Henry pointed out we also have Spanish speaking communities. A
group was created recently on Telegram
(https://telegram.me/libreoffice_es). The local communities are one of
the main pillars for LibreOffice. CC'ing the marketing about that who
may know details.

Thanks a lot for fostering Open Source,
Heiko Tietze (UX Mentor at LibreOffice)

 * Disable Autocomplete depending on paragraph style
  + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=76282
  + reasonable request but complicates the UI
  + auto complete can be disabled easily; shortcut is customizable

Your voice has been heard, like many other on G+. The change is about the
default where today >70% have to switch from 4:3 to widescreen. In future it is
the minority including you who has to change the format. The functionality
remains as it is.

Minutes of the design meeting: 2017-Aug-10

2017-08-10 Thread Heiko Tietze
Present: Samuel, Stuart, Heiko

Organization

 * Further improvements for the meeting needed?
   + perhaps start one hour earlier because of ESC meeting (stuart)
 + lets try the current time first for a while (heiko)
   + make it shorter, e.g. 20min
 + depends on preparation of participants
 + thumbs/up down limits the meeting
 + sometimes even 40-50mins are not enough
 + brevity make the meeting not better
 => keep it at 1h
   + more structured agenda, only yes/no decisions
 + agenda is the right way
 + should be followed strictly
 => good like it is now
   + CC agenda on project/dev/qa/marketing mailing list
 + all who are interested are likely in the design ML
 + spamming all ML is not good
 => keep it in the design ML

Tickets

 * Floating menus (options buttons)
   + Floating menu buttons that provide access to contextual functions
   + Should be unobtrusive but are always always in the way
   + Requested here is a menu for auto fill
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=82424
   + And in general wrt. toolbars
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87040
   + if someone implements it... (samuel)
   + not our workflow, wontfix (heiko)
   + MUFFIN-approach is our way, we'd need to make those controls flexible
(stuart)
   => keep the tickets

 * Enhance mail merge toolbar
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109118
   + request to add some buttons to the MM toolbar
   + sounds good (heiko)
   + aligns with jmux? (stuart)
   + add them as icons without text (samuel)

 * Page layout mode for Calc
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109230
   + spreadsheet is not a writer document with tables -> out of scope (heiko)
   + nice idea and good for new users (stuart)
   + if we go ahead with this idea it should behave like the (standard) page
preview in Writer
 for consistency (heiko)
   + how to handle pivot table -> it's a can of worms (stuart)
   => thumbs up, depending on devs

 * Page render issue
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=110001
   + get rid of blurry page border?
   + vcl dependent?, better improve hardware rendering (stuart)
   => discuss in ESC, ideally keep the blurry border

 * Make page orientation preview icon interactive

I wouldn't do so. It's pretty clear that no service has been configured.

+1 for showing the list of files
(currently the list is updated when an item from the service dropdown is
selected)

> * [to be discussed in with the UX/Design team] should we have a "Reload"

No, because there is no reload in any open dialog. If you want to update the
local files you have to change the directory (likely depending of the OS).
Should be the same here.

> * in the "Open Remote", some kind of feedback "something is happening"

Yes, a throbber or even better progress bar makes sense here.

Would be a nice-to-have. But...

+ WebDAV, last entries
I have to enter a user name but below not the password but the service label.
Users like me might not read the label and enter password here. Since the
authentification dialog asks again for the user name we could drop it perhaps.
Otherwise the label should get a different position or a separator.

I started from Writer>Recent documents: Remote and after the first dialog
with user name and password I wasn't asked again (edit: but after restart). As
well at the start center.

Isn't it the same problem as for Open?The better solution is to call save
'Save remotely' - what it does actually right now.
BTW: Save works but 'Save as' gives me a 'The folder contents could not be
displayed. Operation not supported' error message. Guess it comes from an
undefined local place (I'm on Linux/KDE). Question here is whether we should
'save as' locally (/home/; c:\users\\Documents; /Users/) or
remotely with a different name.

> * "Remote File" submenu for Save As should be renamed to "Save Remote
> File..." to give more idea what's going on
Currently 'Save as' works locally. But we could rename Save to 'Save
remotely'.

> * no "Save Remote File..." submenu in the LibreOffice Impress and Draw

+ dialog width restriction is too conservative
I'd like to resize it somewhat smaller to have it in a 4:3 dimension. But
that's not possible due to minimum width of ~800px.

+ 'add/delete service' should be disabled when no service is selected
Both menu entries are enabled even when no service has been defined.

+ preselection of file type depending on app
Filter is set to 'all files' but could adopted to the running app such as
presentations in case of Impress.

+ menu
Users might not look for remote files at the recent files menu. However I have
no idea how to solve this problem. 'Open...' and the default open dialog
should stay as it is. And another menu entry on the top level doesn't reflect
the low relevance of CMIS for the average user.

+ speed
At least WebDAV is slow to an unusable extend.

+ info/app title
Might be good to know that a document is opened remotely. I suggest to add
this info to the title, like 'Foo.odt (Remote) - LibreofficeDev Writer'.

> I am sorry if this feedback comes too early, and all this is actually on

+1 Impressive progress!

Had a discussion with Kendy on IRC. His argument is convenience and
unambiguousness - no need to click the 'add service' button where nothing else
is possible (when the add service dialog is canceled you end in the empty
dialog). I care about consitency and user expectation - to run functions
automatically is a wizard-like behavior and not common in Libreoffice; the
mental step from open remote file to add service needs to be done anyway.
Another disadvantage is that writing a guideline for dialogs is not getting
easier.
Both opinions are valid, and if we do not get more input here either the user
or the developer decides eventually.

If we automatically start the add service function we could also present a list
of services to choose one in order to initialize the dialog. Alternatively, the
dropdown with predefined services should be empty or showing the advice 'Select
a service'. And if all fails we rather add the refresh button instead of
requiring the user to click somewhere.

 Same as for my resentments about adding the refresh button: If dialogs may
show any buttons we do not manage consistency (at least at the dialog bottom).
But I agree with small, toolbar-like buttons without caption perhaps, above
the list of files. And of course the context menu may (and should) provide the
functionality.

Minutes from the design meeting 2018-Jun-06

2018-06-06 Thread Heiko Tietze
Present: Stuart, Muhammet, Tomaz, Thomas, Heiko

* HIG about floating widgets
   + https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/Selection#Appearance
   + Escape to close the floating widget?
   +
http://document-foundation-mail-archive.969070.n3.nabble.com/Guideline-for-floating-widgets-tc4241342.html
   + Heiko, Pedro -1, Alex, Cor, Thomas +1
   + Esc might be pressed accidentaly, toolwindows are also windows and dont
act on esc, and there is likely never
 focus on this widget as input is applied immediately (Heiko)
   + today (6.2.0.0.alpha0 on Windows) esc doent have an effect neither ctrl+f4
or any other shortcut
   + F6 cycles through menu, toolbars, sidebar and flaoting windows
   + help says, in general, esc closes without applying changes (Stuart)
   => let's go with escape to close the floating widgets
+ old: Floating controls are non-resizable, stay on top of the app, and
don't close per escape.
+ new: Floating controls are non-resizable, stay on top of the app, and
close per escape.

 * Selection of adjacent columns in Calc
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=94420
   + no idea about how the selection of zeros works (Heiko)
   + resolved as WFM/NAB
   + but https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=113235
 Better wording for "Use legacy cursor movement behavior when selecting"
   + discussed in the design meeting 2017-Nov-09:
* Wording for legacy cursor movement
+ https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=113235
+ Old "Use legacy cursor movement behavior when selecting",
+ "legacy" isnt useful unless LO previously had this behaviour
+ Option 1 "Excel style selection" (Cor)
+ "style" not suitable word to describe behaviour
+ Option 2 'Excel multiple cell keyboard selection' (Yousuf)(Stuart)
+ Option 3 "Excel compatible selection for multiple cells" (Heiko)
+ Option 4 "Excel-like selection for multiple cells" (Thomas)
+ Option 5: "Convenient selection" (and select by default) (Heiko)
=> take option 2
  + Option 6: "Legacy selection mode" (Muhammet)
  + Option 7: "Compatible selection mode" (Muhammet)
   => "Position cell reference with selection" (Tomaz, Stuart)

 * Keyboard shortcut to move cols/rows
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99457
   + go with ctrl+up/down (crogers)
   + Option 1: NAB/WFM because rarely used and dangerous action
   + Option 2: one-hand mode activated by a shortcut, e.g. ctr+foo, which makes
cursor moving rows/cols
 + vi'ish solution
   + Option 3: ordinary shortcuts, but not simply ctrl+cursor rather
ctrl+alt+cursor
 + ctrl+alt+cursor is used in Gnome shell for workspace
   => no good solution; but option 2 sounds easier to implement and most
flexible
 + after switchting into movement mode we can act on row/col independentely
from selection
   (left/right select the col, top/down the row) making both possible at
once
 + alternatively the movement could be done based on the selection
 + as a compromise do the second if there is a selection but otherwise the
first

 * Table line styles are not visible (Muhammet)
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=88961
   + The first patch merged turns white lines to black, which makes them very
hard to see on dark theme, and
 almost invisible on high-contrast theme
   + The second patch involves some trickery, and brings some improvements, but
still not satisfied with the result
 (try different themes with different colors to see what I mean)
   + Why do we bother changing the color of the lines in the box?
  + What if we stop doing these tricky things, and make the style box just
show the style and the color box
just the color? (Just like the "Border Color" and the "Border Style"
elements do in the Table toolbar)
+ It will be consistent with the rest of the UI
+ It will be always perfectly visible
+ We can also open an enhancement request to add a preview to the
Borders tab of Table Properties dialog,
  like the one in the "Insert Table" dialog in Writer.
  + would require a preview that in fact we have under user-defined (line
arrangement)
  + alternatively, show the line on a dedicated self-drawn rectangle
similar to color dropdowns
=> go with the simple black line ignoring width and color

 * UNO commands to modify style-level character and paragraph properties

 * UNO command controls to only showing font name and font size
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=114943

Re: Windows XP Bug: Libreoffice 5.4.7 fehlt in native 64-bit x64

2018-06-17 Thread Heiko Tietze
Hi Patrick,

you addressed English speaking mailing lists, so better don't write in German.

Windows XP support has ended with LibreOffice 6.0 [1]. Your operating system is
also no support by Microsoft since 2014, and missing security patches makes it
very vulnerable. You may read about the details in [2] and the minimum
requirements for Libreoffice in [3].

Cheers,
Heiko

[1] https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/6.0 (admittedly
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/5.4 talks about deprecated)

Minutes from the design meeting 2017-Dec-06

2017-12-06 Thread Heiko Tietze
Present: Taylor, Jay, Heiko

 * Redesign TDF logo
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=96835
   + WONTFIX as this icon is out branding (Heiko)
   => no reason to change (Taylor, Jay)

 * Files with XLT extension are not added to Recent documents
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=76274
   + Handle templates differently to documents? (c8)
   => same behavior for all document templates, so yes

 * Extra options for export to PDF
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=113866
   + PDF export should keep document style regardless the printer settings
   + printing doesn't save vector data, so it should be handled differently
(Taylor)
   + _print to pdf_ expected to be different from _export_ as pdf on Windows
   + export should make the final output as close as possible to the original
 + no options at all = WYSIWYG?
 + also there is print to pdf as the alternative workflow
   => PDF export should be done independently from the print options

 * Two independent settings to show zero values
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=69993
   + Spreadsheet: Tools > Options > Calc > View > Zero values
   + Printing: Format > Page > Sheet > Zero values
   + confusing (Heiko), not at all (Jay)
   + drop the function and go with style (white font for 0)
 + rejected, workflow makes sense (Taylor)
   + have slightly different labels, at least, to distinguish better
 + rejected, header makes it clear (Jay)
   + couple the two options and make tools > options the parent of page>sheet
 + works only for newly created documents
 + many other options beyond zero are in tools > options > view
   => WFM (too much fuzz)

 * Document specific directories
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53901
   + LibP is supposed to be module agnostic
   + Quite uncommon workflow in the ticket
   => WONTFIX

  * Compound strings
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=114013
   + 'Search text format' and 'Substitute text format'
   + #1 'Format of Find Text' and 'Format of Replace Text'
   + #2 'Find - Text Format' and 'Replace - Text Format'
   + #3 'Find Text - Format' and 'Replace Text - Format'
   + #4 'Search text formatting' and 'Replace text formatting'
 (+1 Thomas, description "text" good to know what formatting)
   + #5 'Search for formatting' and 'Replace with formatting' (+2)
   => will take this input and ask a few more people (Jay)

Re: Agenda for the design/UX meeting 2017-Dec-13

2017-12-13 Thread Heiko Tietze
Present: (Csongor), Jay, Thomas, Heiko

 * Show the Preview in dialogs left or right of the content
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=89605
   + +1 for the request as we started this at other dialogs (Heiko)
   + shrink from left instead of right (Csongor)
   => full agreement to move the preview to the right as on most other dialogs

 * Removal of x to close the sidebar deck
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=91508
   + requires to change the HIG
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/SideBar
   => full agreement to keep the current state because of consistency, it's
  described in the HIG, and there is no alternative function to keep the
  tabbar open

 * Hard English string & UI freezeWeek 51 , Dec 18, 2017 - Dec 24, 2017
   + bullet list style names => AI Jay
 https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=106988
   + Input from Stuart & Adolfo needed on
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=114013
   + Customization
 + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=113590
 => will handle it (Jay)

 + New gradients
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=114006
   + proposals attached to the ticket
   + would be nice to have more input from community and do the full cleanup
during 6.1 cycle (Jay)
   => no objection to go ahead

 * Ultra-contextual toolbar
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=114318
   + introduce as a new toolbar variant, or notebookbar, or extension
   + would hate it (Csongor)
   + do not include as classic toolbar neither as notebookbar
   => extension? sounds good

 * Improve internal file picker or just accept this as a workaround
   + Improvement idea: https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=88180
   + Meta ticket: https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87860
 + 20 issues and requests
   + flag as obsolete with 6.0 and remove with 6.2 when Qt5 is done (Heiko)
   + some webprotocols are not-that-well-supported in native dialogs (cloph)
   + adds consistency over OS'es (Thomas)
   + Maxim's comment on the dialog -
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=79803#c21
 (kde4 and VCL gen)
   + if functionality can be replaced we should do that
   => to the ESC with the proposal

Minutes from the UX/design meeting 2018-Sep-12

2018-09-12 Thread Heiko Tietze
Present: Cor, Heiko

 * Objections to enlarged icons on hover in online help?
   + patch: https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/#/c/60053/
   + The effect is really annoying and I can’t think of any user
experience-related benefit this might have (Adolfo)
   + There are upvotes in our chats (Olivier)
   + sample page
https://help.libreoffice.org/6.2/en-US/text/simpress/02/1008.html?DbPAR=IMPRESS#bm_id3149050

   + minor issue: all icons including the one on notification bars for example
are enlarged on hoover
   => WFM, no reverting/modification needed (Cor, Heiko)

 * Image caption, inconsistency: caption for images is now "figure" and no
longer "illustration"
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=119738
   + WF, as there is no working solution
   + Serious concerns (Cor)
   + Issues due to equal translation of different captions
   + keep the last used caption enabled over sessions resp. store with template
(Heiko)
 + having no category like it is the fact for legacy documents could go
with Illustration
   + looks good; want some more time though to investigate (Cor)
   + Captions and languages always were not friends, see bug 104089 (Lendo)
   => bring up to ESC to find a good solution code-wise

 * There isn't tool Gradient from toolbar Transformations on Sidebar
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=119689
   + WFM, no all features are needed on the sidebar (Heiko)
 + ideally the sidebar provides only a dropdown for predefined gradients
   + agree that the HIG says so (Cor)
 + it looks however that people start / want more and more available there..
   + would be nice to have this nice and useful tool on a more prominent
position (Cor)
 + how about the context menu; needs investigations what happens when no
gradient is active
   => WFM, if there is no good position for the feature

 * Add 'Insert Column Break' to context menu for multi-column-sections
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37276
   => WFM (Cor, Heiko)

 * Direct formatting control text Highlighting mode not toggling off
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=119753
   + WFM (Heiko, c5)
   + need more pondering (Cor)
   => postponed

 * Default set of Impress graphic styles
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=94369
   + proposal in c14, feedback needed
   => looks good (Cor)

 * No keyboard shortcuts for next/previous heading
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=119665
   + there is a command "Go to next table formula" but with no shortcut assigned
   + introducing a new UNO command for Next/Prev heading makes sense
   => change the summary accordingly; ideally with have one uno command for
those actions with a modifier

 * Add "Calculate All" to menu "Data\Calculate"
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=119671
   + dont see a reason against this function (Cor)
   => go for it

 * Default Page Margins - Revisited
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=119395
   + the default of 2cm is good since more users have the metric system
   + making the template depending on the locale setting is desirable
   + there is likely a request on BZ for settings according the locale (Cor)
   => DUP (or accept otherwise)

   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=108890

   + Load/Save (+1 Cor)

2017-11-22 Thread Heiko Tietze
Present: Thomas, Csongor, Jay, Heiko

 * Vertical alignment of images anchored as character
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87742
   + screenshot -
https://bug-attachments.documentfoundation.org/attachment.cgi?id=111368
   + WF because alignment depend on use case; center is as good as top (Heiko,
Csongor)
   + Top is better than centered, ideally first line at top, last at bottom
(Thomas)
   => no objection but not worth the effort

 * Toggle read access at statusbar
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=86303
   + no need for this feature in the sb => WF (Heiko)
   + use case: multiple open documents where some are secured by the function
(Csongor)
   + 2x pro the suggestion, 1x no opinion, 1x con
   => go

 * Shortcut for Double Underline in all modules
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=113939
   + if we do that it requires to switch from ctrl+D to shift+ctrl+U in Writer
(Heiko)
   + advantage of consistency but have a better shortcut (Thomas)
   => go with shift+ctrl+U for double underline for all modules

 * Change string from 'Left' to 'Default' or 'Start' or code 'Right' entry
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=98211
   => postponed for Stuart

 * Removal of tango, breeze and libreoffice palettes
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=113858
   + at least LibreOffice should remain as it is our branding (Heiko)
   + Thomas, Jay pro cleaning up
   + keep LibO, remove Tango/Breeze (Csongor)
   + better names for LibO? (Thomas)
  + idea has been refused last year
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104053
   => keep going

 * Removal of Open Sans, PT_Serif, Source Sans/Code fonts (Jay)
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=103080
   + ESC were against removing of Libertine and DejaVu
   + would still like to remove Open Sans, PT_Serif, Source Sans Pro
 and Source Code that were added in 4.0 and 4.4 now that we are
 bundling Noto Sans and Noto Serif families.
 + we dont bundle Source Serif Pro as it isnt available in italics
   https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=79022
   + like many different fonts (Csongor)
   + hate many different fonts, esp. when not installed via distro management
(Heiko)
   + no opinion, don't like too much very similar fonts (Thomas)
   + be mindful of fallback for unique glyphs, U+1f512 for example--Source Code
Pro our only location (Stuart)
  + what did we do before Source Code Pro was added in 4.0? (Jay)
  + shove them into OpenSymbol, the Emoji support has been painful (Stuart)
   => AI: ESC should confirm removal of the three

 * Optimal column width
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=113604
(auto size behavior, "style" instead of direct formatting)
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=113960
(table properties: col sizing tedious)
   + solution could include UI proposal from
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=113603
   + Working With Tables in Writer -
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1D212Ihf8BYVOa1VjSPifq4sO_Cq4CZPhC0vya68zk3c
   => would be a cool GSoC project, needs a design session
   => keep tickets but do not make small patches
