Re: [Kicad-developers] [RFC] Application naming

2017-02-02 Thread Pedro Martin

Hi Clemens,

This topic has been discussed many times, it is always controversial.

A part to buy, i.e. named "LTC6362CMS8" comes already with all the information
to be placed in the suitcase - it has exactly one type of footprint (here MSOP-8, JEDEC
MO-187-AA). I don't see any reason to assign different footprints to parts, because they
usually have only one.

I wish I could always work the way you say. But I can't.

These days, I'm designing a circuit with diodes, caps and inductors. I
make the schematic and I will make the final layout.

In the meantime, other people will work with my schematic testing
different diodes, inductors and caps, smd and through hole.

Until the final test is approved we will not go to pcbnew. Then I'll
assign the footprints and part numbers.

Other times we use DIP for test and SOIC for production.

Kicad allows different ways of working. Fantastic!

Regards,
Pedro.

2017-02-09 Thread Pedro Martin

Hi Orson, Wayne

First, good videos at FOSDEM.

Duplicate zone as in OpenGL canvas or duplicate zone onto layer as in
legacy canvas, deserves its own menu entry.

One of them is enough for me. I use this feature in almost every board.
Sometimes I duplicate the zone into another layer, sometimes I duplicate
the zone into the same layer, move the zone and change the net afterwards.

Only done once per design... if everything goes alright at the first
attempt. Most times zones need resize and/or move corners.

What makes hard to work with OpenGL canvas for tracks and zones is the
fact that their menu is not accessible from the track or zone tool, but
from the arrow tool.

Or maybe I have not set the tools correctly.

I agree it is a common thing to have a GND zone on both sides of a
board, so they could be created by drawing one zone and then duplicating
it to the other side. The thing is, such operation is usually done once
per design, but it always shows up in the menu.

I think it used be much more useful when there was no Duplication tool.
Now two operations (duplicate & edit properties) are replaced with
'duplicate zone onto layer', saving you maybe 2 clicks per design. I
wonder if this kind operation deserves its own menu entry.

Hi, in my opinion as Kicad user, the way to proceed with the current
implementation should be:

1) Copy the design in eeschema
2) In eeschema push to PCBNew
3) Layout a single section.
4) Duplicate that section in EESCHEMA as many times as needed
5) Update pcb from schematic
6) Layout the remaining sections (with replicate layout plugin, for example)
7) Re-annotate the layout in pcbnew
8) Push the new annotation to the schematic.

In my case, I usually make my designs with hierarchical sheets. I have
all the sections of the schematic finished before starting the layout,
so steps 3 and 4 are interchanged.
But of course, many times some components must be added to the schematic
after the layout is in progress.

[Kicad-developers] pcbnew block repetition feature

2016-10-18 Thread Pedro Martin

Hi,

I want to add a new feature to pcbnew: block repetition, replication or
whatever its name is.

I have already tested my program, but it is a C program (I'm a disaster
as a C++ programmer) working outside Kicad.

So I need some help from other developers while I learn C++...

If someone is interested in collaborating in this feature, help is more
than welcome!

My program places block modules in the same relative positions as an
original block that has been placed by hand.
It is very useful when the layout has at least two twin circuits with
dozens of modules.

How do I define a block? A block is integrated by all the components
into a hierarchical sheet. Two hierarchical sheets with the same
hierarchical file are two twin blocks.

Unfortunately, it takes me some manual steps to extract the blocks from
the .sch file, order the items by hierarchical sheet, read the
coordinates of each module of the first sheet, set the coordiantes of
the rest of the modules and edit the kicad_pcb file with the new module
coordinates.

Furthermore, I'm sure this is not the way it must be done.

Regards,
Pedro.

Re: [Kicad-developers] pcbnew block repetition feature

2016-10-18 Thread Pedro Martin

Hi Clemens,

I'm thinking only of modules-footprints, since copy&paste tracks and
zones is very easy with copy block.

Of course, your examples are welcome.

My thought was something like this:
1- Place the components of a block
2- Select one item of the block and open a window showing a grid with
  a. All the twin components in the same .sch file
  b. Blank cells for the X and Y coordinates of each component
3- The user must fill the cells with relative distances from the
selected item in step 2.

4- The program recalculates the positions of every footprint.

For example R101 and R102 in block one, R201 and 202 in block 2, R301
and R302 in block 3 and so on.

R101 is at (30.00 , 25.00) and R102 at (35.00 , 27.00)
I fill the grid with 20 and 0 for R201 and 40 and 0 for R301

Finally, I get R201 at (50.00 , 25.00), R202(55.00 , 27.00)
R301 at (70.00 , 25.00) and R302 at (75.00 , 27.00)

And there is no need to go to the schematic, even though we are using
the .sch file to read the components.

Easy to say, complex to program with my C++ level.

Thanks!
Pedro.

It is called Physical Design Reuse (PDR) at least in
some professional EDA toolchains.

Usually you select some objects in the layout to create a "Reuse". Then
you can safe/load/recreate that and pick suitable component references,
netnames, etc. out of the schematics in an intelligent way and place
the "Reuse(s)" in your Layout i.e. in an array.

If you need some details/ideas, I migh be able to provide some examples

[Kicad-developers] Wish: new eeschema file format

2016-11-02 Thread Pedro Martin

Hi,

Currently, eeschema keeps information of deleted hierarchical sheets
into their bound .sch file.

In the project I have now, there were 5 hierarchical sheets with the
same file. After deleting 2 of these hieralchical sheets, their
information (a line for every component) remains in the common .sch file.

Only if I create a 6th sheet, the 2 deleted sheets disappear from the
.sch file.

Also, if I create a hieralchical sheet with only one instance and the
delete the whole sheet, the .sch file still remains in the project folder.

This behaviour has no impact in the circuit, the layout or the netlist.
Anyway, I think the less garbage, the better.

Just a tip for the new eeschema file format environment.

Pedro.

So it is already implemented in the legacy canvas:

At the previous day job, we did VME and CompactPCI single-board
computers, and the layout people took advantage of full-up Specctra
autorouting. The designs had a lot of wide parallel buses and
suchlike which could be autorouted, but there was still plenty of
stuff on those boards which needed to be routed manually. And
setting up constraints for the autorouter was still a couple of days
work.

At the current job everything is smaller. Each product has multiple
boards that need to connect correctly. Boards are mixed signal, they
have power supply parts, there are connectors that poke through the
enclosure, etc etc etc and suffice it to say we never autoroute.
Assisted routing, like the Kicad push-and-shove, and Altiums bus
routing (a feature Id like to see in Kicad, for sure!) goes a long
way.

> I'm guessing auto-routers appeal to hobbyists rather than
professionals.

How many questions on forums do you see from hobbyists asking about
how to autoroute, or wondering if the results from the autorouter
are good?

No

If so, we need to say that in the UI. Right now if you add two
models, selecting between them has no effect. (That makes sense
if the above is true and you as a user have figured that out, but
is confusing as all heck otherwise.)

But that also means you might want to order them (so that a
preferred one will be selected over a fall-back if both plugins
are available), no?

Or is it for some other reason entirely?

Sometimes you would like to add myltiple models to a footprint.

There is a subtle but important feature. It will render a wrl model
over a step file, because users with wrl models use them for more
control over surface properties, but will still be able to export a
step assembly if the model exists with the same name as the wrl, but
just with the stp extension. See Maurices freecad script tool.

On that, I don't really think we need to do much in the GUI other that
what is done now.

One feature that is a bit wonky is the preview when browsing for a
model. It is not a standard opem file dialog because it was not
possible to add the preview pane in wx on all platforms to the native
file selector. It was decided to have the one we have now for cross
platform consistency.

Thanks,
Jeff.

Re: [Kicad-developers] What is the purpose of multiple 3D models?

2018-03-31 Thread Pedro Martin

Jeff, do you mean transistor+heatsink or .wrl & .step?

For transistor+heatsink I just add both models to the 3D shape names list.

For .wrl and .step the models must be checked individually, because if
both models are in the list, they get overlapped and I don't know which
one is being selected. In fact, I believe both are selected and I see
"only one" because they are identical.

I got my models with the freecad kicad-stepup export tool.

Regards,
Pedro.

GerbView was easy because it already has an auxiliary horizontal toolbar.

However, Eeschema does not, meaning that if we added one we’d be giving up
significant screen real-estate.

Another option would be to put it in the main horizontal toolbar, but then we’d
have to drop some stuff that is currently in it. Candidates might include:
- page settings
- paste (we manage to get by without it in PcbNew)
- redraw (on the few screen glitches I’ve seen this button hasn’t helped anyway)
- footprint editor (not in current menus; should be added to Tools whether we
remove the tool icon or not)
- BOM (not in the current menus; should be added to File > Export whether we
remove the tool icon or not)
- update PCB
- back-annotate (needs to be added to Tools menu either way)

So,

a) leave Eeschema without grid/zoom dropdowns
b) trim toolbar icons and add dropdowns to main toolbar
c) add an auxiliary toolbar
d) something I haven’t thought of

Thoughts appreciated.

Re: [Kicad-developers] Visible Items on different canvases

2018-01-04 Thread Pedro Martin

Hi Andr,

I have just checked the behaviour of pcbnew in my copies of kicad 4.0.7
ubuntu and nightly 20170925 ubuntu.

-If F.Fab is set, values and references can be set/unset in the render tab.
-If F.Fab is unset, values and references are hidden no matter if they
are set or unset.

The same for F.Silk, B.Silk and B.Fab.

Both in legacy and opengl modes.

Regards,
Pedro.

Hi Nick,

I try to detail it again and hope I can make clear what I mean:
- currently you can in 4.0.7 Legacy canvas
  * toggle the Value and Reference option in Visibility:Elements.
  When you do that:
  * Value/Reference are displayed or hidden according to the status of
the Element control.
The state of the _Layer option_ F.SilkS/B.SilkS and F.Fab/B.Fab have
_no influence_ on the visibility of Value/Reference.

- when you switch to OpenGL or Cairo Value/Reference _disappear_ on the
PCB when F.SilkS/B.SilkS and F.Fab/B.Fab are _unset_ in the Layer
options regardless that Value/Reference option are set in Elements.
Value/Reference are in OpenGL/Cairo only _displayed_ when *.SilkS/*.Fab
are _set_ *and* the Element control for Value/Reference are set.

This is independent from the actual PCB project. (I tried it on three
different projects)
In the current Nightly all canvases act the same as OpenGL/Cairo in
4.0.7. (Legacy in 4.0.7 behaves differently as Legacy in Nightly.)

I hope this made it clearer.

  Andr

Hi everyone,

I discovered some not consistent behaviour in the current stable
release:
On the Legacy canvas you can display Value of the footprint by
enabling Value option under Elements in the Visibility menu.
This is not true for OpenGL and Cairo canvas.
In the Nightly from 2018-01-02 Legacy shows the
same behaviour as OpenGL and Cairo. There Value is only visible
when F.Fab is visible.
This means 5.0 will show consistent behaviour over all canvases. Fine.
The same is true with References and F.SilkS layer.

What is missing with this solution is the possibility to be able
to only display Value/Reference of a footprint as the current
stable release Legacy canvas allows. (I really like this feature
because it removes a lot of visual noise on the PCB during layout
design).

I don't understand you. There is still the toggle for references and
values in the render (elemente) tab. I don't understand why you
exemplify it with 4.0.7 when you say there is no regression. Please
illustrate what you would like to have and attach an example kicad_pcb
file, it is easier to comment on that.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1741015

I do think the behaviour of Legacy was always there, therefore my
confusion with the Values and References not visible when
switching canvases.
Is there any chance that in future there will be an option (again)
to toggle Value and Reference visibility independently from F.Fab
and F.Silks?

Best Regards,
  Andr
