[Kernel-packages] [Bug 830915] Re: Error during kernel upgrade: Could not locate dkms.conf file

2019-02-11 Thread cement_head
@nazar-pc I have no idea what you are talking about. "remove any
directories from old modules you had in past and do not have installed
anymore" doesn't mean anything to me at all. What "any directories"?
Can someone please provide step-by-step instructions for all of this?

There was a typo in instructions (/etc/preferences.d should have been

As result you might have upgraded Linux META packages and therefor you won't

  I suggest you move
/etc/preferences.d/canonical-kernel-team-ubuntu-ppa-yakkety to
/etc/apt/preferences.d/ and downgrade related packages:

Title:
  Bluetooth LE pairing fail

Status in OEM Priority Project:
  Confirmed
Status in bluez package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in bluez source package in Xenial:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [Impact]

When the Bluetooth adapter is not powered on it is not possible to use
it in normal way. We used to have a hack to force powering on by using
an udev rule but this doe snot work anymore. Luckily the BlueZ has
introduced "AutoEnable" option that makes the stack power on adapters by
  itself.

Backporting this to xenial will improve life of the desktop users and
will not require them to hack the solution on their own. The fix itself
uses the well known solution to this problem that is floating around
  there for a while.

The upload fixes the bug by enabling the 'AutoEnable' option in the
  bluetoothd config file.

  [Original Report]

. 15.10 we now have bluez 5 so we can pair BLE devices like the
  Microsoft Arc Touch Bluetooth Mouse.

But this pairing doesn't work very well. Mouse is seen but pairing fail.
  More information: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104011#c5

This is due to udev rule that use "hcitool" to power on device.
Hopefully, bluez 5.35 has a new parameter "AutoEnable" who can be used
  instead of udev rules.

here is a commit with this parameter:
  http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~guilhem-fr/bluez/autoenable/revision/138

  [Test Case]

  On xenial install from ppa:
  https://launchpad.net/~bluetooth/+archive/ubuntu/bluez

Now reboot the machine. The BT adapter shall be
  powered on.

  [Regression Potential]

If things go wrong the adapter will not be powered on after the system
boots up. Therefore while testing please focus on the adapter state,
  i.e. powered on or off.

  [Other Info]

This fix is included in the development release, see:
  http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~bluetooth/bluez/ubuntu-zesty/revision/22

  [What to upload]

  For xenial as in:

  )
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/347480725/bluez_5.37-0ubuntu5_5.37-0ubuntu5.2~build1.diff.gz

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1559308] Re: Plugging HDMI screen in causes system hang

2017-10-21 Thread cement_head
@aluvian This might be a longshot, but you might try adding the System76
PPA and installing their nVIDIA driver. The reason? All of their
laptops are custom spec'd laptops made by CLEVO, so thier custom tweaks
might help you. The other thing to try and helped my situation (I do
not have the nVIDIA driver) is to download the Intel Linex Driver tool
and run that.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1634449] Re: Black flicker when leaving monitor

2017-08-09 Thread cement_head
I also found this bug using the HWE stack.

System76 Lemur 6 (i7-6500U CPU Skylake GT2 HD520) running 16.04.3 LTS

Flicker occurs on return from black monitor to screens after screen has
been turned off. Worse with a second monitor plugged in. Resolution is
to click on the workplace switcher and then select a screen (1/4).

Title:
  Black flicker when leaving monitor

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
Sometimes, when moving cursor from one monitor to the other, the
external monitor turns black and gets back on again.

The hardware is Dell Latitude E5470 with Docking Station and monitor
connected via DisplayPort (checked both ports and happens on both of
  them).

Everything worked correctly on Ubuntu 16.04, but it happens on Ubuntu
  16.10. Kernel 4.8.0-25-generic.

The bug isn't related to cursor only, if focus changes by alt+tab it
  sometimes happens as well.

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1553503 This is the same
bug as this one, but closed.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1559308] Re: Plugging HDMI screen in causes system hang

2016-05-09 Thread cement_head

Title:
Plugging HDMI screen in causes system hang

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
I have a 4K UHD laptop screen and am running Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 Beta1
using 4.4.0-13-generic and the Nouveau drivers.

If I plug in an external HDMI monitor (FHD) either into either HDMI
port (there's one on the machine and there's one available via a usb
3.1 extra adaptor) then the whole system hangs, completely
unresponsive and needing a hard reboot. Before hanging the 2nd display
gets an image as expected, but the laptop's screen flashes randomly,
sometimes you see weird artifacts. Then the hang comes.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1559308] Re: Plugging HDMI screen in causes system hang

2016-05-11 Thread cement_head
@tjaalton

To manually install an upstream kernel I would need to install the
packages in purple (not blue) for an AMD64 machine?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1559308] Re: Plugging HDMI screen in causes system hang

2016-05-11 Thread cement_head
BTW, a handy-dandy GUI-based tool to have installed to test different
kernels is the GRUB-CUSTOMIZER package. Please DO NOT uninstall the
"stock" 4.4.x kernel, you may to fall-back to it if the upstream kernel
doesn't work.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1559308] Re: Plugging HDMI screen in causes system hang

2016-05-11 Thread cement_head
4.6.0-rc7 works with no issues with regards to plugging in HDMI or VGA
on a System76 Lemur (6 generation Intel i7500 with the HD 520 Sky Lake
on-board GPU).

Plugging HDMI screen in causes system hang

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Title:
Plugging HDMI screen in causes system hang

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

2016-05-17 Thread cement_head
Okay. Kernel update 4.4.0-22.40 is working without issues, plugging in
HDMI, plugging in VGA (probably HDMI>VGA on-board) is also working
without issue(s).

Looks as though this finally got fixed - it's a bit ridiculous that this
took so long for an LTS kernel on a widely used chipset (Intel HD / Sky
Lake).

Anyway, thanks!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1559308] Re: Plugging HDMI screen in causes system hang

2016-05-17 Thread cement_head
I should mention that I have the Xorg Edgers PPA enabled and use their
graphics drivers (stack).

Although I think that Xenial is pretty up-to-date right now...

@christoforos-samaras How do you update the Sky Lake firmware once
you've downloaded the tar ball? Do you just run the install script?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1242321] Re: USB 3.0 Harddrive not recognised

2016-04-24 Thread cement_head
This "bug" report is as a result of BAD USB 3.0 protocols implemented by
the manufacturers of the devices. And has nothing to do with Linux.
Please file a bug report with the manufacturers.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1242321] Re: USB 3.0 Harddrive not recognised

2016-05-25 Thread cement_head
Again, this is NOT a LINUX problem. This is a manufacturer of your USB
3.0 device problem. They (the manufacturer) is NOT following the xHCI
USB 3.0 specs and therefore the device does not work properly. In other
words, it's likely the external HDD, not the machine, nor the O/S
(Ubuntu).

The reason your USB 3.0 device works in Windows, is that (a) either
Microsoft wrote some hacky drivers for the bad device, or (b) the
manufacturer of the device submitted a "driver" to Microsoft so that
it's sub-standard firmware/hardware would work on Windows.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1559308] Re: Plugging HDMI screen in causes system hang

2016-05-30 Thread cement_head
@dev1 Does your bug occur when using an upstream kernel?

You can test by (a) installing GRUB Customizer
(https://launchpad.net/~danielrichter2007/+archive/ubuntu/grub-
customizer) and then installing (b) an upstream kernel, say 4.6.x
(http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2016/05/install-linux-
kernel-4-6-ubuntu-16-04/).

The run GRUB customizer and choose the 4.6 kernel. Reboot & test. If
something goes wrong, choose your old kernel and uninstall the 4.6.x
kernel.

I've also seen this bug with Sky Lake and the mini-display to VGA
adapters. But I agree with @tjaalton, I do not think this is your bug.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1970957] Re: suspend problem

2022-06-17 Thread cement_head
Can people confirm whether or not there is a USB device (dock/eGPU/eHDD)
plugged into the TB4/TB3 USB-C port when attempting to suspend? Or, was
there previously a device plugged in, but has since been removed. I
***think*** this is an issue that is related to the USB subsystem not
being properly unloaded at suspend and reloaded on resume.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1970957] Re: suspend problem

2022-06-17 Thread cement_head
@allan-brighton I don't think this is a bug per se, but rather a
deliberate change in behaviour in the kernel. In other words, the way
the kernel is handling the TB4/TB3 ports is now different in 22.04 as
opposed to 20.04.
