Title:
Static sound on Left Channel with hda-intel STAC 9221 A1

Status in Linux:

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: kernel-image-2.6.27-2-generic-di

I get static from only the left channel even on a clean install of
8.04.1. Now I have upgraded to 8.10 and I have the same issue.

I have a dell dimension 9150 with codec stac 9221 A1 that loads hda-
  intel.

I found a workaround to my problem which consists of simply rebooting
the machine, then the static is gone. But when I shut down and
restart, the static is back. It is a slight pain booting twice every
  time to get acceptable sound.

I've tried different programs, different devices
(pulseaudio/oss/alsa), lowering the sliders in the volume control but
  with no luck.

Should I include any other files/info?

  Thanks

2024-11-02 Thread Paul White
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

If this is still a problem then please execute the following command
only once, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a
terminal:

  apport-collect 2086137

and then change the status of the bug to 'New'.

I've removed a sentence from the bug description. Such comments won't
help getting issues resolved.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2062951] Re: Random flickering with Intel i915 (Gen9 GPUs in 6th-8th gen CPUs) on Linux 6.8

2024-11-02 Thread Bernard Moreton
The kernel upgrade to 6.8.0-47 made a noticeable improvement to the
mouse/pointer problems on my Dell Inspiron, and 6.8.0-48 has now fixed
most of them - thank you!

BUT I still have one problem left: for years I've had the touchpad
disabled, and used a USB mouse, as being easier to control properly.
Since the 24.04.1 LTS upgrade (and the 6.8 kernel), the touchpad has
become sensitive to taps, so context menus appear frequently as my wrist
moves over the touchpad, and sometimes when the pointer is over a link,
a wrist movement over the touchpad can open that link.

This may want a separate report, of course. If so, please guide as to
the appropriate package. But it seems to be bound up with the screen
flicker that is the subject of this bug; and having two sources for
mouse-keys must be a source of confusion for the system ...

Bug description:
  SRU Justification

  [Impact]
The flickering predominantly occurs when the mouse cursor is in the bottom
quarter of the screen and stops when the cursor leaves this area.
Extensive testing across various kernel versions revealed that the issue
became apparent from kernel version 6.8.0 onward, correlating with the
mentioned configuration changes, CONFIG_INTEL_IOMMU_DEFAULT_ON and
CONFIG_INTEL_IOMMU_SCALABLE_MODE_DEFAULT_ON.
The problem persists in the latest drm tip.

  [Fix]
As an immediate workaround, adding 'intel_iommu=igfx_off' to the kernel
command line has been found to effectively eliminate the flickering issue.
This patch proposes the same behavior as 'intel_iommu=igfx_off' and apply the
rule to all Intel SKL GPU IDs.

  [Test]
  1. Boot up to desktop with 6.8.0-x kernels
  2. Moving cursor around the desktop
  3. There should be no flicker while cursor is moving

  [Where problems could occur]
For virtualized environments using hardware-assisted virtualization for
graphics (such as VFIO or mediated pass-through), disabling IOMMU for graphics
could either disable these features or reduce their security and efficiency.
Usually, users pass the 'intel_iommu=on' by themselves when they are using
related features. So, the impact of this change is minimal.

  ===

After migrating Mantic 23.10 install to Linux 6.8.0, I am experiencing heavy
flickering at random.
It happens after a moderate to heavy on screen activity like window
switching, scrolling etc.
It never happens when playing video or when there is no interaction using
keyboard/pointer.

It tend to happen when the mouse cursor is in the bottom quarter of the
screen and stops immediately when the cursor leaves that screen region.
Around the same time the following appears in kernel log:
kernel: i915 :00:02.0: [drm] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO underrun

Happens on both X11 and Wayland on both KDE plasma and Mate (though
  less).

I first encountered the issue with Linux 6.8.0-11 and it still happens with
Ubunutu's 6.8.0-28 and Mainline 6.8.7.
Kernels 6.6, 6.5, 6.1 and older did not have that issue.

Hardware is: Dell XPS 9350, Vendor Intel, Driver i915, Skylake GT2 [HD
Graphics 520]
  Software: Ubuntu 23.10, KDE Plasma 5.27.10 / Mate 1.26

  Attaching kernel log for 6.8.0-28

CONFIG_INTEL_IOMMU_SCALABLE_MODE_DEFAULT_ON.
The problem persists in the latest drm tip.

  [Fix]
As an immediate workaround, adding 'intel_iommu=igfx_off' to the kernel
command line has been found to effectively eliminate the flickering issue.
This patch proposes the same behavior as 'intel_iommu=igfx_off' and apply the
rule to all Intel SKL GPU IDs.

  [Test]
  1. Boot up to desktop with 6.8.0-x kernels
  2. Moving cursor around the desktop
  3. There should be no flicker while cursor is moving

  [Where problems could occur]
For virtualized environments using hardware-assisted virtualization for
graphics (such as VFIO or mediated pass-through), disabling IOMMU for graphics
could either disable these features or reduce their security and efficiency.
Usually, users pass the 'intel_iommu=on' by themselves when they are using
related features. So, the impact of this change is minimal.

  ===

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2086549] [NEW] Intel Iris Xe Graphics: System freeze with kernel 6.8.0-48 on TigerLake (Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS)

2024-11-02 Thread Alistair White
Public bug reported:

Description:
After upgrading to kernel 6.8.0-48-generic (version 6.8.0-48.48~22.04.1, via
unattended upgrade on Nov 1st, 2024), my system experiences complete freezes
requiring hard reboot.

Expected behavior:
- System should remain stable and responsive
- Graphics should function normally

Actual behavior:
- System freezes completely within minutes of booting
- Requires hard reboot (power button hold)
- Logs show error: "i915 :00:02.0: [drm] *ERROR* The master control
interrupt lied (DE PIPE)!"

System information:
- Ubuntu version: 22.04.4 LTS (jammy)
- Kernel package: linux-image-6.8.0-48-generic (6.8.0-48.48~22.04.1)
- Hardware: Dell laptop with Intel TigerLake-LP GT2 [Iris Xe Graphics]
- Previous kernel 6.8.0-47-generic worked correctly
- Current workaround: Using kernel 5.15.0-124-generic which works properly

Steps to reproduce:
1. Boot with kernel 6.8.0-48-generic
2. System freezes within minutes
3. No specific trigger action required - happens during normal use

Title:
  kernel bug 6.8.0-11 Ubuntu 24.04 with MT7921

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Ubuntu Noble Numbat (development branch) x86_64
The problem is this: there is an error with the Wi-Fi driver MT7921
  [ 825.412953] mt7921e :04:00.0: Message 00020007 (seq 8) timeout
  [  825.413273] mt7921e :04:00.0: PM: dpm_run_callback():

  [ 825.413296] mt7921e :04:00.0: PM: failed to resume async: error -110

And I found a ready-made patch for it that solves the problem
  https://github.com/ShadowBlip/rz608-fix

And after this simple script the problem disappears
I'll attach the logs before and after I made this patch.
Add this solution to your distribution. Better yet, contact the people who
are responsible for the kernel and add it there so that it is global and
applies to all distributions, because I noticed the same thing in Fedora.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2084971] Re: Unable to change power modes from balanced

2024-11-02 Thread zeldaoot
Sorry for the delay, I've been busy.

I hadn't tried doing that but i tried it now and nothing changed again.
Putting an underscore instead of a dash also didn't change anything.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2080693] Re: Not resuming from suspend - Thinkpad E460

2024-11-02 Thread Manuel Pégourié-Gonnard
For what it's worth, the problem persists with the 6.8.0-48-generic
kernel.

Also, I've tried building the kernel locally in order to hopefully
commit-bisect the issue. Turns out my locally compiled 6.6.19 does not
exhibit the problem, while 6.6.19 from the mainline kernel ppa does.

I've done the following changes to the config:
1. make localmodconfig (to cut on compilation time and disk usage)
2. scripts/config --disable SYSTEM_TRUSTED_KEYS && scripts/config --disable
SYSTEM_REVOCATION_KEYS (I was getting errors about files not being found)
3. disabled CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO_BTF because I was running out of memory at that
stage
4. disabled zstd module compression because I was getting errors like `SSL
error:1080:BIO routines::no such file: ../crypto/bio/bss_file.c:7` at the
stage where the modules are signed.

I'm not sure which of these changes is likely to explain why my locally
compiled kernel works while the one from the ppa doesn't (as far as
waking up from suspend is concerned), but I thought I'd share the info
in case it rings a bell to someone.

Title:
Not resuming from suspend - Thinkpad E460

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
After a routine upgrade which installed the 6.8 kernel, my laptop
(Lenovo Thinkpad E460) stopped resuming from suspend. I press keys,
hit the power button, but nothing works and I have to hard reboot in
  the end.

Everything worked nicely with the 6.5 kernel (6.5.0-45-generic) and
previous versions provided by Ubuntu since 5.15.0-40-generic (before
  that I was hit by
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1971437 with
  similar symptoms).

I tried version-bisecting the issue using the mainline kernel ppa, as
  in

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#Version_bisecting_upstream_kernels

The last good version is 6.6.18.

The first bad version is 6.6.19.

I'm happy to provide any further information that might be useful.
