[okular] [Bug 467522] New: Request for a new epub backend based on qt-webengine for Okular
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=467522 Bug ID: 467522 Summary: Request for a new epub backend based on qt-webengine for Okular Classification: Applications Product: okular Version: unspecified Platform: Archlinux OS: Linux Status: REPORTED Severity: normal Priority: NOR Component: EPub backend Assignee: okular-de...@kde.org Reporter: downloader...@gmail.com Target Milestone: --- **SUMMARY** The current epub backend in Okular is quite ineffective and has been the subject of numerous bug reports. I believe that a new backend based on qt-webengine could address many of these issues and greatly improve the performance and stability of Okular when viewing epub files. Furthermore, as qt-webengine is now a mandatory dependency of the Plasma desktop, it makes sense to take advantage of this technology in Okular as well. I understand that this may require a significant amount of development work, but I believe that the benefits of a new, more effective epub backend would greatly outweigh the costs. It is worth noting that currently, the most popular and effective EPUB viewer on Linux is Foliate, which utilizes webkit2gtk. However, given that Qt-webengine is a core dependency of Plasma desktop, it would make sense for Okular to also utilize this backend for EPUB viewing. This would improve the overall user experience and provide a more consistent integration with the KDE desktop environment. Thank you for considering this feature request. **SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS** Linux/KDE Plasma: Arch Linux KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.3 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.104 Qt Version: 5.15.8 -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.
[ghostwriter] [Bug 467928] New: Huge memory leaks when using ghostwriter
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=467928 Bug ID: 467928 Summary: Huge memory leaks when using ghostwriter Classification: Applications Product: ghostwriter Version: unspecified Platform: Archlinux OS: Linux Status: REPORTED Severity: critical Priority: NOR Component: general Assignee: megan.con...@kdemail.net Reporter: downloader...@gmail.com Target Milestone: --- Created attachment 157692 --> https://bugs.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=157692&action=edit System Activity screenshot of ghostwriter process SUMMARY Ghostwriter has a bug which cause a huge memory leak, it's unlimited and continues to make the system freeze, as you can see in the screenshot, in my case it reached to 811 mb of ram usage and if i continue to write it will goes on... Previously a bug on this was reported and author said that it's the qt-webengine issue not the ghostwriter, but you can see in screenshot that it's main process of ghost writer and not webengine's one, also i'm not using the preview pane. Tested with all backends and same leak : - multimarkdown - cmark - cmark-gfm for reproducing the bug you need to write the note yourself and go on, the leak happening while writing the note. My note's language is in Persian. STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Open ghostwriter and start writing more than 1000 words 2. Monitor the ram usage. 3. ghostwriter gradually will use all the system's ram and makes OS freeze. OBSERVED RESULT Ghostwriter's memory usage continuously increases until it reaches 811 MB or more, causing the system to freeze. EXPECTED RESULT Ghostwriter should not consume all the system's RAM, and the system should not freeze. Currently epub files with size of + 10 MB are impossible to load in okular, and will make the app freeze and need to kill, very light and simple epubs also are not easy and pleasant to read in okular. As qt5-webengine is a mandatory dependency of Plasma , okular needs a epub backend based on webengine and epub.js just like what foliate does in this way. STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Open a epub in okular 2. You will never have a good experience when reading it on okular 3.
