[kwin] [Bug 501243] New: Fullscreen operation of surface that doesn't cover whole output breaks when not in direct scanout

2025-03-08 Thread Oleg
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=501243

Bug ID: 501243
Summary: Fullscreen operation of surface that doesn't cover
whole output breaks when not in direct scanout
Classification: Plasma
   Product: kwin
   Version: 6.3.2
  Platform: Arch Linux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: wayland-generic
  Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: o...@np880.ru
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
According to xdg-shell protocol if the surface doesn't cover the whole output,
the compositor will position the surface in the center of the output and
compensate with border fill covering the rest of the output. In KWin it's only
work when direct scanout is engaged. When direct scanout doesn't work (HDR,
cursor drawing) KWin puts surface to the left side of the output and doesn't
fill borders with anything.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Make sure direct scanout won't engage
2. Launch any SDL3 (or SDL2 with sdl2-compat installed) application with next
environment variables: SDL_VIDEO_DRIVER=wayland
SDL_VIDEO_WAYLAND_MODE_SCALING=aspect
3. Set resolution with aspect ratio different from output's

OBSERVED RESULT
Surface would be moved to the left side of the output and borders won't be
filled with anything

EXPECTED RESULT
Surface should be treated just like with direct scanout.

Bug ID: 501239

Classification: Applications
   Product: systemsettings

I'm requesting to be able to set resolutions higher than the monitor allows, in
order to achieve supersampling anti-aliasing (SSAA).

That should allow to run old games that supports 4K (but not SSAA) to easily
run with SSAA in 1080p monitors.
It should also allow to visualize images more accurately.

For example, my NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 would allow 3840x2160p internal
resolution (4x anti-aliasing for my 1080p monitor).

Yes, verified and tested just now the systemd NVIDIA services are in order, as
well as the other settings. Plasmashell 6.2.4-1. I'm bandwidth restricted
currently and tried to update only the plasmashell tools to current but it
failed (plasmashell: symbol lookup error: plasmashell: undefined symbol:
_ZNK6Plasma6Corona9immutableEv).
Both the 6.6 and 6.12.7 and kernels have issues yet behave slightly
differently. With 6.6 I could switch tty and switch back to be able to hover
over the password dialog and type it blindly to be thrown into the desktop.
6.12.7 freezes for a couple of minutes and displays the desktop eventually.
I can test again when I'm able to do a full upgrade but this issue has been
with me across multiple distros and two machines.

Tested here under Linux and Windows, it is possible to switch to another
installed ExifTool version without any problems.
Note that we test by querying the ExifTool version to see if it is usable. If
the ExifTool version is too old or does not work correctly (missing rights?),
the path will not be changed. Debug log is urgently needed to analyze the
problem.

[kwin] [Bug 479250] Brief screen freeze when opening Thumbnail Grid tabbox or Overview (anything in KWin that loads KPipeWire window thumbnails)

2025-03-08 Thread thesword
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=479250

The issue still persists with kwin 6.3.2. The issue happens because kwin is
almost single threaded, see https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin/-/issues/174.
Only atomic commit operations have a dedicated thread, but this is no enough to
prevent missing frames because some components of Kwin such as animation
effects take more than 1 frame time to load and happen in the same thread as
the render, then we are observing screen stutters. A solution would be to
decouple the render, inputs and animations in dedicated threads.

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=501229

The plot thickens. Couple of thoughts:

a) is pipewire running and working?
b) is there something special about your setup? do you have a source build or
something of plasmashell/xdg-desktop-portal-kde/kwin? the "Cannot grant a token
to" specifically suggests that your plasmashell is getting rejected from
talking to kwin, which usually means kwin cannot find plasma's desktop file in
/usr/share/applications.

Hi,

As I had an urgent document to scan, I used the graphic application ‘Epson scan
2’ which works (not great).

So I hadn't thought that it could be a driver problem.

I have tried to uninstall epsonscan2; skanlite/skanpage starts up but cannot
find a scanner (of course). After reinstalling epsonscan2, the bug reappears.

I conclude that it is a bug caused by the epson driver. Unfortunately for me
it's the only one available.

Thank you for pointing me in this direction ; it's the only one I hadn't
considered.

For me the bug seems to be closed

Thank you for your time and help

Good afternoon.

sway-with-plasmashell-panels-positioned-correct

Today I was trying to fix this issue because its so annoying no one was trying
to solve it

i wasnt able to solve it yet, though. I found up that it looks like the issue
is not related to plasmashell; looks like it's related to kwin's implementation
of the layer-shell protocol. I'm not sure, but I think it's that KWin doesn't
handle the exclusiveZone correctly.

shortly what i did:
1- i cloned kde-builder and i ran kde-builder workspace to build plasma, then i
logged in to plasma development (wayland) session

2- i cloned https://github.com/wmww/gtk-layer-shell/ and fiddled around
gtk-layer-demo

3- then i created 3 panels (on the left side of the screen, all of them are fit
content; one is top, one is bottom, and one is center aligned).

4- i logged out and then logged into Sway and ran `plasmashell` command in
Sway.

5- The panels were correctly positioned (included in the attachment)

6- i have started to try to read and understand the code/logic behind the
panels and layer-shell implementation in kwin

2025-03-08 Thread Olivier BELLEUX
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=501183

Re-hi

Sometimes I have flashes of genius... without meaning to.

Since the scanner worked fine with Skanlite/Skanpage until recently, then I
just need to downgrade epsonscan2. Obviously it's no longer available on Epson
website... Which leads me to think that this could well be deliberately induced
software obsolescence.

Fortunately for me I regularly back up my data on 2 HDDs with Rsync and Borg.
So I take out the HDD, open Vorta, mount an archive from July 2024, in which I
find an old version of the driver. I installed it, ran Skanlite and Skanpage
and it worked again. Phew!

So the bug wasn't easy to identify, but it was simply fixed.

Once again, thank you and have a good evening.

Mirco, we need to increase the heif requirement to 1.14 in CMaKeLists (i think
it's when heif_context_add_XMP_metadata2 was introduced) or add some version
checks.

I'll leave it up to you.

I have replaced all instances of the "wallpaperplugin=org.kde.image" with
"wallpaperplugin=org.kde.slideshow" and also removed the following section:
wallpaperplugin=org.kde.slideshow[Containments][26][Wallpaper][org.kde.image][General]
Image=/home/andrija/Downloads/lwalpapers-PicturesOnly/wallpapers/b-908.jpg

After that, I have logged out and logged back in, but unfortunately that didn't
change anything for me :(

So still a mismatching colors for some directories and its child directories.

[kwin] [Bug 501242] New: Temporary disconnecting non-primary screen mess up screen indexing

2025-03-08 Thread Dominik Kummer
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=501242

Bug ID: 501242
Summary: Temporary disconnecting non-primary screen mess up
screen indexing
Classification: Plasma
   Product: kwin
   Version: 6.3.2
  Platform: Arch Linux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: multi-screen
  Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: ad...@arkades.org
  Target Milestone: ---

The display priority settings in display configuration does not correlate to
`randr --listmonitors` indices. Is that intentional?
I just experienced a situation where the second of three screens had to be
disconnected temporarly. After reconnecting it, its index became 3. This wrong
order persisted across reboot.
To restore the original indexing I had to connect primary and second screen.
Then reboot. Afterwards I had to connect the 3rd screen, and reboot again. Now
the original order was restored.

This looks like the correct crash, but you did not actually include the
backtrace. Please follow the instructions in the link I gave you, including the
"coredumpctl gdb [paste the number]". As it is, your report contains nothing we
can use to identify what the cause of the crash might be.

[xdg-desktop-portal-kde] [Bug 501244] New: Notifications created through the Notification portal do not have ActionInvoked signals emitted when clicked

2025-03-08 Thread Kye
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=501244

Bug ID: 501244
Summary: Notifications created through the Notification portal
do not have ActionInvoked signals emitted when clicked
Classification: Plasma
   Product: xdg-desktop-portal-kde
   Version: 6.2.5
  Platform: Arch Linux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: kylie...@gmail.com
CC: aleix...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
Notifications created through the Notification portal do not have ActionInvoked
signals emitted when clicked

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Create a notification with the Notification portal with an action. I'm doing
this by running an electron app with libnotify within a flatpak & executing
`new Notification("hi").onclick = () => console.log("clicked")`
2. Click the notification

OBSERVED RESULT
When clicking the notification no ActionInvoked signal is emitted. confirmed by
seeing no "clicked" log message. Running dbus-monitor shows the signal is not
fired.

EXPECTED RESULT
The signal is fired allowing the app to trigger actions while sandboxxed.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 6.3.2
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.11.0
Qt Version: 6.8.2

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
libnotify uses the raw dbus protocol when not sandboxed which is why this isnt
an issue for non-sandboxxed apps. ActionInvoked is triggered correctly on click
when creating the notification with the Notify method.

Thank you for the bug report!

However Plasma 6.2.5 is no longer eligible for support or maintenance from KDE;
supported versions are 5.27. (LTS), and 6.3 (non-LTS) or newer. Please upgrade
to a supported version as soon as your distribution makes it available to you.
Plasma is a fast-moving project, and bugs in one version are often fixed in the
next one.

If you need support for Plasma 6.2.5, please contact your distribution, who
bears the responsibility of providing support for older releases that are no
longer supported by KDE.

If you can reproduce the issue after upgrading to a supported version, feel
free to re-open this bug report.

[kwin] [Bug 501247] New: Shadow Rendering Error w/ Night Light/Built-in Color Profile on Prefer Efficiency

2025-03-08 Thread Michael
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=501247

Bug ID: 501247
Summary: Shadow Rendering Error w/ Night Light/Built-in Color
Profile on Prefer Efficiency
Classification: Plasma
   Product: kwin
   Version: 6.3.2
  Platform: Arch Linux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: night color
  Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: ramsburgmich...@tutanota.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
• With always-on "Night Light" enabled (default settings) and my monitor's
"Built-in" color profile on "Prefer efficiency" my shadows have a very
noticeable red tinge/opaqueness on black backgrounds.

I am using an AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT and a Dell S2421HGF (non-HDR). This
previously wasn't an issue when the color changes hit with 6.3, although I'm
not exactly sure when this broke for me. Probably with 6.3.2, as I didn't seem
to notice this on 6.3.1.

OBSERVED RESULT
https://files.catbox.moe/bw9hii.jpg

EXPECTED RESULT
Shadows being unnoticeable/black on a dark/black background (and not having a
red tinge).

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: Arch Linux 6.13.5-zen1-1-zen (64-bit)
KDE Plasma Version: 6.3.2
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.11.0
Qt Version: 6.8.2

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
• When I use the "None" color profile and "Prefer efficiency" OR "Prefer color
accuracy" everything renders as expected besides dark blues (which render more
purple than blue), although I suspect that is working as intended or is a quirk
of my monitor with night light on? It wasn't an issue prior to 6.3. I was
unable to take a photo that demonstrates the problem. Here is a link to the
background which renders unexpectedly: https://files.catbox.moe/dhu4lz.png

• When using the "Built-in" color profile and "Prefer color accuracy"
everything is working as intended.

• When night light is disabled, everything is perfectly fine, including dark
blues, regardless of settings.

"Time" surely does it. I am not sure about the others.

This crash is a catalyst of another AMDGPU crash that happens when I play
Marvel Rivals. In this instance and report, it happened when I merely opened
the OBS application.

This is par for the course when a crash like this happens. AMDGPU successfully
resets, but some of the applications refuse to open, some applications that can
open just lead to another crash, and some applications just open normally
without problems.

This behavior ONLY occurs post initial AMDGPU crash and reset when playing
Marvel Rivals, and ONLY if the GPU successfully resets. But, the behavior goes
away after a full system restart.

===

That said, my main issue is with Marvel Rivals. I have a random GPU crash that
happens ONLY when I play Marvel Rivals on Steam.

I've read on multiple threads that the RDNA 2 GPUs, specifically, don't play
too well with Unreal games.

One of the threads in question:
https://community.amd.com/t5/pc-graphics/my-rx-6800-keeps-crashing-to-desktop/m-p/441086/highlight/true#M71472

The link above mentioned a -100 MHz clock to both the stock minimum and boost
clocks, to prevent the GPU from voltage spiking. I did this using a custom
power profile in CoreCTRL that activates when the game launches.

It also mentioned the issue could be PSU power draw related, and the workaround
was to use two PCIe power cable rather than just the one cable with the double
connector. I did that, and I even tried to plug the system to the wall rather
than the power strip I was using, to see if that helped.

These workarounds reduced the crashes, but they're still very much present.

The worst part is that it's very RANDOM. Sometimes it crashes in the middle of
a game, and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it resets to desktop, and sometimes
it hangs on a frozen and artifacted screen.

Usually, the system just fails to reset AMDGPU after a crash in Marvel Rivals,
resulting in a blackscreen and a frozen screen with artifacting that rotates
every 10 seconds trying to (unsuccessfully) reset the GPU.

90% of the time, I'm forced to do a hard shutdown of the system, which is not
ideal.

On an unrelated note, this was also an issue in the Monster Hunter Wilds Beta
Test, but it has since been fixed in the full release so far.

I'm at a loss, and I'm starting to think the GPU itself is the culprit.
