[kwin] [Bug 500909] No screencast/window thumbnail functionality works

2025-03-06 Thread bugzilla_noreply
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=500909

Thank you for the advice! Ive been able to fix the issue by resetting my
.config through the files provided by /etc/skel, as after creating a new user
for testing, everything worked fine with this one. Still a mystery what caused
that after all, as the only thing I ever really did to customize was installing
the orchis theme for KDE.
Thank you guys for your time!

Humm looking at the plasma code [0], between the logout and shutdown request
[1], and the call to logind shutdown [2] [3], there is quite a lot of plasma
code going on, and I don't see anything particular that is blocking sleep
(maybe I am missing something obvious)

My script opens as many konsole windows as you had open before, moves to the

Agreed. In most cases users just want to set or unset a shortcut, not
disable/enable custom shortcuts.

kmonad[0] may be a useful tool for your circumstances. It allows you to use
ordinary keys as modifiers when held (e.g., I configured my z,x,c, to also act
as ctrl, meta, and alt respectively, and similarly on the right).
If you are using a mechanical keyboard that supports QMK [1], that also
provides this functionality (and more) at a firmware level.

Hi Zane,

When you say the canvas is freezing, do you mean that you are drawing on the
frame but not seeing the new lines?
Are you able to reproduce this bug consistently, or is it kind of random when
it happens?

As of now, I'm not able to reproduce this issue on my end (git master) even
with "cached frame size limit" set as low as possible.
I'm still able to play, pause, stop and then continue drawing without having
any issues with the canvas.

If there is any more info you can share (more detailed steps to reproduce, a
video recording, a test file, etc.) about what this bug looks like or how to
reproduce it, please let us know and I'll take another look at it.

Hey Amadei, I'm not able to reproduce this issue.

I've checked the "next frame", "previous frame", "next keyframe", "previous
keyframe", "next matching keyframe", and "previous matching keyframe" actions,
and all of them are working as I would expect. The next/previous frame and
keyframe buttons on the timeline are also working like expected.

Can you double-check your keyboard shortcut bindings and see if there isn't
something configured wrong?

Git commit cb0e06d2900add3387e235a62f94cbfb914d0deb by Vlad Zahorodnii, on
behalf of Yifan Zhu.
Committed on 06/03/2025 at 22:09.
Pushed by vladz into branch 'Plasma/6.3'.

window: reimplement restriction in moveResize

In restricted moveResize, try to guarantee at least a 100px contiguous
block of the titlebar is visible. Previously this was implemented by
shifting the geometry by 1px increments, trying to find a suitable
position. This is inefficient and error-prone.

Replace this with an efficient algorithm that finds the closest
candidate position. Consolidate the restriction code and add tests.

A screenshot of the widget displaying "Alpha" by C418, but the word Alpha is
cut off to "Alp..."

SUMMARY
When the Media Player widget is placed in a panel with 2 or more spacers, the
title on the widget is always slightly cut off, no matter how long the text is.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Create a panel
2. Add the Media Player widget to it
3. Add 2 or more spacers with flexible size to the panel
4. Play a video or song

OBSERVED RESULT
Even if there is enough space for the full title, the last few characters are
always cut off behind an ellipsis ("...")

EXPECTED RESULT
If there is enough space for the full video/song/etc title to fit, then it
should display the entire title

because that would be incompatible with the input display that allows the input

This annoying issue is reproduced on my ArchLinux too. It's being fired in both
of the Krusader and the Dolphin. It doesn't lead to theirs crash, but to the
main window disappearing for a moment. It's reproduced for the first Properties
invocation only and for a (single) folder only. It doesn't matter if I choose
it via the context menu or using the shortcut. It isn't reproduced if I select
multiple folders or a single or multiple files, but even after successful
Properties invocation (e.g. for the multiple folders) the first attempt to open
the Properties window for a single folder lead to the behaviour described.
After this the Properties window opening works as expected in this
Krusader/Dolphin instance.

[plasmashell] [Bug 501167] New: plasmashell crash after changing workspaces via the bar

2025-03-06 Thread Micah Shennum
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=501167

Bug ID: 501167
Summary: plasmashell crash after changing workspaces via the
bar
Classification: Plasma
   Product: plasmashell
   Version: 6.3.2
  Platform: Compiled Sources
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Keywords: drkonqi
  Severity: crash
  Priority: NOR
 Component: generic-crash
  Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: jimt...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: 1.0

Application: plasmashell (6.3.2)
 (Compiled from sources)
ApplicationNotResponding [ANR]: false
Qt Version: 6.8.2
Frameworks Version: 6.11.0
Operating System: Linux 6.13.5-gentoo x86_64
Windowing System: Wayland
Distribution: "Gentoo Linux"
DrKonqi: 6.3.2 [CoredumpBackend]

-- Information about the crash:
I unlockd my computer, checked webbrowser, then tried to switch to another
workspace via clicking the area in the bar. The bar "froze" for a second or
two, showing the windows from the old workspace (I did see windows for the new
workspace visible "for real"), then the bar blinked out/reloaded and I got this
plasmashell crash dialog. I tried changing back and forth among desktops a few
times, but it didn't happend again. Incase it matters, I'm using wayland on
nvidia drivers.

The crash does not seem to be reproducible.

[kdeconnect] [Bug 500825] KDE connect crashed multiple times on startup

2025-03-06 Thread Jakob Petsovits
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=500825

Let's link to the commit in Invent:
https://invent.kde.org/network/kdeconnect-kde/-/commit/d04a3336bc2855880ac9a9591f3ec907c6f8dc36

There is a straightforward bug in this commit, in this change:

> - obj.insert(QLatin1String("id"), m_id);
> + obj.insert(QLatin1String("id"), QDateTime::currentMSecsSinceEpoch());

m_id was a QString though, so this line should likely adopt the
QString::number() conversion that the m_id initializer was using before:

> obj.insert(QLatin1String("id"),
> QString::number(QDateTime::currentMSecsSinceEpoch()));

However, fixing the type for the "id" property does not seem to make it work.
Still crashing. I'm not sure what else is going wrong here.

[kwin] [Bug 498280] Compositor latency causes input lag

2025-03-06 Thread Rolf Schröder
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=498280

As a short update here: I currently have an alias `recover-amdgpu` (`sudo cat
/sys/kernel/debug/dri/1/amdgpu_gpu_recover'`) which I only use when necessary.
Because: At work, I connect the machine (Thinkpad T14) to a docking station
(which has an external monitor connected to it) - here, I *never* experience
the issue. When working without the docking station (i.e. "mobile"), I *always*
have the problem. It manifests already during login (i.e. typing the password
lags).

The alias has work always except for a single time. Upon invocation, the screen
turns black, comes back again and KDE reports a little information about
"desktop effects" (not always). The one time it did not work, the screen turned
off/on several times until eventually the command prompt appeared again.
However, the lag did not go away. The only thing I did differently here was to
activate the Night Light. I rebooted and `recover-amdgpu`'ed and it worked
again (Night Light was then already enabled since I had activated in just
before).

It does not look like the same problem to me. The computer is a desktop PC with
two DP monitors. There is no lid. It does not happen if I put the PC to sleep
using the sleep button on the KickOff menu.

I had a look at some of the commits to track down the cause.

It looks like commit d04a3336bc2855880ac9a9591f3ec907c6f8dc36 in kdeconnect-kde
is the culprit. By reverting to the commit immediately before and restarting
kdeconnectd, the problem stops happening.

[plasmashell] [Bug 501169] New: Plasma desktop may crash when plug/unplug external display

2025-03-06 Thread bugzilla_noreply
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=501169

Bug ID: 501169
Summary: Plasma desktop may crash when plug/unplug external
display
Classification: Plasma
   Product: plasmashell
   Version: 6.3.2
  Platform: Arch Linux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: generic-crash
  Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: joey.joey...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: 1.0

SUMMARY
Sometimes, connecting a monitor via HDMI may cause Plasma to crash as it
attempts to move the main display from the laptop screen to the external
display.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
Before reproducing, make sure the external monitor is set as the main display
and the laptop screen set to turn off automatically when monitor is connected
1. Connect external monitor to laptop (HDMI port, idk if this affects DP)
2. Laptop display will turn off, and screen will appear on external monitor

OBSERVED RESULT
Plasma desktop disappears (background turns black, taskbar, desktop icons, and
widgets disappear)
Only kwin remains running
(Same thing happens when going from external monitor back to laptop display)

EXPECTED RESULT
Desktop should switch displays successfully without crashing

Hi,

this is related to:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/4009

As per Mario's recommendation, I'm also opening a report here, although my
layman instincts suggest that something's wrong on the AMD side of things.

My framework laptop 13 with an AMD 7840U chip behaves unpredictably after
waking up from sleep. At times everything works fine, other times it spirals
down into freezes that force me to power off and start from scratch. Those
freezes are usually preceded by blocky artifacts or kwin animations repeating
in loop, like minimizing a window.

System info:

Operating System: openSUSE Tumbleweed 20250304
KDE Plasma Version: 6.3.2
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.11.0

If you don't mind I would keep attachments in the aforementioned ticket on the
freedesktop drm/amd project, to avoid duplicates. If you do mind, please let me

SUMMARY
So few days ago it seems that kwallet reset it (I lost all the db saved but I
can recover it from another computer) and I got a wizard asking me to set the
password for the database.
I closed it instead to continue and for few days I got a lot of crash (that I
sent) but today I was very bored and started thinking what happened and I
remembered.
I tried running kwalletd on console to see what is happening:

```
kwalletd6: ./src/runtime/kwalletd/kwalletd.cpp:603: int
KWalletD::internalOpen(const QString&, const QString&, bool, WId, bool, const
QString&): Assertion `b->cipherType() != KWallet::BACKEND_CIPHER_UNKNOWN'
failed.
KCrash: Application 'kwalletd6' crashing... crashRecursionCounter = 2
```

So I closed the kwalletd process, put a kwallet.kwl file that I backupped years
ago and now the issue gone.

Hi Nate, thank you for your reply.
Indeed, the pain in the ass behaviour would shift to the need for enabling and
disabling custom shortcuts, but the underlying issue that keycodes are
intercepted and not forwarded to the active application is as far as I
understand a fundamental core part of waylands ̶d̶e̶g̶r̶a̶d̶a̶t̶i̶o̶n̶ ̶o̶f̶
̶u̶s̶e̶r̶ ̶e̶x̶p̶e̶r̶i̶e̶n̶c̶e̶
security tenets, so that cannot be changed. It is still preferable (in my
opinion) to be able to enable and disable custom shortcuts instead of having to
keep track of custom shortcuts in a spreadsheet somewhere that is separate from
the KDE settings.
The reason why Meta+F10 does not work for my case is twofold: 1) It's probably
already bound to some default shortcut like "Switch to Workspace 10" and 2) I
have a 65% keyboard that doesn't have a function-key row. Not only do I not
have a Meta button on the right side of my keyboard, I also need to hit the
Layer+ key to turn my Number-Row into the function row, and suddenly a 2-button
shortcut is turned into a 3-button shortcut not unlike the 3-finger salute,
just even more uncomfortable.

You are of course not obligated in any way to support custom keyboard layouts,
this is just the reason why for me personally it doesn't work well.

SUMMARY
While four finger gestures work wonderfully, just like mac, in KDE Plasma on
Wayland, three finger gestures do not open the app overview. They only page
desktops left and right. This is very important for me, because I have a small
trackpad and it is difficult to fit all four of my fingers on it in order to
swipe up. This renders swiping up useless for me. I would love to use the swipe
up feature as easily as I can on mac. And if I can get that working, I would
fully commit to linux. Right now, I still want a mac. This should not be a
difficult fix. Yall already got it working for four fingers! Three fingers is
even less fingers! Please implement this when you get the chance :P

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Wayland. Arch. KDE Plasma.
2. Place four fingers on the trackpad
3. Move them up simyltaneously.
4. WOW
5. Place three fingers on the trackpad

~Open terminal here

but both these open ghostty terminal and the 1st option has konsole logo
instead of ghostty while the open terminal here entry also opens ghostty

Screenshot of exercise with too little money to pay

SUMMARY
In the German version of the exercise "Give Tux his change, including cents"
you can see in the screenshot, that the overall price of the goods is 7,15 €.
But the maximum amount available, you can select, is 7,09 €. So with this bug,
the exercise is unsolveable.

The error has occured at level 4 of this exercise.
Though being a clear error evidenced with a screenshot, it was not
reproducable.
Nevertheless, there must be a flaw, maybe in the calculation algorithm

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
-

OBSERVED RESULT
Only 7,09 € are availlable in the excercises money-pool, while the demanded
overall-amount is 7,15 €

EXPECTED RESULT
That at least the same amount demanded was available in the money-pool, so at
least 7,15 € here

Git commit f9ee024a2ea5cf9ac25ecc3ae05f077c845f82b9 by Kai Uwe Broulik.
Committed on 06/03/2025 at 06:25.

kcm: Show warning when disabling autosuspend or setting it too long

EU Regulation 2023/826 requires connected devices to auto-suspend
after at most 20 minutes. The user may disable this but a warning
has to be presented when they do.

The warning is only shown when changing the setting, not when it
has already been changed before.

you can workaround this issue putting
'[Login]
HandleLidSwitch=ignore'
on /etc/systemd/logind.conf, so i'm guessing, would this be fixed if kde by
taking the handle-lid-switch inhibitor? as said in the logind.conf manpage
"A different application may disable logind's handling of system power and
sleep keys and the lid switch by taking a low-level inhibitor lock
("handle-power-key", "handle-suspend-key", "handle-hibernate-key",
"handle-lid-switch", "handle-reboot-key"). This is most commonly used by
graphical desktop environments to take over suspend and hibernation handling,
and to use their own configuration mechanisms. If a low-level inhibitor lock is
taken, logind will not take any action when that key or switch is triggered and
the Handle*= settings are irrelevant."

Assuming you mean the updates aren't showing up in Synaptic or MX Package

[kwin] [Bug 501149] New: System Settings Keyboard Shortcut Page opening automatically when launching Brave Browser

2025-03-06 Thread Engin Karakurt
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=501149

Bug ID: 501149
Summary: System Settings Keyboard Shortcut Page opening
automatically when launching Brave Browser
Classification: Plasma
   Product: kwin
   Version: 6.3.2
  Platform: Fedora RPMs
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: wayland-generic
  Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: street4...@proton.me
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
I installed Fedora 41 KDE on my PC. After updating the system and rebooting, I
installed Brave Browser using their installation steps for Fedora 41+ (See
attachment screenshot for their steps). I then went into the brave://flags
section and set the "Preferred Ozone platform" to Auto so that I can use
Wayland (Which avoids issues with the Window for me). After doing that
everything works fine, except for one thing. When I start the Brave Browser
Application, it will always open the System Settings Shortcuts Page
automatically, even though nothing prompted it to do so. This only happens when
I set it to use Wayland, not on the Default setting. It did not happen on
Plasma 6.3.1 (currently using 6.3.2). I am not 100% sure if this bug belongs to
kwin, sorry if this is the wrong category.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Install Brave Browser
2. Go into the brave://flags section and set the "Preferred Ozone platform" to
Auto so that Brave uses Wayland instead of X11
3. Restart Brave Browser

OBSERVED RESULT
The Keyboard Shortcut Settings Page opens together with Brave Browser and takes
focus

EXPECTED RESULT
Only Brave Browser should open, no Keyboard Shortcut Settings Page

After uninstalling plasma-workspace-x11 I still cannot reproduce the bug. This
seems to point to the bug having been fixed in version 6.3. I should also
mention that the version details I posted are probably not correct since
updates were apparently applied between the last time I saw the bug and the
time I reported it. My sincere apologies for the inaccuracy.

--Deinterlacer= BWDIF (best)
--"Render full color range" CHECKED
--Aspect Ratio= Horizontal(16:9)
--CustomQuality= 100%
--Encoder= 8 Threads

OBSERVED RESULT
The test.mp4 file looks with much brighter and washed colors.
But if you leave the box unchecked, the result is indistinguishable from the
original test.mkv.

This can be verified by opening the files with SMPlayes or importing the new
test.mp4 clip into kdenlive project (I have attached two images)

EXPECTED RESULT
The colors most faithful to the original video should be obtained by leaving
"Render full color range" CHECKED

2025-03-06 Thread Thomas Bertels
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=501142

Bug ID: 501142
Summary: Desktop icons text is blurry in Wayland with global
scaling set to 125%
Classification: Plasma
   Product: plasmashell
   Version: 6.3.2
  Platform: Manjaro
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
Component: Desktop icons & Folder View widget
  Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: tbert...@gmail.com
CC: h...@kde.org

icons text is blurry. The text elsewhere is sharp.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Start in Wayland mode
2. Set global scaling to 125%
3. Enable folder mode for the desktop

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: 6.12.17-1-MANJARO (64-bit)

[kwin] [Bug 501146] New: Hard to get exact window sizes for some resolutions.

2025-03-06 Thread Evert Vorster
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=501146

Bug ID: 501146
Summary: Hard to get exact window sizes for some resolutions.
Classification: Plasma
   Product: kwin
   Version: 6.2.4
  Platform: Arch Linux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: evors...@protonmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
OK, so I do a bit of screen recording and gaming and video editing on my KDE
Linux workstation.
When video editing, using standard resolutions are preferred, like 1920x1080.
It then makes sense to capture the screen at this resolution. Video cameras
support this resolution and so on.

The issue comes in when using my laptop's panel, which is 2560x1440. I could
just set the resolution there to 1920x1080, but then I am left with display
artifacts which I don't get when applying scaling.

When applying scaling, there is no scale that will give the a virtual
resolution of 1920x1080.
As you are no doubt aware, when scaling the monitor you only have percentages
to work with, and after applying a scaling factor, applications are given a
resolution that is the product of the native resolution and the scaling
percentage.

Unfortunately, 2560x1440 is exactly one third larger than 1920x1080, which
would require a scaling percentage of 133.3 % (Which you can't set) to
get an virtual scale of 1920x1080 on a 2560x1440 panel.

OBSERVED RESULT
No scaling options that result in standard output sizes.

EXPECTED RESULT
Scaling options to exist which scale the display to standard sizes.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 6.3.2
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.11.0
Qt Version: 6.8.2
Kernel Version: 6.13.4-arch1-1.7-g14 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 32 × AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D with Radeon Graphics
Memory: 62.0 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor 1: AMD Radeon 610M
Graphics Processor 2: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU
Manufacturer: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC.
Product Name: ROG Strix G733PYV_G733PYV
System Version: 1.0

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I know this is a stretch, but it would be really nice to be able to specify the
output resolution for the scaling, rather than the percentage. I know people
are used to the percentage thing now, but if scaling could be toggled between
percentage and effective screen resolutions with options that would be totally
awesome.

[plasmashell] [Bug 436318] Implement real session save/restore on Wayland

I'd suggest keeping it separate from the rest. It's confusing to have it lumped
in with the save/restore stuff.

All the apps I've used already remember their sizes on restarting, so I don't
bother with that.

I'll consider using Zenity or similar, but given that it only helps with
restoring and not saving, I wouldn't place a high priority on it. If there were
a reliable way to save state on logging out, that would change. Unfortunately
the Auto-start logout scripts only seem to trigger once all windows have been
destroyed.

I already skip plasmashell, and if anything else has this behaviour it would be
trivial to add.

I don't care about X11. I wrote this specifically for Wayland.

kdotool can return floating-point values for position, but doesn't accept them
when trying to set it. This to me is a bug. However I'm not worried about
fractions of a pixel, so I just truncate these to integers.

Not something I do. I only save the state explicitly.

It appears you are correct about Synaptic. MX Package Installer has a tab
devoted to Flatpaks.

Here is a copy of its Flatpak settings, including the "remote" it uses:
