Thanks, however that is the only driver available on all x86 platforms
and it supposedly selects the correct options for the machine the linker
runs on when not otherwise specified.  Anyway, this was not the culprit.

It turns out that I need to actually use the linker script by setting up
a few more variables correctly in the Makefile.  I still have no idea
why it seems to work on MSys2 (which is the part I extended to also
recognize Cygwin with a few more alterations), but that's something to
find out later.
